I went to buy some cinnamon toast crunch, and the smallest 12 oz box was almost $7. I walked away. I did later find the huge 32 oz bag a little later for $5, but that's because the store was having a huge sale on it. That was more like it. But I have it as a snack, it's insane to suggest it as a major meal.

Don't you find it funny that we're in a time where more people are struggling massively to stay above water financially but at the same time, more and more people are spending and being sold luxurious lifestyles with the intensification of celebrity culture? We're operating at the end of 2 extremes while the chasm between them deepens and widens at a rapid pace. It's manipulation and it's financially and psychologically damaging.

    • @Itsbabygirlt
      @Itsbabygirlt  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +34

Yup, and I credit that to things like credit cards, the ease of getting loans and buy now, pay later. They allow people to temporarily afford a lifestyle beyond their means even if that means always struggling to stay afloat financially. The only people who are truly comfortable and free are the ultra rich

Oatmeal with raisins and a pat of butter and splash of milk is much more hearty than cornflakes. It’s cheap to make too. Soups made with dried beans, rice, lentils, or split peas and cheap veggies like carrots, cabbage, potato, or onion is also a better option. Shrinkflation seems to be hitting processed food the hardest so I just make most things from scratch, even bread and tortillas. It will be fall before we know it and that’s the time to start making budget soups 😋

A common thought for people when they make oatmeal is “this is so good and I can’t believe I don’t have it more often!” But ya if you want cereal you should eat cereal but it will be more expensive. If you want to try oatmeal here are some tips-add like four shakes of salt into the water and boil the raisins in with the oats if you want raisins. Boil it til it’s done then put in your bowl and mix in a little butter. After that put a few little chunks of butter on top without mixing it in. If you want brown sugar sprinkle a little on (I don’t like mine sugary) then splash some milk on top and don’t mix it in. It looks beautiful and appetizing and tastes comforting and delicious.

I've noticed the people around me struggling are those who are single or have dependents (pets, kids). We are at a point in human history where you need 2 full time incomes per household, and you can't afford pets, kids, a social life or to travel. It's really sad. All work and no play. Everyone keeps telling me how much easier it is to survive "in a pair" and it is, but the thought of getting into a relationship for money makes me wanna puke. My Dad and I own a Restaurant together. We figured that we need to keep the food simple. Real, authentic, simple food. And since I was born in Hawaii, we’ve come up with great ideas: Coconut Pudding, Chocolate Taro Pies. Original Mexican Dishes: Taco Calzones, Quesadillas, Fideo, Tapioca & Tiramisu Dessert Shots. And much much more. We don’t cut corners, we don’t add nothing artificial, and the prices are reasonable so anyone can have a good meal.
Now is the time to make this a reality, if these corporations want to charge unreasonable prices, reduce the amount of our food, and starve us, we need to boycott them, and start building businesses of our own to help others live. It is the perfect time. Let’s get started.

    There is one more thing.
The way that fruits and vegetables are grown, they make them big, bright and shiny, but they contain less vitamins and minerals.
For example I have a garden with raspberries, they are tasty, berries are not so big the yeald is relatively small, but they are really good. I wanted more berries so a month ago I bought some from the market. It felt like a bad joke, those berries from the market didn't have much taste. They looked beautiful, but it's like a scam. And I'm sure those berries didn't have as much nutritional value, as ones from my garden.
I see a solution in promoting gardening. You may think that it doesn't make much of a difference in terms of cost. But I tell you, the quality, the nutritional value of the seemingly same vegetables is going to be drastically different.

I really feel what that lady said in the beginning about there being no housing for the youngsters. I moved out on my own in 2003. I made $9/hour (roughly equivalent to $15.50 in today's money). It was hard but doable. I don't know how anyone who is just getting started is doing it today, especially with all the sky high requirements landlords have just to consider your application.
My rent was $400 and utilities were included in that. I could feed myself for less than $50 a week. Now pretty much everything has quadrupled (or more) in cost, but entry level wages haven't even come close to keeping pace. (yes they do wait until the day before expiration to discount) Pros: is really cheap like I bought a loaf of garlic bread for 25 cents in Cali cheap. Cons: not really if you take a really good look at the thing you're buying afterall, expiration dates are just a suggestion

