Much appreciated. I watched both your videos about this player. I considered it heavily. In the end, I'm ok with having to fiddle with Dolby Vision. I own a few DVD Audio sets that I really miss listening to. This player claims it can play them. I'm going to get a region free version. Then, I will probably get yet another 4k player in the future & use this one to play region locked DVD's & Blu Rays. But I've been looking for something to play some of my more rare formats on. Thanks for not sugar-coating it. You didn't seem to hate the player but there were some pretty big disappointments. This gives me a better idea of the limitations & I believe I can live with them.

I'm very curious about freezing issues. My X700 regularly gets on my nerves exhibiting them and I'm now even considering upgrading to the Panasonic UB9004...
My current Samsung K8500 decided to stop working completely on Christmas Day (typical when most of your gifts were movies 😂) so I opted to buy this. Delivery is set for the 31st and cannot wait to see how it performs. Great video 👍

Did you test out the DSEE HX? I was wondering if it does anything for DVDs and Blu-rays sound enhancement wise or if it's only for CDs and other music files. Thanks

One question:
Is the display really dark? The video team or music track does not appear ... is there no subtitle on the display?
Hopefully this 800 is better than the version I purchased a few years ago. It was so unstable out of the box, the tile menu would flicker like crazy. However, if I could get a movie to launch it worked. Once they released new firmware, that also switched the look of the home screen (for the better) it's been fine. Super frustrating for the first few months though.
For those that are curious (or possibly would point out), I was and am still using proper certified HDMI cables.
It was strictly a software issue.
Thanks for the video brother! Curious to see your final thoughts on this. I'm sure the Panasonic ub820 is much better, but always curious with the price difference gets you. Definitely upgrading to something this year but at this point might just wait till Black Friday or some other good sale. I got to spread the cost out to my wife doesn't kill me LOL

I have the X700 and never have experienced any freezing and lip syncing. I have had it now for 3 years with no problems. lol.
I'm actually glad that they allow you to switch to Dolby Vision from standard HDR10. I know for me that there are some DV 4k discs that I have that don't look quite as good on my older LG OLED as what they do in standard HDR10. Having that option to not be forced into one viewing experience only is actually nice. Agree that it lessens the aspect of "Convenience" but I like options and choices rather than a machine making my choice for me.

I can bypass DV on my Oppo 203 too by forcing HDR10. I can force DV on HDR10 content too. The problem is I can have the Oppo play the disk in its native format (3D, DV, or HDR10) too without any intervention whatsoever if I choose to as well. The Sony isn't giving you anything that Oppo and Panasonic aren't offering. Sony just did not implement an automatic mode which requires no constant intervention. I don't like having to keep switching settings if those setting changes are not needed. This is a poor implementation.

Panasonic has better picture quality and more features. The only two advantages Sony X800M2 has over the Panasonic are build quality & ability to play SACDs and DVD-Audio.
ColonielLizardT4 I agree, I hate playing around to change settings between HDR and Dolby vision. And I think the HDR optimiser on the UB820 is a great feature

The Panasonic UB820 is phenomenal. The HDR optimizer is great and the fact that you don't have to switch Dolby Vision on and off is a definite plus

LG have useless HDMI 2.1 on 4K tvs for some reason Sony doesn't yet have many HDMI 2.1 features like VFR and EARC.
Thanks for the great review! Manually switching on and off DV when going from DV to HDR10 and back to DV feels like this player was made back in the '90s. I was looking for something DV-compatible to replace my Panasonic DMP-UB900 for my bedroom but this doesn't seem to cut it unfortunately.

@@TechnoDad Yes, I'm not sure how active Sony are with firmware updates, but if they fix this I'm interested because I can get is as region free for regular BD's.
Another region free alternative is the Pioneer UDP-LX500 but it's heavy, built like a tank and quite more expensive. Also as I gathered from your review of it, it didn't seem to be the most user friendly either for that matter.

Hi... am not getting HDR output through my sony 800m2 player. Is that any HDMI cable issue or need to do any extra setup? am using Marantz SR 6013, sony 800m2, and Optoma UHD 51. Can you please help me to figure out the issue?

I bought the 800 when it first came out.decent player, looked cheap in my rack,did not want apps,and the load time was slow, so I returned it and got the oppo 203.think it's a great player for someone on a budget.
Same here. The x800 I bought froze all the time and was super buggy. I returned it and got the 203 as well. Never had a single issue with the Oppo.
@@seanlacroixYou need to update the Software player, and make sure you have the correct settings for 4K viewing. Second, I recommend cleaning your 4K discs, I noticed some disc freezing, then I wiped them down, that seemed to do the trick !
Hi Techno Dad, thanks for the review. I have the x700, which is great. My only complaint is that I cannot stream Dolby Atmos from MKV files. Does the x800M2 resolve this issue? Will Sony ever release an update to fix this issue?
It's not just a Sony thing, not very many 4K Blu-ray players right now support MKVs with Dolby Atmos on it.

