- Clash Royale's Log has been dominating the Clash Royale meta game with close to 40% use rates for several years, despite several nerfs. This video goes over how log has evolved in the meta over the years and how it's remained so powerful.

As a log lover, the idea of lumberjack cutting it but also being distracted by the log is something i really love and it's a sweet concept.
but people would play swarms behind the the lumberjack. Which is kinda problematic coz you wouldnt be able to play log
I would definitely be on board with that idea... it's interesting & makes sense mechanic wise... just like Ghost & Healer being a floating troop able to cross river & not affected by evo Rg's knockback

My favorite part is how genuinely excited gratz gets over the notion of unique lumberjack/log interactions, and I wholeheartedly love the idea. Would be perfect for a valentine's day update too imo.

The log is like Landorus-T in competitive pokemon. It's not a bad thing that it's on every team, because it checks the actually broken threats and isn't frustrating to play against. It's essentially just the glue of the metagame
Tbh, that's small spells in general to me.
Comparing Lando-T and the log is probably the best way to compare this card despite how different CR and Pokémon are. In my eyes the log will always be technically the best card in CR even if it’s not overpowered
Except Lando-T didn't get special treatment from developers to keep it as the most used unit in the game lol. Other cards that compete with log get nerfed but precious Legendary card will never be touched more than once every few years
As a person that has played both games, this was the perfect way to compare. Both are very versatile and fit into many decks/teams for different/varied purposes, yet due to its sheer importance, removing either would result in a drastic effect, good or bad, to the metas of both games.
It's Tornado that's actually fundamentally broken (Would argue the best card in the entire game, but not many ready for that conversation)
the log's legendary ability is to always be good
the exact opposite of the Night Witch, which relies on other cards to be good.

Adding onto the lumberjack idea, i think that whenever the executioner attacks cards like bandit and rascals, the entire match should pause when the bandit is at 1 shot range and a public execution with either a noose or a guillutine should be erected to spread fear amongst the populace and teach kids to not do the crime, if they dont wanna lose all the time they'd have if they were to not do the crime
Memes aside, immagine if Executioner did more damage to evil/criminal troops but less damage to good/lawful troops. And of course, instant kill to royal troops French style.

There was one very random nerf to The Log: sometime around 2021 (IIRC), they made it so that killing a Goblin Giant with it would not kill the Spear Goblins anymore, unlike what still happens to the Battle Ram to this day.
Haven't played Clash Royale in a very long while, but I still really enjoy your documentaries. You are able to make a 40 minute story about a card engaging even for someone like me who isn't in touch with the current state of the game, which is really impressive. Keep up the good work!

What could be interesting is not really a card in particular history but in general a "why cycles decks are so good in the meta" (going to the history of how the cycle decks over the years became stronger and stronger)
I mean, the main strength/appeal of a cycle deck is the ability to outcycle the counters the other guy has
Then there's 1 mana heal so I'm sure cycling isn't everything.
@@N12015 The main reason why cycle works is because of how much value you could get with those cheap 1 elixir cards, you'd be surprised by how much you could save by defending with ice spirit and skeletons alone
Especially now due to evolutions being based on cycles so you would get a broken card faster
honestly i want to see cycle decks fall a bit, the meta's always been kept so much more stagnant than it has to be because of heavier cards generally not doing well. i don't know how they'd achieve it, but i really just want to see some heavier cards like all the giant variants, golems, pekkas, etc. cards like goblin giant or pekka are just so much more fun to play with and against than mindlessly spamming skeletons, ice spirits, and goblin barrels or hog riders.

I remember despising this piece of spiky wood back when I played because it was a legendary and I was a free player, so I could never get the thing and it always seemed to flatten my strategies.
Then again I was a dumb kid when I played so anything meta would've probably drawn my ire.

