  • In this video we target crappie on laydown trees and brush piles. I started out looking for crappie on docks on this particular day, but the laydowns were obviously the right deal. Hope you enjoy and thanks for watching!

    To your question....I've always wanted to run braid but I fish alot of clear water. I learned to tie the FG knot quickly via the Salt Strong method. Game changer for me. Now all my dock shooting, casting, and vertical rods are rigged with 10/2 yellow power pro FG'd to a clear leader. I brush the knot with clear lacquer from my fly-tying box since I cast thru guides. Casts seamlessly even with 1/32 jigs. That was my hang-up with double uni's... Always been a line watcher but as you know well- windy days and we lose contact with light jigs. I like viscous panfish but LOVE the distance and sensitivity of the braid without worrying about line shy fish in gin clear water. Appreciate all the crappie videos!!!! Thanks much :)

    You can differently tell the sound of braid when reeling one in I use braid on all my rods tied straight to the jig.

    I used to run a lot of Vicous, but never liked braid for crappie fishing. Found some P line cxx. 6# test in flourescent green and absolutely love it. I will not switch from the Pline for awhile as long as it works as good as it is now. Tight lines !!

    Brandon I have been fishing for over 45 years. These years have been mostly concentrated on smallmouth and crappie. I do use braid for nighttime smallmouth and I have tried braid over the years on crappie and what I have found is I always come back to mono hi-viz for crappie. There is no doubt that braid is more sensitive but due to no stretch I have lost many big crappie over the years because what ends up happening is when you set the hook the no stretch ends up translating at the hook and you end up slicing or should I say tearing a hole. As long as you don't give the fish slack it's not that big of a deal but braid is not for me as far as using it for crappie fishing. I think using braid on crappie is a personal choice but over the years I got away from using it. To each his own.

    • @BrandonLesterFishing
      @BrandonLesterFishing  ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s the same reason I have never liked braid for crappie. I have found that using a light action rod that is more limber than you would normally use will solve the problem. It’s hard to get away from the hi vis mono though, especially when you’ve caught thousands of them on it over the years. Thanks for watching!

    I have a love hate relationship with braid. It is very sensitive, but I do get a lot of wind knots. Anymore I think straight mono is best for panfish. Heck, Bill Dance uses mono for just about everything and still catches a boat load. If it aint broke...don't fix it.

    • @Dangbo3030
      @Dangbo3030 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I have tried several brands of braid and I got tired of the knots so I either use mono or fluorocarbon. I just replace the line yearly.

    • @BrandonLesterFishing
      @BrandonLesterFishing  ปีที่แล้ว

      Mono will definitely get the job done. I just like playing around with different things to see if there is a better way. I use braid exclusively on my spinning rods for bass, but I’m still experimenting with it for crappie. Thanks for watching!

  • @kristoffermann9109

    In clearer water like you are fishing I’ve had some success using 6lb. mono (SOS Line made by Crappie/Trout Magnet) with a 3lb. test fluorocarbon leader. Braid to flourocarbon can help detect the light bite but braid seems to be a little more buoyant and makes for a slower fall with a light jig. That’s good in some applications but I prefer to adjust the fall rate with jig head weight mainly. Braid does show up great on forward facing sonar though. It’s hard to argue with the setup that you are using when you’re sore lippin them all! Another great video!

    Thanks again for another wonderful video. I love that sound coming from your rod when you reeling in those crappies. I remember back a couple of videos when you mentioned how it took you about a year or better to figure out that forward scan or something like that. It looks like you got it figured out…lol. Keep the great videos coming and please be safe out there.

    I use braid when vertical fishing and pitching slip corks. I hate using it when casting because I spend too much time dealing with wind knots.

    I've gotten to where I use 6lb mono on all of my casting and dock shooting rods just due to the castability. I use heavy braid on my doodlesocking (vertical jig) rods for the feel and the odd catfish or green carp that wants to join the party.

    • @BrandonLesterFishing
      @BrandonLesterFishing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Green carp😂😂. I have a good friend that uses 6lb exclusively and he catches the heck out of them. I just like the feel of 4. It’s all in what works for you and what your confident in. Thanks for watching!

    I either use 2lb diameter braid or 4lb mono. When I use braid I do not use a leader because the type of braid that I use is small enough not to use one.

    Another great video. I went out Wednesday 11-30-22 planning on fishing docks as I’m learning to shoot dock and caught my fish of brush vertical fishing. How do you tie the braid to your leader ? Thank you 😊

    • @BrandonLesterFishing
      @BrandonLesterFishing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use an FG knot. It’s the same knot I use for bass fishing and is the best knot I’ve found for joining braid to fluro, but it is pretty hard to tie. The double uni knot works fine too but the FG is definitely stronger and goes through the guides better. Thanks for watching!

    Dude like your videos, I have one question for ya. I know you’re a Lowrance guy like myself, how come you don’t run a ghost trolling motor?

    • @BrandonLesterFishing
      @BrandonLesterFishing  ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question! I find it easier to use active target with the ultrex. With the way the head of the trolling motor moves it’s just easier to stay lined up on your target versus the ghost where the head doesn’t move. The ghost is a great trolling motor it’s just a personal preference thing. Thanks for watching!
