The Most Expensive Player You've Never Heard Of

  • It is a special thing to be the most expensive player in history. It is a mantle reserved for the likes of Neymar, Maradona, and Ronaldo. The highest transfer fee ever paid for a player in the history of football, of soccer. But then, there is Gigi Lentini. A truly gifted player who is in this club, but is almost all but forgotten.
His story mirrors the professionalization of the modern game by showing the players it left behind. How certain pieces of genius can be ruined by constraint and how the money in the game can corrupt otherwise free spirits. It’s also a triumph of football because of the way he responded to adversity that would crush so many others.
    Much Love,
    The Zealand

You forgot to mention one of the most important parts of this story:
He ended the 1994/95 season in world-class form, scoring 5 goals in the 7 matches that preceded the Champions League final against Ajax. Everyone expected him to start, but Capello (the manager at the time) only subbed him on with 5 minutes left of the game, moments before Kluivert would win the game for Ajax. Lentini was left so disappointed that he claimed that was the day his career ended

Drove from Liverpool to Milan during Lentinis first season to watch that team play. The players they had Gullit, Van Basten, Rijkaard, my favourite midfield player ever. It was 18th October 1992 and it was my 18th birthday and we watched them beat Lazio 5-3.

I'm 40 and remember this guy quite well from when I was a kid, albeit the main reason I remember him is for that world record transfer fee that was not broken until Ronaldo's move to Barca some years later. That said, for me he is not the biggest flop (in my life time) to break/hold the world record transfer free, for that see Denilson.

I was aware of his career and potential being cut short by a car accident, but had no idea of any other further details regarding his career, only that he was a "what could have been" kind of player at the time. You should look at doing a video on AS Nancy. They played in Europe in the late 2000’s, were in Ligue 1 in 2017, won the Coupe de France and the Coupe de la Ligue this century, and have a stadium capacity of over 20,000, but they were relegated to the 4th division at the end of the 22/23 season and might have gotten demoted to the 5th division based on something like administration problems. They are currently set to play in the third division of France after some sort of appeal to be brought out of the 4th division. with a stadium that can hold over 20,000. There is a lot of drama and a lot of confusing behind the scenes stuff.

Can you make a video about whether Messi can lead Inter Miami to the MLS playoffs this year? They're sitting in last with 18 points and 12 matches remaining. 12-0-0 (unlikely) would get them to 54 points, which historically would more than enough to get into the playoffs as 7th place is usually around 45-48 points.
If he's able to make this unprecedented historical comeback, how would this affect the league? From a PR standpoint it's a double-edged sword. On the one hand, Messi would be getting many headlines and press for the league. On the other hand, it could be rightly asserted that Messi, an aging superstar, is showing how far behind the MLS is in terms of talent.

It's great seeing stories like this, but can I give a tip? Mostly for the editor.
When Zealand misspeaks, like when he says AC Milan instead of Juventus, onscreen text isn't really a great correction. If Zealand can't re-record the line, in that case you could have easily spliced in "Juventus" when he said it another time. You had b-roll, so you wouldn't even have to worry about a jump cut. That's one example but there are lots of little things that could look a little more professional.
I think you could really up the production value by making a little extra effort. What you've done is great work, but it's tainted by clumsy mistakes. Don't settle for that. Go the extra mile & make it something amazing.

    • @iamAyal
      @iamAyal ปีที่แล้ว

Why isn't it a "great correction"? It conveys the information necessary for an unimportant detail in a succinct fashion. No need to find a voice clip that will sound super out of place and not flow well at all when the obvious solution is much simpler.
Zealand makes mistakes all the time, most of the time he catches them but sometimes they make it through to the recording, and then I have to deal with them. If it's inconsequential, like the pronunciations in the video and saying the wrong team, then most of the time I'll do something simple and effective to correct it or just make a small joke out of it. It's not "unprofessional", it's just different to what your idealized version of this video is.
The amount of work that has gone into this, not only from Zealand but also in the compositing of images, researching of clips, and editing all together, goes far beyond whatever you're trying to insinuate by telling me to "make a little extra effort".
All this, not to mention the hypocrisy coming from someone saying to "not settle for that" when their own profile images doesn't fit inside the circle for the profile picture.

@@iamAyal It's TH-cam, people aren't always fixed on watching a video. They do things in other monitors, they look down at their phone, they multitask. It's easy to miss a small piece of text when you glance away but keep listening.
I absolutely recognise the large amount of effort that goes into creating a video like this, but it's that little bit extra that makes it really great. I trained in editing & post production at film school years ago & while I don't currently do any editing, I do work in the TV industry. It's not a lay opinion to say that the little bit of extra polish at the final stage can bring together all the elements people worked so hard on & make them really shine.
I'm not trying to disparage anyone. I'm trying to encourage Zealand & his team to take it to the next level & create something that will grow & reach the large audience he deserves to.
As for my profile picture, that's an ad hominem attack, but I'll address it anyway. At one point I wanted to create a channel of my own & I hired a guy to make a logo for me because that's not my forte. I was not happy with this iteration, but I used it as a placeholder. He then ghosted me & never finished the job. I scrapped my plans to work on the channel because I didn't have the time necessary to achieve the levels of quality I believe would be required for success. I've since put my efforts into other creative outlets. The half-baked logo remains, but there's no real brand for it to detract from.

@@GIBBO4182 not sure. I played it on PC. It was msDOS based and had two versions. One for computers with 8 megabytes of RAM and the other 16 MB. I remember all the French players had amazing attributes even the cheap ones. I used to play as Leyton Orient because they were 3rd tier (lowest) and had Bjorn Heidenstrom who had passing of 20.

I've mostly enjoyed this new style of deep dive videos you've been doing, but the lack of research into pronunciation of players' names is just awful. It wouldn't take that long to find out how to pronounce Matthaus, Papin and Desailly. These aren't obscure players.

These are some of the best players of their time.
