Note: Make sure you check the manufacture date of the battery. A lot of times batteries sit on the shelf and which decreases their age and you will need to replace the battery a lot sooner.

I’m gonna be starting van life soon so that means I need to educate myself on cars... your videos are soooo educational, I’ve learned so much from you already in just a week :)
Use petroleum jelly to coat ALL battery connections. This keeps the battery acid from forming on the posts and corroding the connections. If your ground connection to the engine is easy to get to, use the petroleum jelly there and on the fuse box connection if you can get to it. I have been doing this for almost 50 years, it is so cheap, and it WORKS! Why spend money on fancy chemicals that needs reapplications over time? Vaseline, or store brand petroleum jelly is exactly the same, and works better than spray can protestants. Smear the jelly liberally over the terminals and posts, install, and wipe the excess off.
This video is a Godsend. My friend was teaching me how to drive stick-shift. Next thing we know the car didn't turn on. I troubleshooted as instructed in this video, and realized that the clutch safety switch was not working properly. I just pressed on the clutch really hard, turned the key, and the car turned on. We're replacing the safety switch tomorrow. Thank you! You saved us hundreds of dollars in repairs... for free!
I know this video is old but I would like to say I was an hour away from my house and this was the first video I clicked out and I got my car working again, thanks Chris!!!
It's really cool to see how well your videos age. Even though you've come a long way production-wise, the information is still excellent and very easy to understand!
I've watched 8 other videos and yours is the only one who laid it out and made it simple and went through these steps and actually described things! Thank you!
My 1985 F250 6.9 IDI I just bought today that has been sitting since 1995 is making the wanting to start sound like in the beginning of the video. It have two 2007 batteries in my truck. I was told if I charge it up and put the batteries back in it should start. I knew the batteries were bad. I planned on replacing them right away. It started RIGHT UP! Now I have brakes and other stuff to do on the truck. So excited. Helpful video!
This really helped me out. My car was doing the same thing and you showed me some cool tips just to make sure it's the battery that's the problem and nothing else. Been binge watching all your vids, keep it up! Subscribed 👍🏽
It is a huge subject to tackle, looks like you did really good. Most drivers don't want to have knowledge of how every little thing on the car works. This is info everyone should have.
James Fenton Thanks James! Yea, there can be 1000000 things wrong. I figured I would just show everoyne my thought process and go though the steps for this particular situation.
I have owned my 01 ranger for 10 years now. Chrisfix has helped me with almost every maintenance repair on it. I love the fact that he teaches the technical dynamics of the most simple repairs and still makes the technical repairs seem easy.
When i went to bring my 95 ford taurus to the scrap 5yrs ago (due to a cracked chasis), i took out the battery from the engine bay a quarter mile before arriving and it ran the rest of the way just on the alternator xD
Travis Judd Thanks a lot Travis! Yea, they dont use that type of battery anymore. The new battery I got was from walmart. Hopefully it will last just as long!
Great video. However I think it misses the possibility of a flooded engine. Try turning on the ignition while flooring the accelerator. Sometimes this will get it started, especially on cold days.
My moms 01’ Grand Prix se wouldn’t start this morning. It would crank and soon, the starter wouldn’t even go. The problem was a phone charger that does not shut off with the car, and so I unplugged it. few hours pass by and we jump it with the f150. Turns on and it’s all good. It still takes a little more cranking to turn over but after a little bit of idling, she’s all good.
Hey Chris! One month update, new battery is in the car, alternator is all good. Emissions control is also fixed. She starts like a dream and everything from clogged windshield washer lines to air conditioning has been properly repaired. Now all that’s left is a “Service engine soon” light. I’m so happy with this car and it’s in its final stages of being a perfect, healthy, maintained vehicle for us! We are looking at a 2007 Cadillac Escalade with 173k miles and there are problems with the manifold bolts (common problem on these trucks) but when I check under the vehicle, I’m telling you this was the most clean anti-rust frame I’ve seen in a while. My dads 09’ suburban can’t say the same. I hope we get it, it’s only $11,500 with minor fixes to be done to it. And lastly, I want to thank you for all your help with car repair, care, and diagnostic videos. I apologize in advance if I shortened your time on anything, and I wish you the best of luck in future projects!
