I am a São Paulo fan myself and I really enjoyed this video.Congrats! Other major accomplishments from Rogerio Ceni are the 3 Brazilian Championship in a row(2006/07/08), no other team was able to do the same until today. Another thing was his ability to play as a extra defender thanks to his skill with his feet, he used to play really long and insane balls for the strikers and used to play really advanced, like Neuer does today. On top of all that he was a true leader, he played 980 games as the captain of Sao Paulo squad, I believe that is another record. In addition to that as a true São Paulo fan("São Paulino") I can say that he excel in represent the fans, in the interviews, with the media, he was an iconic symbol that always said the correct words that represented what the fans were feeling and thinking. A trully Legend, the Myth!!

@@Aryaninho-innit our goalie depth in those days was nothing short of astounding between Dida, Julio Cesar, Marcos…Ceni is a great goalie but he was basically a 2nd/3rd string talent at the national level.
The myth! If he had played in any european league and did a third of what he did he would have been considered the goat. In 2007 brazilian national league São Paulo conceded 19 goals in 38 matches so he was pretty solid at his goalkeeping role and he scored 7. Also the save at 10:20 was amazing, legend says Gerrard still cries when he thinks about it.
Rogério also had a couple of very funny encounters with the media. The most famous one happened in 2006, where a journalist said on live TV that Rogério didn't get criticized for his mistakes, and accused him of faking a signature from Arsenal for his own benefit. Upon hearing of it, Rogério called the network to confront the journalist in a very awkward manner. Also, one of the best color commentators in Brazil had a leaked audio saying "Rogério Ceni is annoying as fuck" (Rogério Ceni é chato pra caralho), also on live TV.

I love that the internet and the football TH-camrs are suddenly in love with Rogerio Ceni. On of the greatest to ever do it. I was buying him in my teams back in 03/04, when it still wasn't even called Football Manager. The man is a legend, my father went to Brasil for work, and asked where he could buy a Dida shirt for his goalkeeper son. Taxi driver took him to the San Paulo store and told him "No Dida, only Rogerio Ceni here". Keep it up Zealand!
And he holds the record for defend most penalties in history with 51, it´s hard to find that because everyone just put handanovic at first, but he defended just 38. Sometimes they forget others continents.
That's my GK! Never gonna forget when I started playing FM he scored a goal for me and he was coming back really slow, the other team started the match and they kicked from the middle of the field and they score a goal while Rogerio was coming back haha
Happened in real life. São Paulo once had a game against Fluminense where Roger Flores scored from the midfield whilst Ceni was coming back. Game was a 5x4 gol fest. One of the most bizarre matches I ever watched.
I got my first taste of the Brasileiro in 2007 watching from the Seychelles Islands🇸🇨. Ceni was already a legend at Sao Paulo, also during that time a 15 year old was making headlines at Santos.😉 I still can't believe that I was the only person from my country to even know about Neymar before he became a household name worldwide.
Curiosities about Ceni: he is the player with the most appearances for a club (1237 appearances). He is the goalkeeper with the most official penalty saves (51 saves). He has the record for most appearances as captain for the same team. Ceni already played the role that Neuer did with his feet in the late 90s and early 2000s.
Brazilian here Some things can only happen in Brazil. Imagine being one of the best goalkeepers of your generation, AND on top of that being the best free kick taker in the league AND also being a model citizen with incredible work ethic. Would you believe if I told you he's a pretty good manager too? Absolutely nuts.
@@souravroy9192 Come on man. Not everyone who says something about Messi that is not praise, is automatically a Ronaldo fanboy. I suggest that you leave your computer for today and go outside to meet some real people and maybe touch some grass
I'm a São Paulo fan and this is possible the best and detailed foreign video about our eternal captain. Thanks for your research and work spreading the word about one of the best. Just two things: the International Cup against FC Barcelona was '92, the '93 one was against AC Milan (São Paulo won both), Rogério was on the bench in this one. Also, he was the São Paulo leading goalscorer at the 2005 season even being a GK. Rogério was born em 1973, Marcos and Dida too. These two were Brazil's number 1 at 02 and 06 FWCs, respectively. Maybe the only thing Rogério didn't accomplished in his carrer. Again, thank you for your work. I would like every big football fan to know Rogério Ceni.
Im a Corinthians fan, the rival team of São Paulo, but when a was a kid, Ceni was my hero in football, i used play like a GK in my team and also shoot the free kicks. I think thats can show how big was the Ceni's impact in Brazilian football at that time.
