Pretty much. Gundam 0080 War in the Pocket even has the series end with the kids talking about how the war is over, but there will be another war with cooler mobile suits!
HolyknightVader999 plus there is a other line for 0080 that goes that yes moblie suits are usefuly, but moblie suits where never made to being anyone happeness.
Always assumed the Newtype concept was intended, on some level, to be part of the tragedy. Here we have these people on the threshold of a better and more enlightened humanity, with psychic powers that can innately link them to one another and make it so they can understand one another's hearts, pains, joys even at great distances... ...and they become just another bullet in humanity's wars. Something downright miraculous becomes something to commodify and weaponize, no different than how the Mobile Suits intended originally for construction become weapons of mass destruction. I would argue that was the core ethos of the Universal Century from arguably halfway through the original series but decidedly from Zeta onwards; when humanity fails to find common cause and instead seeks victory at all costs, no one and nothing is spared from feeding the machine. Hell, with the Artificial Newtypes one could argue it intentionally strips the wonder and grandeur of such powers right out. Make better soldiers, who can use better weapons, period. Grim, but disturbingly accurate and effective in getting across the core themes.
I was thinking the same thing, there's a certain irony when someone who hates violence and peaches peace is found to be incredibly efficient at killing and ends up being an unstoppable killing machine.
Actually, it's more along the lines of people who can understand one another better, being the cusp of a new race, being used as war machines. Not just another bullet, but Newtypes are practically being used as the ace in the hole for many factions. It's like with the Sith. The Force can be used to protect oneself, improve one's senses, and make one more in harmony with nature, but the Sith instead opt to turn to the Force's evil half and use that as a tool of war to dominate others. Heck, the way Amuro and Char were debating about it near the end of the original MSG mirrored the beliefs of Yoda and Vader when it comes to the Force. Yoda and Amuro want to use said gifts for knowledge and defense, to reach a point of peace and enlightenment. Char and Vader want those gifts to be used for war and noted that powerful beings like Luke Skywalker and Lalah Sune will become powerful weapons on the battlefield. It's practically the same philosophy under different guises and different names.
8:02 In F-91's defense, it does take place 50 years after the events of the original series. So it is perfectly normal that the bad guys didn't exist before because the organisation hadn't been formed yet.
F91 as a movie is a mess but it had so much potential with amazing mechanical designs and villains that could have taken things in a different direction from Zeon if they had gotten more development. That opening battle inside of colony was also incredible. Rarely do they get the sense of scale so right in Gundam works. Newtypes are fine... except when they aren't. I think you missed the point of them though. They're not simply "better at killing other people," they're psychics that end up getting weaponized usually against their will. The tragedy of the newtype is that they should be able to bring better understanding among human beings by being able to bridge the gap between misunderstandings but they're never given a chance to do it and either end up going insane or dying. Gundam Unicorn brings the concept full circle and offers a pretty satisfying ending to the whole thing (even though there are shows that take place later in the timeline it's the final Federation/Zeon conflict.) At their worst newtypes are just super aces and the Jedi of Gundam but at their best they don't undermine the theme at all. In my opinion they strengthen it by being a tool for peace perverted into a weapon.
Sunrise now Bandai Namco Filmworks seems to be doing a lost years project to animate new films and Ovas that fill the gap between CCA and F91. The guntank shown in F91 got a retroactive link to the post cca era with the Lotto the first MS designed by the newly founded SNRI. Twilight Axis gave us the Bush Concern modified Jengen where the standard features of Crossbone MS were tested. It lacked the beam shield but had a Beam shot lancer rifle and the visor was split testing the later goggle optics.
If you go by the novelization, Newtypes weren't meant to be superhumans as that is Federation and Zabi propaganda. Rather, Zeon Deikun meant that they were the human race united with one another, and living in space.
I'm personally not a fan of the mech designs, mainly the crossbone vanguard mobile suits. I don't know why but I just don't like the suits, I think it's cause of how bad they beat up jegans, yes I know it's three decades after the jegans were released but it felt like they genuinely did them dirty, and the heavy guns despite being the more latest mobile suits of the federation getting wrecked just as bad if not worst than the jegans.