I live in Poland. Back then Europe with euros was epithome of expensive stuff. Now we have higher prices of food than for example Italy, Greece, Germany etc. Coffee with piece of cake here is around 9-10 euros. I was amazed that coffee in Italy is like 1-3 euros max. Pizza here is around 11 euros if you want to order a nice one in restaurant. In Italy i think the most expensive is 8 euros. I spent almost the same amount of money on food in Greece as in Poland, but portions were so big that i could order one and split with my partner. In Poland sometimes it is hard to be satiated with small portions for the same price. The same yoghurt in Germany costs 1 euro or even less when here it costs almost 2 euros. And keep in mind we don't earn money in euros. 1 zł here is around 4,3 euro. The minimum wage here is 760 euros netto. A lot of people is earning like this. The real medium wage here is like 1000-1110 euros and obviously there are people who earn around 20000 euros but they mostly live in bigger cities so more money goes for rent. I am starting my doctorate and i will be earning 700 euros for 1,5 year and then around 1000 euros for next year. The rent here for flat for 2 people is like 600-700 euros. The rent for one person in tiny flat is around 400-500 euros. I would have never be able to live alone with prices like this. I will barely able to live spkiting rent with my bf bcs the rent will take half of my payment for a month. I can't afford the car. They would never gave us loan for many years even tho somehow the monthly price of a loan is lower than rent we pay. If we won't buy any flat up to our retirement we will most probably live on streets since the average retirement is around 800 euros but most get much less. The only hope would be to rent a small room in the apartment.

Sad part is, I agree with the Kellogg CEO. I ate cereal for dinner as a struggle food growing up, but I'll say this; oats for dinner with fresh fruit are a much better option. Rice and seasoned ground beef is another good option. Hamburger helper isn't bad. Learning to cook with whatever tools you have is what you gotta do.. Your goal when you're struggling is to find good fortified carbs to balance with what sparse proteins and produce you can get on sale. If you have an oven, you can cook good food on a budget. If you don't, it's gonna be a struggle every day.
Cereal has way too much sugar, and for a growing child your really want them to get more nutrition than that. It might keep you fed in the short term, but long term it'll trash your health and diabetes is a LOT more expensive than the benefit of saving a few pennies and hours.

just an aside, that Marie Antonette quote was penned after her death by a biographer or journalist (I forget which) and may not have been said like that by her. She did reference brioche, not cake, and it was likely in the spirit of offering to give the people some of the brioche bread that they ate at court. So more 'out of touch "billionaire benevolence" ' than 'air-head rich girl'. But yes, she did not see how her own class was the cause of the people's problems, and the monarchy barely knew how to treat the symptom let alone the disease of social and wealth disparity... I mean, hence the literal French Revolution 😄

It DOES illustrate the social disparity of the time and can be broadly applied to illustrate the ongoing disconnect between the haves and the have-nots, just not in the way people often think. It was a helpful piece of context that I myself was grateful to learn and hoped to share with someone who could benefit from it. Commercial cereals are sugar, grain, salt, preservatives, dye and artificial flavoring. The only nutrition in this kind of cereal is the grain, and that is questionable due to how it's processed and whether it's genetically modified and sprayed with weed killer and herbicides. On the other hand billions of people eat rice for dinner, which is also a grain. They mix it with vegetables and maybe a smattering of fish or meats. That's a cheap meal. You can do the same thing with pasta/noodles. Bread is made from grains, and if it's organic and whole grain can be a simple dinner with nut butters and fruit. In America, our customs around what constitutes a meal keeps us feeling like we cannot afford to eat. Of course we can. But we must gear it down and simplify what we are eating. Not every meal has to be a five star production with slabs of beef, potatoes and vegetables, heavy on the beef. Try thinking more like Asians or Hispanic countries with their beans and rice dishes that they adore. I often have sandwiches for dinner, with fruit or a salad and and maybe a yogurt.
When I buy beef, a $9 chuck roast will get me through five meals. Sandwiches, pasta and beef, potatoes and beef with onions, chopped beef in my salad, or chopped beef in a soup. And after all that I still have the beef broth for more soup or stew.

That’s what happens when culture promotes over spending (living in the moment), when culture promotes comfort and convenience over long lasting, quality products,
    When culture promotes financial instability.
We can only blame ourselves and the government for it.
Can’t have the government “hands free” if society can’t pressure and police itself, when the government goes hands free in such a society, corporations will just come in and fill in the vacuum.
People need to start boycotting again and abstain brands that sell overpriced goods. It needs to be a united action of as many people as possible.
I don’t live in the US but where I live there are two groups -
One, is very much Americanized and is very much all about “now, live in the moment” and doesn’t care about overspending for convenience and you can see how it’s taking a toll on them
While the second group, a very religious one and a united one at that, is very picky, making and buying clothes that last life times, the corporations understand this difference, so they act accordingly and you can see in plain view how in the americanized areas, foods are packaged in small packages and expensive prices while if you go a few blocks to the religious area, people there know that their biggest vote is their wallet and that is clear by the prices on the shelves and the bigger packages for cheaper prices per compared weight.
The reason why we can also blame the government is because when the people aren’t protecting themselves, it is the government’s responsibility to protect the average Joe from corporations using him as a naive product easily sold.

