I've only just started taking this aspect of my playing seriously. You will be a rivalling TH-cam superpower one day Ben... And you must be stopped. If there's a swarm of harpies outside your house... I summoned them.
Yes I watch all your lessons Chris, you're a very good player but sometimes your vibrato is not perfect.. I see your progression and the difference ! Your vibrato is better ;) And now I know why, because you work it :p Ben maybe you can do a lesson for the bend ??? It's an important technique of the guitar playing, like the vibrato. Every one thinks about shredding and speed but forgive the basics...
OMG, I've been playing for over 30 years, and I like to think I'm a fairly good player. I massively struggled with my Vibrato in the beginning, and I got so frustrated learning what my teacher called "hand" vibrato, that I quit lessons, and invented my own hybrid of finger vibrato, and side-to-side vibrato. I have gotten pretty proficient at this bastardized technique, and I don't think anyone could really tell... but I could. When I would listen to the top players, sure, I could play almost anything I heard and practiced, but it never sounded as good as the person I was emulating. I knew all along it was my vibrato technique, but I never admitted it until a year ago. That's when I started watching countless video after video trying to learn the proper technique. This always resulted in me getting frustrated as hell, and going back to my old method. ... Until Now! (sorry to be dramatic, but it really was life changing. I mean I'm 48 and I've played for 33 years and I never felt 100% confident in my playing until I watched your video about an hour ago, and in just one hour, I have improved my technique a ton. Nobody explained it right, until I saw your video. Nothing against the other teachers, they're not stupid, and I'm not either. It's just when you've done something a certain way, the wrong way, for 33 years, it's extremely difficult to unlearn and relearn. The "door" analogy (specifically being half-open) just clicked with me. Thanks so much for the help. Thank God for TH-cam.
I never realized I was such a guitar submissive. However, you pointing out how much I suck feels warm and caring. I know you are just tearing me down to build me up again, so I feel safe. :-)
I watched 30 seconds of this video and decided you were the man to teach me the vibrato. You have acquired my whole faith in the span of your intro. I'm just another man who wants suddenly occurring explosions when I play.
Clear even vibrato is a crucial guitar skill. You’re the first TH-cam teacher that I’ve seen to offer this kind of lesson - how to hold your hand, what the vibrato motion should feel like, etc. Thank you! I think you’ve improved my technique immeasurably. I’ll let the other guys rip the fast-pick solos. I’m gonna be practicing my vibrato.
TheRightChoiceTV its not because they are shitty musicians, but rather because that entire band got complacent after becoming millionaires from the black album
I've never heard anyone bash Kirks playing until internet forums. Growing up with 80's Metallica I've always thought his solo's fit the songs perfectly and still do. He's written some iconic ones and even the ones where it's just bursts of flash and whammy pulls/dives complimented the song and was rarely overdone. The past 25 years he's seemed to phone it in but the direction Metallica took it's hard to put all the blame on him. Their worst album didn't even call for any. I know he was suffering injuries that effected his playing in the early 90's and I wonder if things got progressively worse. That along with not being inspired creatively and years going by without keeping your chops up(after the giant TBA tour Metallica didn't play near as much) has left Kirk a shadow of the player he was in his 20's. There was a time when it wasn't all wah trills for his live solo's.
Bro, I'm a newbie on guitar as I started playing like 2 months ago , but your videos got me going big time . It finally sounds like a guitar and not like a frog vomiting . Thank you !
Yeah..discovering this series has gotten through to me, where others haven't worked. Just a fantastic job, it must've taken a long time and a lot of work to do these. Really appreciated Sir, thank you!
Just for the record, these videos are all really good. Every time a question enters my head, you immediately answer exactly that question. It's almost creepy. Thanks for the uploads.
As long as I've been playing, I never stopped to perfect my vibrato or pinch harmonics...this can be seen on my latest YJM Evil Eye solo video, like hitting a brick wall on the vibrato. Glad I found your vids, they're cool and funny.
