I'm working on a mitten pattern that doesn't cast-on stitches after the thumb stitches are put on a holder, so there is an obvious gap where the thumb stitches and the hand stitches separate. Without much hope, I tried the technique described in this video tutorial, and combined it with the technique described by Suzanne Bryan, in her video tutorial, "Knit Perfect Thumb Gussets for Fingerless Mitts / Mittens / Gloves". Much to my surprise, it worked like a charm. Not only does it eliminate the gap, but it does it so elegantly! Thanks for taking the time to produce and publish this video.
Holy moly. I don't know why I never looked for a tutorial for this before tonight but to have yours be the first one that came up in my search was a godsend. I also knit using magic loop (I despise dpns). I have knitted far too many mittens and ended up sewing the hole closed. I followed your instructions and...Wow! No hole! Thank you.
This video is 5 years old. I almost cried over my holes in my mittens I ripped back the thumbs and kept trying until I found your video. You are amazing!! The *stab it in the face* really did help! I finally found the right stich to pick up after your guidance. Thank u thank u thank u!!!!!
Why didn't I think of that? I've been knitting a very long time and have always just weaved my thumb hole shut, how wonderful of you to have thought of it for me. 💜 Thank you so much! Mittens will be a whole new joy for me to make
Wow, I've been knitting for years and have always struggled with the dang gap. LOL. Thank you. It worked like a charm. The mittens were a gift. So glad to give them now. Feels like more quality workmanship.
Wow this tutorial saved my project! I bought a fingerless gloves pattern but the thumb instructions were so bad. I had to rip it so many times. Your is perfect and there are no holes on the sides just a little one at the base of the thumb. Perfect. Thank you.
Thank for this. I've been knitting for at least 50 years and just keep on learning new techniques thanks to new knitters like you. I have tried this and it's fantastic.
Totally worked! Thanks! I used this to pick up FOUR stitches on some chunky mittens. The knitting backwards on 2 of my 4 picked up stitches was brilliant, much cleaner join.
Thank you! I just tested this method using the Nalu Mitts pattern on Ravelry, but I had to omit the 3 cast on stitches in the pattern to prevent gaps and create a smooth transition. Excellent video!
Thanks so much for uploading a crystal clear tutorial. Now I'm going to try working the thumbs on 3 pairs of fingerless gloves sitting in my basket. You made it look so easy, and I think I can do it!
Can u do a video starting from the beginning of the Gusset, to the middle of the hand, step by step? I have watched so many videos on the gusset, but none show you the complete step by step. Or if someone know where to find a video of what i,m requesting, pls link it or message me. thanks
I'm from Poland so english is definitelly not my mother tongue. but when I do the thumb I always tell myself "stab it in the face" :D It really helped me remember, thank you!
The description says you show how to start a thumb....but your gusset is already done! How did you make a gusset without "stealing" 3 stitches from the hand and having to pick them up later? Love this technique but can't figure out how to start gusset
Sorry about that! I guess I meant "start a thumb after the gusset is finished and it's time to return to those help stitches." But to answer your question: Gussets can begin in any number of ways. If you don't want to steal any stitches from the hand, you can begin it with a M1 or a Backwards Loop, then build the gusset triangle with that new stitch as the base. That's the method I usually use, so any of my mitten patterns on Ravelry will feature that type of thumb gusset, if you want line-by-line instructions.
Hi Lori! I pick up stitches between my fingers in exactly the same way, in the heads of the stitches to either side of the palm and back-of-hand stitches.
Your technique is really neat, literally and figuratively. Right now I am knitting a pair of mittens with lace weight yarn and I’ll be making a liner to go inside them so I can get more practice on the liner thumb gusset before I do the second mitten. I picked up the two extra stitches and proceeded to start knitting the thumb but there still is a little gap . I’m thinking that since the yarn is so fine that perhaps I stretched it a bit and I’m also thinking maybe I should have picked up at least one more. Do you ever have instances where you need to pick up more than two extra stitches? If so, would you pick them up one after the other so they are in the same row? Thank you.
It really works! Thank you! 😊 I have a youtube channel about knitting in Portuguese. I'm planning to teach how to knit mittens. Can I teach your method of closing gaps? I would give you credit for inventing it of course. I just think it would be really helpful to people here who can't speak English.
Often, when you're working in the round, wherever you have the end of a set of stitches (for dpn: at the end of each needle, for magic loop: where the length of the loop is, for 2 circular needles: the end of each needle) the knitting between those two set of stitches runs the risk of being looser than the regular knitting along the length of the needle. If you continue having those looser stitches each row, you end up with a loose line running down your knitting, called a ladder. Tugging the yarn tighter than normal, when you come to the end of a set of stitches ensures you don't end up with loose, laddered knitting.
This looks great! I'm curious . . . after you put the thumb stitches on waste yarn and knit around, did you cast on any new stitches before rejoining in the round to complete the top of the mitt in this particular pattern?
Excellent! Thank you so much. I learned where best to pick up stitches for the increases in the thumb, how long to make the thumb...tip of thumb...and how to do the SSK...knit together through the back of the loop...and how to use the magic loop method! I am an experienced knitter but these were points I have often wondered about! 😍👌👌
This is the best video I've found. I love the camera close-up and your clear explanations. Thank you!
Best gusset hole eliminator technique! So glad you are passing on Cat Bordhi's skills as a knitter and as a teacher.
I cannot tell you how much I appreciate this video. Thank you!
Just wanted to share the love. I gotta say, i've been returning to this tutorial constantly whenever i make my mittens
Always struggle with holes at the thumb. This is the best video I’ve seen on solving this problem. Thank you!

