I LOVE that you do these videos. Keep up the good work! Too many people didn't grow up poor, or never had to learn how to make do so they look down on things without trying it. Hotdogs, smoked sausage, lunch meat, or left over meat all have the potential to make amazing casseroles.
I grew up poor, but US poor food is super processed and unhealthy man. You guys need more access to cheap wholesome meats, fish and veg, but I get that the US doesn't have a market system for the poor where it basically has it's own economy scale. Something ain't right when the poor is forced on processed salt/fat bombs in cans, where I live people in a rough patch just eat less meats/fish, and load up on carbs n veg. Not saying this stuff is bad or anything, I would chow down on that easy, but you need a balance.
My parents entered a Toyota Challenge in our town for charity. They won. Everyone was invited back to some guys house for a BBQ- they ALL had steaks. We brought our Tube Steaks! 😁
Honestly that sounds much better than this. I have nothing against this. It's like a lot of things I've eaten. It just doesn't appeal to me. I wonder if a plant based chili would be any good. I'd prefer normal meat chili but I was given a plant based chili pack. Well except I left it with my friend so he'd have 2. Bills are currently tighter for him than me. So I tend to leave extra food from my food bank haul. We go together because first we enjoy it & second he's visually impaired. But without him I'd never get the energy to get there much.
Dang, American baked beans look very different from British ones! Our dirt cheap standard (some might say CLASSIC) baked beans come in a tomatoey sauce, and are a very distinctive orange! We have Green Giant here, but I don't think they've ever done baked beans. I'm sorry they weren't very good. This looks amazing, and I would definitely love to attempt a version of this!
Actually Pork n Beans are pretty similar to Heinz Baked Beans. I’m American, but I will put American Baked Beans on Toast because although sweet, there are hints of tomato sauce and we use “streaky bacon” in the beans as well
Baked beans in the US are typically a lot different to what we have in the UK, theirs are often a lot sweeter (more sugar in the sauces) and of course have more flavour varieties, versus the typical beans in tomato sauce as sold here under pretty much every brand name there is... :) (not that it matters, personally I can't stand beans!!!)

☝ SUGGESTION: Before adding the beans, fry up the hot dog bits to render out some of the fat. It will add more flavor to the beans. It's what I do when making my simple chili and rice meal (2 ballpark all beef franks diced and fried, 1 can of Hormel chili with beans, and 1 bag of Success boil-in-bag rice) that makes about 3 meals for me.
@@Joe_Goofball Yeah, Wolf's pretty good too, and often cheaper than Hormel. I typically make double-batches (4 Ballpark beef franks, 2 bags of Success rice, and 2 cans of chili) and rotate 4 versions. One uses 2 cans Hormel, one uses 2 cans Wolf, the third uses 1 Can Hormel with 1 Can Wolf, and for the 4th version instead of chili I use Bush's BBQ flavored Baked Beans. That's 24 filling meals during the month for about $30 ($1.25/meal) on average. It's less if I hunt for the "bulk" (multi-can/multi-package) deals that cost less than buying individual ones. I used to just separate and freeze the franks into ziplocks (4 in each sandwich bag and folded in half to keep from freezing all 4 together) and just pull out 2 or 4 the day before to thaw out so I can cut and cook them the next night. I was mainly doing it so I had the option to just throw them on some bread to make basic hotdogs with ketchup, relish, and a side of chips instead of cooking them as part of the chili & rice meal. Then finally I kinda got the bright idea to dice up half the beef franks first before portioning, bagging, and freezing. That way I can just toss them straight in to the pot to fry them up for the chili & rice without wasting a day to thaw first.

LOL The same thing would happen when I had fried bologna sandwiches too! Don't let any naysayers try to bring you down. You just keep putting out the content YOU want! Lot's of us love it!
If we had buns for our burgers my mother would use half a bun, put a burger on it and bake/broil it and call it an open faced burger. She would also buy cheese ends the market would sell from the deli, could be swiss, american, gouda or anything else to make mac and cheese w/ hot dogs or hamburger meat. I don't think I ever had a chicken breast until I moved out at 19 it was always leg quarters. So many recipes I remember that I haven't had since I moved out. Family of 6 w/ 2 working parents. Lots of PJs, powdered milk and generic white/black boxes of cereal/food. I'm 60 and she fed us every night on about $5.00. McDonalds or Burger King once a month and a bill of less than $12.00.
