ongrats Barb and Jim from New Jersey, 349 is a beauty. So much is packed in this 349 that compares to a 40 footer. As you have just purchased your 349, I think it is important for you to learn about my person experience just 3 weeks ago. I bought a 2002 380 last November and sailed her from Gibraltar to Vilamoura Portugal last month in May 2024. We went through a Force 8 and Force 10 weather with winds exceeding 60+ knots. The skipper I hired to sail her to Vilamoura was less than qualified for this role. We were sailing with Head Sails(HS) only and he did not reef when the wind began to exceed 25, 30 and 35 knots. We were then caught in multidirectional strong winds and heavy sea as we turned corner towards Cadiz in Spain. This saga happened in pitch darkness of the night. The HS started to dance violently side to side and the force of the wind on the big sail jammed and damaged the electric winch. He (the skipper) then turned off the autopilot and asked me to manual steer the boat. The boat didn't want to know any of that and she started to round quickly and the boat was out of control no matter what force I put on the steering wheel. The skipper was trying to release the sheet (the line), trying everything he could think off instead of cutting the sheet and reel in the sail with the starboard winch. He then went on the phone calling his Mentor/instructor for advice and finally he was told to cut the sheet to release the HS. This happened some 15/20 minutes later while we where in sea conditions of Force 8 and above. It was like being on a roller coaster ride and the respectable IP 380 showed her true colours of a strong built yacht. The HS was damaged badly as a result of mistakes made by a trained RYA sailor. We were not hooked up for bad weather, we did not even have safety vests on all through out the bad weather. So, he failed on the safety front as well. Yet, the IP 380 kept us safe and dry. Island Packets are very forgiving boats. Although, this was a very bad example of how sailings must not be done, yet what I learned about my beautiful 380 is that I can cross blue waters with peace of mind knowing my crew and I will be safe and protected. The same goes for you, although I wish you both fair weathers and following seas and pleasant experiences. Give me a shout if you guys make it down to Algarve, Portugal or Dubai.

Nice boat. My complaint is the rear deck is extremely cluttered with bimini junk. You hardly have access to the rear cleats.
we have found this to be true but of course, it doesn't cancel out the many other positive aspects. we are getting used to it.

at the St Pete boat show we saw the 439 that had washer/dryer and generator. basically a utility room. it was just so amazing.

we look at it as a decoy. the valuables will be hidden elsewhere so they can think they are getting something if they steal the safe.