This is exactly the video I was looking for. I've been playing professionally for over 45 years. I tour, I have numerous albums out, but I always felt my vibrato was not what it should be, although it sounded "okay". I read an interview with Leslie West where he mentioned his technique was like jerking off (sorry, his words), but I couldn't figure out what he meant. I met a guy who studied with him, and he gave me a five minute lesson, but I still didn't really get it. This video covers the various methods. Mine was mainly a finger bend vibrato, which over a period of years was solid, but limited. The wrist method is, to me, VERY uncomfortable, but after a couple of days practicing it is getting better. The speed is not great, I can't get a decent 16th note vibrato and even triplets on a bend at 152 is dicey, but I'm thinking it will get better with practice. If anyone can answer this question, though, I'd appreciate it: I notice there is a good amount of pressure on my thumb. More when I'm bending a note, which makes sense, but even when I'm not - upward vibrato requires sold contact between the thumb and neck. Downward vibrato doesn't seem to need that. I saw a video of BB King going over his style, and his thumb isn't even on the neck! Not at all! So is this an indication that I'm not positioning my hand correctly, or is that just the way he, personally, played? I'd hate to be practicing a new technique the wrong way - especially at my (somewhat) advanced age. Since we're all in home quarantine at this point, it's a good time to fix up my techniques...
Another fine video, Mr. Eller. All those explosions in this video must have you running low on explosives. Have you considered trying clean burning propane? It's less wasteful and more efficient.
Very enlightening. I play more than 20 years ago and I always noticed that there's a problem with my vibrato, but now I could realize what I did wrong and how to make it better. Thank you!
"The string doesn't know" he said in his usual confident tone, immediately giving way to certain rumours being whispered amongst the good people of the township concerning Benjamin's insights into the secret lives of the strings.
Mikkel Jørgensen , yeah what happened next to the good people of the township? And how do they know Ben? Great comments to another great vid...chanted the priest in a moments lapse of concentration (sorry stole that from Sabbat)
Subscribed to Uncle Ben for less than a week and I can tell already that I made way more improvement than what I got from guitartricks online course LOL. Man, your teaching is very entertaining and captivating. Thank you very much 😄
I'm 64 old guy trying to learn to play for the last couple of years. Since I mainly play blues, I've been trying to get that proper bend and vibrato but couldn't grasp the concept.. You're the first one that I see that explains it in details. And like you said: It also needs practice. Thanks a lot. You've been a great help.
I think this is the only video I've watched where someone has made a successful juxtaposition between the singing abilities of Yoko Ono and Norah Jones.
i thought you were funny but when you did that cut away after the cousin joke you really put it over the top. you were really proud of yourself for that one. im really enjoying this series, good job
Thanks for the awesome videos Perhaps you might consider making a video for us red headed step kids who decided to take it upon ourselves to be self taught and in the process neglected to learn how to play chords. Mucho suckage there on my part fer sher. Peace out!
When I saw that hilarious beginning, I knew I had to watch the rest....because that's exactly how I vibrato..*hanging my head in shame*. Good stuff man, you've gained a new subscriber.
You kind sir just won a subscriber based of awesome humor xD Shreddus Maximus was genious. Love your combination of a really well considered method of teaching with great humor. I would really like to see some more complex solos with a mix of all techniques, have been missing stuff like that. You know 3 to 5 string sweep with alt and legato picked in between, and compliments of jazzy wierd scales :) Great Tidings from scandinavia :)
I just stumbled across your video and thought from the title you were going to be a complete tool. However, this is one of the most informative, well done guitar lessons I've seen on TH-cam. You are a natural teacher. Thanks for a great lesson that kept my attention all the way through! I've subscribed and given you my most sincere thumbs up.
Dear Uncle Ben, I've been goofing off with guitar for like, what... 14 years!? I've learned a metric boat-load of songs but only the chords. My timing is down pat and I have a lot of knowledge of chords. I just started practicing scales and am starting to dabble in music theory. I've always played on acoustic but after all the scale practice, I'm starting to think an electric guitar would be pretty sweet to play with. What can I do so I don't suck at guitar? I really want to be able to pick up an ax and just throw down a groovy lick. I got 3/5 of the shapes of the major scale down pretty good. How do I put it together to sound cool? Help me o'Ben Eller! You're my only hope!
god this video just changed my life. been playing for 5 years using the side to side vibrato because i could never get the wrist vibrato down. tried to watch some tutorials but i could never move my wrist the right way. tell me why i never thought about pulling the string *down* to do the "door hinge" movement until i watched your video. it's works perfectly now. thank you man
Dude... i have never seen anyone get to the smallest of details like you are in this video. My vibrato sucked... a lot. This video helped a lot. Thanks man. Keep up the good work.
