      It was do that or die. Literally. It's too bad that men have such a resistance to feeling emotion -as that is where life lives....Thanks for your comment Burnell!

    I have discovered Russell Kennedy's work recently and O M G. He's the real deal when it comes to HEALING ANXIETY. I have read a few books but this is the first time it made totally sense to me something I read about it. Anxiety is stuck in the body, not in the mind. To break the anxiety cycle you should separate thoughts from the body. Thanks Nicole for the interview!! :)

    I have almost the same story. My Dad attempted suicide a few times when I was a child. I would go to school and dissociate all day to forget about what was happening at home. When I got home, I was told that he tried to kill himself that day. There was no real caution or carefulness when it came to giving me the news. I can still feel the anxiety shaking my body as it did almost 20 years alot. I totally get it.

    Thank You Dr Nicole & Dr Russel. I hit what I call MY TRUE ROCK BOTTOM Sept 17th 2020, 18 days after my 61st Birthday. A short time later I had what I call my Spiritual Awakening. I felt some thing in my Heart like I've never felt before. Today is day 233 Alcohol Free. I don't crave the Alcohol anymore, what I do crave everyday is the willingness to change my life and how I live. I left school at a young age of 16 with a grade 9? education. The hardest part of my new journey is understanding words some people use in the literature I read because I don't know what they mean. I also have a hard time doing the journaling and exercise questions because I have a hard time understanding what to write down. Maybe this is something you can talk about. Thank You

      Congratulations on your recovery Terry! Finding the deeper part of ourselves and seeing we are truly not alone is so critical in receivery. If you had early developmental trauma it does tend to narrow your potential for learning as well. Many people who had unresolved trauma in childhood find reading and writing challenging. You are definitely not alone. Keep going, so great to hear you are looking after yourself and the little girl inside of you!

    This is so helpful because almost nobody is completely male or female in their psychological make-up. So seeing both sides can give you a more complete picture of the human psyche. And hopefully make you understand that what makes you unique is the way the combination of these parts are arranged in you. That's why there are no easy answers and shortcuts. But also why you find yourself and others interesting and a mystery.

      Its really true Demetrius. So much of therapy is directed towards the thoughts and thinking of the mind, assuming a simple shift in thinking will right the ship. That has not been my experience as a doctor for 30 years. I have come to see that much of our trauma is held in our bodies, esp from childhood trauma and wounding. As such we need more somatic approaches (in combination with the more cognitive ones) to truly heal. Thanks!

    I enjoy the discussion on this topic as usual. Some fantastic points were made. I do wonder if the idea of alpha and beta Male is an extension of the patriarchal atmosphere we live in valuing what they deem as more valuable traits within masculinity. It is fantastic that more men are having these conversations and coming to spaces where they can process things on a deeper level.

    • @theanxietymd
      @theanxietymd 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Arlene, originally we were going to direct this more towards a male audience and that is why I referred to the more classic male roles. Males are undergoing a huge transition at the moment, and "masculinity" is a moving target to say the least. I really dont think most men know anymore. A friend of mine (male) held a door open for a woman and she bit his head off for "patronizing" her. He would have held the door open for anyone approaching in the same way (male or female) as he was closer to the the handle it swung towards him. I am trying to encourage males to be more open to sharing how they feel by showing you can still be traditionally "masculine" but as the lines get blurred it gets harder for males to show up emotionally....I really appreciate your perspective!

      @@theanxietymd I see what you are saying. I also feel like I have noticed a shift in the collective in embracing feminine energy more so than in the past. It is invaluable that someone who is perceived as an alpha male is speaking on this in such a way. I absolutely do hear from some men that they are confused about scenarios similar to what you described. I am a trans individual, so I've been in a lot of conversations with many people with unique life experience in regard to percieved gender. I have learned so much and I am grateful to you and anyone else putting themselves out there to help guide people in such a confusing and stressful time.

    • @theanxietymd
      @theanxietymd 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Originally we wanted to direct this video to men, and I try to present a figure that can share struggles without appearing weak and that men can ultimately relate to, as so much trauma is held inwardly and expressed outwardly by males in our society. Im am trying to make seeking help and sharing challenges more palatable and accessible for men as so many of us have become detached from the feeling in our bodies... Thank you Arden!

      EMDR seems to be most effective with acute specific traumas that occurred once ie are time limited. For chronic issues like growing up in a dysfunctional household that would commonly drop into chaos, EMDR seems less effective. I agree with you about the alpha male part. Originally this interview was to be geared towards men, so the point to referencing alpha was to show you can be traditionally "masculine" and also be open and sharing about your emotions and your struggles and challenges. Again this interview was originally to be directed towards males and mental health, and that is why the reference was made towards classic male roles. I don't think I have mentioned alpha in any of my other interviews or podcasts, other than a passing reference to how classic alpha males do NOT share feelings and emotions. Consider not discounting the information because of a bias that was intended for more of a male audience. Thank you for your comment...

    I think he was USING Alpha Male instead of a masculine male. He's just trying to help men understand that he's not a soft emotionally girly man

    I found his use of labels such as identifying as an alpha male disconcerting.

    For people who identify as a particular gender you sure do a lot of generalisations. Russel needs to watch SAS Who dares wins ans see how the alpha males really deal with their feelings. And splitting people male and female is way too narrow, some women have brains and use them. I don’t know why you felt ther need to split the genders, we are people …… disappointed