This has been the most comprehensive video in this technique. Thank you!
This is helpful. Those two stitches are like a mini gusset. Very good instructions.
Perfect tutorial! loved how the camera was so close to see what you did! Thank you!
WOW. What a fantastic tutorial. Now, I can return to knitting mittens without ‘holely’ fear. Thank you!
Love this mitten. I am designing my first mitten and I willl add the link to your method! Thank you! My knitterly friends will love this technique!
Thanks so much for clearly showing me how to make a thumb with no holes. My Gram was a excellent knitter and your mittens look as well done as hers.
Thank for this. I've been knitting for at least 50 years and just keep on learning new techniques thanks to new knitters like you. I have tried this and it's fantastic.
Extremely helpful especially to a struggling novice - many thanks !

Amanda, you always have the best knitting tips and what a clear video. Thanks a bunch :)

you are brilliant. I've done this for years and years, but not as brilliantly as this!
Thanks so much for uploading a crystal clear tutorial. Now I'm going to try working the thumbs on 3 pairs of fingerless gloves sitting in my basket. You made it look so easy, and I think I can do it!

This is a good tip. Do you have instructions for mittens for a 1 year old?
Would love to know name brand of your knitting needles
Nice technique thanks. So basically join it by picking up the bar so there will be less holes. Thanks
you are a super teacher. thank you!

Hey, thanks so much for asking! Yes, please spread the good news, and thanks for mentioning me when you do it. That's awesome!
Thank you sososo much for this tutorial!🙏
I tried this out but I still have a hole 🥲 must be doing something wrong. I’ll just have to close it with the yarn tail after, ah well!
Woah you knit so fast!
Awesome I will try this!
This is great!
What did you mean by "to avoid laddering"?

You had me subscribing at "stab it in the face" 😂
😂 Me too!!

Hi Allison! No, I didn't. There was no need with this particular pattern, especially when I pick up the two stitches this way.
I love these mittens! What pattern are you using?
wilkinskm Thanks! The pattern is called XOX OXO, on Ravelry.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Nice!
Yay!
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I feel like I just had one of those mind is blown moments! Would you be so kind as to share the mitten pattern so I could try this?
Maria Furey the pattern is XOX OXO, available on Ravelry.

Helpful, but I don’t like the “stab that b***h in the face” language one bit. No need whatsoever. What if there are kids watching this video?
