Professor, on the one hand I walk along Pell and Mott and the Bowery at least twice a week; on the other hand, I have heard about the infamous Tong Wars of the turn-of-the-century Chinatown. And now, listening enrapt to your lectures, I find closure and a deep satisfaction. Thank you for your offering.

This is a great series about something I know very little about. Thanks much for making and posting this.

Dude in the pic looks exactly like Father Jun from Warrior, including the weird right eye!

Too many people don't realise that the world still runs on brute force, and that has never changed!

Unfortunately this is true.....Might does NOT always make right.

    • @Amidat

It does... But in the end - it is righteousness that lasts. Those that resort to brute force never have peace because they will always have to fight.

刘关张赵 is a quite common surname society in other Chinese community as it’s from the 3 kingdoms stories

In the first episode you mentioned that the tongs would mess with on another by snitching. On the second episode you say they had too much honor to do that?

Yeah, that's been known to happen from time to time throughout gangland history. The Code of Honor is, on occasion, dishonored.

Someone should make a video game based on this. There's enough yakuza games
