    The guy in the green shirt gets on my nerves - cuts off the other guy nonstop. Annoying AF. Couple of comments as a big Parasound fan here. John Curl designed both of these amps - directly. The original A21 and he was brought in specifically brought in to update the A21+. The JC 5 operates in Class A up to 12 watts. The A21+ operates in Class A up to 7 watts. The JC5 is a beast of an amp - just killer & obviously several steps about the A21+. But the A21+ is no slouch - killer bang for the buck!

    • @gordthor5351
      @gordthor5351 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bill Fife That is because it has 12 watts of pure class A (zero crossover distortion). It doesn't get any sweeter than class A. It's not an efficient class of amp and has to dump a lot of heat by keeping the transistors on 100% of the time, but the transition between the negative half of the wave form and positive half is seamless. Music is AC, thus has a positive and negative cycle. A good analogy is a relay race. A class B amp would sound like as$, because each relay racer would come to a full stop and pass off the baton. A class A/B amp is akin to the racer slowing to a jog to help keep the flow moving. A class A amp is sprinting constantly and the passing of the baton is seamless and never misses a beat (literally). Crossover distortion sucks and only class A can avoid it completely. My JC1s get quite toasty and I am just fine with that, because 25 watts of class A rarely has to dip into A/B mode, other than some louder dynamic sounds, where nuances aren't really lost. The level of class A bias never goes away when dipping into A/B mode. Most class A/B amps have very little class A bias, thus at normal listening levels the vocals and other delicate sounds will suffer from A/B mode distortion. Some people see warm amps as a bug, but it really is a feature for sound quality.

    Hey guys wish you posted more often! Btw the JC2 is the preamp for the JC5, the P6 is meant for the A21+. The JC2 is one of the best SS preamps under 5K in the world IMHO. Another shootout that could be very 'revealing' would be to do the JC2/JC5 stack for 10K against a 10K McIntosh. My money would be on the Parasound stack, as McIntosh gear is often (not always) overpriced IMHO for the sound quality you get (leaving aside build quality and bling factor etc.). FYI I am NOT a Parasound owner, I have CODA amps so really don't have a dog in the fight.

    • @mychaelhouck2404
      @mychaelhouck2404 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Apparently Vilip is a McIntosh homer. I've heard plenty of SS McIntosh gear, and my ears say the Parasound (even the A21+) destroys the McIntosh. I have an A21+ and a P6, and am considering pairing a JC5 with a P6. Mainly because the DAC/Phono in the P6 make it a lot more practical than the JC2.

    • @mychaelhouck2404
      @mychaelhouck2404 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@kevinpwoodward They sound is very similar. The biggest difference is the control of the bass. The A21 is 60 amps per channel vs. 45 amps from the A23. The other thing is 10 watts pure Class A from the A21 vs. like 2.5-3 from the A23. Both amps sound very neutral, with a slight hint on the warmer side. I pair them with Martin Logan Motion 40s which are bright (alum ribbons) leaning, so the pair is pretty perfect. I'm told they work awesome on B&W Diamonds which are also brighter. I'm a total homer, but my boss is a huge McIntosh guy, so I have heard Mac amps on my stereo. SS Mac is bright and fatiguing to my ears, where as I can listen to Halo amps for hours.
      The P6 is also a damn fine pre. Dead silent on my average efficiency Logans. Lots of digital inputs (which lets face it, that what we're connecting) to a DAC that really nice. I'd love a JC2, but it honestly would not make sense given that my sources are digital and phono, none of which the JC2 have. If you have the funds and space, P6/JC5 would probably be an endgame system. I'm actually considering selling my A21+, as I'm moving into a house with my girlfriend and will be moving my stereo into an office. An A23+ will probably take its place.