The tough thing about suggesting balance changes for other small spells is that The Log's presence has completely warped the way people perceive the strength of the card type. It's considered perfectly acceptable for one to have a 50% use rate just because that's how it's been for the longest time. Practically speaking, Zap, Barb Barrel, and Snowball are all completely viable cards, but The Log makes them look weak just because it sits so much higher above them.
Something I also like to blame for why Log is so dominant is the ever-present Goblin Barrel. It also maintains super high stats through basically every meta and is popular in all ladder ranges, which is rare for wincons. The main reason IMO why it's so hard to stop and why Log is considered the one perfect counter is the fact that center placements exist. Zap and Snowball are both soft counters, unable to fully kill it if anything else tanks or your tower is disabled in any way. Meanwhile Barb Barrel has a tiny radius that is easy to dodge and the Barb that emerges usually gets 0 value since he has to cross the bridge and dies before connecting. Log meanwhile is a positive trade, has a huge AOE, instantly kills it, and can partially deal with support troops. These facts tend to just totally scare people out of using other options and they resort to the much more safe and reliable option every time. Dominant Strategy is 100% in effect in this scenario.
Obviously Log needs its own nerf, but Goblin Barrel also deserves to go down. The two have secretly been controlling the game for years and are given the excuse that they're popular or that the game needs to keep them around for some arbitrary reason. Since you gave plenty of ideas for Log changes, my simple idea is to just remove the center placement from Goblin Barrel. Miner and Goblin Drill can't be placed directly on your tower, and Tricky Barrels would still be valuable. It would just become much easier to actually counter the card with splash instead of having most of them be entirely ineffective because it automatically spreads itself out.
This is honestly very well put. Despite there being several small spells in the game, the Log is the only one that can consistently shut down things like Goblin Barrels (provided you don't mess up), which is an advantage the devs haven't touched upon for pretty much the entire duration of its existence. Sure, it was bad at the start, but that was only because its competition was in nearly 100% of every deck. Now, it clowns on its competition because of high versatility in various decks and metas.
I do like your idea of making Goblin Barrel unable to be center placed on Crown Towers, but I'm a bit concerned that it'd kill the card since center placements are a key part as to how it gets damage. Not saying I hate it or anything, but a popular win condition doesn't deserve to die just because a spiked piece of wood is too good.
Goblin barrel has had rather low usage recently. Remember the global tourney where log was banned? There was not a single bait deck in top 10 indicating even if log is deleted bait will still be average.

A nerf I've always wondered about applying to Log: for every troop the Log hits, its range is slightly reduced. So if there aren't any troops/buildings/etc in its way, it reaches the Princess Tower no problem. But if there are multiple troops in the way, like Skeleton Army, then its range is drastically reduced.
At least, something to this effect. I'm not nearly in tune enough with this game to know the intricacies of whether it'd be better to judge this by troop number, or troop mass, or whether buildings like X-bow should slow it down, etc. Just something I've always thought about, considering how easy a card it is to cycle.
I could see this actually being a nice change so Hog Rider decks can't spell cycle as easily
It is an interesting idea. At first I though that the proposal was a joke, but after you explained your reasoning, I can see how you thought of it. However, I don’t really like the idea of a card having very complicated interactions with one other card, sort of like a lock and key.
I agree that cards shouldn’t have complicated interactions between specific cards, but the proposal here is just “the lumberjack can hit the log”, so I’d be fine with it in the game

I think many cards like xbow, 3 musketeers are quite terrible in ladder just like pekka. Idk what you mean by fan favorite though.

I would say mini pekka is even more overrated & overhyped
Midladders act like it's the best card, while in reality pros rarely use it in pro scenes & most popular decks have little to none mini pekka due to many other better alternatives
as a midladder player myself these two cards are popular to counter meta knight and mini pekka simply counters more stuff than pekka because of the lower elixir cost

I don’t play or watch clash royale anymore, but Gratz’s videos are unique and are worth watching, talking about the backstory of cards and other stuff is what makes Gratz’s content enjoyable and worth watching.
I remember playing this game back in high-school, your channel has been bringing me back so many memories I had playing this with my friends and how we raced to 3k trophies back when that was the legendary arena lol seriously keep making these videos man. On the topic of the log tho, it may be a simple card that doesn't do much on paper but it does enough. Clearing out fodder enemies is always a major important role and that half second it can give you when it knocks something back can be the difference between a tower going down or staying up.
I feel old when I watch these, very nostalgic for ogs

There should be a lilypad structure you place in the river that only allows your troops to cross it, lasts 7 seconds, and can't be destroyed by the enemy.
Of course the lilypad would become a metal lilypad painted green when the map has a lava river. It might have an outline, red or blue, depending on which player placed it so it's easier to see.