Fried bologna sandwiches were a treat when I was a kid. The few times my Dad had to cook, he would dice up a couple of hot dogs, fry them and add eggs and scramble then cheese on top. Yum!
I grew up on bologna sandwhiches and still love to have them as a snack.❤👍The other crazy thing was tuna casserole made with a bag of potato chips and a can of mushroom soup. My comfort food. My daughter thinks I'm crazy.
I remember we would put Lay's potato chips in our bologna sandwiches! Lol My mom made her own sauce for tuna casserole, chop up bread cubes and top with potato chips.
I grew up financially less stable as well but In the city, it's amazing how many childhood inexpensive foods we have in common. I love your videos and recipes keep it up.
When you do the chill its great to swap the tots for either tortilla chips or best is "Frito Corn Chips", I think I like it this way even better then my kids...lol
For our last family reunion, I made a big pot of beans with hamburger, hotdogs, bacon, onions, peppers and seasoning. It was a big hit! Everyone loves this kind of stuff!
Hello Wolf Pit - - I have not seen all your videos but may I add a recipe for you to try? - - Take cooked noodles (Like elbows, shell or spirals, something 3D - - Just not flat) grease your casserole dish and pour in the noodles ... Cut your hot dogs like you did in this video and add to the noodles, sprinkle chopped up Velveta cheese over everything, and finally pour a tomato/pizza/your choice of sauce all over and then heat up in the oven at 350F ... quick and fast and tastes pretty good too ... Have a nice day and thanks for the recipes ...
This is fascinating to me because of how different US struggle meals are to the ones I grew up on in Germany. Meat in general is probably the most expensive food over here so we had lots of salads, roasted veggies or stews and occasionally "fancy" stuff like oven pizzas or spaghetti with tomato sauce. If there was meat it was mostly trout or pork chops. And it all depended on what was in season. I think the amount of sodium in a redneck casserole could have straight up killed me as a kid but I probably would have taken that risk after weeks of having nothing but vegetables.
I don’t like to really harp on the American stereotype of being fat. But the cheapness of meat and sugar is one of the reasons why you see poor people at such heavy weight.
We ate a lot of veggies when I grew up from moms very tiny garden. I lived on an island and so we fished and and seined for shrimp. Potted meat sandwiches and bologna were lunches for school. Greens from her garden probably saved us, really. I didn't kniw we were poor.😂❤
We don't really have tater tots over here in the UK, but I imagine we could use hash browns instead? Actually that gives me an idea, perhaps I'm going to make a cottage pie and use hash browns and cheese instead of mashed potato. I reckon that will be awesome.
Actually just made this for dinner myself recently, and Walmart has these mini corn dogs you find in the freezer isle that work excellent for this dish! Those, beans and cheese, you won't regret it; super recommend you give it a try!
I love fried bologna. It's delicious with scrambled eggs, it makes a grilled cheese sandwich special, and a fried bologna sandwich on a bun with lettuce and tomato is great anytime of the year.
Frank and beans are a classic dish that my family use to make. About 30 years ago (freshman year in college), I made a big pot of frank and beans with several BBQ sauces mixed in to a party with a bunch of Pacific Islanders. That pot disappeared in no time flat 😮
@@trippNfallN2 - I didn't. Rice is always a default dish that will be at party with a bunch of Pacific Islanders. They most definitely ate the frank and beans with the rice though.
My Dad was from Germany and came from a poor family. He did something similar to what you just did. He used four cans of Camps Pork and Beans and chicken thighs. He would get a casserole dish and pour the beans into the dish and lay the chicken thighs on top cook in the oven at 350 for an hour. the chicken came out crispy and the meat fell off the bone. The thighs had the flat bone still on them unlike today. It was a hardy meal and very cheap. And as you said you can add anything you want to the pot. My father was all about using up whatever was left in the pantry. Chicken soup was another dish he would do and anything that had to be used was thrown into the pot to make the soup. Every vegetable you could think of was in the soup pot, so it wouldn't go to waste.
