Gehrman's fight is essentially two people trying to free the other from an endless nightmare, with Gehrman having suffered it for much, much longer than you have and pleading for you to let him continue this burden for the part he played in its creation, while setting you free in the process. But with the signs we get across the game of just how much he has suffered, it's our want to free him too. And in your "victory" you take his place as caretaker of the Hunters "dream", unless you've obtained the power needed to overcome the being that beholds the dream itself.
There's more to the tragedy than that - the underlying message of Bloodborne is that the Great Ones weren't what created the horror, it was *humanity itself*, forcibly seizing and exploiting the Great Ones' gifts until humans became monstrous with their own blood-gorging greed. Gehrman, in his wish for the Dream, was perpetuating his own sins and passing them to others. The only salvation comes from ending Mergo's troubled, exploited dream-life, ending Gehrman's dream, and becoming one of the Great One's true children to break the cycle. The humans of Yharnam, and the Hunters in particular, are so violently twisted into a knot by their own crimes, that undoing that knot in itself is the sublime, crushing suffering of having to face human wrongdoing.
I want to believe that Bach would be joyously overwhelmed by the enormous diversity of modern music. Video games are still not generally accepted as art, so it makes sense that the music is not also widely respected. Hilary is so wonderful and fun, I hope she gets to be on the show more often.
Considering that the truth behind,at least in media that isn't music,the so called classics of the artworld has been revealed,video games are definitely better then any artwork,more so the ones from the 20th century.
Re: "Ultrakill/Keygen Church" This particular piece stems from the mind of one individual who goes by "Keygen Church" in this case, but usually "Master Boot Record". I cannot understate his genius...there is SO MUCH to his music. In addition he puts out genuine cryptography puzzles with each album release, culminating in a bonus track upon solution. So, this is just important for me to say...this is a separate composer, and the music has, in its core, nothing to do with the game.
I wish more people gave his other stuff more time. I'm forever spamming reactors for TSR to listen to others, usually Asgretalos because it goes so damn hard on classical badass style.
Some of the people you do this series with are in analysis mode, some are clearly taking mental notes or getting excitement out of loving each moment, but watching Hilary listen to Gehrman the First Hunter you can really see her feel it, it's beautiful

Even though the song appeared in the beginning of the game, the context of that scene is indeed a preparation for the final battle, where the cast (or some of them) already knows the plot twist which would befall the main character Tidus if they succeed in defeating Sin. This plot point goes in line with Hilary's observation that "it's calm, but not without issues", because the song in my view also depicts bittersweet memories and the struggle of letting go and be content about the situation.

I think the reason that Nintendo have - as you put it - an almost monopoly on happiness in game music is that happiness (and joy) is an emotion that play naturally lends itself to, but which tends to be undervalued in the sort of 'serious' art that AAA video games tend to try and capture. Not much room for happiness when you're trying to tell a story about cycles of violence, war, or of overcoming your anger management issues following your wife's death all while trying to form a bond with your son. Those aren't the sort of stories that really focus down on happiness. Meanwhile, Nintendo still have a fair few of their franchises focusing on play above and beyond anything else, with whatever narrative is present being there to justify the play rather than being the point of the game. I think there's a bunch of indies who also do a good job of happiness - Pretty much everything on the Super Lucky's Tale soundtrack for example - but I'm struggling to think of much from the AAA sector. Maybe Vivi's Theme/Alexandria Theme in FFIX? Likely some of Little Big Planet but that entire franchise feels like a relic from before Sony fully committed to their open worlds and linear cinematic games. Snowdin Town and Dating Start! themes in Undertale, I'd say also do happiness pretty well. (Though when they're not pursuing happiness and video games as play and nothing else, Nintendo are also very good at distilling anxiety and panic into their music. The Guardian battle music from Breath of the Wild, the Gloom Hands battle music from Tears of the Kingdom, even - in a more playful way - Frothy Waters in Splatoon 3. Also Ultra Space: Ruin from Pokémon Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon but that straight-up cheats and plays a town theme from elsewhere in the game backwards and with added static. Still. I never did finish the game but I keep meaning to go back and do so(and it's getting harder and harder, what with the game never getting re-released for consoles after its initial 360/PS3 release)
All the main Suikoden games are in the same world. The stories are generally about political conflict in different regions of that world, but the world is connected. Its cool because a recurring character can go from hero to villain or vice versa just by virtue of pov and nationality.
I remember when I played FFX for the first time back then in 2001, To Zanarkand was playing in my mind for months, even in my dreams. I really miss Uematsu compositions on last FF games, they're simply not the same without him.

30:08 this reminds me of all the crossovers I saw in show growing up when characters from shows that just feel like they shouldn't work join each other for an episode or 2 like this feels like the episode ending number on some crossover between a show about a rock band and a show about some sort of idol group or something and after they finally managed to put aside their differences they worked together to save the event or whatever and now this is them performing together because they are friends now