Any reason why when I'm playing a Dolby vision/Dolby Atmos disc when I press display showing Dolby Vision and dolby trueHD 7.1 on screen. But my denon avr-x3600h is displaying atmos on front panel. Do I have a setting wrong?

There is the New Option 'BRAVIA Mode' , which Sets Dolby Vision and other pictures settings to the best for Sony tvs - at least this is what the manual tells. This could sound like Auto DV on Sony. Can anyone tell how this Mode is really working?

Hi Oliver. I think the Panasonic is a better player. However, if you have SACDs, those won't play on the Panny. If, however you want the better PQ and HDR experience, then I would go with the UB820.
This is great review it's a decent player very similar to UBP-X800 which I also own. Sony should fix Dolby Vision HDR to auto detect X700 X800M2 and 1100ES.

Hi! No DV on M2TS files on any player. For me DV only works with BDMV folders.
Is it true that i cannot add apps from google play?
Just bought one of these but in the photos it shows a Wifi stick in the USB port I thought. Is that just a USB flash drive for show? It did not come included
didnt get that far I have plugged in a HDMI cable turned it on to see it say SONY on screen. Popped in a disc that is it. The screen stays black and nothing else comes on screen. . Does it have to be connected to the internet as all i need it for is to watch Discs. I dont want it for anything else

A couple reviews on bestbuy states it still does....so its probably a hit or miss thing...one guy said he took it back for the 700 and the same three movies played through without any freezing..i had the x800 took it back the next day because of the freezing..

A question - you can listen to movies from this device on headphones via Bluetooth, right? But what about the volume? Can you adjust it on the player? Do you use the volume on the headphones set? Please help

I haven't yet switched my TV, so will this player output a 1080p signal? Maybe it's kind of crazy to buy a 4k player for a standard HDTV, but I need a new player and I want something a little better than the $60 plastic box I have. There doesn't seem to be anything of quality offered in standard Bluray players anymore. Also, does it do a good job upconverting DVDs?

I am on my second player. It connects to both lan and my two different wifi networks, but when i go to Netflix it says i dont have a connection. I reconnect and can even do updates but when i go to anything internet related it says im not connected and we repeat the process. My router is new and other things connect fine.
That’s very strange. I haven’t had any issues with the streaming apps. I would try to contact Sony tech support.
So will this 4K player play 5.1 movies, in a 7.1 Configuration, or that have something to do with AV Receiver

Hey there, so the UBP-X800M2 does pass through great audio/video through the Onkyo receiver to a 4k projector, but the home page/settings menu etc do not show up. It is the strangest thing. If I take the same cables and connect directly to the LG OLED I can see the home page and access settings, and thats how I ran the software update. Any thoughts on why this would happen? The Nvidia Shield player has no issues connecting via the same receiver/cables to the projector.
Hi! Sorry for the delay. It has to do with something in the Onkyo AVR or projector. Not 100% sure what it could be.
I guess this and the X1100ES are the only legitimate successors to the OPPO UDP-205, but without the incredible ESS DAC and dedicated multi-channel analog outputs.

Sony said it multiple times, they won't release Dolby Vision on there due to hardware incompatibility.
Dolby vision, SACD/DVD-A for $300, this is the unit I’ll be buying after I buy 2 more SVS height speakers.

stanbuck7 They haven’t fixed the Forced DV on HDR10 discs too (if not manually disabled..) I don’t think they’re gonna fix that with a FW update ever.

Hi techno dad. How you was able to used a 10 TB disk. Sony is saying that the UBP-X800M2 Maximum tested USB device capacity is External HDD: 2TB (MBR) / 4TB (GPT) and Supported file system are FAT32, NTFS, exFAT
How you formatted the HD? Did you use a mac or pc. How exactly is your HD Formatted. Thanks
Hello Ray, it was formatted in NTSF and I needed NTFS for Mac software for my Mac to get it to work. As soon as I exceeded 4TB of information on the 10TB disk, it stopped seeing the 10TB disk.
Please compare with the Panasonic 820!!
UB820 has support for HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision. Sony only has support for HDR10 and DV. So that depends on your TV. The Sony plays SACS and DVD Audio, which the UB820 does not. I would still recommend the UB820 over this Sony.

Hi! You can use whatever speakers, they don't have to be Atmos speakers unless you are doing the ceiling bounce thing.

