This is absolutely true. Most guitar lessons are just exercises or licks. Which have their place of course. But so many lessons leave out the foundational stuff Steve teaches here. Vibrato, string bending, strumming and rhythm work, etc
Two of my favorite guitar players are Yngwie and Gary Moore. I agree they have one of the best vibratos I ever heard. In fact, Yngwie has always been accused of only playing fast, but many don't realize that he has one of the best vibrato rock playing on electric guitar. That brings an incredible feeling to his solos.
Yeah, many people think Yngwie is only a guy that plays fast, and even I get tired of too many of his notes. But he has a beautiful vibrato and guitar sound, two of the things that made him ahead of all his imitators.

A good practice technique... Play full albums in pitch darkness.. You will become your fretboard!... And my secret weapon...play along with really good singers. Play the vocal parts .your guitar will sing before you know it!
@@choun2749 forget the chords...i just throw them in for spice ..chord hand positioning will stress ya out n hamper movement...play each string seperate.pluck each note no strumming.play in the "local aria" n learn where the notes ya want are...go up n down and learn that local aria..eventually ya can go up or down n play things different arias..and just know where to go.try not to look at the neck too much.feel it by the sound where you are on the board.let it sing like a voice.bend to add spice and cover mistakes till ya get back where ya wanna be.later add some strumming and chords in later when ya start gettin it. Your a singer use those single notes to make her sing.take your favorite singers snd pkay what they are singing..then lster add in the guitar parts as you deem nessesary. Start with that! 😆 go to my channel n see my vidios i can pkay to anyrhing like that.happy huntin...

Like steve said in one of these videos, a poor foundation is not a good foundation. How can you expect to play smoothly at high speeds if your playing isn't smooth as very slow speeds
here is my personal idea.....for my lefthand vibrato My index finger is BB king ,middle finger is Steve Vai ( I love his little circle move), ring finger YNGWIE or Hendrix a more powerful vibrato and back to BB king on the ring finger

tim daugherty he does actually, in his technique video. I'm glad they're not making in-depth videos on their individual habits. You should want to learn ideas from them, not learn how to copy them. MusicisWin does a series called "habits of [x guitarist] and steve vai was the first. If you really want to get into his habits, then check out that video
I'm going to be honest here, these have so far been kind of...rudimentary, there hasn't been something that's actually been useful for me, for me personally stressing on that. Like I'm kind of tired of just basic lessons, would have loved to see something on fretboard visualization, composition, picking, scales and approaches to them, and scale breakdown and application based on specific song structures. But yeah what do I know.

Although it may seem basic, the sort of stuff Steve has covered in these lessons is what separates the greats from the rest.
Capt'n Shred if you were to peek in on any elite athlete, musician, etc you would find them focused on the basics much of the time.

Mick Taylor of the stones has one of the best ive heard. Also Freddy King, BB King Johnny Winter and any of the blues players are the masters.
