well the robot being able to move an a x and y axis is actually a really good idea like he said and if he actually wanted to "invent" robots with practical uses or something i feel like he's fully capable of it. but youre right its Michael hes not gonna do that

Mot an electronics "expert", but as a hobbyist 3d printer/cnc guy and professional IT guy I can confirm what he said about the motors is true. A regular brushless DC motor can run real fast, but is unable to tell how much it has rotated due to the fact its a rather "dumb" piece of electronics. it's just some magnets and copper wire. Adding a driver board that can measure how much it turns is how you make servo motors, which are motors that can tell how much they have rotated using additional electronics. It's an old trick for DIY CNC mills if you don't want to shell thousands of dollars for a high quality servo motor ecosystem.
Michael Reeves represents why I went into engineering and he continues to be an inspiration for me and all of my engineering friends. The man is brilliant and like any true engineer has the skills and the determination to bring any and all of his ideas, no matter how dumb or ill-conceived, into the real world. And once he makes his dreams a reality, the chaotic gremlin of a human being does whatever the fuck he wants with them. We could all take a page out of Michael's book.

I'm loving this sub genre of TH-cam, where actual professionals in a field watch TH-camrs and their videos about it. My introduction to it was an economist and small business owner reacting to Brian David Gilbert's video about making $20,000 dollars a month which, spoiler alert, was a horror sketch based off of a modern adaptation of Dorian Grey. 15:26 As an undergrad I worked on this laparoscopic AR system, it was totally running late, the phd student whose thesis it was was stressed out and depressed, and then we had some surgeon come in to test it. The surgeon loved it! He was most impressed with some feature that got thrown in as a gimmick, where you could see the percentage of the liver volume left if you removed a piece using the ultrasound probe as a virtual knife. He said he'd use that immediately. Definitely always test it with the actual user, not just developers.
That sounds really cool. How were you able to get the liver volume to begin with? Was it input to your machine from separate tests done prior to the surgery? How did you measure the removed piece of liver?
@Nell S We had the surface of the liver along with its internal vascular system that were segmented out of a crt or mri scan which would have been done prior to the surgery.
@Nell S the volume was computed based on the 3d model and the ultrasound probe was tracked live in 3d for the AR features already, where the ultrasound image was rendered into the view too. You can imagine the tool and the ultrasound image looking a bit like a giant key. Extend the ultrasound image into an infinite plane, use that to "cut" the virtual liver in two, then compute the volume of one of the pieces and display that to the surgeon.

FDA on cigarettes, which are basically 100% guaranteed to kill you via several different methods due to the thousands of various toxins and carcinogens in cigarette smoke: "Yeah, not a huge deal. Just make sure people are 18, let people know they may get cancer, but allow them to make their own choices on whether or not they think it's worth the risk." FDA on vaping, which exponentially reduces the amount of chemicals people are exposed to, is clinically proven to reduce a smokers reliance on much more dangerous combustible tobacco, and the 3 main chemical components have been used and studied in both the medical industry and food industry for 70+ years: "Oh my god, regulate EVERYTHING. Don't even give people a choice. Ban flavors, make entering the market prohibitively expensive and so complicated that only wealthy corporations can afford it, smear the reputation of innovative and even safer devices with flawed and biased testing methodologies to crucify them in the public eye. 16:20 That is a pretty good line. But also, I'm not a medical pro, but I've heard from EMTs and first-aid trainers that if you have a knife or arrow (or other penetrator) in the body, you leave it in so the hole stays somewhat plugged-up. This helps prevent bleed-out while the patient is waiting for surgery to fix the hole.