Parasound, Naim, Bryston (and of course much pricier Hegel) seem to be the 'go-to' amps in play. Worries me even that you would feel the need to trade up from A21... sigh. I have the A21 running through Martin Logan 60XT towers. This sounds very good to me; the ML’s have high efficiency (I think 94 dbl), which allows them to be played as loud as I would want with low distortion. The A21 powers the MLs with 400 watts per channel. I just wonder how much more power one could need in a typical home listening room? It seems very good to me. I play the A21 through the Schiit Freya+ preamp, and that sounds better to me than the Parasound P5 pre I was using before. I haven’t heard the P6 and don’t think I need to go there.

    I have a quick question.
    I am using a pair of vintage Qln Prestige Speakers, a McIntosh MC152 Power Amp & a Parasound Halo P6 Preeamp.
    I want to upgrade my system a bit....use the P6 ESS Sabre DAC & add in another preamp...either a JC2PB or perhaps a
    McIntosh C49.
    What would you say is the basic difference in sound between a Parasound John Curl (JC) designed preamp and that of a modern day McIntosh such as

    Thanks to Audio excellence for all the VIDEO. I'm from Luxembourg and your comments are generally appreciated. I don't understand the price positioning of this two Amp. The difference between both amp which you didn't mention is that the A21+ can be run in mono Block and for the JC5 it is not recommended by Parasound ( Have a copy of the mail from the dealer in Germany and Parasound themselves if you need it). So that's mean the price of 2 A21+ is nearly the price of one JC5.
    And i don't know if you tried the 2 A21+ in comparaison off one JC5. For info 2 JC5 in mono configuration is very expensive so in that case it's better to have pair of the JC1+.
    The reason I didn't buy this product is exactly for that confusion of the product positioning. I think that Parasound should have done a product price in between the A21+ and the JC5 then it will be a killer. In another hand I'm wondering why Stereophile has given a recommended component of the year 2020 to the Parasound A21+ and not JC5. That's mean something is wrong somewhere.
    I'm sorry to argue and I have nothing against Parasound but all that confusion gave me the feelings of a snake Oil Story.

      @@dilbyjones If you could let me know if a pair A21+ in mono is better than the JC1 than it is find for me. Sorry to bother you, you seam to be a serious shop about and you are a serious Hifi High end representative in Canada. That's why I'm speaking to you. Because Stores like you are rare even in Europe !
      Parasound is well made and I don't understand why the brand doesn't defend its product more. When Stereophile gives a criticism, there is always a background of truth even if it is all commercial.
      Don't think that I want to put you at a disadvantage, but as I have already told you, the fact that your videos are followed here in Europe is a proof of great confidence.

      Well, for one, keeping the preamp consistent highlights the actual differences in the amplifiers themselves, and shows that the JC5 will still outshine the A21+ significantly even with the P6 pre being the "limiting factor".
      ...which illustrates that the P6 in fact "holds its own" and still allows that an amplifier upgrade or swap itself can still scale up your system overall.

    My only experience with Parasound was with a JC3+ phono preamp. I had to return it because it had too much MM gain and was over driving the inputs on my Bryston BP17-3 preamp. Turns out my Bryston only plays nice with phono preamps with less than approx 46dB of MM gain. McIntosh amps color the sound period. If you like that, then you'll love your Mc. Parasound may give you a little color, but far more neutral. I'll take the more neutral amp everytime. Your best bang for the buck is to find yourself a used Hegel H30 in my personal tastes this amp is far better than all of the above. It is by far the more neutral amp with tons more dynamic's and better dynamic contrast better timber... Just a better amp all the way around. We get that you can listen or have the tops of the line equipment, but some of us are looking for information in this area and would like you to compare them on equal footing. You really need to evaluate these products compared to similar products. The A21 to JC5 is a good comparison, but for 100% more we know it should/will be better. Is the difference worth 100% more? Would be good if you add comments like the A21 is a good deal or this amp is a better deal for 1000 more or less... etc... hope that make sense. No need to compare to your favorite tube amp.

I thought it was a great match and appropriately priced for the setup. If I did again, I might opt for a pair of A21+ and biamp. I don't think you can have too much power with the L800 and I'm not sure they are resolving to the point where they really flush out every nuanced difference between the 21 and JC5. I'd opt for the more power over the SQ ..
