It looked like Philip was self-operating the desk, so what was the man wearing glasses doing behind that massive control desk? Was he like the producer?

Even by 1990, BBC Radio 1 was still not on air 24 hours a day. A new decade, and the station was still not airing 24 hours. That would not happen until May the following year of 1991.

Showing your age? 😅 Yeah most radio stations if not all wasn't airing 24 hours till after 1991. Even the Radio station that Orson Welles done his Alien prank on wasn't airing 24 hours.

@@AJ.429 Independent Local Radio had been airing 24 hours a day since it launched in 1973. Come 1980 all ILR stations were on air 24 hours a day, a decade before Radio 1 did.

@@johnking5174 From my knowledge and information I believe Most stations signed off at 11 pm or midnight. There were stations in big cities that did stay on 24 hours. The switch started in the 1970s and 1980s
Just because a station was licensed for 24 hour operation didn’t mean it had to stay on the air for the whole 24 hours. In the 40’s-70’s many radio and TV stations went off the air at night because advertisers that desired late night spots were few
TV stations also use to sign off and usually play "God save the Queen" at the end of the broadcast. It was known as a Radio Broadcast because even TV stations usually used Radio Waves. I'm 32 and remember the Famous British Close down of the 90s with the Rag Doll that was situated on BBC one and the ITV Night screen and BBC Ceefax pages on BBC Two.

@@johnking5174 Life was so much easier back then, it must have sounded so great to people when Radio started doing 24 hours. "We're going all through the night" (in a 50s-70s accent) little did they realise all the BS that was pushed down there throat by companies and TV Manufacturers. It's got worse since 2005 and definitely since 2008. Now we have BBC news, state run broadcaster who shows a one sided narrative like RT Today. RT was seen as propoganda just because it didn't meet the views of the west but in my understanding if there is no room for opinion and only facts based on biased politics, then it's just as much propoganda.
BBC news was also very boring, Repetitive and Unnecessary. Then the License Fee went up because it was operating longer as well as the Cost of living went up. When the internet came about, it was the only way to beat TV and Radio Propoganda... But sadly that got taken over too quite fast and not just from TV&Radio but Internet Trolls and Multinational companies. Sites now usually are inaccessible unless you register or subscribe to them and everything now is commercially viable. Subscriptions are usually monthly and increase yearly with COL.
Onlyfans is definitely going to be one of the worse. The only thing to save TV and Online was Streaming platforms like "Netflix" Unfortunately it went "Woke" and removed anything good and the only thing on there now even slightly watchable is a new horror movie that might have made a netflix exclusive. It's worth one watch 😭 then largo forgotten about. So sadly we are even controlled to have our own channels like here at YT.
All the Space Docs (even Mainstream) are sadly unavailable, and that goes with anything else educational that does not involve politics or TV shows like "Toff - Underneath my skin" marketed as docs when they're boring political news investigations like "Panorama"
In the UK, we have"Talking pictures" "Talk TV" and "GB News" the only three controversial channels for the people and all of them have been attacked and altered. TP was a Channel who showed B&W films and Archives footage from the "The Footage Detectives" however an angry viewer tried to get the station closed down because they saw something offensive on it. Now by court order they have to put a disclaimer before all there shows to indicate "Old programs may offend" They now are selectively careful in what they show so the brilliant world of "Charley Bowers" "Jan Svankmajer" and "Harry Langdon" may never be shown. Anything too risky. 🤷🏼‍♂️ Ironically I've saw L&H on there.
Talk TV is under the control of Rupert Murdoch, Nuff Said and GB News is just a fake optional choice I call opposame. Anything truly controversial wouldn't see the light of day. Ask yourself why is Matt Mcgreevy Face being covered up on an uncensored show on piers Morgan despite its widely available online. Why help cover up Phillip Schofield Pedophile type behaviour? Why have the audacity to say ITV is covering up when they doing it themselves? Even Google is sharing the image. 🤷🏼‍♂️ Why have the mug Ian Collins do a Show called "Worried the cover up is being covered up" 🤷🏼‍♂️ yeah mate because you helping to cover it up also. 🤦🏼‍♂️

@@AJ.429 That is not correct - many ILR stations in the 70s stayed on air for a lot longer. Some concluded at 2am, but were back up and running at 6am. However ILR was designed to be 24 hours, to capture listeners not served better by the BBC. Maybe you are confusing the broadcasting hours of BBC local stations, who never aired 24 hours back then.

1:12 - Now this was the massive problem affecting Radio 1 come 1990, these dinosaur DJs such as Alan Freeman were still on air on Radio 1. In 1990 he was 63 years old, well over 30 - 40 years outside the key demographic age for Radio 1 listeners. The old guard refused to budge. In 1993 that would all change under Matthew Bannister's time as controller.
