A man named Jacques Cousteau had a boat called the Calypso. He had a television show also. He was famous for diving, filming and oceanographic research. John Denver was invited to spend time on the Calypso and he wrote this song about the experience. I remember watching that episode of the show. I am a die hard John Denver fan for 50 years now. And I loved watching Jacques Cousteau on the Calypso discovering the mysteries of the ocean
He was one of the inventors of the SCUBA system for diving, freeing divers from an air hose from the surface. He was also a noted marine biologist, ocean conservationist, teacher, and oceanographer. This song is in tribute to Cousteau and his ship, the Calypso.
I loved watching those shows, I was lucky enough to have seen John Denver live here in England twice, wonderful experience, love his music. Loved Home Frees version of Take Me Home Country Roads, a great tribute to John ❤

I remember that show also. I remember John singing an acoustic version of this on his last day aboard the Calypso. Also, there was at the time a Jacques Cousteau interactive museum on the Queen Mary in Long Beach CA, that was a field trip for 5th or 6th graders.
Calypso wasn't just a ship, it was an oceanic research vessel.
Jacques Cousteau was/is The Grandfather of underwater photography.
And the inventor of the "Aqualung", otherwise known as SCUBA Gear.
And research, flora and fauna!!
I grew up at time when we had weekly she’s by Cousteau, and Marlon Perkins of the St. Louis’s ZOO, mutual of Omaha wild kingdom.

Really wish you had reacted to the official video. It would have given you much more context. The Calypso was the boat of Jacques Cousteau and he had a TV show that most of us watched in our youth. Helped teach us about conservation. John Denver went on this boat with Cousteau many times!!
It's difficult for younger generations to understand in this age of instant information. Back in the 60's/70's very few people would have even seen the ocean in person unless you lived near the coasts. We also knew very little of the sea all while we were traveling to the moon. We had 3 channels on TV. But, there was a man (Jacques Cousteau) and his ship Calypso that had these National Geographic specials a few times a year that would explore the undersea world from every corner of the world. We loved it and the crew of the Calypso!

Everybody watched his specials, and *everybody* knew who Jacque Cousteau was. It's weird that people don't know who he was, anymore, given how big he and his specials were iin the 60's and 70's. The song moves me every time I hear it.

I like that John wrote this song in the style of a sea shanty that mariners would sing over a pint of ale in the galley. It almost makes it feel like you're on the ship. As a child in the 60s and 70s, I used to look forward to watching "The Undersea World Of Jacques Cousteau" every week. It gave us a glimpse of all the life that lives beneath the surface.

Calypso was the name of Jacque Cousteau's ship. John Denver sailed with Jacque Cousteau several times on research missions.
Others have already explained the name of "Calypso", but one interesting item is that when John joined Cousteau on the Calypso and SCUBA dove with him. But since John had such bad eyesight Jacques designed a mask with his eyeglasses prescription so he could see while diving. This song transports you to the sea and can imagine the dolphins swimming right next to you.
John Denver gave all the royalties from the song to The Cousteau Society. He truly gave back to nature.

I was raised with this! Jacques Cousteau, Wild America, Cosmos, Nova ...etc! John Denver was not only an amazing musician but an amazing NATURIST! Sir David Attenborough is as amazing as him in educating people in how important our interaction with nature is, and making us aware of how we can help as well as prevent harm!
I saw John about 15 times in concert this song always got a standing ovation

I saw Denver live in 1975. It was absolutely the best concert I had ever been to. I've been to many rock concerts since. It's still the best concert I have been to. Denver did not need autotune. They used very little effects on his voice.
A truly beautiful song about one of the greatest scientists of the last century, Jacques Cousteau. The father of Oceanography. A French national treasure. Scientist, conservationist, explorer, and so much more.

In the late 1960 and early 1970s there would be an occasional Jacques Cousteau documentary during family time on TV. These docs were often narrated by Rod Serling. They may still be posted on TH-cam and are worth watching especially if you love shows about the ocean. Jacques Cousteau and his team made many contributions to ocean science.
John Denver’s music was pure magic! You can actually feel the songs story…a superb tribute to captain Cousteau.

