  • Housebreaking a puppy takes patience and consistency, and the process is likely to take weeks, not days. All current or future puppy owners are aware of the need for housebreaking, but sometimes things just don't go according to plan. Learning how to potty train a puppy on pads can save a lot of the hassle and reduce the number of messes you'll have to clean up. Read the full guide here: topdogtips.com/how-to-potty-t...
Once you've purchased pee pads, you'll need to learn how to potty train a puppy on pads. It's shouldn't be too difficult, unless you have a terribly stubborn pup. No matter how stubborn the dog, you will be able to house train him with pads. Just be patient and consistent.
"DO NOT allow your puppy to play on or chew the pads. The multi-layered pads can be fun for rambunctious dogs to shred. You want your puppy to associate the pee pads with doing his business. He needs to take bathroom time seriously, and it should not be associated with play time."

Hey i had the same issue as some where they run away from the pad or area and pee somewhere else. I would suggest putting it on a leash when you suspect they’re going to pee or poo. Take them to the place you want them to poo and once they’re stable to stand on it without running encourage them to stay there with treats. They cant hold it for long so just sit with them until they do. (Takes patience, mine took abour 45 mins the first time). Immediately reward them and take them off the leash once they’re done. Keep doing this. Should work.

So how do you train them to go outside if your using a pee pad? I'm too old for this. LOL. I tried putting him on a leash and he flipped out and was making noise and flipping around like I was really hurting him. I let him sniff the leash and stuff first. And he did walk across the room with it on.
Then I put the leash on him this morning and he started to pull and I let it down a little so he couldn't and I had to tell him he was a good boy and let the slack out of the leash but he finally went out for the first time and I walked him next door and back and kept telling him he was a good boy. I meant to give him a treat but my other pittie came barrelling in cuz he is jealous.

This is the way I recently potty trained my Chihuahua. I litter trained it, as opposed to letting it go outside, and it was by far the easiest and the best method I have ever used.
So what I did was purchase a 24 X 18 wire doggy crate and put a doggy bed, a doggy blanket, and some doggy toys inside it.
At the same time, I also purchased a 24 X 18 solid plastic container with high sides that I customized into my new doggy litter box by using a hack saw to cut out an opening on one side of the container large enough so a Chihuahua can enter and exit it easily. Then I added an inch layer of pine pellets to the floor as the litter material.
Next, with the Chihuahua puppy inside the doggy crate I butted the doggy crate opening to the doggy litter box opening. As the idea was that the Chihuahua puppy would sleep and play in the doggy crate but when it needed to eliminate, it would eliminate in the doggy litter box. Guess what, it worked like a charm.
So for the first three weeks, I kept this up only letting the Chihuahua puppy out to bond and play after I saw that it had very recently eliminated.
Then after three weeks, I slid the doggy litter box out about a foot and a half away from the doggy crate. Then I monitored my new puppy closely throughout the day to see if she was using the doggy litter box like she was supposed to, and she did flawlessly.
Then subsequently, I slid the doggy litter box on each successive day a little closer and closer to the final designated location for the doggy litter box I had previously picked out. When the litter box was in its final designated location, I then considered my new puppy fully potty trained.
In any event, this was not only by far the easiest time I ever had potty training a Chihuahua puppy, but it was the first time I ever trained a Chihuahua puppy without having any puppy mistakes.
Moreover, a litter box, as far as I'm concerned, is not only the easiest way to train your pet because your pet essentially trains itself, but overall it's the best solution as well. As I don't have to worry about maintaining a set schedule to let my puppy out. I don't have to worry about whether it is snowing or raining outside or if it is freezing or too hot. I also don't have to worry about leaving the puppy alone for an extended time period. I also don't have to worry about fleas, ticks, mosquitos, or my dog getting a disease another dog left behind. I also don't have to worry about other dogs attacking tiny Chihuahua since she always remains inside the home.
As far as the litter material goes, I highly recommend pine pellets because it virtually eliminates all odors and it is quite easy to work with. It's also far cheaper than other kinds of litter materials and does a far better job at eliminating odors. As you can buy a 40 pound bag of the stuff at Tractor Supply Company for $6.79 plus tax and you will use only about two to maybe three bags a year. Meanwhile, when a dog or cat urinates on the pellets, the pellets disintegrate into odorless saw dust.
To make cleaning my doggy litter box easy, I purchased a sifting cat litter box as a cleaning aid only. So what I do to clean the litter box since I always flush down the toilet any solids as soon as I see them, is empty the doggy litter box in the sifter of the cat litter box. Then I sift the sawdust in the sifter into the cat litter box below. When all that remains in the sifter is pine pellets, I then empty the sifter back into my doggy litter box and then add about a scoop to a scoop and a half of pine pellets to make up for what was used. Then I empty the sawdust in the cat litter box from below the sifter into the trash since it is odorless. Lastly, I wipe everything down and put everything up until the next time. As I clean my doggy litter box out about once a week.
By the way, pee pads are not only very expensive, they are also very disgusting.