I almost always do the wrist vibrato, but on the lower e-string I ALWAYS do side to side :) Works for me, because I played classical guitar for 5 years before switching to electric. Great video btw, and really helpful!
Apologies, Ben... I just went back and watched it AGAIN, and I WILL admit, between 11:00 and 13:00 you did give a pretty good description and demonstration of wrist vibrato.. BUT - That's TWO Minutes out of 27, in the video!... But again you DID at least give Something constructive, those two minutes, so I was a little too harsh, in my first comment... Keep doin' what you're doin', bro..
Learned this from Andy Aledort. Your lesson confirms his. Vibrato gives a goodness, a voice. It makes your guitar sing. Also great singers teach this. Without vibrato music sucks. Been listening to a lot of Steely Dan.
Ben Eller please? Keep up the no-bullshit teaching technique. One of your 20 minute videos gets me further than a week's practice because it reminds me that there's no excuse for sucking!
My dude you need to bring back this series. It's blunt and i think that's what guitarists need. None of this " maybe you should try this instead bullshit ". "This is why your playing sucks" is a kick in the pants, and I needed this lesson to boot.
Brilliant video Ben! I've watched numerous vibrato videos and none were this detailed and easy to follow. I can't wait to get home to try them out and master vibrato(s) once and for all! 😎🎸🤟 Thank you!
That could be part of the reason for sure. But even if I'm not using a pick, timing issues are still there, so I believe it's a more fundamental problem.
Loved the lesson, Laughed the whole time though had to went back several times to understand the lesson. You are awesome Uncle Ben, keep up the excellent work. This video is a must to watch every 3 months or så for all beginner/intermediate.
This video was really helpful. My vibrato wasn't too bad before I saw this, but I've been working on wrist vibrato for a month or two and I can hear I huge difference from what I was doing before.
"Wrist vibrato" is the technique I accidentally fell into when I was first learning guitar an eternity ago. Nobody taught me how to do it. I wasn't trying to emulate any particular player. It just felt natural, and it sounded good. Apparently it's "difficult"; who knew?!
i learned it by watching Eric Johnson videos, studying the mechanics of it, and practicing it until my wrist was so tired I couldn't move it any more.. getting the timing and smoothness down was the hardest for me.
You are such an amazing instructor, your analogy about the swinging door really helped me out. You deserve an Oscar for your cringy dad jokes too, your the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A few times in life you hear someone telling you clearly what happens and why. Was a half hour video an it seems to me like was 5 minutes video. Very helpful. Thanks man! :D
I never could understand why anyone attempts a violin type vibrato on a fretted guitar neck! It's absolutely useless! Get that string moving perpendicular to the frets up and down.
+Mr. Lowery Ummmm, thats not true at all. have you tried it? moving your finger between the frets is going to stretch the string different amounts depending on where your finger is between the frets. for the same reason that pushing down harder as you fret sharpens the note, when you move parallel to the string you the change the length of the sounding part of the string
Luke Lewis Guitarist It might be something to use when playing an unaccompanied guitar piece but unless you have a scalloped fret board the vibrato will be too subtle to be noticed in a mix. I've just seen too many players working the hell out of their fingers attempting to make that type of vibrato pronounced and in your face. All for not though and the standard rock/blues "rocking" the whole hand technique isn't that difficult to get down to where it is second nature when playing. It ends with better results and much less energy expended on that result.
+Madison Av A good vibrato will always sound pleasant to the ear and there is nothing worse to the ear than a bad one. Whatever technique is employed. My theory on the violin type of vibrato is the fact that the string is resting on the fret in front of the vibrato finger. The only changes in pitch will be from raising the tension of the string between the string and the fretboard. You can wiggle your finger horizontally as much as you like, but that movement is not causing the vibrato, the pushing down with varying pressure on the string is whats doing it. A lot of energy expended for a mild result.
