  • Ron from www.newrecordd... reviews the Parasound Halo Integrated Amplifier!
    If you find yourself watching my channel and scratching your head wondering where is a good place to begin your hifi adventure, allow me to jump in the car with you and to help you out along the way. The Parasound Halo Integrated brings its 'A' game to the listening rooms of audio enthusiasts, and it keeps up with systems which cost a small fortune. Are there room for improvements when you spend more money? Sure, but let me be clear--the diminishing returns you’ll be rewarded with won't feel like much of reward to your pocket book. Save the money and start with the Halo Integrated. It isn’t just good enough for now. No, it offers a level of fidelity which will make you pull over to the side of the road and realize you’ve already arrived…"

    Ron...outstanding review and a beautiful integrated. While I'm not really a tone control kind of guy (my Krell S300i and Musical Fidelity M3i have no tone controls, and I'm perfectly ok with that), Parasound have yet again outdone themselves with this intregrated. It's just beautiful and I'm sure it sounds every bit as wonderful as you describe...and a PHONO input to boot! Keep up the great work. I'm very much enjoying the more sophisticated and detailed (yet still laid-back and approachable) nature of your recent reviews.

    For me it is all about value for the dollar. I'm using a Parasound 200 pre-amp with outlaw audio monoblocks. All in for the gear cost $1,100.00. Still lusting for a Halo, but not ready to drop that much on a pre amp.
    Keep up the great work.

    I bought it used for about half the original price, I have an audiophile friend who saw it online and saw the challenges I was having running my Klipsch rp-600m's (I know, I bought into the hype, but I started with Klipsch on my desk over 20 years ago with their Pro-Media series desktop speakers/sub). So I got into serious audio and got the Yamaha S202 from best buy while I waited for my IOTAVX SA3 to arrive from England. Yamaha did fine, even with the tint of noise and I played with the IOTAVX to really listened once they arrived and really compared the two for hours and days of listening. IOTAVX was 50w/channel vs Yamaha 100w. IOTAVX made me happy inside but not much more than the Yamaha. So my audiophile friend told me this Parasound HINT was online used and he literally said, "just do it you will not regret it". So I bought it even before seeing this very accurate review, 5 years since its release and this thing absolutely knocked my socks off with joy. You had the same smile while listening to the same song (btw thanks for introducing me to Madeleine Peyroux) that I did. It was no longer an internal joy, you could see the joy this amp brought to me outside thanks to the smile on my face. This amp with 600m's is ridiculous for a desk but it is soooooo magical and I know for sure that I'll use this HALO in my journey years from now. Thank you for an excellent review and now maybe I'll go into the vinyl world which my friend calls, "a dark rabbit hole".

    Another key way of pulling off the insanity road and into the happy layby, is to do what I do, only buy second hand goods. That way every single hifi component you buy, some other poor audiophile has risked his marriage and has lost 50% -75% of his money on each component ready for you to pick it up cheap as chips. Want hi end but for mid fi prices? My speakers were 40% of their new price, my DAC was 30% of it's new price, etc. So I now have a high end system for not high end money! I wouldn't change it for any other way.

    Another Parasound to consider in this price range is the Zonemaster 2350 and it's corresponding preamp. the 2350 has a wall shaking 275 (8 ohms) and 400 (4 ohms) watts per channel and it sounds great, not "just for Class D" but in general. Have not had the opportunity to test the Hint 6 vs. the Zonemaster, but the Zonemaster amp and preamp package is about the same price range as the Hint 6, and if ludicrous power is your thing, the Zonemaster is hard to fault.

    With all due respect, I just tried one of these in my system and found it disappointingly thin and remarkably bland. I thought this response might be conditioned by having had a tube integrated for the last 10 years, so as an experiment, I alternated the Halo with a hybrid integrated (100 watts class A/B, SS coupled with 2 X12au7 pre-amp section). This was my first experience with a hybrid and I had no idea what to expect. In fact, I preferred it over both the Halo and the tube amp, which now strikes me as excessively polite, although still musical. Couldn't say that about the Halo; I kept turning up the volume, hoping it might suddenly come alive but all I ended up with was a headache. CDP is modded, tubed Jolida JD100 and speakers are Silverline 17.5 monitors with Audio Art wire. Tomorrow, I'm shipping it back to the online vendor for a refund. Still enjoy your channel, though.