@@Itsbabygirlt the infamous and controversial Israel. Basically, the Haredi/orthodox Jews prefer to live together as it corresponds with their ideals and traditions (like keeping sabath etc..) so when you go to go to their store you notice everything is packaged bigger AND is cheaper, the reason is, they are extremely old fashioned and resemble our older generations much more, thus, businesses have to compete to get them to buy from them, many times have I spoken to one and asked and they always reply - hey, if x item gets raised in price and there’s no logical reasoning for that, we just stop buying it, or look for a different distributer who sells cheaper. Wish more people did this and we’d see change happen everywhere but for now.. the situation seems a bit bleak.

@@Itsbabygirlt I realize that, but the point is, why it is like that. I worked for many years in a food plant, snacks and cookies. They never started the downsizing until about maybe five or six years ago. I worked on the packaging equipment, setting it up, changing it over to fit different products and maintenance of the equipment. Believe me when I say, it made us insane when we had to make the packages smaller because they wanted to save three cookies per package. We had reconfigure all the settings and all the machine parts to fit the new settings. The air needs to be in those packages. And we had to monitor the amount of air. Too much, they’ll burst or develop holes. To little and they break. Just a little fyi. It’s actually a big deal to do this lol lol.

Although I get the premise of your video, I think a small solution is to simply live within your means. Prioritize needs versus wants. There are so many healthy, affordable meals that aren't cereal. Some people chose to live on their own and not with a roommate or friend/family. Live within your means, folks! I get it. Some people want that life now, and I'm telling you, if you don't budget and make sacrifices now, then you'll never get through it later. These budgeting lifestyle goals are doable. But I have the feeling a majority of folks who "are poor" don't want to do it.

@@Itsbabygirlt Well, it's probably not what most people would want. I'm a minimalist. I don't have a wife or kids, and I never really plan to have any. The best tip I have for food is to buy a freezer chest. That way you can buy a lot of extra for when places have sales, like BOGO at Publix. I always look for coupons in the paper and on line for food and essentials for the house.
As for eating, I only eat 2 meals a day, and sometimes only one. I love to do intermittent fasting. A lot of people have it in their head that they need to eat 3 meals a day, plus snacks, and it's simply not true. They are just addicted to the horrible processed foods. That also saves a lot of money by not eating as much. Since I kicked all the processed junk and started making my own meals from organic stuff, my food addiction went away.

Obviously this sucks and we all can see it happening, but I would love to see more videos, essays, posts, etc, of what we can do to combat it. Like the Kellogg’s and Starbucks boycotts really got traction. Why talk about the problem without discussing potential solutions? I know not everyone can because sometimes alternative solutions cost more money or time that we don’t have, BUT that’s not the case for everyone. Sometimes it doesn’t even have to be more time or money. Sometimes it can be as little as buying a different brand or sourcing something locally. Or like in the case of things outside of food, you can buy things pre-used or pool together with friends for different things. We can send a message with our dollars. Don’t forget that at the end of the day, they need us more than we need them.

I have a lot of sensory issues and physical responses regarding food which can make just eating more difficult for me. Before the pandemic, we used to go to fast food places when we were traveling or had been out all day so we wouldn't need to worry about what to make for lunch/dinner. It use to be fine because fast food places always tasted the same, had the same textures, ect. Exactly what you expect from a franchise in a giant chain, but after lockdowns got lifted, I started noticing the quality fluctuate a lot. It can't even really be on the individual stores because I know full well things like chicken nuggets and fries come to the stores frozen. They just became too expensive for how unpredictable it was, so I've basically stopped eating at all fast food places because nothing feels safe when I'm already tired and likely overwhelmed.

Cereal is like alcohol: fattening, no nutrition, expensive. I wouldn't even class it as food. I've returned to my student way of cooking which is 1 pot vegetable stews with a little meat for flavour. I have an apple and lots of water before my meal so I can feel full.