From an engineering point of view, a major portion of the cost of a robot like the DaVinci is how much time and effort they've put into making the controls and the machine's articulations match with the hand motions surgeons already know. Which is great for letting existing surgeons work remotely without adding too much additional training to their already busy schedules. At the same time though, a robot which departs from that can also depart from the limitations of the human hand. You can see this in some of the industrial robots now in use, where they have multiple articulations that can bend and move in ways that a hand never could and so can do things which an unassisted human would have severe trouble with. The next level evolution of the technology will be to go from replicating the performance of a surgeon at the table to improving upon it. Ever wish you had an extra hand? You could. There's probably a place for "canned cycles" as well, where the surgeon lines it up and then lets the machine do one, routine thing while continuing on with the bits that require human judgement. This, however would require training and developing one's surgical skills on the machine specifically, which reduces flexibility later. The visual hand tracking has some advantages, but... I'm hardly a surgeon, but I've sutured a wound or two in my life (mostly on animals), and I really, really wouldn't want to attempt it robotically without some amount of tactile feedback. There are technologies on the horizon that can do that via ultrasound, but they're so expensive as to totally defeat the purpose of trying to build a cheaper robot.
Considering in addition to the HMI that the requirement that everything in an operating theater has to be able to be sterilized and medical equipment engineering (like nuclear engineering and aviation engineering) requires the most strict levels of failure mode analysis and design: $2,000,000 seems reasonable and almost cheap given the amount of investment required and market size.
@@cholesterol6703 Although, I'll tell you from my experience with the insulin pump industry that it's fairly likely that a bunch of that probably just goes to an expensive insurance policy to cover the liability of a failure, rather than into actual engineering to prevent failures.
In order to use the unit in a hospital setting the surgeon is required to pass extensive training in order to be approved! There are surgeons who have not able to complete that training and pass the tests!

Well the thing about the way he steers the robot is that light-based sensors obviously can bug/misread and even the smallest misread can move say a scalpel a millimeter or centimeter into a direction it shouldn't go. Also with the controls of the DaVinci robot, if you aren't moving the control interface, the thing isn't going to move and you can be methodical about things. But the motion sensor activates as soon as it gets a read and then doesn't stop reading and controlling the arm until it doesn't have a read anymore. That could be changed, but just due to the clear advantage in reliability and precision the controller of the davinci robot is better for the task.

I think my favorite part is
"You may be wondering, is it FDA approved?
"
probbaly is considering dangerous shit allowed and safe shit not.
FDA on cigarettes, which are basically 100% guaranteed to kill you via several different methods due to the thousands of various toxins and carcinogens in cigarette smoke: "Yeah, not a huge deal. Just make sure people are 18, let people know they may get cancer, but allow them to make their own choices on whether or not they think it's worth the risk."
FDA on vaping, which exponentially reduces the amount of chemicals people are exposed to, is clinically proven to reduce a smokers reliance on much more dangerous combustible tobacco, and the 3 main chemical components have been used and studied in both the medical industry and food industry for 70+ years: "Oh my god, regulate EVERYTHING. Don't even give people a choice. Ban flavors, make entering the market prohibitively expensive and so complicated that only wealthy corporations can afford it, smear the reputation of innovative and even safer devices with flawed and biased testing methodologies to crucify them in the public eye. Do everything you can to get this stuff off the streets, it is the downfall of humanity and all that is good!"
Yeah, FDA is literal clown-shoes and their constant multifaceted attack on the vaping industry is a perfect example that their credibility and motives are extremely questionable.

I always love seeing reactions to videos I already enjoy by people who actually know what they're talking about and explain how everything works.

Despite the fact that Michael's design is basically one giant shitpost, you actually gave me quite a bit of insight on this video since I watched it when it came out. Made me realize that, somehow, Michale was actually onto something xD
But no seriously, with what little patience he has, it's amazing to see what he managed to create in such a short timespan. I can't help but wonder if his idea, with some more thought and work put into it, could actually be better than what Intuitive made? Idk, just a random insight I had. Great video and great reaction tho!
Given the content of the rest of Michael Reeve's channel (perfect serial killer name) I'm fairly sure we are all witnessing the first draft of him birthing the terminator robots that will kill us all.
What makes you think he doesn't have patience? Have you ever created something like this? It takes patience, and creativity to translate this to the real world! Let alone make it interesting and fun to digest in lay men terms!
Wtf u talking about

the craziest thing is that with some R&D and improvements on this it could turn out to be an actually pretty good surgical robot. this is like, the skeleton of a good surgical robot, now it just needs to be less jerky and not kill people
So funny how you missed the part when he said "Carriage Utility Mechanism" at 7:10 hahahaha you didnt get it 😆
… or maybe I try to keep this channel family-friendly ;)

My cousins the head surgeon on a haematology ward in a capital city and I absolutely love seeing him every time to hear about new medical science stuff. I even recognise the terms docking he also used to explain how they do things. He says training on a robot is aids. Because a lot of what they’ve learned almost vanishes. I love his so much.