You miss a-lot if you do not see the original video. Cousteau was a pioneer in marine biology and oceanography and his television specials were a huge part of my life growing up. Of course his ship CALYPSO was legendary.Cousteau and his team converted it to a research vessel from a surplus navy mine sweeper. Cousteau was one of the original inventors/developers of today's SCUBA diving equipment that made under sea exploration possible for millions.
John Denver was an environmentalist and simply the best folk singer of his time.
The films of Captain Cousteau inspired a generation of people to explore and love the oceans. I am one.

Sadly this video is not the one featuring footage of 'The Calypso' the ship Jacques Cousteau sailed the World in exploring the ocean's and bringing to our homes every week on TV. As a scuba diver I owe that to Jacques Cousteau as he invented SCUBA, everyone was pretty much a hard hat diver before. He had a cool Manta Ray like sub as well. He loved the oceans.

This is my favourite John Denver song, and I love pretty much everything he’s done.
The beat is patterned off a sea shanty and works so well with this song. His voice is also soaring in this song. The cymbals rising sound like waves splashing on the bow of a ship.

John was a straightforward, gracious, and sincere person, as you could see from his on stage demeanor. He appeared on TV a lot, like on "The Muppet Show," and again played a very earnest lead character in the movie "Oh, God!" I doubt he was flawless, but he had such a squeaky clean public image it was almost a parody. As for Cousteau, he was very famous for his nonprofit work. He co-invented the SCUBA / Aqua-Lung. His shows were regularly watched on PBS, from '66 to '82. I think a shared opinion between Cousteau and Denver was that "The glory of nature provides evidence that God exists." The Bill Murray comedy "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou" is very loosely based on Jacques Cousteau.
His son Phillipe carries on with his fathers legacy of exploration and learning of the earth and how to respect it and showing us what an awesome world of beauty and wonderment we live in the planet the human race calls home.

My first concert was John Denver, 1975, around when this song was played a lot on the radio. I remember sitting through the concert just hoping, wishing, willing him to play Calypso. He did near the end, I was a happy 12 y.o. boy. Got to see him again maybe a year before he passed.

John Denver has been one of my favorite singer/songwriters since I first heard "Take Me Home Country Roads". I play his albums when I need inspiration or am driving in beautiful natural areas. He has so many hits and fantastic songs that people will mention but there is one called "Rhymes and Reasons" that resonates so much with what's going on in the world today and then gives hope. I hadn't heard it in a long time, then heard it on the radio and just burst into tears. It's really beautiful and so meaningful. John know how to touch a piece of one's soul. Great job!

When i was in jr high school in the early 70's, watching the Jacques Cousteau tv specials were a must watch and make a book report on for an extra A on your science class grade at the end of the semester.

A friend got to see him in concert in the 70's in Los Angeles. He used a full orchestra as backup to his band. He was also a master guitarist, rated one of the best in the world at that time.
I used to watch Jaques Cousteau as a kid. John became good friends with him because of their shared love of nature and environmental protection. Great song! Please listen to John Denver's song "Annie's Song." It's one of the most beautiful love songs ever. Also, one of his most famous songs.

John Denver is one opf my favorite singer/songwriter personalities ever. Saw one of his concerts live in Tokyo in the mid 1970s; it was great.

Ah ... The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau ... what a great series of shows. The orchestration had many elements common to songs of the sea. One of the things you should listen for, especially at the end, is the rhythmic swelling of sound including a rising harp glissando and a quickening cymbal to a crescendo with a crash cymbal. This pulses over and over while he is yodeling and gives an orchestral version of waves crashing against the shore. Truly a wonderful bit of orchestration.
I like the fact you guys mentioned the word Folk. Mr. Denver started out in a group called the Chad Mitchell Trio.I only know this because my mom had an album or 2 by them. Denver's voice is one of the purest voices my ears have listened to.👍
John Denver's golden voice could be heard weekly on his TV variety show singing and comedy skits in (1973) He also stars in Oh God a Comedy Movie from (1977) He was a huge star in those years, Fly Away is a beautiful song by him and Oliva Newton John.

