      Brian Oltrogge I would not have thought of the pre-cut strips because I would be too worried about the tolerances working out at full-size, but I bet it will work great. It is a cool innovation.

      Wow, high praise coming from you Nick! I've loved your build series and hope to eventually build one myself. I do think there is something to this approach that Brian has done, especially if he can figure out an effective way to do the stitch and glue method without needing to do any stitching. It would make for a beautiful craft.

    My father's generation referred to work like this as 'a labour of love'. There are people who would wonder why a man would go to so much trouble to make a scale model, but the proof of your being right is the piece of art, shaped like a kayak, hanging on your wall. The old carpenters would make elaborate tool chests as evidence of their craftmanship, but you can point to that model, having used modern tools like a laser cutter and a 3d printer, and it speaks for itself. Well done. Once you have the actual full-scale kayak to paddle around, you will appreciate all of the benefits you derived from being so painstakingly careful in the model. God has honoured you with the gifts of craftmanship and art, and like many before you, you took those gifts and ran with them, developed them to the point where I anticipate with glee, what you will produce next.

    • @Grunblau
      @Grunblau  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! This was the last video that got meaningful views for my channel…. Shortly after, TH-cam also broke out in a rash of Kayaks and Canoes from various YT makers.
      I bought all of the wood and cut the full scale buck. I still need to buy about $450 worth of epoxy and fiberglass.
      Going from a self supporting channel where I could budget for tools and materials to barely able to document my own projects I pay for out of my own pocket made it so I had to reprioritize my projects based on what I could actually afford from time and money.
      I still intend to do the full size version although I used the epoxy and fiberglass for the Koi Pond that got 18K views. I am considering producing a limited run of Kayak kits to help pay for the full scale version.
      I don’t agree with the changes TH-cam has made that punishes longer format content from older channels. I think they have gone overboard with commercials and I would rather not do videos for products if I can help it. It is an unfortunate situation that will hopefully resolve itself soon as I know many TH-camrs are struggling to continue their channel.
      I am making content whether anyone will ever see it or not. I am also focusing on developing a prefab building, while balancing a job and taking on uninteresting fabrication work to pay the bills.
      Sorry for being so long…

      Thank you! TH-cam basically broke out in a canoe and kayak rash right after I finished this model. With a new mail order kayak being built every week, I figured that mine would surely get lost in the shuffle. Also, I was hoping that the Koi Pond series would help me to afford the materials, resin, etc… but that was when the YT algorithm changed and so did my ability to budget for projects like $800+ of kayak materials.
      I have the mahogany plywood and the full scale buck ready and I have filmed the start (cutting and assembling the buck), but I will have to keep doing other less interesting things off camera to pay the bills and hopefully buy some epoxy and fiberglass at some point.
      I also immediately built another one of these models for a friend. Turned out even better than the one in the video! So I have considered making a run of kits to pay for the full scale build.

    What an amazing return. That model has more precision and care in it than probably anything I have ever made, and I am an engineer! Keep it up.

    I don't know if its the kind of microphone or his post audio editing process but it lends a kind of 1970s-80s sound that one would find in a instructional video of that time. A very welcome change from the crystal clear audio of modern youtuber production

    To be honest, I clicked on this just to see your method of construction which was instructive. I built a model Polynesian voyaging canoe (ocean-going) from a picture of one at a museum but the labor of milling the planks, shaping them and configuring the hull, keel (not much of one-rather vee-shaped), and the appropriate outrigger was killer. It came out fine (about 3 in. wide amidships, 3 in. in depth, and 32 in. from bow to stern. That said, I really learned some nice design tricks from you and I appreciate that. Best wishes from Kauai and stay healthy!
