    Great video!
    The Blue C32-8 is definitely a novelty in my book. I only remember them in the gray "Ballast Express" livery.

      @@robbierichmondtyrecop3916 just as a train would derail at 30 or 40 mph. broken/unstable track, heavy cars in the back and lightweight cars in the front, junction not properly switched, etc.

    I notice the flanges on the wheels of the bogies to the south of the derailed cars are rather small, the diameter of the wheels is not much less than the diameter of the flanges.

    You had good luck be able to hang around and film that long, I'm sure once a company dick showed up he'd have run you off.
    Great catch! It was rough for Conrail taking over all that deferred track maintenance.

    At 16.32 we see that one of the rails has lift from its plate and tie, rolled outwards; those old wooden ties with nails holding the rails down contribute to the derailment complexity.

    And nobody yet mentioned.... the car number on that Frisco boxcar ! SLSF #700000... What are the odds !? It was a beer hauling car, usually for Shlitz brewing, built in 1974. Sadly, that car was probably scrapped on site, after being dragged off the broken track. They rarely repair wrecked cars, instead writing them off in exchange for quickly repairing the track & opening the line back up.

    Wow, I never knew this happened. Quite a catch and luckily no one was hurt or killed. Wonder how long train service was suspended before rerailing that train?

      Train service wasn't suspended. Metro North was fortunate in that the northern most derailed freight car stopped just short of the interlocking plant. Train service was slowed as the trains ran by the scene at restricted speed. You can see the passing trains in the last quarter of the video.

    I would agree with you idea as to the cause, I also saw the way the 2 cars were sitting lucky timing you don't see this happen every day. Good views of it too, and getting to stay that close.

    Good thing there was a crew there checking the track so no one would derail.

      Amazing how fast they cleared the interlocking and allowed train traffic to continue. If this happened today, the railroad would probably be shut down for hours. The president of the RR flown in by helicopter, to meet with several managers at the scene to painstakingly determine if all is safe. After hours of deliberation, the railroad is reopened. An exaggeration, but you get the point.

    Great video, right place, right time, after that not so good, Always take note you have no idea what is in those derailed car's and after getting banged around like that if it is still safe.

      Just south of Beacon station on the Metro-North Hudson Line. The train was coming off the old New Haven line from Danbury CT.

      Oh, those are FL9s. Two axle lead truck, three axle rear truck. Dual mode electric/diesel. Btw, I remember watching one of your siren videos a few years back while researching the various sirens I remember as a kid. That is a unique channel you have there.

    Become CERT qualified, it can be found under FEMA, but it is also part of the Dept of Homeland Security. I've used mine just after hurricanes going out in winds of not more than 50 MPH checking for damages, noting hazards,. The local Sheriff stays away from me while I'm out working after anything hazardous has happened. I had a run in once and he was told to stay away from me or lose his badge. He's left me alone ever since, and we are good friends otherwise, but he was trying to assert his authority which got trumped.

    Man, talk about being in the right place at the right time! You shoulda bought a lottery ticket that day w/that kind of luck!! LOL I wouldn't have had the balls to get that close to the wrecked cars figuring railroad officials would be on the way. Nice job!

      I kind of tested the waters with that trainmaster in the blue shirt (at 8:24) who was the first one to inspect, if he didn't kick me out right then and there, I knew I could go deeper into the scene. You can hear me making the statement at 10:54 about being kicked out of there in a matter of time. I also knew it would be a while before any top brass showed up. I was ejected after getting just enough footage.