Very well put together video. I personally love the Log, but having it be affected by the Lumberjack in the way you suggested would be wonderful. I also think that if you and your opponent place a log or a barbarian barrel against each other the spells would “bounce off” each other and cancel each one out.
I was always biased towards the zap, love that card, but I have more recently put log in a few decks and the card does feel FANTASTIC to play
I don't get nerfing a card just cause it's popular , instead of taking account if it is op or is it toxic/unhealthy for the game.

As a Log user myself, I wouldn't want to see it nerfed again, but it's simply irreplaceable in cycle decks for the chip damage, cycle, and versatility. Wouldn't be surprised if they eventually nerf it again...

The Log was my first legendary and at first I was "oh it's just a piece of wood", kinda underwhelming feeling since I got it from a legendary chest, for which I had high expectations. But then by using it I started to love it and realize how good it was, then I discovered it was the best card in the game 😂
It's the spell with the most "personality" and genuinely cool to play with.
Also 10/10 sound design

I approve of your idea about the Lumberjack. I like it very much and it would certainly make him more "Legendary".
With the nerfed knockback, the Log doesn't feel that legendary anymore. You can't really feel the difference.
But still it is the strongest spell in the game. Probably in a year we can see another nerf to log
A legendarys mechanic doesn't need to be extremely good in order for it to "feel legendary." The fact it can function as an area of denial spell, as a cycle card, a positive elixir trade against troops like princess, and knockback troops makes it easily top 3 legendaries in the game. You might not think a 1 tile knockback is much, but that gives high dps troops and buildings more time to dps down, say an E-giant. It also makes it easier for a player to knockback a slow tank and retarget them onto a building. So a knockback nerf was needed. Despite this nerf, it still deserves the rarity of legendary for all the versatility it offers that no other small spell does.
The log is the only legendary spell but is limited in its deployment , so if it doesn’t have any advantages over the other cards then it just makes it below common

@@hondurasen3632 Strongest is a big statement. The log doesn't really provides any unfair interaction that requires a nerf. It's just that the mechanics are suited to cycle archetype. It's the same reason why skellies/gobs are used in cycle but not even any other archetype.
My personal fix for the log would be the introduction of another proactive spell. I feel that's the niche that's keeping the card powerful.

I think there was an important detail you missed in the log/small spell history, Rage was reworked to do damage and even could kill stab goblins, and do knockback so it was essentially a log that could be played anywhere on the map (This would also affect the lumberjack's rage). I personally wanted this buff to come out so badly but instead, it was given zap's damage instead of the log's.

Cannon Cart might be an interesting one to cover. The only troop that turns into a building. It arrived at the same time as our infamous midladder menace, the megaknight, and has been in and out of some of the most broken deck archetypes. There are many instances where it's in the bottom of use rates but in the top of win rates, being a very underrated card. It's been changed so many times that even I have a hard time remembering. And now it's in a weird spot where it's not really used, but I can't help but keep noticing it's incredible potential in every deck I play it in. Been my favorite card since its release. (quick tip for midladder players put there, this card literally counters your opponent's entire deck. full counters witch, wizard, megaknight, executioner, ebarbs, you name it.)

True, but cart also costs 5 elixir. A good player can counter those cards quite easily with cheaper cards.

It is totally outclassed by archer queen. It's a very non versatile card that works only in two archetypes (mortar bait and bridgespam).
Log is just such a beloved, fun to use card with an iconic design and sfx, i think thats why everyone wants jt to be OP. The lumberjack cutting it would be super cool

Seeing the Log now vs how it was when it first came out is impressive. I remember everyone who got a legendary was hyped every time, except if it was the Log lol I remember getting a Log from a wooden chest and had a combination of happiness and anger.
