    I know tone is subjective, but I don't understand how anyone could dislike Dime's tone.

      i disliked ist because its to harsch and trebly(i dont know if thats a word but my english sucks because im from germany and 14) i think olas tone was actually better than dimes because it was a bit more mid focused and punchier. just my opinion

    • @niilonevalainen2884
      @niilonevalainen2884 6 ปีที่แล้ว +63

      too much bass and not enough mids. Mids are the body of the guitar sound (that's why mid's name in my amp is "body") and cutting too much mids you are kind of "stealing" from basses and kick drum's "area".

      Tbh I hate Dime´s Tone, even when I tried to play with it I couldn´t stand it. But the funny thing is that this is one of the reasons why I think Dime is an amazing player, somehow he turns that shitty tone into something amazing

    I knew Dime when he was 16 or 17 (met him in Arnold and Morgan music Garland TX; sat next to him and said who the f$%@ is this little skinny guy making monstrous tone with his fingers flying across the fretboard) and watched him play in clubs from the beginning of Pantera. I would talk to him frequently about his tone to the point he called me the "tone guy". I was not "friends" with him but playing in clubs and recording around the same time and we talked some. Before he played Randall's (he bought at Spear Music in Mesquite TX) he played a Yamaha solid state. I bought the same amp to mimic his tone and I/It sounded like sh#$. Yes, so much is in the fingers. I did incorporate a Randall RG100ES into my rig paired with a 50w JCM 800 (his advice on two amps one cleanish and one nasty; the Randall was my nasty one). It sounded wonderful; very different from his but his advice worked. Dime was always so nice at sharing whatever he could to help other musicians. He really lived for the music. I also saw Randy Rhoads live (my guitar hero) about month before his death. So many good ones go way to early.

      That's an awesome story, thank you for sharing. I think that's the main reason people have the connection with Dime that they do..he was just a guy..just a normal guy...I've never heard a bad thing about him. and i think even more so than his music, the reputation he left behind as a human being will last, and mean more, than he was as a musician...which was huge. sorry if that phrasing is a little off...i'm a tad buzzed.

      The actual answer to that is get a metal distortion pedal (Boss MetalZone or Behringer Ultra Metal) with a mid sweep, then find a mid freq. that is similar to the one boosted by Fortin Grind's and 33's (Around 2 or 3K, quite high on the mid sweep knob, close to or pretty much at max) boost highs, cut bass, palm mute above the pickup, use a good, bright, tight humbucker, and that's it. Ola's tone for 30 bucks (Provided you get a generic but good Aliexpress PU and the Ultra Metal...)

    I read all his guitar magazine interviews. He was pretty open about what he used. Ola is very close, but don't forget a tweaked Crybaby, a Whammy pedal set to pitch up with the rocker, and his secret, that he didn't completely reveal, some sort of rackmount flanger set to a very minimal amount of depth and speed. He said it was a "very tight" flange on "almost all the time" and "the one secret he wanted to keep". Also, some of those riffs are supposed to be in drop-D and the "harmonics" on 'Mouth for War' was actually done by pressing the strings against the neck pickup, as least in the studio.

      I’ve had a little PRS SE 24 for about 10 years that I put a Seymour Duncan Pegasus/Sentient set in years ago and just recently installed a Graphtech Ghost piezo system into the saddles and man, that little guitar does metal so well! Quarantine happened and decided to install a piezo system after years of wanting one. I ordered a new bridge and drilled some holes to make room for the piezo saddles, upgraded the tuners to SE locking tuners and had it wired so there’s a master electric volume with a push/pull coil split and the tone knob is now a piezo acoustic volume. Its set up to C# standard +40cents dimebag style and honestly ive never had so much fun playing guitar. Using bias fx for the dimebag tone and have the acoustic going through an interface and being able to play all the acoustic parts then switch immediate to electric in Pantera’s songs is awesome! Had to share because my only amp
      Is a fender as well haha happy playing

    Well for me it was still not close. Dime's drive had amazing overtones (almost like octaver before drive) when played squeals or higher notes. I remember when I tried Boss MT-2 (I know what you are thinking about it) it had amazing overtones and reminded Dime's tone. Knowing that MT-2 have pre-distortion EQ built in with bass & hi-mid peaks give me idea that Dime used those EQ with boosting Highs and maybe bass too (or cutting mids).
    So there's some food for thought.

