  • Hello, welcome or welcome back to my channel. In today’s video, I will be talking about the social, cultural and Internet shift from people embracing body positivity to now making fun of diverse bodies. The big back trend on TikTok is one of the many reasons which made me realize there was such a negative shift. Of course, there are other reasons like the fashion industry, and the rise of Pilates, which I will discuss in this video in detail.

@destroyadora I think she probably meant her parents neglected teaching her about hygiene. They're supposed to teach you the right way to bathe, the right way to wash your hair, how to brush your teeth, and how often to do all those things. But some parents don't teach their kids those things, either out of the belief that they'll just figure it out on their own or simply because they can't be bothered. This can lead to several consequences later down the line, from health issues to social issues.

I miss the early days of the body positivity movement when it was about body scars, burns, amputees, etc. I found it after I had gotten a spinal fusion where I had my whole back cut open. I was scared I was gonna be ugly having a long scar going down my whole back. The body positive movement helped me be proud of my scar and not hide it from the world. And the WHY it matters part needs us to do way more than "just" increase representation, it requires us to enact REAL change of systems.. but that cannot and shouldnt be marketed, by definition.. 😅

Plus, if you like the product, it’s in your best interest for as many people as possible to benefit from it and like it too, as sales numbers typically dictate what continues to be manufactured and sold. I think the new trend is to be fit and healthy, building muscle - leaving out of the equation bodybuilders - and have better eating habits. Once you notice how good it feels to be stronger and not have sugar cravings or sugar spikes, you don't want to revert to bad habits. It is also a preventative mindset as it's not a secret that people are losing their jobs, inflation is still with us, and the health care system is starting to fail - at least in the United States and the UK -, therefore, who can afford medical care? There are different kinds of wealth, and health is one of them. Obviously, my comment is not focused on aesthetics, but rather on the "healthy/fitness" movement.

As nice as that sounds, I believe the fitness movement has been better incorporated among adults - specially those who lived in the 2000 Victorias Angels era. Young people, particularly teenagers but also young adults in their 20s, have been growing progressively fatphobic as years go by. Tik Tok is full of such content. I believe the rise of k-pop in this generation is a huge contributor. Overall, even though young people do join in on the fitness as self-care method, I believe it is wider spread among those who have already suffered from body image issues, and thinking of health instead of looks is a huge part of the healing journey

@@biaquerferiasI think all social and cultural content creators are two sides of the same coin, you have a distorted view of reality as your reality is determined by social media and then you assume that distorted view of reality is reality, overblowing issues, generalising whole demographics, etc.
Barely anyone I know likes K-pop, I will admit though The US is a whole different eco system, I feel like generally Europe is more tame, less polarised, less American 😂 (obviously a generalisation and my own personal view) I just think that in The US you're quite polarised and that can be a pro and a con, radicality can spur radical change but there's just not really that influencer, fame, glam, social media culture here and it honestly seems dystopian to me.
Like you'll see celebs in The US just doing daily activities and they're constantly stalked and harassed by paparazzi and fans, it's crazy.
What I'm trying to say is I don't think these generalising and unsubstantiated statements like "this new generation is more fat-phobic" etc are true or helpful and I think it's uniquely American and spreading like wildfire onto the rest of the world.