I just purchased a Sony UBP-X800m2. It is connected to HDMI port 1 on my Samsung UN65MU6290. The TV does ARC through HDMI port 3 to my Yamaha RX-V385 receiver HDMI output port.
When playing Dolby Digital Blue Ray (HDMI 1 on TV) pressing the Sony display button on the remote, the TV screen shows it’s reading the DD signal correctly, but the HDMI Out shows the sound to be DD 2.0. Careful analysis shows the receiver is clearly playing DD 5.1 sound, as confirmed by Blue Ray DVE test disc. Individual test sounds do come through each correct speaker! FL, center, FR, SR, SL, Sub.
Anyone knows why the Sony display screen says 2.0? BTW, the Yamaha receiver is set to “Straight” and is not doing any sound processing.
I’m wondering if this player has the same disc freeze issue as the original x800. It’s a shame that it forces Dolby Vision just like the x700.

How does the noise from a spinning 4k disc compare to the UBPX700?
I had a UBPX700 briefly, but the noise from a 4k disc was so loud I returned it. Same with 2 LG players.

in case of LG players beiing loud some resolved it by placing piece of paper (or rubber i would choose) too put under the drive inside so there is no room anymore between drive/bottom i asume to kill vibration(it seams too work reading reactions under that clip).My guess is same trick wil work on more players that has those plastic drives 4k discs spins much faster than blu rays so it starts to vibrating th-cam.com/video/H0F7fY3IPd8/w-d-xo.html

@@superbrighteye Thanks. I found that video when I got my 1st LG player. LG should have done something similar before they ever released the player. I'd hoped the 2nd model (sorry don't recall numbers) that I bought about a year latter would have resolved the problem but it did not.
No spinning noise from the X800M2.
3:19 4k BluRay discs are DV Profile 7, Netflix and streaming apps use Profile 5. (7 is better)
Awesome channel!!! Can’t believe you are unboxing a player not released for sale in the uk yet. Sadly it looks like Sony are missing an opportunity to give the consumer the brilliant player match for their oled tv’s. As someone who’s ready to change to 4 k and didn’t get in soon enough to buy a Oppo 203, I need a decent player / tv combination. Panasonic aren’t for me, Pioneer have still got the same os from my bdp lx-71 in the lx500? We as consumers, lovers of film and music deserve better... with no tech answer on the horizon??
Thank you Kevin!! The used market for Oppo is still pretty large. Also some new ones out there. Price is high, but it's just such a good player. I'm hoping to buy one and give it away for my channel's 100K subscriber thank you. Unfortunately I won't be shipping out of the US. Have you tried looking for the Cambridge Audio CXUHD? It's a clone of the Oppo UDP-203.

Is this x800m2 multivoltage or just for US 110v?
the pre model the previous x800 could indeed be used on both 110 and 220 its probably stil the same on m2 model i asume because it stil also has probably same internal powersupply. in early 2018 i bought a new us ub80 ebay cheap (is same as x800 but for best buy supermarket ) for use here in Europe. its says on the back 110v (no mention 220 on back)but it swallows 220 too (i read that fact before on internet that they used multi powersuply inside the x800 i made an euro plug on the end and no problems 110v us model runs fine on 220volt here in Europe
You would think the power wil works both ways if you would buy euro model and want to use it in the US (not tested that way but seams logical but you never know im not an expert)) But as i told in an earlier post im now fine anyway with other reagion discs just streaming it from my pc blu ray drive to the x800 for me there is no need to make players region free anymore just buy a locked region local player with network streaming like x800 i see no quality difference compaired to playing a disc on the player itself.Only you loose the menus that way because x800 only streams the actual final video files on disc vob and in case of blu ray mts stream.just put serviio and paskeylight on your pc add E or D bluray drive in serviio librarie let paskeylight scan disc for a while and bypass the security wait untill servio has updated the contend from disc in its librarie and on x800 player serviionetwork logo you can pick final video file on disc and play Offcourse with verry new titels passkeylight could be behind but there are regular updates but sofar im happy just streaming other region to x800
Will be sticking with my OPPO-UDP203...I own one of the original Sony x800`s and use it almost every night in the bedroom..I have had no issues with it at all...but my main player is my OPPO and it will be until it dies....

Heyho, I know it's kinda late but I just bought that thing now.
Few days ago I bought the ubpx700 and gave it back because the picture went shitty with contrast, sound was horrible and audio lag.
Today I bought the x800 and hell this thing is great. The picture is like 4x better and the audio too, seems like since your video sony did a lot in the last 2 updates I downloaded... greets

One of the differences between the 700 and 800 is the 800 supports blue tooth for head phones .