This is a very useful video. I had exactly the same problem and I followed all the steps as detailed by Chris and helped me identify and resolve the issue. Thanks much!!
If you think it's the battery, you should also check the fluid levels in the battery. Low fluid will prevent the battery holding charge. You can top them up with de-mineralised water and then charge them. This will fix them most times.
Hey chris, just wanted to let you know that since watching a few of your videos, you've inspired me to take more time and initiative for my own car when I get one. I am planning to buy my first car in the next few months and stumbled across your channel while researching manual cars and specs and I find your videos quite entertaining to watch, even if my interest in cars is minimal. My interest has been growing since watching your channel, though. Keep up the great work :)
Just a few KISS methods I've seen in my line of work. Check the battery cables to see if they are clean and tight. Have had a few occasions where that happens. Even had a woman whose husband used zip ties to hold the negative cable on. Also had an incident where a woman had her steering wheel locked. Simply turn the key and steering wheel at the same time. Lastly, I had a customer that hit something in the road and broke the bushing loose on her transmission shifter. Plenty more stuff but just some other things to consider.
At the time that your folks purchased that ford, there was a lot of press saying it was the safest minivan. That is the reason my wife and I purchased one.
Man this guy is a True about evrything Proof:- I was with my family on road trip for a marriage occasion. The road was not opened for some reason, I Just stopped my car on a patrol pump and went to wash room, when I came back and tried to start my car it wont start, luckily a mechanic's shop was nearby so I too my car There. I tried to jump start with a car and a battery but couldnt start as it was a honda civic 2014 and the car was small which tried to jumpstart. The mechanic took my battery and changed it. White he was charging this video came in my mind and i started watching it. After he put the battery back the car did start up but the time was reset and same happened in this video and then I changed the battery of it.
Sharing my experience with this same issue. Trying to start the car (Honda CR-V 2002 AT), all that happens is there is a single click sound coming from somewhere, and no cranking takes place. Tried multiple times, and the same just happens. I checked the terminal connections in the battery if they were loose; nope, they were nice and tight. Tried replacing the battery with a new one (since the old one had a history of being totally discharged a couple of months prior); the issue still persists. The problem all along was a blown fuse for the fuel pump. The fuse box was below the steering column. Good thing there were spare fuses with the correct ampere rating in the fuse box under the hood. Replacing the said fuse fixed my issue.
On a lot of older Fords with the shifter on the steering column - the bracket that holds the shifter cable (under dash) can get loose (2 torx bolts), & will have weird intermittent starts. Car will start in neutral but not always in park. Or, the neutral safety switch needs adjustment or replacing. Or so I’ve read. I sure hope that’s the case with my Crown Vic, because I’ve had the battery, belt, alternator & 2 starters replaced. I will try this tomorrow when I’m not still so sad. Mechanic does not want to chase electrical gremlins or grounds. Nor does he do exorcisms.
Seven years, dang. Mine lasted a decade (2011 model Actyon Sports, the only pickup truck made by South Korean car manufacturer) and it still manages to start the engine in -20C (negative four degrees in Fahrenheit or something after a week after last engine running). I already flushed break fluid, engine oils like 8 times, power steering fluid, differential oil (Koreans call it axle oil tho) and even blinker fluid (lmao) thanks to you. It's time to swap out the battery now.
I had a battery go bad but not in the way you think. Needed a jump start to get home and about midnight I checked the start again. Nothing and checked the terminals. The Negative terminal was corroded at the base of the battery housing. I was able to get it cranked and started. Took it to the local 24 hour Auto Zone and pretty much new battery was shot. Didn’t even try to load test. They had in stock but I didn’t want to risk shutting down in the A/Z parking lot and not starting again. I wound up replacing the battery with engine running secured the terminals and went back home. Had no issues after that.
