Beautiful song! John Denver was a gifted singer songwriter & actor. He had so many great hits in the 70's-80's. Some of his signature songs were "Take Me Home, Country Roads", "Grandma's Feather Bed", "Fly Away", "Leaving On A Jet Plane", "Poems, Prayers & Promises", "Annie's Song", "Calypso", "Sunshine On My Shoulders" etc. John appeared in several films & television specials during the 70's-80's, including the 1977 hit "Oh, God!", in which he starred alongside George Burns.

John Denver was always an environmentalist. Back in the day, there was a show on every week about a marine biologist/researcher named Jacques Cousteau that opened our eyes to the wonders of the seas. I think it was called "The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau". Cousteau's research vessel was called "Calypso" and John Denver wrote a song about it, not surprisingly called, "Calypso". It would be a great reaction song. It's kind of a seafaring ditty if you will.

I would only correct that I believe The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau actually not a weekly show but rather specials that came on every few months as I recall. I think that is another reason why we looked forward to them so much it was a special. That and the National Geographic specials were must watch tv in our house.

John was a natural born singer/songwriter/poet. Amazing lyrics! He always wrote about real things and real emotions. This song is about his experience when he moved to Colorado and how it affected him. He was also a dedicated conservationist and ecologist. He sailed with Jacques Cousteau on the Calypso and wrote some songs about it. RIP John-taken from us much too soon. PS-Fire raining from the sky is a meteor shower.

This was not about drugs. Its a story of a young man who is swept up in the awesomeness of nature n the wonder of how God and nature fits in this too fast paced world. John was so refreshingly different. Most all his songs were peace inducing. My fave is GOODBYE AGAIN. Its like he is trying to figure out how his music side conflicts with his home life. Poems, prayers n promises, This old guitar, country roads, The EAGLE N the HAWK IS AMAZING!! SO MANY GREAT HITS AND A HANDFUL OF DUETS WITH MAMA CASS ELLIOT N OLIVIA NEWTON JOHN. @@stevensnyder1133 The song is inspired by that, but not directly about that. That line could be about any form of building in the mountains. Rocky Mountain High is about one man's journey into spiritual discovery. It's not about a group of people trying to move the Olympics.
I'm curious if you know specifics on the line "He lost a friend, but kept a memory." Is that about a friend of his dying while mountain climbing. Did he cause that man's death when "he went crazy once and tried to touch the sun."
I found this on Reddit. " I've always heard that line was a reference to a friend of his that was visiting from Minnesota and was killed in an accident while riding Johns motorcycle.

He had a strong influence on me both personally and musically. He was so unique and his songs will forever live on. Speaking of "Transition to country" next you should react to John Denver - "Back Home Again" one of my favorites by him. And yes John was great at painting a picture of a peaceful nature atmosphere in his songs! "Rocky Mountain High" takes me back to when I spent time working up in the Rockies in the late 70s and early 80s. It was still very sparsely populated, fresh, safe and natural back then! You really felt free when you went up into that part of the country. And Boulder Colorado, a small college town was a cool, laid back, non violent, dreamy place to hang out. Right near the foot hills of the Rockies west of Denver. Good times indeed! Sadly, to me anyway I feel the image and atmosphere that this song describes is slipping away. That line he sings "They try to tear the mountains down to bring in a couple of more (skyscrapers and buildings), more people, more scars upon the land". The "More people" part especially rings true to me about where this nation headed. And it bothers me. We got more than enough people I feel. We'll never have that free, sparsely populated, wide open space again once it's all gobbled up by an expanding population and cities. And that's what's definitely been happening all over this country over the decades. Even national parks like Yellowstone have changed. I spent a lot of time going there back in the late 70s and it was always peaceful, not a lot of people, you had room to just wonder around and be away from all the people in certain areas. But now it's hoards of people in cars, stupid crazy tourists stopping on the roads and doing crazy things, messing with the wildlife and acting fools. I never used to see that kind of nonsense back in the day. I'm just glad I was around to witness the Rockies and areas of Colorado and Wyoming etc during the time this song was recorded. Before the area started becoming more populated, weird and crazy. In another 30-40 years and things will be even less like this song illustrates.

