      @@CediEntertainment They're two different versions, not just translated. The Swedish versions is from the point of view of a Swedish soldier. The English version is more of an overlook of the whole ware from a neutral observers point of view. It's the same with the song 1648. The Swedish version is, once again, from the Swedish soldiers point of view, while the English version is from the point of view of the people of Prague during the Swedish siege and ransacking of the city. The rest of the songs are, more or less, the same in both languages.

    "Döpas och dö i strid" meaning to "be baptized and die by war". As the war was so long, 30 years, boys was born (baptized) during the war and they died later - in the same war, hence the title "A life time of war".
    Because for these young men this war became their entire life, sadly...

    As a Swedish Sabatonfan I would say that this song is why they became really popular in Sweden. Most reactors started to know them with Bismarck (great song and story btw) and have never looked back since. The coolest vinyl they have made is "The royal guard" since it is a 1000 item limited edition with actual gunpowder mixed with the vinyl. But to really get to know Sabaton there is a certain song you need to know: Swedish pagans!! The crowdpleaser of all. And it´s a theme running through Sabaton concerts: The crowd and the band tries to force Joakim to sing it and he pretends (I hope) he hates it but finally gives in. In their hometown Falun they actually have their own festival called Sabaton open air.Oh and they have their stagesetup with tank and plane for sale in Kobi (Lego clone) really a grown mans best present ever. Love all your stuff and best wishes from Sweden.

      I’m not a massive fan of heavy metal either. But I love history, and having a popular band tell historical stories through music is one of the coolest things I’ve heard of. History is seen as extremely boring, at least here in the states, so using music as the medium is just brilliant to me. They also musically nail the vibe of each topic extremely well, almost like a movie soundtrack.

    Awesome to see you reacting to the version from Gothenburg, I was at that show (I was sitting in the middle of the platform to the left from this view of the stage) Just before this clip started Joakim asked everyone to hold up their cellphones since no one carries around a lighter anymore. Needless to say, this was one hell of a night, sadly, this was just before covid broke out and started canceling shows (had for once tickets for 5 shows and 1 festival that year and this was the only one I got to attend)
    we were around 10 766 people at the arena that night (going by facts from the show)
    I usually explain the difference between the Swedish and English is that the Swedish tells the story from a Swedish soldier's view while the English are more from an "outsiders" view.
    as for the Swedish part of the english version it said Döpas och dö i strid (be baptized and die in battle)

    About the lyrics being different in english:
    The entire album (Carolus Rex) is availible in an english and a swedish version. The lyrics aren't simply translated for any of the songs. Instead, while the theme of each song remains the same, the swedish version are taking the perspective of the participating individuals, while the english lyrics take the perspective of an outsider.

      It’s a hard line to walk sometimes, but with sabaton specifically that’s why I try to do the history videos of the songs I cover. It’s gives a little bit better of an opportunity to chop it up a bit more and get into it. And I’m coming at this from a history perspective, not a musical perspective, so it would be hard for me to talk about them much in that space anyway. All I know is that they sound great, and teaching history to the masses via music is one of the best ideas I’ve ever come across.

    'Baptised in blood' refers to the fact that during the 30 Years War it was common for soldiers' families to accompany them into the field. Children were born there, their father died in the war, the sons took over and died in turn. And so it went on. Generations were erased.

    Sweden has not officially been in war for a long long time.
    But we never forgot about it, we don't really take if for granted even if it sometimes feels like it.
    This song is a strong reminder about our history. The wars we had to endur.

    It very much expresses the Nordic sentiment, very similar to the Russian sentiment, that you sacrifice your life for your Homeland without any thought of reward or recognition. You just do it, because it is what you should do. In Swedens case you can probably explain that somewhat with Lutheranism that motivated the Swedish soldier in the 17th century when we spread fear throughout the Northern and Central Europe with incredible victories against numerically greater enemies.

      Correct. I’m not sure what I said in the video but yes, this one is over the 30 years war and not King Carl XII.

    What gets me is that they take the 30 year war, one of mankind’s bloodiest war. And boil it down to the single soldiers. War is scared young men and women and it’s often forgotten in the large numbers of killed and wounded.

    • @rayceofhistory
      @rayceofhistory  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve talked about this on the channel a few times, but I tend to lean towards first person, “bottom up” historical accounts of war. The reason for that is because it’s very easy to, when studying or looking at a war, get sucked in to looking at fronts, pushes, counter attacks, and while that stuff is important for understanding a conflict more broadly, it’s very easy to lose the reality of what the war was when looking at it that way. The reality of war for everyone who fought in it was exponentially different than that.

    The translation of the Swedish version is far from perfect. In particular I was disturbed by "kriget det kan förgöra en man" which should have been translated as "war can destroy a man" (not "because of the war, destroy a man" which doesn't even make sense).

    Oh a great song but some of the imagery in the English video is way off. The video shows the Swedish Carolean soldiers that did not exist during the thirty year war and Carolus Rex that also show up in the video was not even born yet. It was the Swedish King Gustavus Adolphus (The lion of the north) that join the war. He died in the battle of Lützen during the war and his daughter Queen Christina that ruled when the war ended.

    • @rayceofhistory
      @rayceofhistory  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I noticed that too. It may have just been a mix up by whoever they have doing their videos, I know I’ve had to be careful about what I say going through this time period because it can get kind of confusing, especially with the album being called Carolus Rex but covering essentially the rise and fall of the Swedish Empire.

    Baptized and dead in war. Your perspective is correct, its about sweden in the swedish version and a broader perspective of war generally in english. Think they got their shovel of shit from the lefties for the swedish version because its nationalistic. Al their songs are, for diffrent countries about diffrent wars.

      I talk about it a little in the Sabaton history where they talk about getting pushback in Sweden. But I said in that video I’m glad they went ahead and did it. This is what they do, and it’s respectable that they didn’t skip it just because some people would take it the wrong way.
