Grew up in Brighton and I was 17 in 1970. It was the greatest place in the country to experience all kinds of fun. Whether it was hiking on the Downs, or dancing and chatting up the birds at the Top Rank Suite on Saturdays, or a visit to the Royal Pavilion, or either Pier. You could swim, fish, sunbathe, drink yourself stupid, chat up more birds, and never ever be bored. I was a very lucky guy. I finally outgrew Brighton by the time I was 32 and still single, and I had the opportunity to move to Northern California, Santa Cruz actually, the California version of Brighton, a Victorian holiday town. Ive never looked back, Ive loved every minute of my life in CA and I have a thousand fond memories of Brighton. I still have lots of rellies there so I keep in touch. Its great that Brighton is as popular as ever, but sadly not as clean and well maintained as the Brighton in this wonderful video. Thanks very much for posting, great music choices. Once a Mod always a Mod! Up the Albion!! 💙
@@alanogilvie4504 I too was 17 in 1970 but have not left my country. Instead I live in an even more earthy British seaside town - Southend-on-Sea in Essex! Even more tarty than effete Brighton!
Brighton at its best in the 70's . Clean , vibrant and exciting . Nothing like the rundown , neglected and dirty place it is in 2024 . A mere shell of it's former glory and a place l rarely visit as it is too sad and depressing seeing it is now and remembering how it was in the is past and in it's prime .
I totally agree, it has become such a sad rundown place, I left last year, and when I do become homesick it is to the long gone past when it was clean friendly and vibrant.
I was a student at Brighton Polytechnic 1976 to 1977. This brings back memories of those days, but watching this video, it looks like another world, from a dream to me now. 😢
Amazing in nearly ten years nobody has commented on this video. It must have been made either between January to June 1970, or February 1974 to March 1976 as Harold Wilson is there, and that was the times in the 70s when he was in power. Interesting time capsule. I wonder how many of those mall businesses in the Lnes survive in 2024?
This is gold dust. I’ve lived in Brighton for decades. If I’m not mistaken, it wasn’t too long after this film was made that someone hit upon the idea of turning central Brighton into a soul-sucking piss hole. In the North Laine you can buy photos of the burnt out ruins of the West Pier, as if that was one of our achievements in the last 20 years!
Slightly more refined back then I would say. Very clean and tidy no homeless sleeping rough in the parks, no drugs or junkies or drunk people wandering the streets .
Obvious you were'nt around then . Brighton was vibrant and exciting with so much going on . A real bohemian vibe with concerts , live gigs , great pubs , theatre , events , shops etc and everything for all tastes . A great place if you were a teenager or in your twenties as l was then . Nothing like the run down shell of it's former self as it is now .

@RobertSweet-nw4tm Ahhh, good ole Soufend, the armpit of Essex. If you're calling Brighton effete, you must've gone to the wrong clubs, mate! 😀
@ effete when compared to Essex and East London clubs!
I see the description “Victorian” frequently in the USA. But Queen Victoria was never on the throne of that country.
@@RobertSweet-nw4tm Its generally used when describing architectural design, especially houses of the Victorian era. She left her mark everywhere!

The Marina was built from 1974-76, so you're spot on there @algiles881
drove to Brighton 1980s, couldn't find no where to park went on to Eastbourne, never went back,

My home town which I love. A x
In the seventies it didn’t need a mortgage to park a car……now it does so people dont hang around or even go to the place any more…
Mary reminds me of Margaret lol
Better with less cars
Drive away cars and you drive away people and their money.
Lot better now than in the 1970 looks boring