    • @cpg8000

      What integrated hybrid are you referring to? I think my experience mirrors yours w/ the HINT 6

    • @CrazyAboutVinylRecords
      @CrazyAboutVinylRecords 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That you didn't like the Parasound is only relevant for YOU. It doesn't mean other people will have the same experience with it and agree with you. It is not disrespectful to express your opinion, but it is pretty arrogant think that your experience and preference is the gospel for everyone else.

    Great review! I have been wanting to try this amp. I'd read good things about it, but the reviews always seemed a little reserved in their praise. Well, your review pushed me over the edge, mainly because of the Gallo 3.1's, which I also own. Others have called the HINT "lean, clinical, boring", that was not my experience at all!! This thing rocks!! Drives the Gallos really, really well. I even tried it with my highly modded Klipsch Fortes (ti-mids, ti-tweeters, ALK crossovers, damping, etc), which at 94db sensitivity, shouldn't need this much power. Holy smokes!! I have NEVER heard the Fortes sound so good. Smooth & detailed highs, with tight, deep, powerful low-end and a lifelike midrange. I'll definitely be keeping this amp. Thanks for the great review, which prompted me to give this thing a try. I love it!

    • @achn2b
      @achn2b 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Really? And you're probably listening at levels that only require maybe 10 watts at the most. What you want is an amp that can move a lot of current.

    • @achn2b
      @achn2b 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Extremely short peaks, maybe. But again, it's the current draw required to drive them properly, not the power rating. Even a speaker with an efficiency of 85db/1watt, will be playing at 94 db with 8 watts of power.
      You normally listen at 94db and higher?

    • @achn2b
      @achn2b 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Then that amp couldn't provide enough current.

    • @achn2b

    I have heard a bunch of good things from friends about the Parasound. I am interested in it as that will basically take most of my allotment for audio for a year or two. I am currently sporting a NAD C165 PreAmp and a Harmon Kardon PA2200 Power Amp that has had the caps replaced with audio standard caps. Along with upgraded wiring.She does have a very open airy sound now. But the NAD is lacking in Sound Stage if you ask me. But I am far from an expert. Thank you Ron That's your name is it not?

    I need some help from you all. I looked at this amp and a critical review said the tone controls weren't necessarily a good thing on this amp. I want to get an audiophile amp to start my system and it needs to be a 5.1 or 7.1 amp. I need to know some of your suggestions on an amp you think would be a great start to a budget conscious buyer. I don't mind spending a little more for a bigger bang, but I need to keep it under 2-3 grand for the amplifier components. This Parasound is a consideration if the tone controls aren't a big concern on this model. Thank you all in advance!

Just a simple observation: it seems as if a man has a fairly nice system prior to marriage, that the bride to be/bride has it focused on and, it will be her strategy to rid it from the relationship where, "she is the boss", ALL men be aware! Damn, I was really considering the Yamaha integrated, but was torn between the bargain of the 1100 and added features (and cost) of the 2100. This Parasound has all the features of the 2100 and then some, for the price of the 1100. I'm planning on pairing with Klipsch Forte IIIs, most likely without a sub, but it wouldn't hurt to have those options. And since most of my listening will be FLAC and streaming (for now) the DAC is a fantastic addition.

    • @mariosupa4027
      @mariosupa4027 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you don't mind me jumping into the conversation. Check out the Zero Fidelity channel upcoming review on Hint 6
      I have owned mine for about 2 months largely influenced by Ron's review of the previous Parasound Intergrated and it is absolutely one of the best bang for the buck audio pieces out IMHO quality build and I didn't expect the quality of the built-in Dac loving my Hint. The other intergrated amp I considered was the Anthem STR, but couldn't justify the extra cost for slightly more slam, analytical sound and room correction feature. The Hint 6 sounded more musical and warm to my ears at least. Hope this helps.

