    Kathleen, I've lived next to an elderly couple for 16 years, and the lady of that household is one of the biggest gamers i have ever seen. She is 80 years old today, but she is so happy to play more games, especially games like Valorant and Warframe.
    She even called me one day at work to try and get my father into games when he was feeling down about an injury preventing him from working. I was all too happy to help my dad get into games and hopefully help him feel better.
    My point is, it's never too late to get into games, and the gaming world always enjoys dragging new people in. Many of us love seeing the sight of the generation, known for deriding gaming, instead get theri hands into it and play for the fun of it. Not to say you ever said the same about gaming, it's just a generalization people make.
    I hope you try out gaming one day, we'll always be here ready to hekp you find a way into it. Theres many avenues for getting into games after all.

    I do love 8-bit and 16-bit music, but I wouldn't want that to be the only way video game music sounds. Rather than a limitation caused by circumstances, chiptune is now simply another tool in the box, and not a separate genre. However, that limitation based on the circumstances and environment in which it formed would make it a _tradition_ , much in the way other traditional music or traditional cuisine is informed by geographical availability. It's a part of the history of the culture of video games, and that, at the very least, makes it significant.
    Secondly: Yay, you showed Kathy the FF6 Opera! I really liked her commentary on it, I had a feeling it would seem quaint or something in that vein. Also, I laughed when you were like "hold on let me get the original" but ended up using the Game Boy Advance one, with the weaker sound quality than the SNES (not a criticism, these things happen! and it still gets the point across)

There are those who will take that freedom from us, and too many of you gladly give it. But it is our ability to choose - whatever you think is true - that makes us human... Home from the Undertale OST is one of the best examples of how music and videogames can complement each other.
    The song by itself sounds good, and the phrase "despite everything, it's still you" is a bit emotional by itself, but it's the fact that the phrase shows up at the end of the game when you're back in Toriel's house, where you first started your journey through the underworld, that brings it all together.
    It's the game itself that makes both the phrase and the music hit so hard, even years after you've last played it.
    The fact that it manages to intertwine the music, the writing, the characters, and the gameplay so well makes Undertale one of the best story-oriented games of all time.

    Undertale is such a good track. Starts almost with a single instrument, single phrase. You're alone on your journey. There is a sense of movement though, progression, the phrase moves you on. And as you progress you add a new instrument, a new sound, a new *something* as you keep moving. All your friends adding something new, adding to the music, adding their individuality to your journey in a big mx with lots of different sounds all working together. Until, finally, at the end...it cuts back again, just the simple almost solo instrument. Repeating the same phrase as at the start. But it's ever so slighly different, warmer in tone, less of a cold sorrowful note and instead it's your character carrying everything they experienced with them to the end. You've grown, you've changed...but it's still you.

    One of the biggest reason some were people against Yunjin is because there was a leak circulating in the Genshin community before her release saying how she might not have an English voice at all because Hoyo wants to preserve her traditional Chinese singing.
    Another thing was on the livestream, she was introduced with her opera voice which caught everyone off guard and some people just found it funny because it was a very foreign sound which came without warning.
    Most players did seem to enjoy her singing within the cutscene itself though.

    • @raulmaltrain6893
      @raulmaltrain6893 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      yeah. yun jin 's singing sounds weird if not in context,
      just like a western opera like papageno would sound if an NPC suddenly spoke to you in falsetto, or if a playable character started singing like the bee gees.
      yun jin is pretty nasal when singing, which is how the technique is. so i understand people laughing at it XD.
      no one critiques the actual song she is in tho.

    • @etheriousjackal5577
      @etheriousjackal5577 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@raulmaltrain6893 I was watching the livestream with a group of friends at the time and we all went "wtf" when she was introduced because we'd never heard anything like that before.
      I do admit that we were surprised and laughing at the time but it wasn't out of lack of respect. We enjoyed the singing a lot more as Yun Jin's character was introduced in the upcoming Archon quest and the story built towards the opera.

    • @esheep8697
      @esheep8697 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I 100% laughed because no one randomly sings 1 word in opera and takes it seriously. her story cutscene was beautiful but it was obviously meant to be an opera. her one word performance was a joke that hoyo shouldn't have put in her trailer.

