A while back I noticed the Galactica filming model in an unlabeled display case in an alley at Universal Florida - like they didn’t really care about it. It was only something like 3 feet long and while it looked great on TV you could see it had been built low-budget with some creative kit-bashing - the tubes that form the engine section are stage halves from the Saturn V kit.
This is a real labour of love for such an iconic space craft, a truly gorgeous build and huge thanks for sharing this with us. You sir are a real craftsman and artist, looking forward to seeing her complete. Loved that you dedicated this video to the late Richard Hatch, a great man and passionate Battlestar fan and actor.
Absolutely fantastic! I remember watching the premiere of the show and it was interrupted by the president speaking. They never properly allowed the series to get off the ground and then after a few episodes they started moving the time slot. Was still one of the best sci-fi showers ever produced.
Almost 20 years in the making. May hat's off and all the respect in the world to you for all your dedication to this project. I loved the original BSG.
Absolutely wonderful!!!! I’m 55 and still am fascinated by the Galactica!! You’ve lived a dream that I’ve had for so many years. I bet you’ll treasure that forever!! It’s crazy and only people like us can understand why anyone would do this! Congratulations sir on a great job almost done!! If you ever want to sell let me know!!
Thankyou for your kind words Han! We are definitely in that age group that were inspired by the great 70s sci fi revolution. She's been a labour of love that's for sure. The Galactica is 90% done, has the fibre optic windows installed and is in grey primer patiently waiting for me to finish her.😀
I I really loved the Galactica from the 1978 series, however as a builder of studio models over the years, I have always wanted to build a replica of this ship but at a larger scale, say 20 feet in length. The Galactica was supposed to be 2000 feet in length and in many of the shots of the ship, there were many blank areas. This was likely due to budget constraints and the way that models were constructed at the time. Today, CGI would be used but there is something about the artistry of a solid, 3D big miniature. When filming these beauties, often there are unintended shadows from tiny outcroppings on the model that a digital engineer could not plan for. These unintended events really make a miniature pop. One of my favorite shots of Galactica is when she arcs away from the camera at flank speed. She really looks like a massive ship in this shot. The re-builf model in this video was great too.
wow amazing work. I was such a huge galactic fan as a teen. I ordered a Viper pilot jacket from an advertisement in comic book, it didn't turn up for nearly a year & by the time it did I had grown too much to wear it. I was gutted.
Great job! The original Galactica looks like a flying "oil refinery" Looks like they said.."hey! we need more stuff to make this ship fly, but no space left! I know!..just weld it to the outer hull!" Cheers!
If you watch the first video , you'll notice it is a Battlestar but not the "Galactica"...... Small detail but still all important, especially if you've seen the props and logo designs for the other intended Battlestars for the original series. So much story was and future cannon was was already getting fleshed out to only be ruined by executives that didn't see the legacy they could have made and now look back at the legacy they created but failed to cash in on....
I spent My ENTIRE LIFE , ALL WAS ABOUT BATTLESTAR GALACTICA . when I was A young boy...before going to school I would draw scnerios of Galactica....letting my imagination fly into another world called Galactica....getting home from school I would put in the BETAMAX and play Battletar Galactica... I did this for years, drove my sisters crazy....

This was in my history videos, I don't recall seeing it. AND ITS SOMETHING I WOULDN'T FORGET!!! As one of BSG's biggest fans this left me speechless man.
Hah hah, thanks mate! You could call me a fan also....I am as fascinated with the old girl now as I was as a little kid in 1978. She's my spiritual starship home I guess.😀
I have to admit, I have never seen a model of that size and that detail ready for another shot at glory or a reboot as this one. Someone's ready for their close up I think. Bravo sir.
@@wintheking7884 No, it's the original Galactica from the original 70's and 80's series. Back then all Battlestars were the same and there were no 'classes'.
That's an impressive build of one of the top 5 best starships ever designed for scifi. The Battlestar Galactica is the only one I have ever wanted to own a model of. I built a scale model of the Millennium Falcon years ago but only got as far as the superstructure and interior flooring. That alone took me over 100 hours and it was only 55cm long. Each piece had to be carefully measured, cut, shaped or formed into the desired shape for fitting. I wish I'd finished it but raw materials proved to be difficult to obtain as I wasn't using off the shelf kits. I can't begin to calculate the amount of time you've dedicated to this Grand Lady of the Colonial Fleet. I tip my hat to you. 👍 😉.
It's easy to forget that most of the classic scifi studio models were just styrene card and kitbashed greebles... so if you've got a good eye (and a ton of patience) you can build some amazing things. Like this.
Mike, absolutely brilliant. Wonderful job looking after what has to be arguably one of the best ships ever designed. I love you your work and you have done her proud. Anytime you want to drop her off at my place in Melbourne, but let me know...
You had me 10 seconds into the show. The work is really good and the dedication is there. I can't imagine how much data you have acquired to get the details. You are right. You may cry and moan, but sometimes to get it right you have to just start from scratch.
It's one of my favorite designs (both versions). Except, I never understood where the fuel would be for such a GINORMOUS drive section lol! I never read the Galactica technical manual but even the Enterprise has a huge deuterium tank for it's relatively tiny drive section.

It will always look way more realistic than CGI - great job. Now all you need is the motion controlled computer driven camera setup that Lucasfilm created back in the day.
I remember Gerry Anderson once saying that to produce another tv show like thunderbirds would cost several millions of pounds just for the miniature effects. Looking at all the kit parts used just to use a few parts of a sprue, I'm guessing it cost a small fortune as especially now model kits more than doubled in price after the global collapse of the banks as it effected businesses . Absolutely awesome work. If it wasn't for the cost I'd have a crack at Galactica
They're not a cheap thing to build, no! Mine was built from basic materials though, there is a kit available for 14k....I did use a lot of resin castings for the detail parts which is much cheaper but several dozen model kits were purchased as well. It's been a 20 year build so the cost was hardly noticeable.
An amazing documentation, of an even more amazing work of 3D artwork. Although this wasn't built by ILM... it WAS built by one of the most talented group of kitbash modelers, ever to practice the art form. In looking through this, seeing various kit bits stuck to the Galactica's hull plating, I can see much more clearly, what some of the parts and pieces are... Thanks for this video. A fantastic reference, for those of us, who love the "old" G!
Wow. What an amazing job you did. I remember seeing the original (movie first then show) and you work is stunning. Makes me want to watch the original show again.
