The 105mm AVRE was quite a rare beast. The issue was that - or so it was felt - the armoured units we supported couldn’t guarantee to provide close support to armoured engineer assets, particularly our AVLB bridgelayers after the bridge was laid. The solution was - in the mid 1980s - to provide 32 Armoured Engineer Regiment with a few Centurion 105mm ‘gun tanks’ for the close support role. We didn’t refer to them as AVRE as that term was reserved for the Centurions with the 165mm demolition gun. It made a kind of sense as the regiment already had Cent AVRE so there was some commonality both in the maintenance and driving. I’m not sure how long they were kept, as I left BAOR not long after. IIRC by the time of Gulf War 1 the gun tanks had been withdrawn although the AVRE were retained, although they apparently had an issue keeping up with Challenger and thus didn’t last much longer themselves.
It's vitally important information to know, particularly in a day and age when even our 'weather guess' services refer to any wind stronger than a mouse fart, as being a 'storm'.
