A rare raag from the 'Queen of Gwalior'.
Pandita Malini Rajurkar is in today's date, the finest and the foremost exponent of the Gwalior Gharana. Blessed with a natural, sonorous and full-throated voice, she is considered to be one of the best examples of effortlessness in vocalism, combined with impeccable aesthetics of music.
Having learnt from Pt. Vasantrao Rajurkar, she has also been influenced by Pt. Kumar Gandharva's Gayaki.
Her individuality lies in the rendition of Tappa, an increasingly rare genre of semi classical music. The flexibility in her voice is the unparalleled quality one can look upon in her music.

ABOUT THE RAAG:
This raag is a combination of Kalavati and Shuddha Kalyan. Some musicologists note that this is very close to Janasammohini and Kohari Kalyan. This raag uses Re in Aaroha, which is not used in Janasammohini and some use Komal Nishad in Aaroha, which makes it different from Kohari Kalyan. It has a tint of Bhoop in the Poorvanga, and Kalavati in the Uttaranga.
To me, this recording appears to be 'Kalyan me Kalavati'. Look at how she produces her signature, lightning sapaat and tappa-style taans of Gwalior with considerable ease in a mishra raga as difficult as this.
