    Beautiful horn. I make powder horns sometimes and I use wooden dowels to secure the bottom plug to the horn. Just in case the horn catches a spark I won't be wearing a grenade, the metal pins have tendency to hold the plug and never use glue to secure the plug, I use wax to seal the plug for air tightness.

      To use wax is a very nice idea and it seems logic to fix the endplate with wooden nail. With every comment I learn something more . Thank you Ferd.

    I told you a powder flask would be a project that you could make shine ! Cant wait to see whats next

    That's beautiful work. I've been making horns since the 70's but I've never tried a flat flask? I may give it a try. Thanks.
    One comment I have is; you put a LOT more faith in Super Glue than I ever would!!
    God bless:

      Oh this super glue is so hard that I rather break the material before breaking the seam. Otherwise I mostly use JB weld , thats awesome too. 😊😊

    This is the priming horn, correct? Will you make a larger horn for the main charge or will you do individual powder charges "12 apostles" bandolier?

    • @homemadehistory7537
      @homemadehistory7537  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      A bandolier will be a nice project as well.... A bigger powder horn is on the plan but I think I will make a French indian war style horn later on. This project was only to get some distance from the wheellock build and collect some ideas. And it was a good test peace to test scrimshaw for the wheellock pistol. Maybe I will do a wallet for flints and tools......

    Masterful and a masterwork that comes off the bench looking las if it was already 400 years old. So often regretfully omitted, the screw-in plug an inestimable aid to filling (and I was previously only aware of such at the base end.) The final flourish the integral suspension system of horn: a scrupulous nod to period look and authenticity.
    A true value-added product.

    • @homemadehistory7537
      @homemadehistory7537  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The masterpeace for this one was a priming horn from schotland from 1750. The woven band patterns are soooooo nice made. The only thing that was not good was, that I used brass nails to fit the end cap. Normaly hooden nails are better if the horn blew up just the end get off. Some time ago I saw a flt horn for main powder charge with two screws at the end and wondred why. Now I knew ...... One was for refilling and behind the other is a pipe to carry the round balls.... How about making your own? Just heat the horn in boiling water then put a peace of plank in and flatn it in the vise. 😁😁

    That looks really nice, the good thing about using all natural materials is that it is undisguisable from one that is 200 years old. You will find that High Speed lathe tools are much better for most materials you use, you can grind them to the cutter shape you need for each job, unlike the tipped tools, which never have a very sharp cutting edge.

    • @homemadehistory7537
      @homemadehistory7537  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Horn, antler and bone are such nice materials to work with and it looks perfectly with some polishing. To use HSS tools is a good idea. Secialy the grinding is much better like you said. To regrind the hard metal tiped tools is nearly imposible without diamond tools.

      @@homemadehistory7537 that would be pretty cool, I would love to buy a flask like that from you, I love your work and the attention to detail you put into everything you do. You should sell your creations, you could make a good side income from the things you do, I guarantee it!

      @@aaronschmidt169 That will be a nice idea but I live in germany and most customers will be in US. Only the shipping for such a smal item is 55$ and there are very strikt rules what is posible to send. NO animal products ;-( I would love to sell but not easy and very expensive. So I share my videos and maybe someone is inspired and start a project.......
