In 1975, it didn’t get any better matchup wise than Bert Jones vs Joe Ferguson. The Bills won this one. Buffalo took a big lead in the rematch then the Colts exploded on them. Jones and Ferguson were both 3rd year QBs. Jones was a phenom but Ferguson was a great athlete as well. Both made the pro bowl in 1975. The Bills faded because of defensive injuries. Fergusons rapid development meant that the Bills should’ve built the team around him but they didn’t. Lou Saban quit , Fergy got hurt in 76 . He had 9 TDs and 1 INT when he was done for the year. Chuck Knox got rid of OJ and he built the offense around JF starting in 1978. JF had a great run from 1980-83 where he was a top 10 QB in the league. Bert Jones had a great 3 year run from 1975-77 before injuries killed his career. From the 1975 perspective, these might have been the successors to the Tarkentons and the Staubachs as the best signal callers in the game. Because of circumstances unfortunately neither man got to that place
Lydall Mitchell also seemed to have a big day against the bills. Did you see the the tunnel the players had to enter and exit and the end of the game. Just try to talk today's players thru it.
