I have been looking for a video demonstrating this exact thing for YEARS and somehow just now finally found this. It’s the only accurate demonstration of picking up cast on stitches for a thumb that also incorporates bridging those edge gaps. Thank you so much!!! No more wonky thumbs in my knitting!

I've never tried knitting in the round with double points but this made it look easier than dealing with circular needles for small thumbs. Thanks.

Thank you so much for this! My mitten pattern instructions were just like 'knit up 4 stitches' and I'm a knitting novice so had no idea what they were on about. This was insanely helpful!

The best video on doing a thumb! Clearly shows how the specific stitches are picked up. I have struggled with this for YEARS. Not any more. Thank you.

I've been watching video after video on You Tube for days trying to figure out how to knit mittens or fingerless mitts and no one till now has captured my attention as well as you. Thanks for your EXCELLENT video! As someone else said, the idea of coloring the strands 'pink' was genius. It cleared up my doubts. Keep up the wonderful work!

Wow. This is one of the clearest and most helpful knitting vids I've ever seen. Thank you so much for this tutorial - and for the helpful tip on closing up the "holes" in the gusset. I'll be subscribing to your channel!!!

Thank you! This video along with another saved me from scrapping my whole project and starting again. While I didn't pick up entirely correctly it looks a lot better than it did before I saw this video.

You just saved my sanity! THANK YOU! I have reworked a pair of mittens at least 10 times trying to get the gusset right. Every time the holes just got bigger & bigger. I just pulled those mittens out to try your method, all the while thinking the holes are so big now it's too late for this too work. IT WORKED!!!! Oh the magic of "ditch stitches"! Again, I can't thank you enough for taking your time to share the magic :D

Every stitch has 2 legs with one if front of the needle and one behind. When you pick up one leg the stitch is then seated on the needle correctly. Sounds funny, but it works.

Thanks for the great tutorial. I notice almost all mitten patterns have us cast on stitches after putting the thumb gusset stitches on a yarn holder. Would it work just as well to do increases in the hand portion in first round of the thumb gusset, adding the "live" stitches back that were used in the gusset?

What do I do if I'm doing this on circular needles? How do I pick up a stitch on the main body and what stitch on the mitten? I'm not on double pointed needles! This doesn't tell me anything! 😠😠😠
