    I discovered SMT back when I was in college in 2004 with “SMT III: Nocturne”, which I loved for how dark and different it was to other JRPG’s. Then, when “SMT: Persona 3” came out, I was hooked and am a huge fan of SMT and all of its spin offs. (Btw, I think “Persona 3 Portable” is the best version of “Persona 3” since it has all of the quality-of -life improvements made in “Persona 4”.)

    I wish they would re-release the original games and the first two Shin Megami Tensei games in the west for a console or even just PC already. A sequel to Soul Hackers would be fun too.

    It’s always funny to me when people call smt games Pokemon ripoffs. A) they have better stories so even if they came second it would be an evolution more than a ripoff and b) it came first.

    As basic and cheap as Persona 2's guidebook was, I do give it credit for shedding light on the SMT series. I never would've known about the mainline SMT series without it

    Kyuuyaku megami tensei was BRUTAL (i wonder why erick didn't showed the fan translated version) the first shin megami tensei was also challenging (i recommend the gba version) 2 and If were great but i've never finished those. Persona 2 (both games) are a MASTERPIECE (for me obviously)

    • @bun_66
      @bun_66 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In terms of flights, both Kyuuyaku and SMT I are very easy, especially braindead boss fights in SMT I. Kyuuyaku MT I has tiring dungeons and in SMT I you'll need determination to get through them but I can't say it's BRUTAL. I prefer PS1 version of SMT I with better visuals, smoothness and much better music. Not showing translated version is weird and this video seems pretty basic, for example he said Persona 1 was outdated on release which doesn't make any sense. Of course he didn't finished any of 90s Megaten so that's the reason

    I remember the first game I played was Devil Survivor on DS and I was surprised at how hard it was. It was like playing a combination of a grid based strategy game and a pokemon game that would punish you for complacency and getting too attached to certain monsters. You HAD to rearrange your roster based on skill types to stand a chance to complete missions with specific objectives. You also HAD to replace monster units with later types or you just didn't stand a chance because the experience gap for the earlier monsters to get to the next level would get too large. It has multiple ending routes, and aside from the pain of having to play through the entire game again it is so worth it to get the monsters you earn from the easier routes to help beat the harder routes.

    The PS2 era is still the best experimental era for gaming for gamers and developers. I remember seeing SMT Lucifer's Call along with that tempting Dante sticker really got me to play the game after I was done with FF12. It was very bizzare for me at first but I quickly got into the mechanics risk n rewarding combat. For a JRPG I'm glad it didn't shy away from religious and many dark topics tho the writing isn't really good it still nailed the tone regardless. I did go and complete DDS1 and 2 which are also great games. I did play a bit of Persona 3 n 4... eh sorry it was just not a series for me also I was going through alot of life changes etc etc that it was just not appealing.
    I did go back to persona many many years later and I like the series. I don't love it still hahaha. I will still play some of the other megaten spin offs or main games over persona. Heck I'll still play other JRPGs over SMT itself like Xenoblade, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 6 n 9 and my favourite rpg of all time Dragon Quest 8.
    I'm really loving SMT5 so far and it feels great seeing this series come back. Also SMT4 is my personal fav in the series hehehe im just saying.

    This is a fascinating series and I look forward to exploring it further. Nocturne surprised me with how good it is and I'm impatiently waiting for my copy of SMT V to arrive. I'm liking the series so much that I might even invest in getting a 3DS mainly to play all the games from the series on that system.

    I am a little confused, I don't recall Nocturne getting "critical acclaim" in the US. It reviewed okay and no one trashed it, but I don't remember any media falling all over themselves to give it "critical acclaim". As for the rift in fans.... I think you mean the rift in "fanbois". Real fans couldn't care less and appreciate all the games for what they are not what "series" they are a part of.
    Lastly the thing that gave them the financial win they needed was when they got the US release rights to Demon's Souls. Demon's Souls was their top selling game of all time until the release of Person 5, which I am sure kinda stung since they were only the US publisher but hey thanks to Atlus Souls games became a thing. Way too many people forget that. Maybe not relevant to Shin Megami Tensei, but you started talking about acquisitions.

    • @puzzle_boy
      @puzzle_boy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      As far as I know. Nocturne didn't sell as well as Atlus thought it would. SMT IV was the first commercial success of the series outside Japan, because it reaches over 600 thousands sales. That's pretty good but still very low if you compare it with other 3DS games. Shin Megami Tensei has always been underrated. We all know every single game deserves more sales than they actually got. But from a certain PoV, it keeps more mysterious and selective that way. I mean, it's like a game that just a bunch of chosen ones know. Like we were part of an initiatic school

    • @DKarkarov
      @DKarkarov 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@puzzle_boy I agree Nocturne probably did not sell as well as atlus thought it would, and that SMT games in general sell okay but nothing spectacular. As far as the "chosen ones" stuff.... it's a video game. I think again it has way more to do with niche appeal and lack or marketing than it does "only certain people know".

      @@DKarkarov Atlus wanted 450 000 sales of Nocturne, game sold 350 000. Bit worse than they expected, but it was still good sales. Nocturne HD Remaster outsold original and sold in one year 500 000 + copies.
