    Unfortunately, this wouldn't be the last time a Shopping Cart would be responsible for a train crash. On October 23rd, 2000, a Long Island Rail Road train struck a stray cart on the tracks, and it shorted out the Third Rail and the train caught fire, and although nobody was killed, the lead engine, DM30AC #503, was a Total Loss, and was used as a Part Donor until it was finally scrapped in July 2018.

    If those kids had been arrested, here are the charges they would face: 1) Will Destruction of Federal Property (Being that the railroad is a federally governed entity), 2) Theft (by unlawful taking {meaning the shopping cart}).

    I need to add that the video is not bad for an old VHS transfer.

    I wonder if the railyard had security footage. If not, I hope someone saw the little ingrates do this. What if, instead of wine, that train was loaded with tanker cars of chlorine gas or anhydrous ammonia or the like?

    Trains be like "giant unstoppable mass of iron that WILL obliterate anything that dares cross its path", but at the same time a shopping cart placed just in the right position is just too much to ask

    Maybe none of the train crew got hurt, but I bet they about crapped their pants when things started going south!

    Hard to believe that this is from a shopping cart! What part of a shopping cart is strong enough to cause this?

    • @josephhalexander
      @josephhalexander 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Any part of it. If it shears through enough ties, track will give way; if it gets jammed in the crossover, wheels can climb over and come off the track. Without video of the actual incident in progress, you'll have to "think outside the box (or rails," in this case.

    In Fort Morgan Colorado, the old timers used to say a sugar beet ( they are quite large and hard) could derail a train.

    The police should have "wedged" the kids who did this somewhere like jail.

    Wow, glad nobody got hurt. That shopping cart ain't hauling anymore groceries. What happened to the kids that left the cart? It sure piled it all up. Cheers, Dan

    Poor camera handling. Back and forth so many times, zoom in and out in and out, back and forth I think even the people on sight were getting dizzy from it.

      Thanks for taking the trouble to comment Harold.. You must remember these videos were simply a railfan recording trains for personal use.. Future publication was not even a remote consideration at the time of the original recording.. I simply share them now for what they are ....Railfan quality ....and make no apologies..They are what they are and If they annoy you so much just don't watch them..

    I was working for Conrail back then, ( still do but csx now ) and I remember a wreck in Utica, but if memory serves me right the train hit an old bath tub that had been put on the tracks, unless this was a different wreck. ???????

    • @jaywinn481
      @jaywinn481  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The official story was that a bunch of junk including a shopping cart
      was piled on the tracks. The train carried debris lodged under the lead
      locomotive for nearly a mile before hitting the crossover and throwing
      the switch under the locomotives causing the derailment. They had slowed
      considerably from the point of impact but it was not enough.

    How many millions in damages to RR property and cargo did this cost?

    • @jaywinn481
      @jaywinn481  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven't a clue.. The derailment took out a crossover, the switch off track 1 with some of the Utica yard lead, a few hundred feet of double track, all of the signals at CP237and there was some damage to track 2 as far west as CP 239. They had it cleaned up in a few days but never put back the signals or crossover. Both locomotives were repaired.

      I don't know but as wrecks go it was not a devastating one no fire no fatalities or injuries and a dozen containers of California wine.. see also answer below

    • @jaywinn481
      @jaywinn481  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The original incident took place about 2 miles to the west when the train hit debris piled on the track by kids. An old shopping cart became wedged under the lead locomotive and it was dragged until it picked a switch at the crossover in Utica

    Kids probably thoughthe train would just crush the stuff and continue on.Was anyone charged for the derailment? My great uncle's 4-8-4 freight locomotive crushed through stuff placed on the track.He never thought it was malicious. Just kids wanting to watch stuff get smashed.

    there's no way a shopping cart did that. I'm sorry you can't convince me of it. trains hit cars and run through tractor trailers all the time. conrail was was known for its poor maintenance especially after the government took it over

    • @jaywinn481
      @jaywinn481  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The train dragged the remnants of the shopping cart for over a mile under the lead locomotive and when the debris hit the leading switch at the crossover it caused the switch to open under the moving train.. That is how a shopping cart caused this wreck..