He was Ederson before Ederson too. An athlete before his time, his long passing was top notch. Maybe if he was born 25 years later he would be banging free kicks for a EPL club rn
In high school our keeper (brazilian) was a ceni wannabe and i remember him running up all the way from the back just to sky it into the stands 😅 miss him i wonder how hes doing
There's now a new kid from the Youngster team of São Paulo that is also a 17yo scoring goalkeeper name Leandro and already scored 15 goals in the U20. Let's hope he turns to be the new Rogerio Ceni Mito 🙏
6:00 ???? São Paulo won the intercontinental cup in 1992 against barcelona, not in 1993, it won again the same cup in 1993 as well, but against Milan, and of course both years won the Libertadores as well
Thank you for this video. São Paulo fan here, and i love Rogerio Ceni. In a decisive game against Cruzeiro in 2006 he scored 2 goals and defended a penalty in the match, he also scored his 100th goal against Corinthians, one of São Paulo main rivals. He is a true legend of the game
I grew up supporting São Paulo with my dad, so I watched pretty much every single game I could and would always see this guy play. Not only his free-kick taking was top class, but he was also great at penalties! It was actually normal for one to see him score. Like "oh, São Paulo won 2-0 and Rogério scored". "Oh, cool". That for a keeper is saying a lot, as Zealand brilliantly points out here. But the thing is that he was also an amazing keeper. Look up São Paulo vs. Universidad Católica from Chile in 2013 (in Chile, by the way) and you'll see him - already pretty old, with shoulder issues and nearing retirement - have one of the greatest matches I've ever seen from a keeper. Also, the only goalkeeper I've seen play with his feet as well as Rogério is Neuer - he was just that good. People always used to say - jokingly but not 100% - that he could do a job as an outfielder. Wonderful to see him being recognised here! Great video, Z!
I know about Rogerio solely because back when i played fifa i was astonished there was a GK with a good FK rating. Of course i proceeded to build my ultimate team around him and 5* skillers. I very much enjoyed learning more about his history today.
Ceni is a massive legend. If he had had his career in Europe, he'd be more recognized. He's often considered to be a gimmick, not a proper great GK, but far from that. In his prime, he was superb. He was our 3rd GK in 2002 (Dida was special and Marcos had worked with Scolari previously) and our 2nd in 2006 (this was his prime, but Dida being in his prime as well while playing the UCL, hard to compete, but I agree Dida was better in his prime). Before he got too many injuries and started to get fat (by his final ~4-5 years you can see his beer belly lol), he was a legit great GK. By the time he was 24/25, Alisson's age when he went to Europe, he was already pretty well established as a GK here, much more than Alisson when he left Internacional (also called for the national team). Had he joined Europe at that time, without multiple injuries and still young, he would've been even more special. Up until the ~mid/late 00s, he was really good. Ofc, some fails here and there, but all great GKs have them. Overall, he was performing more miracles than failing, and he was very secure, alongside his revolutionary skills with his feet. I'm a São Paulo fan, but Rogério is a legit great player. Even without his goals, he would've been a memorable and underrated GK.
Goosebumps, man. I followed the whole of RC's carrer and... Just brilliant in every aspect. And EASILY one of the best goalkeepers ever. Thanx for this great piece of video.
It's very difficult to project, but many are completely convinced that Rogério would be the best goalkeeper in history if he had played for a big European club. Not just for the goals or the saves, but for the game. Rogério was Neuer before Neuer. Neuer was the European Rogério ten years later. He revolutionized the goalkeeper position with his feet.
Rogerio was also a master of 1x1 saves, just like Neuer. Not very good at clearings as he was not super tall and didn't had so much reach, but he could act like a handball keeper. He was super good at antecipating and also almost never conceaded goals from free kicks
I'm not brazilian but I remember vividly Sao Paulo's 2005 Copa Libertadores win because of Rogerio Ceni. The entire team was amazing. They beat River Plate in he semis by squashing them almost scientifically. His precision was next level and managers would struggle on how to defend set pieces against him. A foul close to the box was a criminal offense. Only in The Americas would something like this be possible. Ceni was not even the first goalkeeper in South America that scored goals consistently, Higuita, Chilavert and others also did it. They would have never been given that chance in Europe.
His nickname was well deserved, since the Brazilian league wasn't as prolific as European leagues, his story from my perspective deep in South Asia was definitely one of mythical proportions.
