      Thank you! There was a project where I CNCed a pattern on my DIY CNC, cast it in my DIY furnace heated with my DIY torch, using my DIY crucible holder and cut the sprues off with my DIY saw stand. Someone said “I could do that if I bought all of those tools…”
      - I made all of those tools, and you can too!

    I'm not even into casting and I want one of these. Great work!

    Those are sure well designed and crafted. There's simpler style of lifting/pouring tongs though. I learned of this style from the guy who taught me bronze casting. It's easier to show than to describe, but I'll try since I don't have pictures. The jaws gripping the crucible are at a right angle to the reins, so holding the tongs level with the ground, the reins are perpendicular, the bottom rein controls the jaw farthest from you, the upper rein the near jaw. So open the tongs, settle them over the crucible, close and lift. When the crucible is out of the furnace, it's held upright with the tong reins horizontal, you then rotate the reins to pour the metal, and then right back in the furnace. The only fussy part is you have to be careful not to over open the tongs when entering the furnace, this design the jaws can open very wide. I guess I should post my own video, and others can tell me what I could do better. :) Nice workmanship Sir.

    Looks very safe. Eliminating the change-over step (from extracting tongs to pouring holder), was a great idea - makes people calm and thoughtful of what they're doing, and no need to rush and make mistakes that can burn your legs.

    Yeah Brian I am with everyone else on this one. Sell the CAD file. I can say without a doubt that I would buy that. I also would prefer the CAD file so I could adjust the size of the crucible catch. And on a related note, I think you have had a couple of people interested in your CNC machine.....any chance on a build list and plans for that as well? Keep it up, this was great.

    Brian... this is genius‼️
    It’s been 4-ish years since you published this video and I have yet seen a better design (only copiers). This is beyond my capabilities to craft but I’d love to see the drawn up plans 🤩 Do they exist?
    You are an amazing engineer and I ❤️ following you... and... I’d love to see more of your work. Now that you’ve used these tongs in real world applications; are there any updates you’d like to implement?
    Crazy question (another one)... have you considered possibly designing other all-in-one/lift & pouring combo tongs that ‘less equipped’ folk like me can make in our backyard workshops? (pretty please😊)

  • @evandthayer
    @evandthayer 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Really slickly and correctly done. You have a good eye for the function and allow the details to express it. Bravo. Consider adjusting the spring location and strength so the tongs fail closed. Might be nice to only have to squeeze to pick up or put down.

    • @Grunblau
      @Grunblau  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      This would be an interesting but completely counter approach... if it started slipping, my first response would be to squeeze rather than to let go harder. It would be nice to only have to squeeze at the beginning and end, though!

      You could get at least $25 for a set of plans alone, I reckon. You could make a flat(ish) pack kit for this and sell it quite profitably.
      Not in the market for this at the moment but perhaps down the track.
      I've also got my eye on your CNC table for the future.

    • @jagboy69
      @jagboy69 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The cad file for 25bucks would be awesome and no fuss for Brian. Then the end user can pass off the plans to a cnc plasma shop and have them cut out for about 60-100bucks. Then just make the bends and assemble. I'll buy plans gladly. No stainless for me, thats a bit too fancy for the way I roll. :-)

      But at $200+ it's hard to swallow. How much for just the plans? I'm fortunate to have my own small machine shop (inherited), so I think I would enjoy making my own more than spending that much on something that does what I can sort of already do. Tough call though.

    yes loved the video. answered all my questions. however while i would be interested in buying a set the questions that come to mind are (a) what would be the price when you got a bulk manufactor run and (b) what would the postage internationally (i am in australia) be? depending on the answer buying the plans for personal non commercial use (ie i could get these made for my self but could not get a bunch made and sell them) so i could go to a metal workshop and get the parts made locally might be better all round. thanks for the video.

    Nice work. Looks like a really nice tongs, just a thought though if you are indeed planning to do a full run. It seems to me that the wooden handle is a potential point of failure as it ages and dries, perhaps it would be safer to run a threaded rod through the handle instead of just a screw from each end? This way if the wood ever deteriorates there is still something to hold on to. Cheers.

    Are these plasma, laser or waterjet cut?
    The design concept is really neat, and I imagine it can be easily reproduced by anyone with enough CAD and design experience for their own use, as it is indeed a very nifty design. Also seems that plenty of people are very interested in getting an assemble it yourself kit for this.
    Also, I hope you have found and have had the good fortune of getting a lathe; it and a milling machine are the most versatile pieces of machinery anyone can use to make literally anything.