Hello, Do you have any pictures to how you set it up

    • @bullfrog5037
      @bullfrog5037 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@latriciamccall2711 No, I never took any pictures, but it is pretty cut and dried.
I first purchased 24 X 17.5 small metal dog crate made by Vibrant Life with one opening. for a Chihuahua or another small dog . Then at the same time, I also purchased a 24 X 17.5 large plastic container with very high sides. The one I bought was transparent.
Next I used a hack saw blade to cut out an opening large enough for a Chihuahua to enter and egress the plastic container easily. Then I added a one inch layer of pine pellets on the floor as the litter material. As the reason for using pine pellets is because it eliminates virtually all odors and you can buy a 40 lb bag of the stuff at Tractor Supply. It cost me $7.50 a bag with tax and I guestimate I will use two to three bags a year.
Then I added a doggy bed and a doggy blanket to the inside of the doggy crate for my dog to sleep on. At the same time, I put the dog inside the doggy crate through the single door opening and then I butted the new doggy litter box I created to the the door opening so the dog could not get out.
That way the dog would eat, sleep, and play in the doggy crate and then eliminate in the litter box. Also, after I saw the dog recently eliminate, I would let it out for bonding and play time and then return it back to the dog crate after a while.
Then after three weeks of this routine with my dog, it could be shorter or it could be longer, depending on the dog, I stopped butting the litter box to the doggy cage and instead pulled it out about a foot away from the doggy crate opening and gave the dog it's freedom.
Then I closely monitored the dog through out the day to make sure it was only eliminating in the doggy litter box. Then about a week later I started slowly pulling the litter box further and further away from the doggy crate until the doggy litter box was in its final location inside a cubby hole in my bathroom.
Once I got the litter box in its final resting place, then I considered my dog fully litter trained.
I mean, for me, it was simple. As the dog literally trained itself. I also recommend scooping and discording any solid material inside the doggy litter box as soon as you see them.
Now I have a friend that also recently trained a poodle using this same method, but his poodle was older than when I trained my Chihuahua. As it could easily jump out of the litter box.
So what he did to compensate for that was put the box the doggy crate came in on top of the litter box so his poodle couldn't jump out the litter box. Then after that, the same method worked perfectly for his poodle as well.

My dog just shreds the pee pads!! I have bought pee pad holders and she sometimes uses it but as soon as I step away she poops and pees anywhere else! I took a week off from work when I got her and had her in a puppy pin but it is impossible to watch her every second. So I have now started crate training her with a divider to give her limited space and only let her out for outside walks and scheduled playtime...or when I'm working in the kitchen cleaning or cooking so I can watch her closely. I have been doing this, he's 4 months old and we stay on my bed 24 7 cuz he's so small and I have health issues keeping me in bed. I can't seem to progress with him, he keeps peeing on my covers instead of the pad. What do I do?

My puppy is a little young. I don't really know what's up with him, but he hasn't gone to the bathroom yet anywhere. He just wants to sleep. I can't tell if something's wrong, or if he's just not needing it yet.

Hi, I am trying to train my doggy to go on a pad (for medical reason, I cannot take him out anymore). My doggy is SOOO well trained to go outside that he ends up not going for very long time. It's been only three days and so far he had only gone twice, once on pad and once else where. Is there a way to let my doggy know that it's OK to go inside?

I had a golden retriever before I had Wookie. We used Christmas bells to help her associate with going pee pee. We hung them on the doorknob. Then when we thought she might be ready to go, especially after a meal, we rang the bells and said the magic words. WANNA GO PEE PEE DOODIE? It didn't take her long bc.she.loved ringing those bells. I saw Wookie doing it once but my ex took the bells away from him. He was still grieving about the loss of our golden. She was a special little girl.

Good tips. I did not get much instructions about how to actually know when to spend time in front of the pad with the dog and for how long. Obviously nobody’s can afford sitting in front of the pad all day long for so many days. But good general tips.

I have a 5 month old chihuahua puppy that I got in August. She will not use the pads. I’ve tried different kinds and even the ones that supposedly smell like grass ( which they don’t)
She will go outside but not always everything
She will pee and poop on my carpet. I’ve put her in my bathroom with pads on the floor for awhile but she’s not used them yet. I’ve never had this problem before. I will not use that fake grass rug! Should I continue with the bathroom and pads?
When it’s raining or when it will finally snow, neither of us will outside!
What should I do? I need her to use the pads so that one day when I am not home I won’t have to put her in her crate.
I bc e even rubbed some of her pee on the pad from the carpet and her poop
    Doesn’t matter to her!
    Please help us 😢
    Thanks

I've got 2 chocolate lab puppies.
We live on the 4th floor in an apartment which makes it difficult to take them out quick enough every time.
So we wanted to use the pads for night time hoping they will go on the pad if we are asleep or for rainy days exc..except...
We try to train them to use them by putting them on the pad after an accident and giving the praise after going on it and telling them bad girl when they go elsewhere inside.
    But it is not working!
They REFUSE to go on the pads!
I mean there are times one of us will stand there with them at the pad not letting them off of it till they go ...half an hour later of that with them still not going on it when we know they have to go we turn our back to put shoes on and take them down and in that small amount of time they wonder off the pad and go on the floor often within 5 feet of the damn pad....

    • @helenhoward2715

I had this problem and still do from time to time what I did was got a treat out as soon as she started doing it and put it right in her face and lure her away from it and say “leave it” and give her the treat straight away and keep repeating and say then say it’s name when he/she starts chewing it then say leave it, if they don’t respond then pick them up and put them away in a play pen and close the room door and leave the dog in there for a couple mins and take it out I know it sounds harsh but they get the idea that way good luck! (Btw I had my puppy since she was 9 weeks and she’s now 17 weeks and I JUST a started toilet training her because she used to run off with the pads and rip them up but after doing all these techniques as soon as I say her name she stops and sits)