Vladimir Mihnea I know that was the plan but there was time and/or budget constraints so it was shortened into a film and the only follow up it got was a fairly good manga series which I have never read yet cause it’s hard to get manga in my country that isn’t mainstream.
agreed. I was especially interested in Cosmo Babylonia as the antagonist group and the way they were played as nobler than the federation (initially). A whole series of would let me see a more developed take on their worldview as well as flesh out the flaws which ultimately lead to the films climax. Also F91 is just one of my favorite gundam units.
fun fact seabook is voiced by Steve Staley(or cannon) who voiced shiro amada in the 08th MS Team, Banagher Links in Unicorn, and Mcgillis Fareed in Iron Blooded orphans.
He was also in Outlaw Star. I think he has some sort of gentleman's agreement to do voices for Sunrise. I was totally expecting him to be fetus-kun in Cross Ange...
well, hate to burst your bubble but I've heard that seabook's Japanese VA (Koji Tsujitani) died of stroke last year, just a week before the NONONO Cat's been passed away
Yeah, but then again good mecha fight scenes and Gundam kind of go together. It's like asking Gordon Ramsay for a steak; you know you'll get a satisfying meal.
Meanwhile 00's running around with mechs with spindly limbs, a Lego Zaku...Victory has a mech that achieved flight by spinning its sword like a damn helicopter, 0079 has the Acguy, Grublo, Val Valo, the Zakrello...SEED has doggy and bird mechs like its supposed to be a Super Robot series...tell me again that Crossbone has silly looking mechs.
In defense of Gundam Sage, if you notice many of the new types are from space colonies. This a major part of the UC series, as a common belief that fuels alot of conflicts in the series is the ideology that humanitys next evolution stage will require more emphasis on space and less on Earth. While it gets lost more or less, it should be noted that Zeon and its original founder wanted Humans to abandon Earth and let it heal naturally, becoming a sort of sacred world, while humanity would, at large, move beyond Earth. The New Type idea is used as further proof of this. New Types arent just good pilots, combat is just one of the bigger things they can do. Its also what alot of factions, usually antagonistic or otherwise tend to focus more on. Its a part of the anti war message cause of how often we tend to focus more on the weapon aspect of new technologies/discoveries rather than the other, bigger picture ideas(As often happens in history). Now I won't argue that the anti war message is kinda lost because of all the mech combat and such, but it should be noted that it doesn't really go out of its way to glorify war. Since once you clear away all the "Cool robot fights" that happen, you have a bunch of people, wither evil or not, caught up in a conflict that is taking a massive toll on all of them.
"...it should be noted that it doesn't really go out of its way to glorify war. Since once you clear away all the "Cool robot fights" that happen, you have a bunch of people, wither evil or not, caught up in a conflict that is taking a massive toll on all of them." And nothing proves that better than 0080: War in the Pocket.
VlaDDrakkeN the slight ironic thing is that 2/3 of the most iconic newtypes were born on earth (lalah and Amaro sins char). And Lalah development her new type abilities before ever going to space. Tbh under closer inspection much of the Philosophy of Zum Deikun is largely baseless and not so well developed.
The jetpack Works as long as you get high enough from the ground. these Colonies have rotation gravity, so get away from the floor and the cetripital force doesn't hold you down. the only thing you don't REALLY need are retro thrusters. As there is no Artificial gravity in Gundam other than thrust and spin, thi scene makes sense
ArninoStorm I like f91 too, and it definitely has problems. The Crossbone gundam manga definitely helps a lot, it's story is much more coherent and helps explain the potholes of this movie while telling it's own great story. If you haven't read it I highly recommend it
I disagree: Crossbone is an entirely different story with some of the same characters (and worse art). The only part relevant to F91 is the two page telling us what happened after the movie. As for F91, it doesn't have plot holes, it just has missing scenes. Every plot beat makes perfect sense within the story, and in fact thanks to cut content there'S quite a few clumsy exposition drops.