Edit: LOL i had almost forgotten the legendary blade, the mighty Plastisu! I also wanna say I appreciate you trying different brands. Maybe someone watching only has a limited selection or live in another part of the world? Learning how to substitute certain foods with others or a different form of the same food, is one of the best skills when it comes to cooking your own food. Knowing that you can substitute a can of baked beans with a can of pinto beans and some spices, or different kinds of cheese etc
One of the best TH-cam recommendations I've had in a while. This speaks to me growing up. Simple, honest, and from the heart. Might not be gourmet but it'll get ya where you need to get.
Australian here, and this is the same thing we eat. We had hotdogs twice this week, with beans and white bread. Last night we cooked a kg of mixed veg from a bag, beef mince, and potatoes.
I so agree with pre-baking the tater tots. This looks so good. When I was a kid, we just ate the beans and franks (and enjoyed them), so this is a fancy version that looks good.
I love a toasted BLT. Thick cut Bologna, lettuce and tomato on toasted white bread. Soooo tasty!!!!!!!! (thin slices of onion horsey sauce dill pickle for good measure... dang You have me craving. Love Your channel
I always knew this is hot dog hot dish. I'm not for Minnesota I'm from Virginia. I've also heard it called tater tot casserole. Either way it's good but it's got to be bushes baked beans.
Didn’t have a lot of money growing up and I can remember my grandmother adding dumplings to a pot of green beans and a pot of boiled potatoes. I didn’t realize she was stretching the food when company showed up. I still miss that food.
This looks great, and I can definitely see some ways to vary it. If you get some pork on sale, or have some leftover from a roast, that would be a good substitute/addition to the hot dogs. I might also mix in a can of corn. No matter how you fix it, that combination of beans, tater tots and cheese is going to make this a seriously filling dish!
Absolutely love it! This is the kind of food I used to eat when I was low on income, even cheaper stuff. For some strange reason, I still like to make it today. Liked and subscribed!
Hell yeah! I still remember finding you because of your first redneck casserole recipe. I make that dish every couple months or so, and it is one of my go-to cheap eats. Delicious, and real stick to your ribs food! Personally, being from western New York, home of the Garbage Plate, we have what we call white hots. Hot dogs that are unsalted and uncured and appear sort of white in color. I typically Iike adding a little diced onion and/or bacon in mine, and maybe toss the bean and hot dog mixture in BBQ sauce, if I'm feel fancy. No microwave for me though, all done on the stove top giving the hot dogs a nice sear.
As a fellow working class white person who's parents were also working class I very much appreciate and enjoy these videos. My mother still makes tater-tot casserole to this day.
Every person that I know that has been called a "redneck" was actually very smart. Especially when it comes to living on a budget. That casserole looks amazing. And you were right. Some onions would have added some more nutrition to the dish. Sauteing them would make them blend in with the beans, I think. And some sauteed peppers would look great on top.
My parents were union workers & I was an only child. I had my own bedroom & bathroom & never went without until my dad died of cancer when I was 23. That was a few decades ago, so I've learned a lot. 😅😅
I grew up in a single parent home. Mom worked 2 jobs to put a roof over our heads and food on the table. So I know exactly what you mean. We made due with what we had. I still make meals like this because it's the food I grew up with and I still love it. Tks for sharing this. Eat up and enjoy. 🤜
Don't know if you own a George Foreman Grill, but there's a ton of stuff you can make on them. Literally completely cooks a grilled cheese or any sliced meat and cheese in under a minute, 90 seconds at most. Quesadillas are my daughter's favorite, also around a minute. Saves money, time on dishes, and no added grease or butter unless you want to. Been doing it for 10+ years. BONUS: Its the same amount of food, but because its flatter, you can trick picky kids into eating more😂😂😂
@@octoscorpion2506 I've got 2 thrift store spares under the sink lol. May I also just as highly (if not higher) recommend the Pizzazz Pizza Oven. You can literally make almost anything on it. Fries, nuggets, etc. BEST feature is that since it's not in an actual oven, you can simply remove your food as it gets to your liking. For instance, my daughter likes soft garlic bread while my son likes crunchy. No oven door or worries about letting heat out. Just Google a picture and you'll get the idea. And while the pan does get hot, it's nothing close to a burner. Used them for almost 20 years. My 14 & 19 year old kids have never been hurt.