The loud and annoying intro was a tad unnecessary. This whole Mom thing just isn't funny either. The content of the vid was very useful though. Thanks. BTW, I don't suck at guitar! :-) The side vibrato is really interesting. After a bit of practice I got it and really like the tone it produces.
mrbsred1 cheers thanks for watching all the same even if the humor isn't your thing. There's lots and lots of dry, dull (but informative) lessons on the web, so i don't strive to add another to the heap. Most people seem to dig it :) thanks man!
Ben Eller Hey, no problem mate. I didn't intend to be mean and I know what you're saying about dull tutorials. I'll be sure to watch more of your vids. That side vitarato technique is so cool. I've been playing for 10 years and never heard of that before. Strange, I know. All the best!
Yep, my Vibrato DOES suck ass but your youtube vid DOES NOT suck, 14 months into my guitar journey and Vibrato has been causing me issues so cheers fella from the UK!
Dude! bro! bro-ther! You've become the first person to make something dull into something fun. It takes a lot to keep me interested but your ability to make me laugh has me always checking out your videos. Thanks for everything bro-ther!
Fantastic lesson! I just revisited this one again today, and it is such a great lesson! The whole thing is excellent but the wrist vibrato section in particular is my favorite!! Keep the lessons coming Uncle Ben!
You're really a very good teacher, i play for about 9 years and i never thought that vibrato would be such an interesting subject about the guitar. I will surely work more on my vibratos, thanks uncle Ben :)
Pretty much spot on...except the bit about locking in a vibe frequency. Sometimes it's really a cool touch to accelerate or decelerate your vibrato on a long sustain, like Booker T kicking his Leslie speaker in and out on "Time is Tight" or "Green Onions."
Wow, excellent way of teaching the right way to do the vibrato and the common mistakes that we all make. Thank you so very much for effort to teach the right technique. Sincerely appreciate it.
This video single handedly made me rethink my approach to vibrato even five years later. Still, to this day, my vibrato needs fine tuning (specifically my wrist vibrato technique as someone with small hands), but it would've been far worse without your guidance here. IMO, mastering this, coupled with phrasing and pick attack, will determine your own signature playing style in the long run.
Hey Uncle Ben,thank you for sharing your knowledge ! Your videos are probably the most pedagogic i've seen about guitar. Thank you also for your caustic humour, deeply appreciated . Keep them coming! TY!
DUDE!! 1st, thank you for the great humor, its eclectic and very funny. I'm going to have to stop using the alphabet on my wife for a little while. I know I'll just keep laughing every time I use it. 2nd, thank you for a very informative video and well thought out and explained correctly. I hear so many players using the really fast, almost like a trill, type of vibrato. They end up sounding like the screeching screams of the Nazgùl, or Black Riders, in Lord of the Rings. Got yourself another subscriber, thanks again.
I'm pleased I have perfect vibrato after watching this video. I don't even know how I do. ALSO your dialogues are getting better. Laughed so many times!
Dude, i just started the video and laughed so hard just by seeing you face expressions! You have got a good sense of humour and of course, you are a kick class guitar player!!
I suck at improvising and at combining minor and major scales together (say in blues) and keeping the flow - it's all just random licks I picked up, without any deeper sense. I have only several ideas that I just mindlessly combine and repeat over and over again, getting on my own nerves. btw you suck at providing enough of your otherwise great and helpful videos. You've been of great help so far.
Your straight faced humor and innuendos had me laughing out loud. Great lesson, I will be watching more. Thank you..
Robert Martin thanks Robert!!
+Robert Martin "You're moms favourite, side to side vibrato" *stoneface*
He doesn't smile or laugh at his own jokes, which sells his jokes! LMAO! I love this guy!
“From the shrieking wail of yoko ono”
I may not shred, but my vibrato makes the ladies melt.
No joke, it's all about the vibrato. A good vibrato can make one note ring beautifully!
Same
🥴
It doesn't rhyme dude....
@@herpesfreesince0386 I may not shred, but my vibrato makes the ladies dead.

this is exactly what I think!!
