I really like the fakeout they did at the beginning with the first few levels. It makes the drop down to Alterna feel way cooler and it shows that they're purposely shaking things up. Some really cool and fun levels, and the idol boss fights were great too. Looking forward to seeing part 2 with the incredible final boss!
This story mode feels so beautifully designed so that you can play it how you want. Want to play fast? It's fairly easy to skip de-fuzzing and speed to bosses. Want an easy time? You can reply old easy levels to get more eggs to progress. It's open-ended enough for you to determine your own speed and difficulty level, and I love that. It's like they said "How do we get everyone to enjoy the same story mode without making them select a difficulty level explicitly?"
You also can play without upgrades if you want some challenge ! Just, don't do that on the very last level of the game, it's doable, but really really hard

Octo Expansion was REALLY good, so it’s hard to say if this tops it when the hype is still big. But more importantly, how is a “large-scale single player” DLC gonna turn out of this is small?
@@cathackzz I VERY much doubt they’d lock multiplayer content behind paid DLC. They’ve shown to be very cautious when it comes to making sure multiplayer modes have enough active players, and anything less than new modes wouldn’t be ‘large scale’ - so if it isn’t new modes, it isn’t multiplayer.
I feel like the dlc will have to do with something about marina meeting pearl and pearl being oblivious that she’s an octoling. I’D like to see another spinoff of mr grizz arriving to earth only to see it complete destroyed. Just a fun thought

Fun semi-obscure fact: While you can interact with that Zapfish plush to go back to the Crater levels if you want, but inside Cuttlefish's tent is a drawing of the Captain that you can also interact with to change their appearance (Splatoon 1 options only though)

My favourite moment of the story mode was when big man said “it’s manting time” Fr an emotional moment had me in tears, shock, anger, glee, dare I go as far as to say it had me in awe, disbelief, and envy
They've clearly succeeded with the whole concept of "testing" the character in Octo Expansion and Return of the Mammalians, as it allows them to do many interesting levels that aren't just "bases." However, I really hope they don't try and do it a third time with the DLC. They've done well, but we need something new like an open world otherwise it will just feel like spl1 and spl2 storymodes repeating
it actually doesn't surprise me that the testing gimmick has been a massive success, since in terms of game design it's literally just the 3d mario collectathon format, something nintendo has already refined to absolute perfection over the course of over 20 years

love how most people go into story mode with some idea of who their fav is and by the time they come out they have to reconsider. I went from a big man fan to a frye fan, the eels coming out and screaming was too strong an image for me to ignore, and frye squatting during the intro sequence and doing the "BLEH" when they left endeared me to her so hard. She's just got POWER in every aspect of her aesthetics
LOl when you said Shiver's the only slightly intimidating one, I totally feel like Frye would bully me. (We had the same Moray thought too) But it was so cool to see you playing through the levels and having a good time! The way you zoomed through those Zipcaster levels was peak.
Best hero mode Splatoon has ever gotten. I love the bait and switch at the beginning, Alterna is such a fun location to explore that connects beautifully to Splatoon's lore and they somehow managed to top the NILS statue with the final boss.
The zip levels are definitely the best group, but the splashdown level is easily my favorite single stage in the game. The fucking CACKLING it got out of me, whether I wanted to or not, god damn. XD
When I fought the 4th boss I literally was freaking out cos it LITERALLY is SUNSHINE! I was all giddy and such just like you, it was an amazing throwback that had me grinning the whole battle! Absolutely the best reference to Sunshine they coulda done.
The fact that everyone I've watched has walked into the fuzzy ooze in the beginning makes me feel better about doing it myself when I played Story Mode! I love how they baited us with the first five levels, then completely changed tone with Alterna.

The Splatoon 3 story mode is great! Also, when I first saw the Big Man fight and what it was gonna entail, I paused my game and spent a bit laughing at the reference. Big Man was probably my fav of the Deep Cut fights. I am curious if you did all of the kettles or not... i love the way you come at this story mode, awesome combination of 'yeah i'm in this to enjoy it' as well as insights as someone with lots of multiplayer experience sometimes it can feel like casual and competitive can be two parties at odds with each other... maybe it's in part because it's Splatoon which is just built different, but people like you and your community (some great chat moments there) remind me we're all trying to have fun, i guess also Shiver would totally step on you regardless of whether you want her to or not, just saying
I've always loved games where you're traveling with a companion, so I got extremely attached to Little Buddy. I couldn't have asked for a better ending for the game with that in mind.
I'm really glad they went more the route of the Octo Expansion as far as design, but I didn't feel like there was as much challenge available as OE had. That's probably getting saved for that promised DLC, but it was disappointing to only have that one secret level as a real challenge.

Something about the big man boss fight, there is an upgrade that when you’re in ink, shows you near objects and enemies… yes, I could literally know which shadow was big man.
As someone who Charted areas 1-6, I can confirm there are so many cool and secret things in the story mode and I love that they make you upgrade and all of this new stuff, I really like the mechanics in the game and (spoiler warning, proceed with caution) THE AMAZING FINAL BOSS OST, MR GRIZZ I DONT CARE HOW EVIL YOU ARE I NEED TO KNOW HOW YOU MAKE SUCH GOOD SONGS.
I know that Big Man’s fight is, like, the best part about the story mode, but what I am never going to understand is how in the world would this fight ever be anything but EASY. Maybe it was just me trying to get all the upgrades i could before moving islands so I could see a reticle on Big Man and, after he divided, the red one was on the main body. Not even two minutes long
I just realized that Big Man's fight has the Kraken Royale's charge attack kind of. Cool that the story mode makes early use of certain elements later added to multiplayer, like fog for the foggy notion challenge.

Believe me when I say I was pissed when I saw Octavio in the trailer, and even more so when they announced the Zapfish disappearance. I forgave the story after that.
It’s fun trying to platform around the hub while removing as little fur as possible, because they made routes for getting to most of the levels without removing most of it.
Hey ProChara, I just thought about the fact that since ballpoint splatling can be a flank / long range weapon, thanks to its shooting-mode-switch, it could be amazing if one of it had a kit with zipcaster. I don't know if it's really a good thing or not actually 😂. Oh and I think it'd be a cool thing too if exploser had a kit with Crab tank : it's a long range weapon so it can stay back using a crab tank and being quite safe to get some kills maybe easier than with just using the explosher.

I wouldn’t say it’s a corpse. More like an empty mech suit. Octo McNicelegs simply isn’t piloting it in this game.
I would use chassis instead of corpse but I guess either works in this case.

It was the best of octo expansion mixed with the best of vanilla hero mode with some amazing animation in the side for flavor.
