The story mode is PERFECT they took all the good things about both the hero mode and octo expansion and somehow even made them better. Amazing work from the devs
Mr. Grizz is, in my opinion, one of the more sympathetic villains in Splatoon. Imagine being in hibernation for 12,000 years and when you wake up, everyone and everything on the ship you inhabited is dead except you and there is no longer a single creature like you in the entire world. Not great, but certainly more akin to Octavio stealing the Zapfish to help his people rather than Tartar practically killing all living things just because their society didn't meet their expectations.
We can sympathize with Grizz because we can imagine the feeling of being completely alone, we can empathize with Octavio because he only wants to help his people, and Tartar only knows genocide. That's my best accurate summary of the splatoon bosses.
I agree wholeheartedly, I think we've all had a feeling of being alone at some point or another, just that crushing weight that Mr. Grizz must have felt, and the fear too. I also agree with the Octavia fact. He's very much so "the ends justify the means." And yes he probably could have done it better but he was honestly trying to help his people. Does that justify stealing the zapfish? Twice? No. But its at least understandable. Screw the phone that's just like "welp time to kill everyone."
Grizz’s plan is also kind of the least evil of them all, he isn’t killing anyone(besides the captain) he is jut turning them all into mammals. Meanwhile Tartar is just Telephone Hitler.
The lore is SO gripping and full of dread. Of course we've known that human essentially went extinct, but slowly learning about their demise, that generations of humans lived underground until the cavern crumbled in on itself thanks to the ignorance of newer generations, and a space shuttle with earth's last survivors drifted in space for 10,000 years until it came crashing back down on earth, it's pretty terrifying to think about. It's one of my favorite things about Splatoon story mode, the lore is so unexpectedly unsettling in every way, and it's all hidden under a bright and colorful Nintendo game.
For those who are wondering… -lil Judd took over grizz co, you can see he has a mic on after beating story mode. -cuttlefish will probably be fine, that happens to any inkling that dries out so he probably just needs a soda or something -go to deep cut’s studio after beating the story mode and they will do a different wave Animation than before beating story mode. -replaying boss fights has funny dialogue as usual.
Fun fact for the story mode: if you have octo expansion, the appearance of captain 3 in splat 3 is directly taken from what you made agent 3 look like in that game. You can change it at the tent in the crater tho.
Callies response of “Plenty! But dont worry about that” is killing me. And because its CALLIE saying that, its like her admitting to “yea im jealous of Marie and yea i was brainwashed into almost killing her but this isn't splatoon 2 so we’re not gonna talk about it”. Throughout the whole story, i would read the level names and think that Callie named them. It’s like the game had told me she named them and that info was just there in my brain, but the game never said she did. She never named them, yet from the very start in the crater i still unconsciously thought Callie came up with the names. Callie is a comedic queen
If your wondering why the octarians have the giant TV screens is because after the great turf war the octarians were shoved into underground domes that the humans created during the apocalypse (It’s also why the splatoon 1 and 2 story mode takes place in valleys / canyons)
OH SHIT I DIDN'T THINK OF THAT! wait... then is that why the Octo expansion levels had old human stuff in it like Game Cubes, cd's and stuff because it would of been the 3d printed remains from the humans in Altaria?
the octarians were pushed underground into caverns constructed after the war but the walls were not covered in tvs like we see in the games when they covered the walls the power consumption was to high for the octarians to keep up with so they stole the zapfish to power the bunkers and in the two years between one and two we can see that some tvs were falling off the walls and even into the water so they stole the zapfish so they had power to work with while rebuilding, then when the zapfish is gone again they replace the giant tvs with giant crt tvs to save on power so which we see before falling into alterna in 3 i dont have a source im just making a basic theory based on plot points we have. dont quote me on this we also see parts of the flood sitting at the bottom of the domes
The thing is though, the "domes" in 3 don't have any sort of roof, with open air visible if you look up. Perhaps in-between 2 and 3 they moved closer to the surface?

A funny part for when you finish the story mode, is that when you go back to grizzco’s in splatoon 3, Mr. Grizz’s statue thing is now being eaten by a salmon. (Possibly little buddy)
Fun fact! After beating the story mode, the radio in the Grizzco main lobby changes from a bear eating a fish, to Hugefry eating a bear. A nice, very subtle touch.

This Hero Mode is everything I could've asked for, but I do wish that in the DLC we get some more of Octavio, cause he's just such a cool character and we don't see him that much. But this Hero Mode was so fun, and I love the music in it. The Splatoon team outdid themselves.

Congrats Jay on being the ONLY person I follow who I've been able to watch play the Splat3 story mode, simply because you appreciate the lore and its context within the greater Splatoon narrative and history as much as me. I really want them to make a story mode that resembles the story of the Splatoon Coroika manga. Something like your character entering a big turf war tournament and their story on how they met their teammates, cool side quests, meeting important characters, fighting through the tournament against teams with cool characters leading them, and finally winning the tournament against the top team. Sounds a bit cliché, but I think if it's done well it could be really good and fun, and would fit in the Splatoon world, not having to save the world, just a simple tournament. Like the story of the Splatoon manga, emphasizing character interactions and personalities.