    On the comments about Divine Damsel of Devastation, it took me back to my high school choir days. We were at a state level choir festival, and one of our pieces was a Mongolian piece that we were doing in-style, very nasal/forward vocal focus, VERY different from classical western singing. We had two other pieces that showed off our other skills, but that one we worked SO HARD on, only to have one of the judges mark us down just because he didn't like the technique we used, despite it being the proper technique and style for that type of music.
    So yeah, while the particular tone and voice of that piece I get how it can rub people the wrong way, a little knowledge goes a long way when you start realizing just how much history and culture there is behind that particular technique, and it isn't some babyish or unrefined technique just because it isn't what we're used to hearing.

    That opera moment in Final Fantasy 6, back in the 90s, made me start a healthy interest in classical music, took me to learn an instrument and be part of an orchestra. I do not live off of music, but it is a big part of my life that I owe to this game and to Nobuo Uematsu. The waterworks are real too. My sister is a lyrical trained mezzo soprano and sang this for my 40th b-day.

    I’m so glad you included The Divine Damsel of Devastation. The song is so much more than just a cultural piece cause the art of Peking opera is dying. I used to hear these public opera performances every once in a while in the country I live in and they all seemingly vanished in an instant one day and I just never noticed. Hearing the song reminded me of my childhood and I’m so happy that the world got to experience a piece of that through this song.

    1:30:29 i heard somewhere that that's exactly what the composers wanted to pass trough the chaos language, something that no one needs to understand to get emotional. This and that since this songs play on the background, you really don't pay much attention to the lyrics since you are fighting a giant robot with a dress haha but even so, they wanted to have vocals. And the few songs that have understandable vocals on the nier/drakengard franchise are those that only play when you are meant to focus on the song. The ending credits song for automata even has 5 languages i think, english, japanese, french, chaos and a native language that i can't remember the name right now.

    Baba Yetu for me is like the ultimate celebration of humanity and all that is good about us. It makes me think about how our individuality makes us interesting and special, but through our commonality we can be empathetic, and strive for progress and betterment for all of our species. It's just a shame that the people with the most power often don't have those ambitions, and our future can often feel much bleaker. When I feel like that though, Baba Yetu always inspires me and gives me hope that goodness will triumph.

    I think one of the reasons the Undertale title song hits so much harder when you've played the game is that it is really a culmination of two of the most important motifs in the game, so knowing the context of those motifs and what they've come to mean in the game up to that point just really adds that extra-powerful hit of emotion that you don't get otherwise.

    A bunch of these actually do have live orchestral performances on youtube, im from ireland and i went to see the ulster ochestra perform anime and video game music recently it was incredible. But theres a lot of offical performances too, even from the sweedish orchestra and london philharmonic, could be a good way to repeat songs in the future to new guests. I also feel like video games are almost an extension or modern interpretation of opera at times. In a similar way that modern metal has blues and jazz as its origins and blues and jazz have their origins in european classical music and african music. video games can often have storylines and themes that arent quite exact replicas of opera but they borrow some elements.

    The opera scene from FF6!!!! *heart melts* That was such a huge moment in gaming for me. I was 14, I was into art and comics and animation and RPGs, and basically at my height of absorbing popular media. And the scene itself was brilliant on so many levels. There was the anxiety of having to remember your lines, the beautiful music, the subtext of Celes's bourgeoning romance with Locke, and the absolutely cartoonish villainy of Ultros. So, so good.

    Some songs I would suggest:
    Nier Automata: Weight of the World
    Ori and the blind forest: Light of Nibel or Fleeing Kuro (cant decide)
    And something quiet different (since its not a game), but in my humble opinion interessting:
    Mother Sea from One Piece.
    Keep up the awesome work Marco. I found your channel and even though I am not making music myself I enjoy the discussions and interessting points you make in your videos. Thank you so much =) And yes, the Lets Plays are also good. But I personally am enjoying the "music" videos more
    PS: What I loved about the "Despite everything, it is still you"-Moment was, that it hit me absolutely in the moment I was so immersed in the game. And at that exact moment, where you are just on the brink of "getting lost for that session" (in a good way) and diving right into it, it snapped you out of that state. And you started to think. With the music, with everything and in more than one way your own reflection staring at yourself and making you think. And yes, I with the music I also cried.