Jacques Cousteau was one of the people who invented SCUBA gear. As such he was one of the first to explore the oceans. The specials that he and his crew put out were some of the highlights of television back in my grade school days. John Denver was a fan and got a chance to meet them and spend some time on the ship. It was then that he wrote the song Calypso.
this was john's tribute to famed french oceanographer/explorer/conservationist jacques cousteau whose ship was named calypso. john went aboard on a voyage and was so moved by the experience he composed this fabulous song. jacques also developed the SCUBA (self-contained underwater breathing apparatus) gear for diving.

This song combined John Denver's two passions. Music and wildlife conservation. It's a tribute to Jaques Cousteau and his research vessel Calypso. Cousteau was the most prominent ocean conservation voice of the era and Denver was a huge fan of his work and message.
I was a member of the Cousteau Society. Jacques Ives Cousteau was Ana amazing man. He actually was the inventor of the aqualung. Its unfortunately they couldn't save the Calypso, it was far too damaged to save.

I've been a JD fan since 1973-4. I received my first album for high school graduation. This is my second favorite song. My first is "The Eagle and the Hawk". You should watch the official video of this song. He would have celebrated his 80th birthday this past Sunday, Dec. 31.
I hope your next song of his, is Thank God I'm A Country Boy. No other song, in his catalog, sounds like it. I can almost guarantee you'll be clapping your hands, tapping your foot, or moving in some way, during the song. I don't normally like when a live version of a song is reacted to. Another cool tidbit about this song is it was originally the "B side" of the 45 single "I'm Sorry". Some DJ's started playing "Calypso" and it got so popular that the record company flipped the sides on the 45 and it's now considered a dual hit #1 since it was flipped when "I'm Sorry" was at the top of the charts.

Jacques Cousteau was the first to show us the undersea world. He invented the "aqua lung" and the equipment that could take us as individuals under the sea. (Previously, there were submersibles, but not personal breathing aparatus like what he invented). In the 60's he had documentary shows showing where he went and the world he explored. John Denver went on a cruise with him and this was his tribute to Jacques Cousteau and his ship, the Calypso. FOr those of us who grew up with his documentaries, we share this passion so incredibly expressed in this song.
Jauc costo was also the inventor of the aquelang, which was now. Our packs that we used to go down and be able to explore the sea. There are many things about Jack costo that you could learn.

When that song came out I think in the 1980s everyone knew exactly where the title came from, it was so obvious not one would even think to ask that question. Today, for example it someone wrote a song about 9/11 or maybe the "spy balloon" everyone would know, but a generation later many people do not know.
Jacques Cousteau was an amazing man. He is called the inventor of scuba diving, as he helped design the re-breather that allowed longer periods of time under the water, and also helped invent the 'diving saucer' which allowed exploration of the deep ocean. His book 'The Silent World' was adapted into a movie and marked the first time underwater cinema was used, and of course there was his TV show that introduced a generation to the importance of the oceans. He was a life-long advocate for environment protection and helped stop nations from dumping their garbage and nuclear waste in the sea. One of his sons, Philippe, was his 2nd in command and became as popular as his father until he was killed in a seaplane crash. Jacques' oldest son, Jean-Michael, took Philippe's place at his father's side. Cousteau and John Denver became friends over their mutual desire to protect the environment and Denver went on several voyages with the team on Cousteau's famous research ship, Calypso.

Calypso was a surplus WW2 minesweeper, modified for the Monoco Oceanographic Institute. Sadly after Jacques passed away, the ship was abandoned at the dock. the wooden hull rotted and it sank at the pier.
However, it is now being restored to sail again.
She was actually hit by a barge in Singapore and sank there. She's been raised and towed to France, where the restoration is being attempted.

Jacques Cousteau was incredible, you should look up some of his documentaries, they are very educational and entertaining. He co-invented the first successful open-circuit self-contained underwater breathing apparatus, called the Aqua-Lung, which assisted him in producing some of the first underwater documentaries.