I was very disappointed I never got the free Blu Ray discs and after contacting Sony they said the offer was limited time and if that wasen't bad enough there were more surprises in store for me here is my review. Top marks for this effort from Sony sound quality is the best when using SACDs and Amazing picture quality too as long as you use a 4k TV of course, I am only using a cheap TCL 4k Monitor but delighted with the picture quality. I am also using 4k cables as well bought separately. But after using this since July 20 when I purchased it its been a constant going in and out of sound settings to get the sound to work. The main problem here is if you plan to just use it for blu ray, network and CDs that's fine but as soon as you put in a SACD there is no output in Super Audio so its back in to sound settings to re set it to play SACDs then after that it goes dead again no sound when trying to watch a Blu Ray/You Tube/or normal CD and if that's not a nightmare in itself you get TWO HDMI outs one for Audio/Video and one for Audio Out only which I am guessing is for SACD. I have managed to get the SACD output working in the past but I just work out when I changed in settings, why the heck can't Sony just have one HDMI out and set the sound to adjust itself for ALL outputs not have to keep going in and out of settings every time I want to change from normal sound to DSD/Super Audio CD its a complete nightmare and very frustrating and more bother than its worth I am considering selling this unit for a better brand. Very angry with Sony they have gone down the drain the last few years with their products.

You lucky guy I never got mine free DVD or Blu Rays. I have a Sony HT-ZF9 3.1 soundbar and Sony UBP-X800M2 but when you play SACDs there is
no sound even though I have it wired up via both HDMIs the audio and video HDMI out to TV and the AUdio only to the soundbar. According to the manual this idea is fine but no sound on SACDs only normal CDs. It starts to play the SACDs but just no sound.

@@TechnoDad I got in touch with Sony but that didn't help so I tried using a HDMI switch box with optical out to my Sony soundbar and hey we have sound in DSD at last
Sweet, been waiting on this. Odd that Dolby Vision is forced with this and that it has to be turned on, it seems like a gimmick or glitch. You'd think they'd have figured this out by now though. And the original 800 came with 3 discs didn't it? Come on Sony. At least they updated that archaic menu.
I am interested in knowing if it's worth an upgrade over the LG-UBK90 as far as picture and sound quality. The reviews on the original 800 were always so high and sometimes it makes me wonder if I'm missing anything. Granted I'm on the TCL 55R615 but if your source is mediocre your picture will be too right? And you know firsthand that the TCL has an excellent picture.
I'll say this too, getting into home theatre is such a Pandora's Box. Once you open it and go down that rabbit hole it never ends lol. You get a product you love then within days you see something new. Bigger, better, more features, it'll tickle your ass with a feather.
I have the TCL 55R615 as well and the Panasonic UB820 is a phenomenal player, definitely worth the price. It automatically plays in HDR10 or DV depending on the source
@@wesfishcare I love my TCL 55R615 it's an incredible tv especially for the price. And the LG-UBK90 is a great 4K player that also does DV and HDR10 automatically. The only player I've heard of that you have to turn Dolby Vision on and then it forces everything into DV are the Sony x700 and now this new one. It's just odd. Whether it's actually playing in Dolby Vision or if it's just showing the logo despite the content though, well, how can it if it's not encoded with Dolby Vision?? So it's just really weird. Plus having to turn it on, no other player does this.
There is literally nothing good about a Tcl tv. Not even a 120 refresh rate. So last thing you should talk about is a good home theatre set up. It doesn’t even have a true 10 bit panel it’s an 8 bit panel with FRC.
@@Chiguy312 I have zero judder watching blurays and 4k blurays, and I don't game so refresh rate isnt a criterion I'm worried about. And as for the HDR, even though it may not be native 10 bit the picture quality is phenomenal for the price, it's a high value

Also never once did I say I was building my home theatre system around this tv. That's your assumption. It's the tv I have now. It's the start of my journey. It's my Iron Man not my Endgame. For my needs, my room, in my apartment to my eyes and my wallet it's the best tv I could have purchased. I have no motion rate or image quality complaints. Are there better tvs and 4K players out there? Of course there are because nothing is perfect.

@@christophersmalling8889 The x800m2, like its predecessor the x800 is quiet when playing a 4k disc. I don't have a dedicated home theater room. My equipment is just below my Sony OLED 65A8F. Unless you have all your equipment stashed in a off-site equipment closet, you can clearly hear the x700 whirring like mad trying to play a 4K movie disc. It's the one thing about my new 800m2 I like over my x700. (and yes, I owned all three.)
Does Netflix have Dolby Atmos? On the app?
Many reported it that Netflix on there only has 5.1
As of this writing, Netflix only has Dolby Atmos on Xbox One S/X, Apple TV 4K, Windows 10, certain Vizio and TCL TVs, and LG OLED TVs since 2017.
It's on Netflix what devices they allow Dolby atmos. This is not one of them. Check Netflix website for current list.

Yep. Panasonic - DP-UB820 is the choice. I wanted to wait around for this but I said screw it and spend the extra money. The Panasonic is freaking awesome. Better picture quality.