      @@mariosupa4027 Thank you for your input Mario, much appreciated. Congrats on your new Hint6!
      Feature-wise the Hint6 is definitely unbeatable. It has power as well, no doubt! There are a few things that keep drawing me to the Yamaha A-S2100 though, makes it hard to commit one way or the other:
      - The Phono stage of the Yamaha is better
      - The headphone section is discrete and much, much better than the Hint (where it's more of an after-thought, rather than a dedicated headphone section)
      - In terms of looks, the Yamaha is night-and-day better (of course, my opinion)
      - The aluminum remote control of the Yamaha looks and feels much better than the plasticky Parasound remote
      - I'm not sure if paying for a built-in Dac makes sense, when this technology evolves so quickly. I'd rather use an external Dac and change that as needed, while keeping the rest of my gear.
      - Contrary to popular belief the A-S2100 does have a subwoofer-out. I've examined the User Manual and a subwoofer can be connected, no problem. Not that I would need that, but it's there as an option.
      Having said that, the Parasound gear has all the other benefits we're all aware of, so it's really hard to choose. Anyways, just wanted to say thanks for chiming in!

    • @mariosupa4027

      Bro It sounds to me in your case it’s already a no brainner go with the Yamaha it’s fits your needs more than the Parasound. I have not auditioned the Yamaha sound if you’ve heard both the only question is which one sounds better to you. That’s truly the bottom line, I chose the Hint 6 over the STR for two reasons the sound and second for it’s bang for my buck. I have already had a separate phono preamp and I can always add a different Dac in the meantime I’m enjoying the built-in one that comes with it. Ron didn’t address that part of the previous model so it was a pleasant surprise. The remote functions fine though I would have liked a more solid aluminum one, but everything adds to the products price and I’m fine with it. Enjoy which ever one you decide to go with.

      @ericblucas13 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is just my opinion, but I think posting a video of "how the amp sounds" would be useless. You'd be hearing a recording of a system you're not familiar with, in a room you're not familiar with, thru who knows what kind of microphone, on who knows what kind of camera. The ONLY way to get a sense of what an amp sounds like, is to go listen to one. Or better yet, demo one with your speakers, in your room. That's the only way to know if you'll like it or not.

    Hmm. 10 Ohms output impedance on the headphone output is rather inexcusable on a piece of gear costing 2500 USD. Also, high-resolution audio files are pointless. There are several proper papers on why, but I feel the post on the xiph.org blog is best for those not wanting to brave academic papers.

    • @1301407gl
      @1301407gl 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      J Doe the thing is that after you record the audio from the amp through the speakers and the cameras mic it is then compressed by youtube then is reproduced by what ever speakers or headphones you're using to listen to this video therefore you won't be able to get the full sound that the amplifier actually makes

    Tried this and it's one of the most boring sounding amplifiers I've tried. Extremely neutral to the extend of clinical. Sure, everything is in place and you'd love it if you're a detail freak, and it moved me. In the sense that it moved me out of the room because I couldn't stand to hear such a bland sound.

    • @bennnnft
      @bennnnft 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was probably run in for a month or more, but the owner has since sold it. This is definitely not a musical amp. He paired it with the Lumin A1 and Monitor Audio GX100, both of which can sound pretty good when paired with other amps. But with the halo, man.. did it sound boring. Only redeeming quality was the powerful but controlled bass, but the mids to highs were awful.. I prefer a round, warmer kind of sound and smoothness, but the aforementioned combo had no hint of that.. only attack, sharp leading edges and a very clinical sound that I grew bored of in a matter of seconds.

      I can't fathom how some find this amp boring and clinical. It is neutral but not boring like many amps I tried, including the Yamaha that this reviewer thinks is superior. He apparently didn't listen to them back to back. The sound of the Halo is much fuller, it has more body and its detail doesn't come at the expense of musicality. That is the hallmark of any good class A/B design. If you like garbage amps that color the sound, look for one of those over-hyped tube, class D hybrid things.