I really enjoy your channel. I grew up eating similar food. We ate a lot of onions potatoes and cheap ground beef. When my Dad worked steady it was hamburger helper every night.
Looks good. We only have green giant corn here in Norway, didn't even know they made other things. My suggestion for you, especially when it comes to your soups, is adding boiled eggs to them. Almost any soup gets much, much better with it and it's a cheap and good source for protein. Also when it comes to creamed soups that are a bit heavy, I suggest also using some lemon juice when serving it. This freshen up any heavy soup to the extreme, my favourite is cauliflower soup, creamed, and with some lemon juice it's an explosion if deliciousness in your mouth.

Now do this exact recipe but substitute chili for the baked beans and your life will be forever changed by the deliciousness that you stuff down your gullet
I was going to say my hubby doesn't like baked beans, but I could use chili. Thanks I need these recipes right now. It's a no spend eat out of the pantry couple of months.
Doing a pantry, fridge and freezer challenge myself. Trying to do as little shopping as possible. Problem is you can't help but restock certain foods like milk so that's where the temptation of "let's see if they got anything new here" always hits and you wind up going home with a full trunk instead of a half bag.
Oooh yum! I grew up poor too. We had lots of toss in the pot dishes like a hamburger rice casserole. Lots of seasonings. My mom never thought of this one.
I’ve made similar, but called it redneck poutine. Cooked Tater tots on the bottom, bush’s maple beans, Costco beef wieners and then topped off with the cheese. Unbelievably delicious!!
The highlight of my week was going with my great uncle to the automate. There I would get a crock with franks and beans. It doesn’t matter if your a red neck, what matters is invisible to the eye. Thanks 💚✌🏽
That sounds good man ! You brought back some memories. I grew up poor in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains of Central, KY. My cousin Rick and I MANY times..ate what we hunted or fished for for dinner. But, some of our regular snacks were Sardines & Crackers and Potted Meat or Vienna ( pronounced where I came from as VI - ENNYS ) and crackers. In season we'd scrounge up some "Dry - Land Fish" which were actually Morel Mushrooms that you rolled in seasoned corn meal and flour and deep fried in bacon fat....and they actually kinda tasted like fish ! But my favorite...there was a small general store about a mile from my house and me and cousin Rick would walk the road searching the ditch line for empty returnable bottles folks had just carelessly threw in the ditch line. When we'd collected enough of "em...we'd head to the general store for our favorite snacks. An RC Cola, A Pickled Bologna, a 25 cent pack of "Tom's Salted Peanuts" and a "Strawberry Shortcake" Ice Cream Pop for dessert ! Bet you've done this....we'd open the peanuts and the RC and dump the peanuts into the RC, hold the top and shake it up and wait for the carbonation to stop, and between bites of Pickled Bologna, you drink the RC and eat the peanuts....I miss those days !
This looks very tasty AND quick & easy to put together. I bet it would be good with some chili beans too. Thanks for sharing the recipe and making the video! 😊💖🙏

Lots of PJs, powdered milk and generic white/black boxes of cereal/food. I'm 60 and she fed us every night on about $5.00. McDonalds or Burger King once a month and a bill of less than $12.00.
I brown bagged fried hot dog sandwiches to school too.
Fried bologna sandwiches were a treat when I was a kid. The few times my Dad had to cook, he would dice up a couple of hot dogs, fry them and add eggs and scramble then cheese on top. Yum!
I still eat all of those to this day! :)
I grew up on bologna sandwhiches and still love to have them as a snack.❤👍The other crazy thing was tuna casserole made with a bag of potato chips and a can of mushroom soup. My comfort food. My daughter thinks I'm crazy.
we hsd the same casserole still crave i
I remember we would put Lay's potato chips in our bologna sandwiches! Lol
My mom made her own sauce for tuna casserole, chop up bread cubes and top with potato chips.
I think.you grew up.in my house....😮
I remember that tuna casserole. You had to get thru Lent somehow. The potato chips made it edible.
Definitely a great recipe and one of my favorite meals growing up! Man my momma did it with kielbasa and it was the best thing yet
There's absolutely nothing wrong with eating humble meals and there are some great ideas here.
