    I have the UDP-X700 that freezes on 100Gb discs on the third layer change. After a lot of testing, I proved it was heat related by removing the cover and running a small fan on top. From there, I desoldered the heatsink and replaced the thermal transfer material on the main chip under the heatsink and added some thermal transfer material on the memory chips that are under there too. From there I have installed a small, 5V fan pointing at the heatsink, powered by soldering to the USB socket internally. So far, no more freezing. Still it’s a lot of trouble to go to just to get something working the way it should have from the factory.

      @TurntableGuy  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I've run my unit with the top off so that it would get full, open ventilation and I've added heat sinks to all the chips.

      @@Space-Coyote Great you have that skill, no such luck for me. I did buy a USB fan that I’m going to either suck or blow air from the back. Looked at just buying the Panasonic, but they seem to not be glitch free either. It’s not that big of deal, but I can’t stand anything that doesn’t work properly , maybe that’s why Oppo got out, couldn’t make one that would reliably work.

    • @Space-Coyote
      @Space-Coyote ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@garyharper2943 Yeah, I have heard about similar experiences with all the 4K players out there. If you are comfortable with removing the cover, it might be worth running the fan on top of the heatsink, just to prove the problem one way or another. Bearing in mind that I have the x700, not the x800 and the x700 is very easy to get into. Good luck!

    Same thing on mine. It recently started after an update. The unit runs cool and heat is not an issue. Multiple brand new discs are locking up and always at the same spot which seems to be where the laser needs to switch layers. It’s driving me insane! I also get a strange error where it won’t turn on sometimes and I need to pull power and plug it back in, but I run a custom control system so everyone may not see that.

  • @philk56

    I have the same issue. So far, disabling Bravia mode, BD Live and upscaling has resolved it. I'm on my second run on Top Gun Maverick, where previously it would stop as it enters chapter 13. I can only theorize the processing of falling snowflakes was too much combined with the heat (the underside of the unit was extremely hot). Network is still connected. I used to be able to repeat it consistently when I'd watched the movie in its entirety. It would not fail by skipping directly to Chapter 13 presumably as there was no heat.
    I've left it playing in the basement and set the timer for 1hr 40 to see if it fails or plays through. If this is a success I can try to reproduce it on the other failing UHD disc I own, which previously failed too. So far so good though.

      I should add this is playing thru a Denon AVR-X3700H and thus it also does it own upscaling too, so I dont really care if the Sony does it or not. This unit is exclusively used for UHD 4k and Atmos.

    I bought the 800m2 thinking that Sony would have fixed the freezing issue found on the 700 and original 800; but mine has had consistent issues freezing until the power cord is unplugged. I added an inline rocker switch to the power cord so I didn't have to reach the unreachable plug every time.
    I can add one new piece of information: mine has also frozen with blurays and even a regular old DVD (free of scratches.) It's not just multilayer 4K disks. I've tried turning off all network related features, but i haven't turned off upscaling or the 24p suggestion. I'm really dissappointed in Sony with this five year old problem. Hmmm....

    Same issue in the UBP-X700, sometimes it just freeze and I need to unplug it, and plug again. Yesterday, I was watching Transformers the Last Knight, and It freezes like 1 or 2 seconds in two or three parts of the movie, but I think it could be related to the disk, because it happens always in the same point. However, the complete freezing symptom also happens from time to time. Other issue is when certain disks are playing, the player emits a lot of noise during playback, but it does not happen with all disks.

    Had a problem with freezing on the 4K UHD Blu-ray Top Gun Maverick disc; it would black out occasionally like a video dropout and then resume within 10 seconds. Also, the player's menu system would not show on the TV when selecting the menu button on the player remote. The player was hooked through a Denon AV receiver acting as a hub for multiple devices with a single HDMI out connecting to a Bravia 65" 4K TV. I decided to hook the player directly to the Bravia TV via a different TV HDMI port and voila; everything worked, freezing disappeared completely and the player's menu system appeared when requested via the menu button. I assume the Denon AV receiver loses something in the 4K video interface before reaching the TV.

    I'm a big Sony fan and always wanted to get this player. So with this potential issue should I still get it at this time? I've just been holding out on a new player from them that will do auto DV. I know for a fact that they're not going to have HDR10+ support as it's a Samsung thing and plus none of their TVs even support it.
    Should I just get the Panasonic UB820 instead? I've only heard good things about it. I have 2 OLEDs from both Sony and Samsung so having more of a universal player would be nice even though I wanted that Sony integration. It seems like manufacturers know that physical media will be dying soon so maybe that explains why there hasn't been any new more up to date players out there. Kinda strange for me to buy a tech or product that is around 4 years old for the same MSRP as well. At least it didn't go up like everything right? Both players are on sale right now though. Btw I also have a 4K projector so many I'm better off with the UB820?

    I just recently bought one of these players and decided to get the 4 year geeksquad extended warranty from Best Buy just in case. I only had one freeze happen on john wick 3 4k. I hear that the cause is the 100gb disc sizes can be too much for the optical drives to handle. Some suggest cleaning the disc even if it's new and not having the sony player on standby mode all the time either. I might test out John wick 3 on my ps5 and see if it does the same thing on the scene it froze on. Since physical media isn't as popular anymore maybe the quality control of 4k blu-rays have gone downhill. That is also a probability as well

      Make sure you don't have 4k upscale setting on ever it has to be off for any and all content, cinema conversion mode video not auto, IP content NR and 3d output off. Under system settings quick start mode on, HDMI settings - control for HDMI off, linked to tv off invalid, HDMI audio output auto not HDMI 1 or 2, remote start off in network settings, in BD DVD viewing do not allow for BD internet connection. Make sure if using Sony TV enhanced Dolby vision is enabled in TV settings for external inputs and for audio settings only the first one is auto with rest all off, bd secondary and audio drc always off with downmix mode on surround. Unplug the player from wall for 3-4 minutes as well as TV for a hard reset after adjusting and making the adjustments mentioned. You can post or Pm your player and tv settings so I can go over them. Has no bearing on the metadata on triple layered discs. I have the same disc and majority of my collection is BD 100 discs and I have had the same x700 for 4 years not one issue in that time and I have over 400+ 4k discs and use mine daily.

    Mine used to freeze about 10% of the time, but after the latest firmware update a few months back, it hasn't frozen up once. I really think UHD blurays are pushing the capabilities of optical media to it's limits and that's why they are so finicky, I have a few different players (and gaming consoles that have UHD players) and almost every single one has had issues.

    Just removed my Sony's disc drive, cleaned the lens & lubed the rail, works perfect again....for now.
    It still gets confused with DVD screen size format, always has when first loading.
    So, it was a dirty lens or bad connection I'm thinking.

    Most of the time, it's smudges or a film on the disc (especially 4k). Try cleaning the disc with a soft microfiber wipe. I had freezing issues on the 800M2 and that fixed it. The laser has trouble reading thru the film or smudge. Quality control on 4K discs has been substandard the past year or so. Try cleaning the disc you are having trouble with. It will more than likely fix the issue. It's not s Sony software or hardware issue...it's the disc manufacturers.
