  • Pop Your Clutch To Start The Car: also known as bump start if your battery is dead!
    If your battery is dead and you don’t have cables, did you know you can pop your clutch or bump start it? Now, it’s hard to predict the circumstances in which your battery dies. But knowing how to pop your clutch or bump starting your car is a good trick to know.

      Do you need to feather the gas while you pop the clutch or not so much?

    With push button ignitions, you can still pop the clutch? How? doesn't that require battery power which, as you have noted, is dead?

      The starter motor takes significantly more power than just turning the car on. If you try to start it too many times and completely kill the battery tho then you can’t do this

    Look into a slight audio correction with freeware like audacity. There are many tutorials for free to adjust levels, isolate and remove sounds, set thresholds to your liking.

    So when you push the car you making the alternator work so that’s trying too give the car battery some voltage kinda right? Because without the car starting you can’t make the alternator work so ik can feed the battery so pushing the car makes the alternator work and then you just start it in second gear ?

    • @YourHomeGarage
      @YourHomeGarage  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      When you start your car (under normal conditions) an electric starter motor is used to get the engine turning and start the self sustaining process.
      In this case, the electric starter motor cannot be used. So, you need to find a way get the crank shaft spinning. By rolling the car in neutral, you get the transmission spinning. When you then dump the clutch, the clutch pressure plate will connect to the spinning flywheel, which in turn gets the crankshaft of the engine to start spinning (the same effect the starter motor has) and the engine will start.
      As far as starting in 2nd or 3rd gear it has to do with mechanical advantage. 1st gear has the most mechanical advantage, meaning that in 1st gear one revolution of the engine produces the least number of revolutions on the tires. So it stands to reason that the opposite is true when trying to pop start a car. If you try it in first gear, the low gear ratio of 1st will translate into a slower spin of the crankshaft and may not be enough to get the motor to start. By selecting 2nd gear or 3rd gear, when the clutch engages it will spin the crankshaft faster and give you a better chance of spinning the crankshaft fast enough to start the engine.
      Hope that helps.

    Will this work on a battery that is completely drained (power locks, lights, etc. won't function)?
    Also, thanks! Very helpful! (And especially thanks for the kph to mph conversion)

    • @YourHomeGarage
      @YourHomeGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it should work - popping the clutch with a rolling start focuses on your engine’s compression to bypass the electrical starter and ignite the fuel in the pistons. If there is enough room and ideally a downhill slope - this is a great way to start a car during an emergency.

      @@jere.nurkka I’ve only tried it when I left my headlights on for a 10hr shift, when I tried to start the car regularly, it didn’t do anything not even a click. I think that’s about as dead as a battery will get, and it did start. I don’t know though, just my experience 🤷

      If you have enough volts to turn the lights on, but not enough to start the car - then you should be able to start it easily with this method.

    I've been told by some to let the clutch out slowly and others to let it out quickly. Is there a difference?

    • @YourHomeGarage
      @YourHomeGarage  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You need to transfer all the energy from the momentum of the car quickly through the drive train to turn the engine over - so pop it quickly.
