    Like so many others, I got started in RC because Flite Test finally made this hobby accessible and affordable while taking away the fear of crashing. I can't begin to tell you what an honor it is to have an opportunity to give something back to the Flite Test family. Thanks for allowing me to be a part of this journey Flite Test, I'm truly humbled and blessed.

    I think the great thing about making foamboard planes is just how quick easy and fun of a process is... and there is no where near the same amount of fear of crashing a foamie than a balsa model! Flitetest has made this hobby so much more accessible!!!

    Thanks, Josh, and a big Thank You to Dan!!! These plans are much easier to match up than the older ones. I usually use the paper and trace it on the foamboard, making dotted cuts through the paper into the foam, and then connecting the dots. Keep it up!

    I use my DLP Projector and lightly hot glue the Foamboard on the wall. Use a digital caliper to scale the image to match the scaling on the plans. SO easy to quickly trace out a new peace when I screw it up. That's how I built my FT Cruser. :)

    Hello fellow builders. I'm working on my first FliteTest airplane. A Baby Blender.
    I did not want to do the template transfer thing so I picked up a bundle of 100 lbs 8/12 X11 card stock. Normal printer paper is 20 pound. 100 lbs is heavy business card paper.
    Then Printed Baby Blender and Power pod right on the card stock. Worked great! Anyone wanting to try this. Ether 80 or 100 pound paper 8 1/2 X 11 will work.
    Thanks Josh and the FliteTest team having a blast.

    I never thought of making poster board templates. What a great idea. I have been using a pin to mark all of the corners and curves, then connecting the pin holes. This basically ruins the plan when I am done.

    Something I've done to make things easier is taking the full size plans to Office Depot (they're close by) and having the full size plans printed on one sheet. It usually about $3 per page for black and white, but it's worth it to me to avoid piecing the tiled pages together.

  • @wlouisharris
    @wlouisharris 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video. Someone had already clued me in on Sponz's process. Another tip they should mention is taking the full plans to Kinko's. If you print them in black and white they cost about 4 bucks a page; color is something like 20 dollars a page. If you are pressed for time like I am, it's the only way to go. The other tip is you have to use really sharp blades or you get an uneven cut.

    how do you guys scale up the models while keeping the reference lines intact? I want to build the guinea pig but not to the scale of 58" wingspan, but rather 108" like in the watermelon video...
    Seems like if you scale the drawing, you scale the important reference points as well....

    Hi Josh and the whole FliteTest team.
    I'm just getting started with fixed wing aircraft but i have a lot of multirotor experience. Which scratchbuild do you recommend in respect of ease of building, ease of flying, versatility (3ch, 4ch) and maybe even looks, for a beginner?
    Preferably with the new template plans.

    without going to the extent of an article as suggested. I just wanted to leave a comment here about the ft 22 free downloadable plans. In the most constructive kind of way I just wanted to mention that maybe you guys could check these plans, because when they are taped together there is a bow on the paper which in some cases causes the builder to put the plans together incorrectly. Sometimes the lines for the cut out slots will be out of alignment. I've been a modeler in RC 4 a while in these scratch build plans and speed belts are really neat looking. I especially think I would like to try this Corsair because I had just purchased an old balsa Guillows kit that looks like it is close to being the same size. Cool stuff you have here. Just wanted to help.

    My first attempt to print plans of yours. I have a Hp color all in 1 printer and when I tried to print out the plans and then checked them against your 1" scale on top I could not get my printed copies to match your scale i.e. your 1" scale was only 7/8" on my copy and no matter which copy of your plan (4) I printed out they all came out 1" = 7/8" and I had no way to adjust my copy magnification to for example 105%. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Otherwise I love what you guys do and just bought your Cessna 150 Commuter kit to build. Thanks Richard

    This is kind of what I do. Instead of cutting it out again on posterboard, I laminate the pieces after I loosely cut them out and then trim it up after they are laminated. This allows you to still see the lines and writing on the plans and they last as long or longer than posterboard.

      @cruesavage5456 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +TheAdkFlyer10 or a light plywood or balsa so that you could use a hot wire to cut it. Thats one of my biggest problems, getting my cuts to be perfectly angled and straight.

      +the 142 Not going to hurt sales, you don't buy "speed build" kits because you need a better template. After you cut out about 10 scratch builds you realize that the fun doesn't really start until you get out the glue gun!

      +TheAdkFlyer10 Great idea. Just a guess but I guess it would cost about the same to buy the poster cut-outs. Then they have to create a whole other process to create the poster-board cut-outs. If they can't sell the same volume it may not be worth it. If I'm going to order anything, I'll just go ahead and order the kits, but that's just my take.

    What I do as soon as I fall in love with a new FT Model, I get the plans, rearrange them so they fit on a smaller space and go to a local copyshop and get them printed out on posterboard. This way I don´t have to have two layers of paper!

  • @vonSchwartzwolfe
    @vonSchwartzwolfe 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    There is a lot less work if you print the plans right onto paper sized card stock. no gluing paper to the card stock or poster board. just cut out the parts after you tape the printed sheets of card stock together, :) been doing this for making wood working templates for years.

    I use the repositionable spray adhesive, spray super light coat to the plans and put the plans directly on the foam board. Then I cut through the plans and foam board, peel the plan off the cutout and discard. Wastes more paper than this template version but is less work and very easy.

    • @DanielSponholz
      @DanielSponholz 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Henk Hatzmann The tiled plans are universal. They are designed to work on U.S. Letter (8-1/2 X 11 inches) and A4 (210 X 297 millimeters) without any scaling issues. All you need to do is make sure that you print to actual size or 100% scale and it will work for both. This format for the tiled plans evolved from the Flite Test community on the Flite Test forums. If you have any ideas or suggestions to help improve the free plans, you can join the discussion here:

  • @WWoodyW
    @WWoodyW 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Spray adhesive? That sounds pretty messy, though I've never used the stuff. I've been making them out of card stock which is nice and thick. I can easily hold a template to the poster board while I score around the edges with a blade. Once the plan is outlined with score cuts it's easy to put the template aside and finish the cuts. If you try and cut all the way through with the template still in place, it's easy to cut through the template by mistake. You say the plans using this method are reusable, but I've found that regular printer paper plans get messed up too easily which is not a problem with card stock.

      +AimlessMoto What program are you using to print them with? I would highly recommend using Adobe Reader for the best, most consistent results. In the Print options under Page Sizing, make sure you select either Actual Size or Custom with a value of 100%. I always use the latter. Never try to print the plans directly from your browsers built-in PDF viewer.

      +Jorge Galan It's Flite Test Foam, which is essentially the same as what you can buy at Dollar Tree. It's often referred to as DTFB or Dollar Tree Foam Board. The actual name of the material is Adams Readi-Board.

    Wish I had the machines you guys use for cutting. So much time spend cutting manually.

      I would cut them manually but I buy the kits they sell just to help support the great videos they put out every week

      I can't stress enough how much of a time saver the speed build kits are. I printed plans and scratch built five Flite Test planes before I bought my first speed build kit and I will never be printing plans again. Its a great way to support their business and I would say it cuts 2/3 of the build time.

      +Rcbif See my top post on printing out the full plans. I'll NEVER print out and cut tiled plans. It takes several hours to cut and piece the tiled plans together. Just head over to Kinkos with a thumb drive and they will print on a plotter for 4 bucks a sheet.