    • @crazyerko
      @crazyerko 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      NeZversTutorials Nope, he always boosted the mids the most on the mxr eq and the PQ units, I've researched the exact settings. His rg 100 settings were bass 7, mid 4, high 5. Where some scooping possibly happened was an aphex exciter in the effect loop

    • @modal_derp
      @modal_derp 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have that pile of shit pedal too, and I modded it. I find it best do use it as a boost, to make sure the mids are higher than the rest, and then tweak the amp. Sounds punchy af. Usually my bass ends up slightly above 12 oclock, and my ever so slightly below 12, or if it's off, then i increase the a bit. But then I have a SD Dimebucker, and that's one hell of a great high-gain passive pickup.

      This guy's a riot. If one rail is hotter than the other, flipping it regardless of the pole pieces will have an effect on the tone.

      Thing is, the coils are the same. Each has a pair of identical magnets and the same amount of winding, there is no "hot" coil, as confirmed by Bill himself. And the same goes for majority of humbuckers (except those which have different coils, like DiMarzio Crunch Lab). It's a placebo more than anything. The only way I see it could make a difference is because of poor quality control (cuz both B&B and BLUSA have never been major manufacturers) resulting in slightly more winding on one coil.

      Yep, I have 500XLs in two of my guitars, I tried flipping them around for shits and giggles and it did absolutely nothing. They sound like shit thru a tube amp anyway, most of my guitars have Duncan distortions and they reign supreme! With the exception of an old Jackson J80 p'up that's been in and out of some of my guitars over the years and that p'up sounds great.

    Another thing about Dime's tone was he didn't scoop the mids like most metal players do. He didn't exactly boost his mids but definitely didn't scoop them. It's funny how most metal players avoid mids like it's the plague. Like if it has any mids then it's not metal. Haha silly!
    Dime's tone was brutal.

  • @themodernguitarist
    @themodernguitarist 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I tried the overdrive technique, but I felt using an actual MXR EQ like Dime did was much more accurate. Gave the tone that buzzsaw sound he's known for, while the OD pedal made it a bit too smooth.

    • @themodernguitarist
      @themodernguitarist 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tred both a Tubescreamer and SD-1. Much preferred the EQ pedal. When I did a 6-band EQ with an extreme frowny face, it nailed the Dime tone.

    • @themodernguitarist
      @themodernguitarist 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually I think it's because of the opposite. You can dial in the MXR to be EXTREMELY mid crunchy. Like, much more than a Tubescreamer or SD-1. When I tested it out, doing a 6-band with the mids in an extreme frowny face nailed it. The attack and buzzsaw was there. When I tried the TS or SD-1, there was still lots of mud and the precise attack wasnt there. It sounded more "tubey" while the 6-band gave it that extremely artificial attack that Dimebag had.

    • @AlexRamosDrTaz
      @AlexRamosDrTaz 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. I don't have a 10 band EQ, but some of the others might work nearly as well. I use an older Danelectro Fish N Chips (7 band + output level), and it works well for a Dimebag rhythm tone. I also use it for old school Slayer tones and whatever else.

    After the noise gate was introduced there was also a very weird metallic fizz at the end of sound when the gate closes. Would be nice to hear a workaround for that. Other than that, wow! You got a really ballsy sound. Ballsier than Dimebag's tone was on record (I think you had more punch and low end than he used) and I preferred your tone for those riffs. Maybe I'm thinking too much of the first records though. Well done Ola. The gain structure was definitely right but I think Dime's tone was a lot thinner on the first albums. That's probably why I prefer your approach to his sound. Good video.

      Amp EQ changed a little bit between albums from what I understand. Scooped mids in early work and a bit more mids later on. Regarding strings, here's a quote from him. "“I’m using two different custom-gauged sets of DR strings which will soon be released as signature sets. One set is .009-.046 set and the other is .009-.050. I use the heavier strings on the lower tunings.“ Btw, those strings are now made by DR Strings.

    It took a very long time, before Audio Engineers had learned the totally different terrain of solid state circuitry music tone amplification design (vs. tube/valve circuitry), well enough, to be able to offer the music making community a broad selection of different types of good-sounding, very usable tonalities. Long after I had been deeply involved with the band scene, I began hearing, inserted into different TV shows, bits and pieces of excellent rock guitar playing, with this distinctive, massive-sounding, grinding-distorted guitar tone, that was instantly recognizable! Having heard it here and there, I wondered, "Who the heck is that?". Eventually, I discovered Pantera & Dimebag Darrell Abbott, and realized that I had been either hearing excerpts from Dimebag's playing, or hearing someone playing with Dimebag's style & sound. I understand that, for most of his career, he had an exclusively solid-state signal chain for his distinctive sound! Dimebag's style not only was right for the times, it's still exciting to listen to. His contribution was huge!