“A guitar submissive” that’s an interesting phrase😭
Dude!!!. I've just started playing and I could not figure this out for the life of me. You've just made it absolutely clear. Thank you so much.
Happy to help! Have fun!
Amazing lesson and hilarious to boot. "Clowns who hit trash cans in Slipknot".
I'm literally crying laughing watching this part now. ben is a savage
Watching these videos for entertainment almost as much as the actual lessons. The sweep picking lesson was awesome. Thanks Dude.
haha awesome, thank you!
I watched 30 seconds of this video and decided you were the man to teach me the vibrato. You have acquired my whole faith in the span of your intro. I'm just another man who wants suddenly occurring explosions when I play.

I almost always do the wrist vibrato, but on the lower e-string I ALWAYS do side to side :) Works for me, because I played classical guitar for 5 years before switching to electric. Great video btw, and really helpful!
Tomas Nyholm thanks so much for watching and commenting!
92 Kirk Hammett fans checked in to this video.
That guy's vibrato sucks!
haha I've heard some people ripping on Kirk's "bad" vibrato, but I've never noticed it. So it's really a thing?
His vibrato on the Disposable Heroes solo was amazing.
dt scork That's why I love Marty Friedman
Apologies, Ben... I just went back and watched it AGAIN, and I WILL admit, between 11:00 and 13:00 you did give a pretty good description and demonstration of wrist vibrato.. BUT - That's TWO Minutes out of 27, in the video!... But again you DID at least give Something constructive, those two minutes, so I was a little too harsh, in my first comment...
Keep doin' what you're doin', bro..
Haha thanks for watching again!!! I’m sure I’ll talk more vibrato in the near future, it’s mad important!
Damn, you forgot to mention BB King at wrist vibrato!
Damn, true story!!!!
Because his vibrato is atrocious
@@Quantumface begone troll
Learned this from Andy Aledort. Your lesson confirms his. Vibrato gives a goodness, a voice. It makes your guitar sing. Also great singers teach this. Without vibrato music sucks. Been listening to a lot of Steely Dan.
Stan Lindert aaaaaaah yes, good choice on some Steely! Listen to the band The Reign of Kindo, they're like a modern Steely Dan.
I need a "your right hand thrash rhythm technique sucks". like, now.
maikol as soon as you start being sweet :)
how
Ben Eller please?
Keep up the no-bullshit teaching technique. One of your 20 minute videos gets me further than a week's practice because it reminds me that there's no excuse for sucking!
Ben Eller I’m having issues with my down vibrato. For example, if I down vibrato my G string, I accidentally hammer on my b string.
You and Chris Zoupa are hands down the best guitar teachers on youtube.
Denver Williams that Australian bastard!!!! hahaha love Chris to death. I will be doing a guest solo on his upcoming album, keep an ear out!
great lesson, how about a downpicking lesson
thanks Bear, good call!
My dude you need to bring back this series. It's blunt and i think that's what guitarists need. None of this " maybe you should try this instead bullshit ". "This is why your playing sucks" is a kick in the pants, and I needed this lesson to boot.
KIRK HAMMETT SHOULD WATCH THIS!
Bahadır Aksoy lol i wasn't gonna say it!
Bahadır Aksoy 149 Kirk Hammett & Lars Ulrich so far
Brilliant video Ben! I've watched numerous vibrato videos and none were this detailed and easy to follow. I can't wait to get home to try them out and master vibrato(s) once and for all! 😎🎸🤟 Thank you!
Its like my wrist has the inability to move like a door hinge :(
great vid, but, I struggle with vibrato on string bends. any tips ????????????
aaaaah classic problem! i will do a bends video. Or you can always hit me up for affordable Skype lessons in the meantime :)
EXCELLENT description of the wrist vibrato technique. Thank you so much.
hm. i didnt realize this video was supposed to be a bra.. back to seriousness, could you please do a video called "your timing sucks"
oldGnRrocks1 good call! thanks for watching!
Andie Harper cool story
Yes please! Timing is what I struggle with the most as a musician!
That could be part of the reason for sure. But even if I'm not using a pick, timing issues are still there, so I believe it's a more fundamental problem.
just commenting to say how much i love your profile picture. DT is amazing
Loved the lesson, Laughed the whole time though had to went back several times to understand the lesson. You are awesome Uncle Ben, keep up the excellent work.
