  • Terry Wogan had a special edition of his show, Wogan, broadcast on BBC1 in 1987, where they celebrated Radio 1's 20th birthday. Two of his guests were John Peel and Tony Blackburn !! The show also goes behind the scenes of Radio 1 with Mike Smith, Bruno Brookes and Janice Long !!

I'm old enough to remember when Bruno did a show where all the music was on compact disk and the first song was 'Owner of a Lonely Hear't by Yes.

Ah, I remember when a CD was a thing of wonder. Now the landfills are full of them. I guess the moment that music became digital, and data storage capacities on hard drive and flash memory began to at least double each year (between 1995 and 2007 essentially) the rest was inevitable. Great to see all this old studio gear though! Always notable in those old videos of Radio 1 and 2 how they try not to show that they played a lot of tracks from carts of mini-discs. In those days I think the BBC was expected to show itself as an anti music-copying anti-piracy exemplar. All radio stations did that then though. I remember working at Capital for a week on some IT things (1980s) and was often overlooking the studio - seldom saw a record played.

NAD cd players....lol. Top gear to this day. No flashy buttons to ruin the sound... just pure. Like the Amps, with on/off, volume and balance. :)

It must have been shortly after this programme that Radio One sacked Janice Long for being unmarried and pregnant.

When she was due to return from maternity leave in early 88, they offered her a weekend slot instead of her previous weekday one. She told them where to go. And of course, much more recently, Radio 2 also gave her the boot as well, poor woman. She was a great DJ with eclectic music tastes. A very much missed lady.

She had already been told to cover her "bump" which was deemed as unsightly for TV viewers, hence she has to stand up behind a piece of equipment for the duration of this.
