Remembering Vidushi Veena Sahasrabuddhe | Lecture Demonstration on "Gharanas in Hindustani Music"

Today, 14th September, marks the 74th birthday of our dearest Vidushi Veena Sahasrabuddhe, an ace vocalist of the Gwalior Gharana, whom we remember for her incredible voice, ornate aesthetics and majestic style of presentation of all forms of classical and semi-classical music.
Having her training and subsequent gayaki primarily rooted in the Gwalior khayal style of music, Veenatai did not hesitate to adapt elements from the other gharanas, which she found suitable to her temperament. She is credited for her impeccable study on the topic of 'taranas', which she presented with commendable ease, variety and dexterity.
She trained a number of students under her, notably including Sawani Shende, Rachna Bodas, Aparna Gurav, Surashree Joshi, Jayanti Sahasrabuddhe, Chinmayee Athale, Atul Khandekar, and Dr. Ranjani Ramachandran. She also headed the Department of Music at the SNDT University, Pune.
The Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal posthumously conferred upon her the honorary degree " संगीत महामहोपाध्याय " in 2019 for her outstanding contribution to the field of music.

She discusses four major streams: Kirana, Jaipur-Atrauli, Agra and Gwalior in this lecture. This should be beneficial for students of music, connoisseurs and avid listeners, to understand the finer nuances of the stylistic aspects of the above mentioned gharanas/ styles.