I grew up financially less stable as well but In the city, it's amazing how many childhood inexpensive foods we have in common. I love your videos and recipes keep it up.
This looks very good. Pork & Beans with hot dogs is staple food for me even in good times. I can see this working great with chili for sure.
When you do the chill its great to swap the tots for either tortilla chips or best is "Frito Corn Chips", I think I like it this way even better then my kids...lol
I sometimes add a bit of no-bean chili to my spaghetti soup. Gives it a bit more 'kick'! 😊👍
I love pork and beans and hot dogs.. ate em a lot when I was a kid and still do...
Bet you can lift a car though with those veggies , and you’ll live to 100 😂
Yummy
dominicesquivel3901, where is this cheap meat that you speak of?
We ate a lot of veggies when I grew up from moms very tiny garden. I lived on an island and so we fished and and seined for shrimp. Potted meat sandwiches and bologna were lunches for school. Greens from her garden probably saved us, really. I didn't kniw we were poor.😂❤
We don't really have tater tots over here in the UK, but I imagine we could use hash browns instead?
Actually that gives me an idea, perhaps I'm going to make a cottage pie and use hash browns and cheese instead of mashed potato.
I reckon that will be awesome.
Sounds great!
No tater tots, you poor repressed soul. 😢
Mr,Wolfe pit. We all appreciate the Red Neck hot dish!! Keep up the awesome work 👌
I appreciate it
Mr,Wolfe pit. The videos 📹 are sweet!! Keep on plugging away!!
YES!!! Surely you made Calrose Rice to go with it...🤣😋
@@trippNfallN2 - I didn't.
That sounds delicious!
Good ole country food that will stick to your ribs and warm your insides up is my style of a good meal!
Its amazing how close your fingers match those hot dogs! Was hoping you weren't going to start slicing them too! Love your channel!!
Love it Larry, takes me back to college days👍🏼🍻✌🏼🇺🇸🎅
The fit of that final tater tot in the pan was so satisfying
SB ............when I make a tater tot casserole ..........stand um up !!!!
Yep! That's how we ate & was glad to have it!
Australian here, and this is the same thing we eat. We had hotdogs twice this week, with beans and white bread. Last night we cooked a kg of mixed veg from a bag, beef mince, and potatoes.
I haven't had this since I was a kid. That was like 20yrs ago. I'm making this next time now 😁
Great video. I so much enjoyed your presentation. Thank you. Look forward toward many more.
I so agree with pre-baking the tater tots. This looks so good. When I was a kid, we just ate the beans and franks (and enjoyed them), so this is a fancy version that looks good.
Imagination is your best tool! Love that. The joy of cooking!
And with a little tubing and a DIY gasometer, you can use this to supplement your heating bill in the winter... :P
😂
I love a toasted BLT. Thick cut Bologna, lettuce and tomato on toasted white bread. Soooo tasty!!!!!!!! (thin slices of onion horsey sauce dill pickle for good measure... dang You have me craving.
Love Your channel
I always knew this is hot dog hot dish. I'm not for Minnesota I'm from Virginia. I've also heard it called tater tot casserole. Either way it's good but it's got to be bushes baked beans.
I always liked to get a bit creative with hotdogs, but you've opened my eyes to the wonders of tater-tots, Mr. Wolfe!
Didn’t have a lot of money growing up and I can remember my grandmother adding dumplings to a pot of green beans and a pot of boiled potatoes. I didn’t realize she was stretching the food when company showed up. I still miss that food.
I do a variation of shepherd's pie like this..with air-fried tots on top. Also super-easy to make.
Sir, you are a treasure. Eating on a budget is a talent and you sir are savant level. 🎉
Absolutely love it! This is the kind of food I used to eat when I was low on income, even cheaper stuff. For some strange reason, I still like to make it today. Liked and subscribed!
Wolfe Pit has to be one of the kindest creators on his platform
His recipes are always a hit at my house.
Thank you for this video. I enjoyed it very much I will put my own little twist on it thank you keep the videos coming
Still my go to comfort meal.
That looks fantastic! And thank you for keeping the video short and sweet. I'll look for more of your videos.
We do beans and cut hot dogs as a meal but this casserole looks much better and has tots!