Damn, I don't play fighting games and have never touched a GG but its music and character design is so f***ing amazing. Regarding FFX, in that moment iirc they also know that Yuna is going there to die (or maybe Tidus to disappear, or both, can't remember). So there's also that sadness in it.
To provide context about the piece "Gehrman, The First Hunter" from Bloodborne in as spoiler-free way as possible: Gehrman is a tragic character who is trapped in, essentially, endless torment. He was once a lost, heartbroken and discarded man who, in a misguided attempt to do good, brought about a nightmarish cycle of misery and grief to many - most of all himself. He is an ally and guide to the protagonist throughout the game and upon your sort-of victory (it's complicated) wishes to save you by freeing you from this cycle. This means killing you, only in this instance, it really means awakening you from a nightmare (we're talking dark and eldritch planes of existence, think Inception only more Lovecraftian). However, you are given the choice to either accept his mercy, or else bring mercy upon him yourself - freeing him, taking his place, and sacrificing your own self. Naturally he resists you, and you must defeat him in an incredible boss battle in which this theme plays. It's an epic duel between two tormented souls fighting to save the other from a ceaseless nightmare. It's tragic, twisted and absolutely beautiful. (And yes, this is the spoiler free version, this is a game with several endings, and this is the only context needed to appreciate this track)
I really don't understand why you'd pick Super Gore Nest. There's so many compositions from Micks Doom soundscape that are much better, and you know it. Well done on some of the other picks though, but SGN was just a weird and irrational pick in my opinion. She did pick up the NIN vibe though, which I really commend. NIN made the music for the original Quake 1, where it all began essentially (yes yes yes I know what you're all thinking if you know the history - believe me, I know it all, I lived through it).
Gehrman is the keeper of the dream, he made an awful mistake (something horrible) after which he has been forever trapped in the Hunter's Dream, to bee feed upom by a greater being (Flora, the Red Moon), withouth chance of escaping, but with the "small" power he has, in the end, when you refuse to submit to his mercy (he is litterally proposing the only truthfully good deed in the while game, killing you and freeing you fron the dream and from the horrible memories of the hunt... and from the sight of said Great being) he will fight you to try and impose that mercy, and it is sad because you know he is hostile because if you defeat him (without doing some... lets call them side steps) he knows you're just gonna take his place and its a fate he cannot bear to inflict on anyone else, he is willing to endure it till the end, of times probably
FF14 has some really good character driven emotional music that is totally worth listening to. But what Im the most surprised about is how is there no Nier song in this reaction. Like one of the most unique soundtrack ever with so many things to unpack at once. Winning so many awards for music and all deserved. Its peak game music.
Pokke Village always gets me so emotionnal because I used to love playing Monster Hunter on my PSP when I was a kid. It brings me back to simpler times when the worst things I had to worry about were homeworks lol
Btw, dont know if you ever had, but someone should listen N Theme or N Castle from Pokemon Balck and White, the latter is my favourite theme in all of Pokemon, and they do make great ones even in bad games

I thought the breadth of titles and genres was a little limited for me but we love what we love I suppose but many of them were operatic of grand in nature which suited the listener. Some great stuff here.

The Suikoden series all takes place in the same world, but aside from a few callbacks and recurring characters, each game stands as its own self-contained story. Much as I like the intro to _Suikoden III,_ the second game is my absolute favorite in the series, and has the best soundtrack and intro, IMO.

Regarding FFX, in that moment iirc they also know that Yuna is going there to die (or maybe Tidus to disappear, or both, can't remember). So there's also that sadness in it.
To provide context about the piece "Gehrman, The First Hunter" from Bloodborne in as spoiler-free way as possible:
Gehrman is a tragic character who is trapped in, essentially, endless torment. He was once a lost, heartbroken and discarded man who, in a misguided attempt to do good, brought about a nightmarish cycle of misery and grief to many - most of all himself.
He is an ally and guide to the protagonist throughout the game and upon your sort-of victory (it's complicated) wishes to save you by freeing you from this cycle. This means killing you, only in this instance, it really means awakening you from a nightmare (we're talking dark and eldritch planes of existence, think Inception only more Lovecraftian).
However, you are given the choice to either accept his mercy, or else bring mercy upon him yourself - freeing him, taking his place, and sacrificing your own self. Naturally he resists you, and you must defeat him in an incredible boss battle in which this theme plays. It's an epic duel between two tormented souls fighting to save the other from a ceaseless nightmare. It's tragic, twisted and absolutely beautiful.
(And yes, this is the spoiler free version, this is a game with several endings, and this is the only context needed to appreciate this track)

I really don't understand why you'd pick Super Gore Nest. There's so many compositions from Micks Doom soundscape that are much better, and you know it. Well done on some of the other picks though, but SGN was just a weird and irrational pick in my opinion. She did pick up the NIN vibe though, which I really commend. NIN made the music for the original Quake 1, where it all began essentially (yes yes yes I know what you're all thinking if you know the history - believe me, I know it all, I lived through it).
Gehrman is the keeper of the dream, he made an awful mistake (something horrible) after which he has been forever trapped in the Hunter's Dream, to bee feed upom by a greater being (Flora, the Red Moon), withouth chance of escaping, but with the "small" power he has, in the end, when you refuse to submit to his mercy (he is litterally proposing the only truthfully good deed in the while game, killing you and freeing you fron the dream and from the horrible memories of the hunt... and from the sight of said Great being) he will fight you to try and impose that mercy, and it is sad because you know he is hostile because if you defeat him (without doing some... lets call them side steps) he knows you're just gonna take his place and its a fate he cannot bear to inflict on anyone else, he is willing to endure it till the end, of times probably

FF14 has some really good character driven emotional music that is totally worth listening to. But what Im the most surprised about is how is there no Nier song in this reaction. Like one of the most unique soundtrack ever with so many things to unpack at once. Winning so many awards for music and all deserved. Its peak game music.

The Suikoden series all takes place in the same world, but aside from a few callbacks and recurring characters, each game stands as its own self-contained story. Much as I like the intro to _Suikoden III,_ the second game is my absolute favorite in the series, and has the best soundtrack and intro, IMO.