I am from Sinop-MT, the city where his first club is situated, the small Stadium that we have in the city is full of Rogério's memorials in the club, he is really famous around Brazil and the reason of a 100.000 "sinopenses" to be proud of
It's often said here in Brazil that, if Rogério Ceni were to play for a major club in Europe and got the same oportunities as he did in Brazil, he would be up there as one of the football GOAT's... One thing to comment is that he is somewhat of a controversial person, and is often criticised because of his "strong personality", even being described as "annoying as fuck" by one of Brazil's most proeminent football commentator at that time, in a leaked audio... Since his retirement as a player, he became a head coach, and his last work was in São Paulo itself, the club that helped him become the great player that he was... He was then fired, because again of his strong personality against some players in the squad. He got into arguments with players that were not intense enough during training and matches, making the squad leaders complain directly to the board about his attitude, and finally leading to his sacking... All in all, he's still one of the most promising head coaches Brazil has revealed the past few years, and I personally expect a lot from him in this new role.
In my opinion the second greatest free kick taker after Juninho Pernambucano. Nowadays Rogerio is a Football Manager™in the early stages of his career.
Another story i can share as a São Paulo supporter is a very very special one. So basically in 2011 a very heated classic was going on between São Paulo and Corinthians (y'all might remember corinthians as the team that beat Chelsea at the club world cup in 2012) and in the second half Corinthians made a foul and guess who was going to the mark? Yep, Ceni. But the thing is that if he scored that goal, it would be its 100th goal in his career. The stars aligned and everything was right, he lobs it with a perfect strike and hits the mark for the first goalkeeper in history to score 100 goal AGAINST one of São Paulo biggest rivals. He was trully legendary and i'm so very happy that i had the opportunity to see he play in my life. Thank you for sharing his amazing story Zeeland!
Those seasons after the Libertadores win they won 3 league championships in a row, something that had not been done since it became a points league(no playoffs). 3 peat is also an amazing peak as the best player like you said scored a lot. He could have been the goalie in 2006 World Cup squad but Dida was in front of him. We will never know how he would have done and what Brazil would have accomplished in 2006 if he had his chance.
There is a lot of high tier players in the world who would only be promoted from the junior category because they suffered less injuries than their companions. There is a lot of high tier players who was number 3 or 4 for his role in the team, but never left the main team after a chance was given. Surely he couldn't stay working at the bank cuz someone was "conspiring" to get him fired?
I haven't played a FIFA game constantly since FIFA 16. If EA gives Rogério an Icon card, I'd immediately buy it. Unfortunately he always sucked in the games because he was already out of his prime when FIFA multiplayer got big, but sometimes I'd use him in my OP squads to try to score some freekicks. Maybe we played each other (especially if it's FIFA 12 or 13).
Picture this: you are a kid seeing your football hero walking up to the other team's goal and just KNOWING it'll bring danger to them! it was almost a magical feeling, I'm damn sure if it wasn't for Rogério I wouldn't love football as much, he made me know that in football everything is just conventional, there are no hard rules that can't be bent.
I still remember the interview where a journalist were accusing him about faking a contract signature to Arsenal to make São Paulo renew his contract and then he contacted the network and tols the truth in a humiliating way to the journalist.
There's been quite a few totally bonkers gk's, Ceni, Chilavert, Higuita and going back further you had Grobelaar (not sure about the spelling of his name). These were goalies made for entertainment and entertain they did 😁
This is the first football fact I ever learned, I was reading through the Guniess Book of Records and at the time he had "only" scored 50 some goals, but was still in it, but after like 15 some years, I still remember his name
This was reason I feel in love with Sao Paulo and truthfully club I supported for years along with Cardiff City but Sao Paulo will always be my Number 1. But seriously Rogerio Ceni made me want be a goalkeeper even though I sucked in goal 😂 and top of that Sao Paulo played Beautiful football and create big stars.
It is also worth mentioning José Luis Chilavert as well. Not as impressive as Ceni, but he still managed to score 62 goals (a record broken by Ceni itself).
Fellow Brazilian here, with a ball on his hands and his feet, the man with a big nose and loosing a few hair was just a legend. But if he workes with someone as a coach, everyone says he is unbearable. Friendly when a friend, annoying as a colleague.
I feel like being a goalkeeper who is good at free kicks must be a great advantage as goalkeepers are gonna be the best at exploiting other keepers on freekicks, because they probably know the weakness of a goalkeeper more than most players on the field.
can you pls do a alta if on day maybe most artic club in the world on fm and very good youth irl with 2 u16 nasjonal players for norway but both have left to bodø/glimt and rb leipzig but plenty other talents and good older players with not much Successes ever

All in all, he's still one of the most promising head coaches Brazil has revealed the past few years, and I personally expect a lot from him in this new role.
10:33 he almost got an eye poked out xD
Great vid bro!
I feel like Ceni is taken for granted here in Brazil
I believe he's the inspiration for the "my big fat GK can score more than your big fat GK" challenge on the FM forums. Always a fun one!
true love story! Rogerio Ceni and SPFC! the dude is all about loalty and perseverence
In my opinion the second greatest free kick taker after Juninho Pernambucano.