@@Betweoxwitegan [Long text ahead] Oh well, the first thing I should say is... I'm actually not american 😭 I'm Brazilian and have never left the country. So my opinion is not entirely based on the global north, but from South America too.
However you ARE correct when saying my views were based on social media. I was indeed talking about social media behavior amongst english-speaking posts, which I affectionately call the international internet because really there's people from all over the world, and I should've made that clear from the start. I didn't state it properly and ended up falling for the "oh this generation is..." trap 💀 which I agree is not very helpful in the discussion, but I also failed to convey I was not necessarily bashing on young people on Tik Tok, but merely making an observation. A lot of the creators who portray fitness as health have already struggled with body image before, and they know that's the healthiest approach; while lots of younger people are still in the process of wishing for an unattainable body and bashing others on the internet who choose other paths for their health. Which is kind of tragic in a way, that so many adults are coming from the future to say where that ends up but lots simply refuse to listen.
Onto the k-pop discussion, the k-pop fans in Brazil are a HUGE percentage of young people!! I'm the complete opposite of you, I have a BUNCH of friends who currently are or were into the genre at some point. It is rooted in teenage culture just like Britney Spears and Spice Girls were in the past. Which is funny in a way, bc Brazil has a much bigger japanese population that korean. I can see a correlation on the internet, the most fatphobic people on social media have idols pfp, ED twitter is full of k-pop stans, when watching content about k-pop you are bound to find a post saying "the body I whish I had" and a picture of an extremely thin idol (I think this video has shown one as an example). WHile I highly doubt 90% of those fatphobic people are brave enough to spread the same hate irl as they do online, we cannot deny that internet presence is as important to genz and alpha as real life. That's why I highlighted the genre, because I have much more contact with it. This phenomenom is interesting in another aspect: the brazilian beauty standard leans quite heavily on thickness! thick tighs and glutes, abs, basically look like a bodybuilder. So these netizens are growing quite far away from their country's beauty standards, and instead relying on korea's.
Overall I agree with you that my original comment sounded very polarising, young vs old, west vs korea etc and that was my fault. My intent was to highlight an internet phenomen I have been observing over the past few years that pertains the content of your original comment, so I took the time to clarify everything, that's why I wrote a lot today. @@biaquerferias You don't have to be "American" to have an "American" view, "American" media dominates the world, especially South America for many reasons, obviously South Americans are Americans but colloquially Americans=USA, another thing they stole from everyone 😂
It definitely depends on location, here I don't see much K-pop idolisation or glamorization, I personally dislike the genre but nationally it's not a big thing either, a few years back is when it was most popular I'd say but the hype died quick and it didn't spread effectively, possibly due to the lack of Asian influence in demography, culture and media but also due to the relatively small population of my country.
I believe Brazil has the largest Japanese diaspora in the world but I could be wrong,
Again I'd disagree that internet presence is as important as physical presence for Gen Z & Gen Alpha, as I am Gen Z and I think social media is a tool for creation used by a minority, it desires to make you think social media production and consumption are normal, a social standard, but look around, at least for me no-one I know actively posts publicly on social media, there's a huge push from Gen Z to restrict social media platforms and restrictions their use. This could be due to the situation of my nation, with an active focus away from social media, as opposed to a country like The US
Brazilian beauty standards are too based, we've gotta nerf them, they're too OP, I'ma have to move to Brazil some day or Argentina 😂 (joking" maybe)
I mean let's be honest here, our evidence for Gen Z's infatuation with social media is derived from social media, that's inherently unduly biased and distortive data, we see the Gen Z's who post actively but we don't see the other thousand who don't, they are voiceless and we are blind.

This is my perspective, as a used to be skinny person through strict diet and exercise, then was fat via medications and getting too tired /burned out to exercise. It is one thing to get people to “accept” bigger sizes exist and are here to stay.
But in advertising, to get people to buy stuff, you typically show audiences an idealistic version of what they can potentially be. Most people are not going to idealize themselves as fat. And what was happening with many companies was, instead of just inclusivity, they were seeking out only every deviation from what was once the standard model / ideal look to get people to want to buy something. Honest to god when I would be on a clothing site/app and see almost every outfit or style having an obese level plus size model as the standard, I would skip choosing any of those clothes to further examine. Bc a product has to make me think buying it will get me closer to or align with my ideal self. And my ideal is not obesity, it is fit, really more than fit, skinny. Whether this is right or wrong is one thing, but for businesses, they primarily care about what is yielding more spending and less spending.
Acceptance kind of faded to the back and it was all about positivity propaganda, the forced idealism of fatness. This is what many people felt was happening, like they were being gaslit into admitting fat was an ideal otherwise you’re a bad person who hates fat people. To me people do not understand the different body shapes, and how your skeletal system affect your body shape, and genetics. Some people are built big. Some pack more muscle than others. Being unhealthy is different from being naturally big, or small. For an example Freeda Foreman is a naturally big girl. Whilst Kristen Stewart is a smaller frame. nikocado avocado and Eugenia Cooney are a good example of unhealthy. We as a society need to understand the difference. Rather than shame and ridicule someone, help them. If they don’t want help, then leave them alone. Life is about choices, if it is their choice. Then leave it. Just kill people with kindness. Being malicious and hateful is not going to solve anything.
I really hate how people of higher status feel the need to project their “ideals” to the public and promote unhealthy life styles. Society needs to break from this. Stop making people’s bodies and looks a fashion statement. None of us choice to be born, specially into the bodies we have no control over. God made us all individuals. We should be treated as such, an individual. Celebrating our uniqueness, stop morphing into one. Have a bless day everyone❤ remember you are beautiful.