You just help me fix my no started issue. It was battery acid on the positive terminal. I just forgot that could be a cause. It wasn’t even that bad but that was the issue. Thank you.
If you drive a manual you can also push tbe car and while it's moving you can try starting the car as because of the movement the battery usually gets a microscopical amount of energy which is in most cases enough then just let it run a little to charge up and you are free to go
hey chris, listen, i was told some time ago this, and now i took notice, so ot may be a good idea to share with you. so after you put the ignition key and turn on the battery, i was told to wait a litle for the fuel pump to load before starting the engine, another thing is when the engine starts,to let it get hot,and if possible never to start going rear with cold engine. If you would like you can make a video about litle thing like these and maybe debunk some myths. Good job man!
I know everyone has a opinion, but I prefer Fords over other manafactures, I have a Ford Focus C-Max 2005, quite a old battery but still as good as when it was new and I think its the original battery too
***** OMG yeah I love Ford Escort Mk5, I live in England and went up to skegness last week, We went to a banger cars race thingy and there was a Ford Escort that was dead but he kept on going, He broke down and he got going again, Escorts are a really lasting car
Happened to me a couple of weeks ago (what you experienced in the first thirty seconds of your video). Obviously, it was time to replace the battery (on a Tuesday). Come Thursday and the alternator went out, so I head to get that replaced on my 2003 Honda Civic EX Coupe. On Friday, the battery light began flickering on my dash panel after lunch, and over the weekend it was getting worse, so I likely had encountered a problem with the charging system. Took it back to the mechanic on Monday and it took them a couple of days to troubleshoot the problem. It ended up being a faulty alternator from O'Reilly's that had been installed the previous Thursday, so likely the voltage regulator was the faulty part within the alternator. Sometimes it pays to do research and consult with a mechanic to diagnose serious issues (thought it may just be something as simple as a faulty alternator). Need to change out my air filter and cabin air filter this week before I forget. Also learned how to jack up my daughter and will change her oil in 2k miles after watching ChrisFix's tutorial on that. :)
2 times my truck did not start. The radio, lights came one but still wouldnt start. Hooked up jumper cables, did not start. I TURN ON THE HEADLIGHTS AND IT STARTS. Truck is such a troll
I’m only 12 but this happened to my moms car, the battery died because the headlights were accidentally left on over night, then in the morning I went to start that car and It won’t start so I got my volt meter and measured to battery, it was only 10.4 volts so I got our jumper and jump started the car with my dad, your videos are helpful I appreciate it I am now a expert on jump starting even though I’m only 12.
This vid helped me help my brother start his chevy van he went out and rented the fuel pump tester when it was the batt .. well go from there now also were cleaning the throttle and sensors thanks for making this vid very helpful
Chris, you may want to put up a small warning about changing the battery. I managed to damage my ECU when changing mine. It meant I had to take the bus for two months whilst I figured out the issue.
@@jashan0417_ My battery died (lost a cell, went from 12V to 9V) after 16 years of faithful service. The new battery is now over 6 years old. My little car is over 22 years old. The only time it refused to start, was when said old battery died. One "no start" in more than 22 years... Amd counting.

If you drive a manual you can also push tbe car and while it's moving you can try starting the car as because of the movement the battery usually gets a microscopical amount of energy which is in most cases enough then just let it run a little to charge up and you are free to go
Chris Fix's your vidz
👀📹 are sooooo addicting!
I just did this yesterday
with my pop's,WEIRD!🤔

TO MY COMMENT!
👍😎
had this problem with my 07 Honda accord, replaced the battery no problem
hey chris, listen, i was told some time ago this, and now i took notice, so ot may be a good idea to share with you. so after you put the ignition key and turn on the battery, i was told to wait a litle for the fuel pump to load before starting the engine, another thing is when the engine starts,to let it get hot,and if possible never to start going rear with cold engine. If you would like you can make a video about litle thing like these and maybe debunk some myths. Good job man!
