  • In this episode of Field Trips: West Coast, I'm back in La Jolla for a 2nd day kayak fishing with Kevin Nakada from Hobie. Since I knocked yellowtail off my bucket list last episode, we'll be targeting one of the most bizarre fish I've ever seen: California sheephead.
    Watch until the end for a preview at episode 3!

      Its the standard pose for pics that every fisherman knows. Hold fish close to the camera, in a manner to hide your arms. Then extend your arms and lean back a little, making your head look smaller (in the pic). Take it at an angle for maximum effect lol

    In 1972 when I was in the Navy, we would guard San Clement Island, and catch a ton of Sheepheads, and Catalina Blues, and reef sharks. The abalone drivers would trade us their lobster and abalone, for FRESH WATER and Bologna Sandwiches. Also come on board at night to watch movies. We caught HUGE garbage can(s) full of Sheepheads. Our Filipino cooks would take the extras home, we actually got tired of eating lobster and abalone. Who would'a thunk it.... LOL.

    Dude that was an amazing trip, I live in California also, sheepheads are yummy. Happy fishing our pacific Coast. We do have a great fishery here and it's all up and down our coast from San Diego to to San Francisco Bay and more. Right now our yellow tail tuna are going off, but I know you are well aware of that, seeing your video of the day before. I've been following your channel for some time now. You are a true sportsman and I enjoy watching you fish, wherever you are. Enjoy California, we are the greatest state in the world.

      +Curtis Burgett yeah dude, this coast is SO wildly different than the gulf or east coasts (makes sense, different ocean) so it's been a blast exploring it because it's all totally new to me. I'll be heading all the way to Seattle during the season, so there will be a little bit of everything. My mom lives in Irvine, CA and she co-stars on tomorrow's VLOG as I cook this sheephead up

    The best tasting Sheepheads are under 12 to 15 pounds. Steam them, then flake their meat with cooked Lobster meat, then refrigerate for about 4 hours. You can use a 3 or 4 to one ratio of Fish to Lobster, and hardly anyone can tell the difference in taste...! Everything tastes like Lobster!
    (You're fishing in "My Neck of the Woods", now! 30 years of fishing around there!). Haha!

    Black sea bass and some groupers are hermphrodites. They change genders based on pheromones(I think) and or abundance of certain genders. Also sheepshead remind me of tautog than hogfish.

    • @YakFishField
      @YakFishField  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, like I said in the video, I've heard of other fish that do it. I believe hogfish actually change too. And yeah, the males look a lot like tautogs, I actually said that to Kevin off camera. The females looked more like hogfish to me with how their mouths flared out and hinged way open. But the males definitely look like a weirdly-colored tautog.

      They are both members of the wrasse family, along with the florida hogfish you refered to.
      So yes they are related.
      There are several wrasses that can be caughg on hook and line in hawaii as well,
      But they top out at around 7 pounds or so.