I love John Denver. An American friend took me on a road trip into Colorado last year, and as we crossed the state border we put this track on and sang along. So good! 🙂

Rocky Mountain high is very much inspired by events in John's life, with lots of references to specific events. The opening refers to John's first time being in Colorado when he was just 27 years old. Prior to that he lived very much a nomadic life, for years touring across the United States as a musician and before that as an airforce brat. He was the son of a renowned USAF pilot, moving from base to base all across the southern states, and once to Japan. In those early years John found it difficult to make friends as he was often moved from school to school and never staying in one place long enough to make good friends. He was thus a shy and lonely boy. Born in Roswell, New Mexico, with parents from Oklohoma, John never did feel that any place was home. All that changed when he saw the Rockies for the first time aged 27. He determined that he was going to return there one day, and as his career blossomed he did exactly that, and lived for many years in the town of Aspen, Colorado.
There have indeed been claims that Rocky Mountain High was drugs inspired, but John always denied that. For him just being in the mountains, in nature and among the wildlife instilled in him the feeling of joy, excitement and awe that he called Rocky Mountain High. In one line the song refers to John seeing it raining fire in the sky. This refers to one night that John, his wife Annie, and a number of friends, were camping high up in the mountains during the time of the Perseid Meteor Shower. It was the meteors falling that John references in Rocky Mountain High. While some drugs may well have been enjoyed on such a night, that was not the high that John was writing about.
The cover of the Rocky Mountain High album shows John standing on a rock in Roaring Fork River, near Aspen, Colorado, where John was living. That rock today is something of a landmark, being known as the Rocky Mountain High Rock, and it is a popular attraction for visiting fans who want to be photographed there where John stood so many years ago.

Reminds me of driving to Colorado every winter to go skiing. As soon as we crossed the Colorado state line, my dad would put this song on. It's a classic for a reason.❤❤❤

I had a chance to hear him live at an outdoor park. He did a free concert for donations. He gave his time and devotion to supporting wildlife and parks and natural wildepark. And raising awareness of preserving nature. He made beautiful music. If you can find it look for old footage of him and his film crew up in the mountains and him with his guitar running down a hill side with a bear running after him. The song is "How to you say hello to a Grizzly bear". Also, he did Christmas Specials with the muppets for television. Great stuff. He was an avid outdoorsman and friend of wildlife. His music is very family oriented and warm and inviting. I miss his presence. I was also fortunate to see another good soul Robin Williams perform in our city maybe 18 months before he died. It was a special time for myself and my husband. Great memories. ❤

John Denver was one of the few artists that I was able to see live. He was such a humble simple man even on stage! The fans were so respectful; you could hear a pin drop until the last note of every song! Then after the applause it would get silent again as he got ready for the next song. Loved your reactions! 😊❤

He was here in Green Bay, Wi. about a year before he died and my mom took me to see him. In his early 50's then and man he could still hit those high notes with such ease. What a loss. Hit a lot of people hard when the news hit.

I loved John Denver such a unique voice and Unique man..He was a lover of nature and the earth animals. I remember grieving so bad when he died..It was in the late 90s...he being the adventurer....he was. He was flying some type of small one experimental plane. He crashed in the Pacific Ocean in Cali. What a great loss. I hope you do more of his songs,,

His live performance of this song on that show will BLOW YOU AWAY, THE POWER Iin this voice, live in a Tv studio. It was his national TV big time debut and John Denver made the best of it. Go watch it. now. LOL

Henry John Deutschendorf, aka John Denver was raised as the oldest son of an Air Force
pilot trainer so they traveled and lived in a few states.
When he said he saw fire raining in the sky, he was speaking of being out in the mountains with friends watching The Percid Meteor showers.
The friend he lost had come to visit John at his home in Aspen, Colorado. He borrowed Johns motor cycle and had a wreck and passed.
John was my favorite singer, songwriter for decades. He did not have the most trained voice like Dimash and Avi Kaplan, but he was great to listen to. He wrote a couple of beautiful love songs. Annie's Song and For You and many nature related songs.
To date, he has sold almost 36 million albums so I would say he was successful and was the first singer to draw a crowd of over 10 thousand.
John was a piolet and had just bought a Long EZ and was headed to his good buddy
Clint Eastwood to show it to Clint when it failed and crashed into the pacific.
He was a great loss in the music industry though his popularity was waning to an new age of music.

John was also a great philanthropist often traveling to places like Russia, (the old USSR) and Africa and known to raise money for the suffering in struggling countries. He also held a Ski event for the rich and famous to raise money for needs he saw. This was held in Heavenly Ski Resort in California.

John Denver always brought a spiritual vibe to his music, similar to Cat Stevens.
