Danny Gallivan to me had to be the greatest play by play man of all time. He didn't have the typical voice for it either but what he did better than anyone was change his inflection and delivery when the puck was near the net. He could bring you out of your seat just with the tone of his voice, I absolutely loved listening to him as a kid.

If Canada has “Hockey Night in Canada,” the United States has “Monday Night Football.”

Growing up I have cheered for Edmonton, Vancouver and Colorado. My mom cheered for bolth Edmonton and Boston, my mom actually used to watch Bobby Orr during the training season in her hometown of Estevan, Saskatchewan back in the day. My dad was the one who got me interested and loving Hockey when we used to play street Hockey or video games such as Blades of steel (NES) or NHLPA Hockey '93 (Genesis) or when I used to go see him play for his company's team (no contact). I Love Hockey! Also Let's Go Oilers!!

4:50 A young Chris Cuthbert with a full head of hair. Didn't recognize him for a minute. Also , I saw a much younger Dave Hodge who looked like he left the Beatles for the HNIC gig.

2:40 to 2:50 Bob Goldham (played for the Leafs, Chicago and the Red Wings from the mid '40's into the mid-'50's) being interviewed by Ward Cornell and then by Dave Hodge (Cornell's successor).

Where is Howie Meeker? Isn't he the guy who said, "jiminy cricket?"

Anyone know when Danny Gallivan made that "The time of the unexpected, the time of the upsets" quote? It always seems to get used in tributes to him.

I didn't think Ted Darling ever worked for "Hockey Night In Canada".
I thought he had spent most of the 1960's calling minor-league hockey in Buffalo, and when the city got an NHL franchise in 1970, the radio station broadcasting the Sabres hired him.

He actually did. Prior to his Sabres work, he actually did some telecasts from Montreal.

I never knew that either. Rick Jeanerette is a bloviating clown who can't hold Darling's jock.

Is there any footage around of Bill Hewitt's breakdown (his last game) in 1981? It was a pre-season affair and I've heard it was one of the most tragic instances of a nervous breakdown on-air in broadcast history.

Bill Hewitt was a great, great Broadcaster, its sad that happened, but Prior to that he was great play by play man for the Leafs.

I watched that game--at least I had it on TV. It was a preseason game, so I think it aired on CHCH-TV from Hamilton. I was only half-heartedly following it, but something was obviously wrong with Bill Hewitt. He kept on referring to players who had long retired. He was basically yanked from the booth between periods. He never game back. Somewhere out in cyberspace there's a very good, lengthy article about it.