I also believe that when people tend to overdue a look or aesthetic whether natural or plastic, it automatically becomes stigmatized and then the shift goes from a "trend" to going back to original or "back to the drawing board" And for that video on the plus size model discussing the website she was on regarding size, people must remember that majority of sedentary obese people are not able to maintain there size and instead gain up to super morbid obesity, which then becomes a cycle of death and the inability to buy and wear the clothes that they really want, which then affects the stores sales and money.

It's wrong to say that's it's okay to be a size that will affect your health. I am saying this because most of the time people use the "Body positivity movement" as a way to promote unhealthy sizes. adults can make their own decisions about their health, stop treating people like they’re stupid and don’t know the health risks of the choices they make. they don’t need to be scolded like children and told that they’re unhealthy, because i guarantee they already know their own health and the health risks of their lifestyle. when i was smoking, people always lectured me about how unhealthy it was and i just laughed at them because i was obviously fully aware of how unhealthy smoking was. i just didn’t care because i enjoyed smoking and it was worth the risk to me. a lot of people drink multiple energy drinks everyday or drink alcohol every weekend knowing full well that it’s not healthy, but telling them how unhealthy it is won’t change their behavior. people are allowed to have the autonomy to make their own choices, and i guarantee that yapping to someone about how “unhealthy” they are is only going to fall on deaf ears and drive them further into the behavior. treating people like they’re stupid will not change anything.

For me, when I think size inclusive- I'm imagining sizes 6-14. The problem is that the plus size models all seem to be size 20+ which tells me nothing of how it's going to look on someone of average size. There are plenty of size 0 models and size 22 models, barely ever do I see my size or even close to my size (10) represented. It's confusing with vanity sizing too, so I typically won't buy anything without trying it on first.
Brands will make clothes that they sell alot of. If the average size for women in the usa is between a 0-12 that is what they are going to make. I could see that they may not have been selling that many in the 16+ size range.

I also googled the average US sizing and “ The average size of an American woman is now between 16 and 18, according to a new study from the International Journal of Fashion Design, Technology and Education.” So it means brands are not really making clothes for the real demographic of those who buy clothes.”

An added bonus factor in the lack/decrease of wider size ranges is fast fashion & the shoddification of everything: every additional size they add costs money, because you have to subtly adjust seam lines from size to size. Plus the profit margins are smaller on larger garments, because they use more material. - we're talking pennies, really, if that, but when these garments are being sold for far less than they should cost to produce, pennies matter (not to mention, when you're selling thousands of these things over & over, pennies add up). Plus, no-one is meaner than a billionaire!
This is not okay, any more than using cheaper, poorer, more fragile materials is ok. Bigger (& smaller) than average (not that the size ranges actually represent a true average range) people deserve high quality, well-fitting clothes. Everyone does.

I think the BBL look is really no longer in trend for the most part. It’s just so sad that now bodies are changing again. I think the thing that should be pushed the most is “health” health and being active with and athletic build should be pushed. This can look different on everyone too. Also, I do see a huge rise in gym content / culture being pushed too which I do think it’s good there will always be a toxic/ bad side to every community I guess. The good news is, as long as people keep calling brands out and posting on social media in spite of the backlash, there’s no way they can hide. Social media is a double-edged sword, it’s easy to spread hate but it’s also easy to spread love. They can’t silence us that easily. And hey, maybe this is just paving the road for someone to earnestly fill the gap in an exclusive industry and make it better for everyone. These brands are just chasing a trend to make money off of us, I’m just glad everyone is realizing that. Now is the time to speak with our pockets, a brand can’t survive without a consumer base.