Nah, little buddy is definitely a salmon. Most species of salmon look like that as adults, particularly during spawning season. If I had to guess he's probably a Coho or Sockeye.
I've played splatoon for 7 years. It holds a special place in my heart and mind that no series will ever be able to replace. To see the story mode be so good is a treat I adore. Octo Expansion was a work of art, but Alterna is a masterpiece that takes the best parts of previous games and octo expansion, molds them into one, and manages to improve on that combination. I don't know how they did it. Maybe it's because it seemed like this game (and the series) was so fun to make; just letting loose, letting the people who like worldbuilding build a world, letting people add their characters into that world, and giving it to the world. You have a standard to live up to, yes, and splatoon has checked every box in my eyes. What an amazing trilogy. The Squidbeak Splatoon saga has ended, and I'm excited to see what comes next. the dlc where we get to see pearl and marina's wedding will also be fun though please nintendo give me my lesbian queens

As an IT srudent, the liquid crystal that "reads minds" is used in monitors irl, it's just a liquid that is able to polaryze the light in a certain way that makes it possible for us to see what's on the screen. (I'm on my 1st year and maybe got something wrong since we barely brushed the topic for now, if you can explain it better feel free to do so^^) so the fake sky of Alterna is made of screens but since it comes from these mutated squids it has special property of reading electronic waves coming from living beings. That's how i understand it at least
Watching this after completing the story mode (too quickly...) is an absolute expirience. JUst to grin while Jay asks questions that I know the answer to.
I always beat the hero mode before going online, so I spent the first 4 and a half hours grinding through it and playing online for three matches and completely conking out. Day 2, I 100%'d everything and all I got was a stupid headband and I love it.

One detail that I like after you beat the story mode, if you go back to Mr. Grizz in Splatsville he changed from a wooden bear holding a salmon to a wooden salmon holding a bear.
Imagine just being an Inkling or Octoling chilling and having a squid party or some shit, and then you see a massive beam of light in the sky, and a giant-ass fish just spawns and a rocket ship crashes into it and then a massive explosion. That would be so damn traumatizing, no?
Aw he didn't see the funny ending of Those Aren't Birds. If you don't shoot the last crate early enough, it bounces off the fence and away from you. It's very tricky to hit after it does that. Caught me very much off guard
tartar was trying to find the perfect life form, but became corrupted somehow, which made him think HE was the perfect life form, so he tried to sanitize the world. Mr. grizz is just trying to start his fursuit business
I like the little extra detail that no turf war stages are used in the story mode because neither Mr. Grizz nor (any information of them into) O.R.C.A.('s data banks) had been to any of them before, so they couldn't be recreated into Alterna's kettles.
Ok that moment when you read out "you will not receive severance pay" on top of the explosion happening and your reaction to it is hella priceless, i can never stop myself from rewinding it back and laughing over and over again
I loved this video a lot! I also wanted to complete the campaign, but I didn't go 100%, I went 1000%, and almost lost my mind by missing one tiddly wink part of the 6th part of the world map. I think I might watch the original playthrough you did as well
1:14:10 The craziest part is that you can see he gets a little bit of the "you touched enemy ink" effect on the edges of the screen, so the game registered that he touched enemy ink, but at the same time it didn't register.
Thank you for standing up for hermit crabs! I had a friend who raised them and was very diligent in taking care of them. They lived for a few years and had their own distinct personalities, and make really fun pets when you take care of them correctly.

I had been keeping away from Splatoon 3 content until I completed the main story myself. But here’s an interesting tidbit: Mr. Grizz returned to Earth around the same time Judd was released from Cryo-sleep by the Inklings. Presumably the Professor who originally owned Judd willing kept him on Earth, possibly with Tartar, to live a better life. It’s slightly sad then, that Mr. Grizz never actually encountered Judd, considering the guy _literally has a base of operations immediately next to where Judd sits in Splatoon 2._ Like bruh.
Man imagine being Mr Grizz, lucid dreaming for 10 thousand years, waiting to finally see your friends and everyone else on the rocket and when you finally wake back up, you’re completely alone. Weirdly enough, writing it out like that it’s a similar tragedy to Mei from Overwatch, but infinitely more lonely and cold.
I can't remember exactly how long it took me to beat 'One way Ride Through Target Town', because my brain is protecting me from the trauma. If I had to guess, I'd say close to a month. I _eventually_ caved and used the Splatling gun and got after a couple tries. No Jay, you are not alone, fuck that level.

I like the little extra detail that no turf war stages are used in the story mode because neither Mr. Grizz nor (any information of them into) O.R.C.A.('s data banks) had been to any of them before, so they couldn't be recreated into Alterna's kettles.

Thank you for standing up for hermit crabs! I had a friend who raised them and was very diligent in taking care of them. They lived for a few years and had their own distinct personalities, and make really fun pets when you take care of them correctly.

I had been keeping away from Splatoon 3 content until I completed the main story myself.
But here’s an interesting tidbit: Mr. Grizz returned to Earth around the same time Judd was released from Cryo-sleep by the Inklings. Presumably the Professor who originally owned Judd willing kept him on Earth, possibly with Tartar, to live a better life.
It’s slightly sad then, that Mr. Grizz never actually encountered Judd, considering the guy _literally has a base of operations immediately next to where Judd sits in Splatoon 2._ Like bruh.

I can't remember exactly how long it took me to beat 'One way Ride Through Target Town', because my brain is protecting me from the trauma. If I had to guess, I'd say close to a month.