This video is a must to watch every 3 months or så for all beginner/intermediate.
When you rewatch his videos because of how damn funny they are
This video was really helpful. My vibrato wasn't too bad before I saw this, but I've been working on wrist vibrato for a month or two and I can hear I huge difference from what I was doing before.
weird I've always found wrist vibrato to be extremely natural since it's pretty much fulcrum physics
thedudeperson same same. I play the cello though so that may have affected my preference for wrist vibrato.
"Wrist vibrato" is the technique I accidentally fell into when I was first learning guitar an eternity ago. Nobody taught me how to do it. I wasn't trying to emulate any particular player. It just felt natural, and it sounded good. Apparently it's "difficult"; who knew?!
i learned it by watching Eric Johnson videos, studying the mechanics of it, and practicing it until my wrist was so tired I couldn't move it any more..
getting the timing and smoothness down was the hardest for me.
superb tuition, Ben! Wife heard me practise your technique and she chucked all her batteries out. Thanks for the excellent tips!
Uncle Ben's boil in bag rice.
You are such an amazing instructor, your analogy about the swinging door really helped me out. You deserve an Oscar for your cringy dad jokes too, your the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That circular vibrato is actually called Vaibrato because Steve Vai used it a lot. All throughout his career.
A few times in life you hear someone telling you clearly what happens and why. Was a half hour video an it seems to me like was 5 minutes video. Very helpful. Thanks man! :D
alot of us are actually good at side to side vibrato for some reason... lol XD
hahaha i can't imagine why!
Ben Eller can't wait for the "your amp settings/ pedal gears suck" episode btw!
Looking forward to more videos! Its the little pointers across your vids which will stick with me forever now! Thanks heaps mate!
Brad Butler sick, thank YOU!
I hope kirk hammet watched this.
Is his vibrato bas
+D TKD bad
+D TKD just watch Kirk doing solo takes in the studio. It's really amateur.
Love these lessons ... great humor thrown in between informative education..keep 'em up!
+Mr. Lowery but what about classical guitar? horizontal vibrato is nessecary due to the nylon strings lack of bendage
bartworth howitzer It is a classical technique. I was being specific to the electric guitar. Should have said that to make myself a bit more clear.
Brilliant vid as always. Loving the side comments Ben.
Keep up the good work.
All the best!
mrbsred1 thanks for watching man, cheers!
This is the best guitar series I have ever seen. Thanks, Ben! You're my hero!
Wow, excellent way of teaching the right way to do the vibrato and the common mistakes that we all make. Thank you so very much for effort to teach the right technique. Sincerely appreciate it.
Congrats on being one of my only subscriptions! Love everything about your videos. Keep em comin.
cheers, thank YOU! and hit me up for Skype lessons!
This was one of the funniest guitar lessons I've seen. Helpful and hilarious. Awesome tutorial man!
+1 on the Stevie Nicks line, lol. Best description on TH-cam for wrist vibrato. Thanks for vid, Ben!
you had me at "you can sweep faster than Yngwie's maid." Brilliant vid! Thank you.
Hey Uncle Ben,thank you for sharing your knowledge ! Your videos are probably the most pedagogic i've seen about guitar.
Thank you also for your caustic humour, deeply appreciated . Keep them coming! TY!
I was teaching my little brother this concept, great video series guy.
Best vibrato video I've seen on youtube. This has really helped me get through all my Jerry Cantrell/Alice In Chains stuff.
I'm pleased I have perfect vibrato after watching this video. I don't even know how I do.
ALSO your dialogues are getting better. Laughed so many times!
A great way to explain technique. Entertaining but informative :) A great teacher is Ben.
Darren Franklin thanks for watching, Darren!
The beginning of this video is so funny, that's one of my biggest pet peeves actually. Awesome video as always
thanks Thomas!
I really like this video. Very helpful for myself to analyze my own vibrato. Too bad a few people complain about something useful and free.
you have some very useful techniques. I find your material very influential and informative. I love it
Great breakdown of technique with fantastic analogies to explain the execution. Thanks Ben