    About Pilates:
it is mainly for posture and allignment for dancers. It is meant to strengthen and allign your muscles to an ideal allignment to avoid injury.
Early "typical" bodies which arose from pilates looked the way they did because they were engaging in other intensive excercizes MAINLY.
There is a concern with people "trying" pilates: but who go about it with intensity (like that weird sweaty photo you showed). Her posture is horrible. She is going against everything which is important when performing pilates movements: breath, and core posture control.
Meanwhile: the obession with gaining a certain body aesthetic over health is crazy! We know what will lead to almost halving our risk of all cause mortality: this is getting at least 150 minutes within zone 2 or 3 cardio (NOT GETTING INTO ZONE 5). The greatest increase to longeviy was seen at 150 to 300 minutes per week, with two twenty minute sessions of bodyweight/weight related excercises. Stretching and mobility training becomes increasingly important as we age and should be performed ideally 30minutes to an hour a week. Walking is important, but often falls within zone 1 or 2 of cardio. We might be able to represent excercise minutes by coefficients related to the zone of cardio in this way.
All this to say we should be trying to follow what the health research indicates.

Beauty is exclusive, not inclusive, because its value lies in setting high standards that people aspire to achieve. This exclusivity creates a sense of admiration and motivation to improve oneself. The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show became famous by showcasing models who represented these high standards of beauty, making the brand special and desirable. When the show tried to be more inclusive, it lost some of its appeal because the excitement and inspiration came from seeing an idealized form of beauty that people wanted to strive for. This aspiration is what made the show exciting and influential. I would also argue that there is representation of diverse people in the fashion industry: Alek Wek (South Sudan), Liya Kebede (Ethiopia), Adut Akech (South Sudan), Maria Borges (Angola), Anok Yai (Egypt/South Sudan), Liu Wen (China), Fei Fei Sun (China), Sui He (China), Ming Xi (China), Soo Joo Park (South Korea), Gisele Bündchen (Brazil), Adriana Lima (Brazil), Alessandra Ambrosio (Brazil), Isabeli Fontana (Brazil), Lais Ribeiro (Brazil)

Even with knowing the screwy nature of our capitalist society where either way I don’t win, it still hurts. I get the health aspect but can we just stop with how we treat fat people (and by extension anyone who doesn’t fit the cisgender able-bodied aesthetic) so terribly? That’s the big issue here and it disincentives change.
I’ve been working on feeling better about my body. I gained a lot of weight during my college years and the lockdown and even though I’m not dangerously overweight, the comments really get me down. It also gets me into an awful psychological quandary - I want to get down to a weight i feel more comfortable living in and to make those changes from a place of love rather than hate or disgust. If I gain weight, it’s looked upon as a moral failing but it also vets out those who only see me as an object. If I lose weight, I’ll feel better physically but the changed attitude towards me might break me because people who could’ve been kind to me pre-weight loss *decided* not to and it’ll make me question if there’s a catch in every interaction.

One thing about runway models that gets kinda tricky is the level of drama put into the sketch designs I think. They're so used to wanting a thin, sharp figure with negative space* to make it pop.
It should not be an excuse to not involve more diverse bodies (they have enough influence where they should be thinking of it) but think of all the fashion sketches you see. Tall, thin, sharp, all so they can have a thin frame to make the dramatic shapes of their garments pop even more. Even the thigh gap makes for a nice pop of negative space, which they also like to use.
I'm sure there's LOTS of fat phobia and unfair treatment that comes with trying to be a runway model that isn't skinny and white, but I think the models don't change because the sketches don't change.
The director, the artist, that's envisioning these articles needs to stop thinking purely in shape language and contrast, and start thinking more about the human that's going to fit into it.
Cater to the body, not the clothing.
*(for those who aren't familiar: negative space is a concept in visual arts where the silhouette of your piece has parts of the background clearly showing through, allowing for more contrast and depth. think of a hand on someone's hip, and the strong triangle of light you'd see popping through if it was backlit.)
there's treatment like a thin body is peak aesthetic for the "freedom" in silhouettes it allows, but to me, as an artist, it looks more like refusing to think outside the box.