My mom always made scalloped potato casserole as a kid a big box of cheesey scalloped potatoes a chopped up ham steak and canned peas
I had some last night and it was delicious!
Fellow WNYer here, and you’re right, white hots add a lot to something like this
Keep up the good work Larry, i appreciate it
Yay! Mr. Wolfe is back! Stay healthy sir, i love your videos and the information you share. Rock on man!
Is it wrong that when I first read your opening sentence, I thought it said "onion workers"? Lol
I used to make this for my kids when they were little. Never knew what to call it but they loved it. Keep the videos coming, always like watching.
Certified Gold!!!!!
BONUS: Its the same amount of food, but because its flatter, you can trick picky kids into eating more😂😂😂
Oh my gosh yes. A few years ago I got a george foreman grill at a thrift store for $5. It's amazing.
What you ate as a kid is your comfort food as an adult
After 66 years, I totally agree! 😊
Good ideas thank you!
Try adding raw scrambled eggs and let them cook in the soup.
@@kennethward4985 "raw scrambled" is an oxymoron
Scramble then stir in uncooked wise guy. @@Michael-bn1oi
@@Michael-bn1oiUuum...what?
What do you call the "oxymoron" after they're cooked???
This is how you make a recipe video!
Loose rules, tons of options, simple, cheap and concise.
Well done
We make this with chili and hot links..I'll have to try it with baked beans 😊
Reminds me of child hood days. Great memories!!!!
Pretty tasty looking
This one is a winner, as I like everything that went in it! Thanks!
Merry Christmas Wolfepit gang. When Covid19 reared its ugly head, I turned to TH-cam, Twitch, and my Willie Nelson collection. Having over 35 years as a television master control operator, I have no use for TV or commercials. I totally enjoy everything you do here. This is my 1st comment, and maybe my last. Good luck in the coming year and know for sure that you are making at least one person happy! Peace, bro.
I love beans and franks. Ate them from the time I was a wee lad in a day care center. This boosted version looks delicious.
Now do this exact recipe but substitute chili for the baked beans and your life will be forever changed by the deliciousness that you stuff down your gullet
Whatever label you're most comfortable with, we are cuisine brothers man! God bless you and keep cooking on!
I was going to say my hubby doesn't like baked beans, but I could use chili. Thanks I need these recipes right now. It's a no spend eat out of the pantry couple of months.
I am doing a pantry challenge for a awhile. I only buy fresh veggies now
Hope you enjoy
Doing a pantry, fridge and freezer challenge myself. Trying to do as little shopping as possible. Problem is you can't help but restock certain foods like milk so that's where the temptation of "let's see if they got anything new here" always hits and you wind up going home with a full trunk instead of a half bag.
So simple, yet so delicious.
I would have to add brown sugar, ketchup, onions, and a tad of mustard to the beans....
Also add a little bit of apple cider vinegar. :) But you right about everything else.
Wow good idea, have to try
I loved your idea to precook the potatoes. It would stop them from getting soggy. Thank you
I would've added a can of chili to it.
Rather a can of chilli then those beans
And I'm a backwater slacker, so I applaud these dishes.
No such thing as too much cheese or too much bacon.
Agreed!
No such thing as leftovers when there's plenty of cheese and bacon
I love beannie weenies!! I'm from the South, Georgia, this is how we cook on a budget
Go look what Funyuns cost now. It's a crying shame
Yep. Now they're just Yuns.
Well cheetos were also cheap especially when you get cheesy fingers afterwards but now yikes..
And they don't taste the same, very bland. I think they cut back on the onion flavor. 😢
Larry my family did too. I think it made us better people. Be proud
Awesome video and recipe. Thanks and keep up the great work!
Oooh yum! I grew up poor too. We had lots of toss in the pot dishes like a hamburger rice casserole. Lots of seasonings. My mom never thought of this one.
Love this! My family made it with cheap ground beef instead of hot dogs. Need to try it this way!
Thanks 💚✌🏽
What is an automate?? Not sure if it's a misprint or I'm just having a slow morning 😂
Started watching this channel way back in 2017, and this was one of the first videos i ever saw from wolfe pit. Hope u get to feeling better soon
Hope you enjoy
I’m with you on pre-cooking the tots, and I would also sauté the hot dogs before mixing in with the beans. Yummy 😋😋
