ND Cabin Filter Installation

  • You can't always drive with the top down, but don't worry, our drop in filter from MLIT has you covered when you want to keep your air as fresh as possible with the roof up. In this video, join our Miata Master Mechanic, Kyle Tigar, as he shows you the step by step installation of our ND cabin filter.
MLIT ND Cabin Air Filter at Flyin Miata:
    www.flyinmiata...
A cabin air filter is a little silly for a convertible, right? No argument - when the top is down. When the top is up, you want to breathe the cleanest air possible. Here's how you do that. Straight out of Japan, this filter has two pieces - a mesh cover for the intake in the cowl to keep the big stuff out, and a filter specifically designed for fine particulate matter (PM 2.5). The main filter is electrostatically charged so it attracts fine dust and pollen, and it's also made out of an antibacterial material, so you don't have to worry about it developing an unpleasant odor. The installation is a bit more involved than most, but it's not terrible - check out the video to see what's involved.
Flyin' Miata is the world leader in Miata performance. We offer a wide range of parts for all years of the Mazda MX-5 Miata.

Sorry don't agree as you saw how big that opening under the cowl is & lots of junk can get in there causing the blower to work much slower or smell if something like water actually turns to mold on that inner screen. Not that hard to do either.

I am over the moon that you guys sourced and stocked this set. Bravo! On a lark, I emailed you guys having not been a Flyin' Miata customer a few months ago after I bought my ND about the lack of a particulate cabin filter. I never in a million years thought you would have stocked this part. Having forced air filtering really opens this car up to people who have intermittent outdoor allergies and sensitivities. Again, thank you, you've earned a customer for life.

You actually don't have to unplug anything to remove the old screen and put in the filter. There is enough room for the filter to slide all the way out and then toward the passenger door. Also the "door" for the filter only needs to be unhooked on the right side. Then it can be pushed to the left to unhook it from that side, similar to taking off a pair of glasses. I know this because I just did it yesterday.
The new filter works very well. Much better than the mouse poop laden screen that was in there before.

Very helpful video, install took a while since I was doing it outside in the dark but clearly it wasn't too hard since a beginner like me could pull it off.
Around 3:30 -- The cowling does actually come off completely. First, run the wipers and shut off the car while they're "up" on the windshield, to get them out of the way (still touching the glass, so not "popped"). Then, disconnect both the water lines -- there is another hose coupler near the "seam" which isn't disconnected in the video. Finally, at the "seam" where the passenger-side piece connects to the rest of the cowling, there's a kind of clip mechanism under the plastic. Just push the passenger-side cowling toward the back of the car and it will unlatch, then pull it away from the other cowling to separate them. Then, pull the entire piece towards the front of the car to slide it off the windshield glass.
I tried to vacuum all the leaves out before putting the top mesh screen on, but I couldn't get them all. So, when I took out the OEM mesh screen, a couple fell down into the blower fan. As soon as I turned it on post-install, I heard a loud humming sound with the fan on, plus a "tapping" noise whenever I turned the fan on or off. Probably a leaf getting flung into the vents and falling back down. I dropped the blower motor out (3 difficult screws in the footwell, but you can keep the dash on) and cleaned it, and now everything seems good.
Totally worth it for that clean clean air! This is a must for a daily driver unless it's warm year-round where you live.

Very handy when trying not to break things and cause a whole other issue. I followed your front sway bar replacement video step-by-step and the install went as smooth as possible.
It seems like installing a cabin filter would also be a good time to retrofit the ACP/Android Auto kit - halfway there in terms of dismantling. Has FM ever considered offering these kits?