I understand the perspective of plus sized people not being able to shop for clothes like everyone else and that is really unfortunate.
A lot of the issues also stem from the "fast fashion" culture in general, though. It is a culture of constantly consuming and then discarding those articles of clothes when they are "out of style" or "season." I don't think that people really talk about that part of it enough. Trying to "fit in" with the latest fashion trends, to me, is pretty vapid and wasteful. People seem to not be able to think enough for themselves to choose not to follow the "fast fashion" trends and just go with clothes that they actually like, or that accentuate their own body in a way that makes them feel comfortable and attractive.
For the record, I own like 2 pairs of jeans that I have had for literal years that I have never felt the need to discard or replace because they are still in good condition.
If you're worried about your favorite brands getting rid of the sizes of clothes that fit you and you still have clothes that fit you, then don't buy new clothes. If you have to replace clothes because they've become too damaged or worn out, then find brands that do have clothes that fit you. Stop being loyal to brands. They don't really care about you, they just want your money. They never cared about you, you just bought into them because they were doing a thing that you liked at the time or a celebrity that you like was promoting it.
    Think for yourself.

    1. Skinny has always been the default 2. Millennials went all in on body positivity bc they’ve grown up in the 2000s Paris Hilton and dieting era and wanted a change. It’s funny that Gen Z are branded as the “woke” and societal aware generation yet they just copy everything y2k and willingly align to the skinny cult again

All yall do is blame genz, but tbh this is coming back bc gen x is in their nostalgia era. Gen z wants the thing yall had as well, in 2024, being a teen or a child is not even acceptable, look at these Sephora kids etc etc. Yall had boy bands, awards for teens, celebrities made for teen while gen z don’t have shit, we have to be grownups. Also if body positivity is out of trend it’s bc of celebrity culture, that was created during the 90’s/ 2000’s (gen x era) they keep changing their bodies,if u want an exemple look at miley Cyrus. And pls gen z understood that teen privilege is real (something rlly prominent around gen x)

I feel bad that plus sizes are being scaled back but I wonder if the brands just were not making money with the extended ranges. Even tho obesity is more and more common, there might not be enough people buying the larger sizes. And unfortunately larger sizes do cost a little bit more to make due to fabric. If might be a problem of they aren’t making a significant profit to justify the cost to produce a wide size range. And then like you said the body positivity waning, and the health and wellness industry booming, there’s even less of a demand.
And also women’s sizing is such a shit show. I wish there was just a standard sizing across the board.
I like body positivity and love body neutrality but I think the community did loose the plot. It went from people with disabilities and people with larger bodies should be treated with respect and should be included to morbid obesity is healthy, and you can be morbidly obese and be healthy. We went from a logic critique on bmi and how it does not take into account things like lean muscle, to body size and health don’t correlate at all which unfortunately isn’t true. And honestly the community was hypocritical because they understood that being severely underweight isn’t healthy, but could not admit that it’s the same with being severely obese. The body cannot sustain any extreme condition. It needs balance. That’s how nature works it thrives when things are in balance. Which people called all of this out but it started to get real when a few popular body positivity influencers died to complications due to obesity. And then another crop of popular influencers came out with saying how they are losing weight due to health issues. It was the final blow to the community and like always, trends are now swinging to the other extreme with the resurgence of skinny is in and therefore the subsequent rise in ED and body shaming.
What the movement should have been saying is healthy or unhealthy people deserve respect and to be included. That is what the message should be. We shouldn’t shame people just because they are unhealthy, it isn’t our business. We shouldn’t glorify being unhealthy, BUT we shouldn’t hide them away in shame. They exist and deserve to have things available to them. And shaming people who struggle with unhealthy habits and lifestyles never works. It just makes them feel worse about themselves and they feel like that’s the life they deserve. It’s a vicious cycle.