Nowadays Rogerio is a Football Manager™in the early stages of his career.
Also he saved 51 penalties, more than any goalkeeper
On top of all that he was a strong leader for his teammates. His pre-game speeches were very inspiring. And Im not even a fan of Sao Paulo.
Clearly this was a 'connected' guy - all these timely accidents and deaths XD
There is a lot of high tier players in the world who would only be promoted from the junior category because they suffered less injuries than their companions. There is a lot of high tier players who was number 3 or 4 for his role in the team, but never left the main team after a chance was given. Surely he couldn't stay working at the bank cuz someone was "conspiring" to get him fired?
Ceni is awesome
Mencionou o Brasil, a gente toma conta dos comentários 🇧🇷
This man was a beast on fifa. I can remember someone using him against me and BURYING a beastly free kick. That's how i found out about him
I haven't played a FIFA game constantly since FIFA 16. If EA gives Rogério an Icon card, I'd immediately buy it. Unfortunately he always sucked in the games because he was already out of his prime when FIFA multiplayer got big, but sometimes I'd use him in my OP squads to try to score some freekicks. Maybe we played each other (especially if it's FIFA 12 or 13).
hes become a fairly good manager
Picture this: you are a kid seeing your football hero walking up to the other team's goal and just KNOWING it'll bring danger to them! it was almost a magical feeling, I'm damn sure if it wasn't for Rogério I wouldn't love football as much, he made me know that in football everything is just conventional, there are no hard rules that can't be bent.
I still remember the interview where a journalist were accusing him about faking a contract signature to Arsenal to make São Paulo renew his contract and then he contacted the network and tols the truth in a humiliating way to the journalist.
I used to try and sign him as my keeper back in the old Championship Manager days for skill at set pieces.
What a legend!
I knew about the goalscoring keeper but the details are so much cooler and more interesting
Fun fact: I learned to take free kicks in FIFA/PES just by watching the 100th Ceni goal. It is, in fact, perfect.
I am a Corinthians supporter but I respect his career and achievements. Also he conceded 95 goals in 67 maches against my team 😅
Sou um homem simples, eu vejo Rogério Ceni em um vídeo e clico
It is also worth mentioning José Luis Chilavert as well. Not as impressive as Ceni, but he still managed to score 62 goals (a record broken by Ceni itself).
ROGÉRIO CENI, O MAIOR GOLEIRO DE TODOS OS TEMPOS.
Fellow Brazilian here, with a ball on his hands and his feet, the man with a big nose and loosing a few hair was just a legend.
But if he workes with someone as a coach, everyone says he is unbearable.
Friendly when a friend, annoying as a colleague.
Rogerio Ceni também é o SEGUNDO goleiro que mais defendeu pênaltis na história. 51 pênaltis defendidos. Perde apenas para Lev Yashin, com 150 defesas.
Lmao Rogério Ceni made it to Zealand 😂
I wonder how fun it would have been if he played for Brazil in the world cups, imagine him scoring a free kick in the finals
He' also a very good coach these days although he left Fortaleza twice mid season so I'm a bit salty
I feel like being a goalkeeper who is good at free kicks must be a great advantage as goalkeepers are gonna be the best at exploiting other keepers on freekicks, because they probably know the weakness of a goalkeeper more than most players on the field.
bro's the luckiest man alive
damn zealand made a diy unskippable ad
Banging bid bro I love the content keep it up
The Shohei Ohtani of Football
can you pls do a alta if on day maybe most artic club in the world on fm and very good youth irl with 2 u16 nasjonal players for norway but both have left to bodø/glimt and rb leipzig but plenty other talents and good older players with not much Successes ever
Crazy take: all teams have to have GKs as penalty takers.
best player ever!!!
It seems you've been diving into brazilian football lately, Zealand. Have you ever thought about managing an FM Save in the lower leagues of Brazil?
Love the videos, Zealand!
I'd love a video about the 2009 Confederations Cup!
Maybe youtube have some videos of when this goalkeeper free kick try went wrong, and the team end up suffering a counter attack goal... :p
I remember a match that Ceni with Caca played against my team (Vasco da Gama) and we won 7x1.
That match was crazy. Ok, we had Romario as the striker but 7x1 was crazy
Aí Depois o Romário saiu aí foi um túmulo pro Vascão
I want to know how many times the free kick went straight to the opposition for them to knock a long ball up and score in an unguarded goal.
Just once, as far as I remember
Only one time, he scored but the other tema get back faster while he was celebrating and scored... still, he won the match by 4 x 3
