How to push start three different manual cars with a flat battery.

  • How to push start a car with a flat battery. This method is also known as bump starting and clutch starting. I demonstrate the process in three different cars with different starting systems - key start, key less start and key and push button start.
    Doing this can be dangerous as your brakes and steering will be stiff until the engine is started.

    Great tip!! I would use 2nd gear and get up to about 10mph so it doesn’t slow down as much. If you own a diesel car and if you need to roll/bump start it, it requires to build up more speed and have it in the higher gear due to higher compression in the engine. I love when you drive a different car and teaching us how to drive a different car!😊

  • @averyalexander2303
    @averyalexander2303 2 ปีที่แล้ว +48

    Great demonstration as always! From my experience, higher gears like 2nd or 3rd or even higher depending on the speed and gear ratios are definitely better for bump starting. Remember that you don't need to spin the engine very fast to start it, the starter only spins it at around 200-300 RPM anyways. My Honda Civic bump starts in 5th gear at about 10 MPH very easily and smoothly and I'm sure it would start even lower than that. This is a good thing to practice before you actually need to do it too, somewhere safe of course.

    6:50 well, first gear has very stiff engine braking. Second gear could do if your battery is totaly flat. Or maybe even third. So, you can drive engineless for a few meters, for the alternator to turn a bit, for the battery to come into life that tiny bit thats needed for the "normal" push start

    • @scotte2815
      @scotte2815 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, with a fuel injected engine you will need enough battery power to run the fuel pump(s) and the ignition system.

    • @Lionn8563
      @Lionn8563 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@scotte2815 yes, so a little roll will "turn the alternator, that will charge up the battery" and then you can try and roll start it again. I've seen a guy who's bike wouldn't even click, and he was on the top of pikes peak. He just rolled it down in gear, that didnt start the engine, but at the bottom he had enough charge to start it up like its a new battery.

    • @scotte2815
      @scotte2815 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Lionn8563 That's true if you have enough distance. The fuel pressure required for fuel injection is quite Higher than for carbs (I love a good carb) I'm not sure how much battery power is needed for this but it has to be there to get the fuel pressure the injectors need to operate.
      Maybe somebody will test or has already tested this out with batteries at various levels of charge. That would be interesting

  • @MichaelFlatman

    Re the 2nd gear thing.
    Fuel injection cars can start at much lower RPMs than you think
    I've nearly stalled my car a few times, and have seen it claw it's way back into life from a meager 250rpm. Not a happy engine at that speed (250rpm idle would be silly) but it will try..!
    It just needs to be held above this speed for a certain amount of time to do the start (fuel ignition etc)
    2nd gear will slow the car down less (lower engine braking) so it might have a better chance of staying above start RPM.
    Bumpstarts are rarely smooth though anyway.

    Back in Soviet Union, I saw so many times people starting cars using this method. Unfortunately I used as well a lot. We had old cars with unreliable batteries and real winter. Conditions that even a good battery will not start your car in the morning, when outside is -20 degrees. We rather use 2nd gear and 3rd than 1st. 1st is very harsh and could damage your engine and gear when it's cold outside. I remember I time when I started like that every morning my old Fiat Croma.

    I’m currently driving, I start when I was 18 and did about 20 lessons with my instructor and was pretty confident, I had loads of work and uni etc at the time so I stopped and lost all confidence when my mum took me out in her car, but 3 years later and I’m learning again. I find myself so anxious to drive now though and get so so nervous before every lesson and I don’t know why because nothing awful has ever happened! i just feel huge pressure to perform perfectly. I’ve brought my own car to practice in with my mum but I’ve had a couple of times when I’ve stalled and then it puts me off again! My question is: does every learner go through this nervousness when they’re learning or should I raise this to someone for extra help

      Not everyone goes through this but plenty of people do. You need to accept you will do things badly before you do them well. Trying to do it well from the start is an understandable overload of pressure.

    If it's a Fuel injected engine, and all modern cars are, you will need enough battery power to operate the electric fuel pump(s) along with the ignition system.
    The old fashioned Carburetors had fuel in a reservoir, called a bowl, and they handled push starting very well.

    • @schwarzerritter5724
      @schwarzerritter5724 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The fuel pump still uses far less electricity than the ignition motor.

      @@schwarzerritter5724 Took me a while to figure what you were saying. By "ignition motor" do you mean "starter motor"?
      It's true that the STARTER motor pulls HUGE amounts of current,
      butt,
      we are talking about a situation where we do not have enough battery power to operate the STARTER motor to start the car. My point is that if the battery is completely dead in a modern car then there won't be any power for anything. The fuel pumps won't operate so there will be no fuel pressure to the injectors.

      I have never seen a completely dead battery though. Just a battery that does not have enough power left for the starter motor.

      @@schwarzerritter5724 I have. I've seen batteries in such low state that they wouldn't run anything.
      I've also seen cars and planes that don't have batteries and do just fine without them.

    I don't have a hill or a pusher, is it at all realistic to push it yourself with the driver's door then jump in, throw it in first and release the clutch?

    Why bring the clutch to the bite instead of dropping it completely? I tend to drop it, is bringing it to the bite point better?

    Oh my gawd! I hate this stressful situation... That is one of the reasons why I hate cars and machines in general because when just one little thing mess up and the whole machine doesn't work anymore...

    Hello can I ask smth. I’ve driven a lancer and a swift (both manual). Why do the car reverse when I come off the brake(either the hand brake or the brake beside the gas) in 1st gear?

      Also to add, I wasn’t on any slope downhill or uphill.

      You may be on a very slight hill or just and even bit of road like a bump. Your car is very good at finding the absolute lowest bit of ground.

    I think second gear works better because say second gear goes twice as fast as first, the engine would have to spin twice over a set distance is first, whereas in second it would only have to spin once. Therefore u have less resistance from the engine, so less momentum required to turn it over.

    • @ConquerDriving
      @ConquerDriving  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Second gear will make the engine spin at about half the speed of first gear.

    You're the guy with the white ND2 right? How easy is it to do this with that car? I tried doing it in 1st gear, but it's finicky. I've had an easier time doing this with older manuals with the exception of an 11th gen civic.

    does this work with old classics? I have a 1975 spitfire that seems to always drain the battery.

    • @ConquerDriving
      @ConquerDriving  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It should do but it's always hard to start them anyway so won't be as easy. A little bit of gas and pull the choke out. Sounds like it has a parasitic drain on the battery, a simple car like that should be fairly easy to diagnose with a multimeter. Or if the battery is over 4 years old then it most likely just needs a new battery. Battery should read minimum 12.5v DC with the engine switched off for a few hours. Ideally closer to 13v.