Thanks so much for sharing! 💓 Interesting point of view. I agree that the message of body positivity definitely lost the plot at some point because the main message should be about giving everyone respect and treat them decently regardless of their size or any other defining features and no one should be shamed or be hidden away--you never know what’s going on behind the scenes

I think there will never be standard sizing because there are just so many variations of sizing around the world (eur, us etc) and also women’s bodies (bodies in general) are just so different and are shaped differently. It’s hard to make a standard sizing that applies to everyone, everywhere all at once

18:06 This brings up another point. Why do people believe fat people were never skinny and vice versa? “Big people who never shopped there anyways.” What if I was a loyal fan of their brand, had a couple kids, and wanted to buy their stuff? It’s so bizarre. Like if you show someone a pic of you before your weight change, people are confused.

not even halfway through the video yet but i think the fashion industry plays a huge role in this. over the summer and past couple months, i’ve felt like a lot of the tops look better on women with flatter chests (so mostly skinnier women). this is definitely a result of the trends but it also heavily reinforces the current body trend

can we also not forget that there’s been studies that the slim thick trend is actually more harmful than skinny being the trend. i don’t believe either should be trends but people treat skinny as worse than slim thick when they’re pretty much equally as bad as each other.

Representation, acceptance and equity is so important! Why shut out an entire consumer base? I feel like they make more money off our insecurities so the big industries (beauty, health/wellness, fashion, big pharma, food) all work together.

Its sad. People can go from saying to love yourself no jmagter how you look, to saying big back at the slightest person who isn't thin. God forbid someone is in a wheelchair or is disabled in some sort of way, cause ethey get called weird and sped and helpless. This world is so focused on how others look, that you cant even have any confidence anymore. People should take a look at themselves and hear what they say. They need someone to make them understand what harm they do, especially when they blast it on social media.

A lot of people in these comments are like “Fat people made the body positivity movement all about them” or “Why don’t people make body positivity content about stuff I’m insecure about”.
And I really wish people would realize that the reason is because a bunch of fat/plus size activists got determined to make that sort of content, put in the work, deal with the backlash, and build a movement. I’m saying this as a person who has been underweight their entire life and wishes there was more body positivity about scars, so it’s not like I’m anti-expanding the movement. But if you want to see different types of body positivity, you either have to put in the work to make that content, or support people who are making it (because there ARE people making that content, they just don’t have many followers). I spend a lot of time on less popular platforms (tumblr, which has way less users but more adult users nowadays and Cohost), and there are tons of niche body positivity accounts and posts. They’re out there, go find them and support them and build community instead of blaming plus size people for making content about their experiences.
It’s also because from the numbers perspective, more people have struggled with their weight than people who have visible scars or deformities. Even people who have never once been plus sized have worried that they’re fat (including me, someone who has been underweight all their life), and relating to something makes you more likely to share it and grow the movement. Way more people can relate to the body weight side of body positivity then the side for people with physical disabilities or mobility aids or visible scars or visible intersex characteristics or unusual, prominent birth marks (but again, these communities and accounts and pages DO exist, but because they just represent a smaller part of the population they don’t get as popular).
It’s like if an environmentalist walked up to a pro-choice rally and got mad that they weren’t talking about the environment. I’m not saying we shouldn’t have environmentalism rallies, but at some point you have to stop expecting other people to do the work for you, especially when they’re already advocating for something else.

You shouldn't treat someone badly from being fat. You shouldn't treat anyone badly for that matter.
That being said. Being fat is a choice (A choice I myself made in the past). People are naturally skinny, and if people think being skinny is more attractive, they're comparing the natural vs. the unnatural, when it comes to attractiveness. You cannot complain about the world not revolving around the choice you made of being different for your own pleasure.
You don't see anybody saying they wan't to be fat, because being fat is: 1. bad for your health (as I can attest myself); 2. gross/unpleasant (as I can also attest myself). Not everybody, but most work to not be overweight, so when the fat acceptance movement says they are perfect the way they are and society should see them as desirable, it's like spitting on the faces of those who actually had to work out to get in good shape.

No one should be disrespected for their body’s size. However, everyone should feel encouraged to pursue a healthier lifestyle. If they don’t want to, then that is their life and thats fine.