Thanks a lot! I actually made a video similar to that a while ago, check it out: th-cam.com/video/gkn-K2noClw/w-d-xo.html
Hey Chris just realized it’s February 2019, how’s the battery on the van?
Still starts it!
Glad to hear! Going to be replacing my battery and the terminals tomorrow. Wish me luck!
FOUND OFF ROAD DEAD aka ford
I only mistake is not watching one of your videos before I try to fix things on my own... Great video bro very helpful
Starter sounds like a saw cutting wood. Very clear video tho, once again, thanks Chris, I'm your most attentive student, good job!
Bro knew the problem just by looking at the clock
Truck is such a troll
shoebert31 hahaha, did you ever figure out why? That is bizarre!
ChrisFix
nope, only happened twice
ford f150
Hopefully it is nothing. But on the bright side, you can be like Biff in back to the future. Only you can start your car haha.
shoebert31 were your gauges working?
That is so cool. Thank you for the videos that you made.

Quentyn73 Glad the video was helpful!
+ChrisFix where did you get a Duracell battery from?
walmart

oh sorry
Man it's impossible nowadays to find a battery that can last for 7 years !!!
It's a miracle for me if it lasts 3 years ...
Abdullah Ibrahim I have one that's almost 5 years old and it's still cranking strong.
Abdullah Ibrahim well my sisters car is a 2006 Corolla and the battery has lasted ever since my grandma bought the car
I bought a Corolla 2001 surprisingly the battery is 9 year old works perfectly so far.
Plus there was a oil pressure warning light, which means something is seriously wrong.
What if my car studders when i crank it and now it doesnt want to start, its only a tic noise. What could it be?
Either starter needs to be tinkered with or replaced or your battery is shot
Loose cable
thanks a lot. my car did the same thing just now.
+solisium Good luck!
Same
I'm watching this video in a Best Buy parking lot waiting for my grandpa for a jump start
It’s funny to think that he probably should replace the battery again soon
I remember I thought my car was gonna blow up because I couldnt start the car and it sounded like a fat man gasping for air after coming up the stairs
This vid helped me help my brother start his chevy van he went out and rented the fuel pump tester when it was the batt .. well go from there now also were cleaning the throttle and sensors thanks for making this vid very helpful
Oh man! My battery is dead! (CLICK) I have an idea (Click) Here we go now! (BEEP) Hey guys ChrisFix here!

I wonder how many people thought that was a censor beep.
My new flip wouldnt start, so i came straight here. Thanks chris🙏😁
Pretty sure mines a dead battery and I need a new starter but I wanted to make sure. Thanks!
0:02 I'm to savage to have problems! Don't agree... then you played your self!
Thank God for TH-cam... At least I know I'm not on my own 😂
I am surprised that a walmart battery lasted that long!
it's the battery
Good call!
ChrisFix 😂😂
ChrisFix what happened to your ford battery
😘
Chris, you may want to put up a small warning about changing the battery. I managed to damage my ECU when changing mine. It meant I had to take the bus for two months whilst I figured out the issue.
1:53 the battery
Battery life 4 years on average??? Really??? How about 10 years? Anything less than 10 years is unacceptable.
It's a car battery not a inverter
@@jashan0417_ My battery died (lost a cell, went from 12V to 9V) after 16 years of faithful service. The new battery is now over 6 years old. My little car is over 22 years old. The only time it refused to start, was when said old battery died. One "no start" in more than 22 years... Amd counting.
@@jashan0417_ My car is 22+ years old. After 16 years of faithful service, the original battery was finally over it. The new battery is now 6 years old - and incredible strong. The only time my little car ever refused to start - was when the 16 year old battery lost it. Lost a battery cell, so it was now 9 volt.
Why are you talking about an inverter?
@@jashan0417_ So what?
It's amazing how far you've come good job!
Love you videos.
It's 2017 but I still watch video (repeat) ,😘