It's not so much that they sucked it's just that trying to cram what is essentially a full Tv series/season into a movie that is under two hours is going to cause problems with pacing and story since in the case of F91and to an extent Armitage, it was clearly meant to be a TV series so as to explain all the plot points and not a film.
+God Fire Inferno that is a bit harsh, but I do agree Sage is overacting. Some of the most nauseating parts of the dialog seem to be originating by the dub (I don't remember these parts in the subs I was exposed too). The review would feel a bit more balanced if this was acknowledged. And personally I thought the Newtype line was pretty balanced brought into 0079, a bit stretched (to much?) in Zeta and used as a lazy deus ex machina in ZZ (and the new characters in Char's Counterattack) forward. All by all I consider this review to be a pretty cheap shot. Obviously this movie was a blatant cashgrap to make the best of (already produced?) footage and cash in on possible toy-sales. The dub isn't doing it any good and the initial intent of this production is inexcusably messed up in its final conception as a movie. That all pretty obvious and shouldn't need a 28 minute rant on it. I would have appreciated some more attention to the better aspects and potential of the ideas. Luckily the 0080 War in the Pocket review is a saving grace.
Regarding the original Gundam and Newtypes, it wasn't just the Federation who had them (Zeon actually had a LOT more at the time) and Char wasn't retconned into being one, it was in the original series. Amuro was the only Newtype in the Federation forces at the time, and he defeated Challia Bull in a fight, accidentally killed Lalah Sune while trying to kill Char, and beat Char at the very end of the series.
To be fair the concept of Newtypes while somewhat a Deus EX in the original were much better fleshed out in later series being made into another resource of war and thus another source of tragedy, since there powers were able to use a variety of exotic weapons such as any of the bit/funnel type weapons throughout the UC series. Plus Char wasn't so much retconned into a New Type he was just a weaker Newtype when compared to Amuro Ray.
Char was clearly shown to be a Newtype just at the end of the original series (did Sage even fucking watch 0079?) and clearly was a Newtype in Zeta Gundam, so it's not much of a retcon, correct.
Actually the first true Newtype machine was the MAN-08 Elmeth piloted by Lalah Sune which she took into battle to stop a fight between Char and Amuro and was then killed by Amuro accidentally and the incident was one of the big reasons why Char and Amuro hate each other. Also the Elmeth was later developed into the Qubeley first seen in Zeta Gundam and finally the Kshatriya from Unicorn Gundam
17:50 congratulations, you missed the point of newtypes the fact that they are better at fighting in space and controlling mobile suits is actually secondary newtypes are super empaths, they can feel others emotions, and even pain stronger newtypes actually feel it every time they kill someone its supposed to be a duality between them having the ultimate empathy, but also being all but turned into weapons for wars. in fact, amuro all but gets treated as a tool, a thing to be examined after the first war, the only thing keeping the federation from going all the way was his fame as a hero; not that it stopped them from keeping him in a guilded cage for years.
Gorma64 I remember that! When Minmay and Rick got stuck in a secluded section of the fortress and have to live off of old supplies and SOMEHOW a giant tuna.
Oh stranger ones come alright..........this is the franchise that has a character unironically called "AENUS" (and yes, that is exactly how it's pronounced)
Literally the only thing zeon has in common with nazis is the similar battle flag and the salute. They take a lot more inspiration from the Japanese military than anything else. Obviously char starts with a reference to the red baron from WW1
The Zaku and some of the later Neo-Zeon suits (notably the Geara Doga and Geara Zulu) are based around the asthethic of German WWII uniforms. Also, there's a scene in the original Gundam TV series where Degwin Zabi asks Dozle if he's ever heard of Hitler, and when Degwin explains who he is Dozle expresses admiration. But even that scene is a minor plot point. And Japan has a long history with thinking the asthethics of Nazi Germany are cool which is far more likely to be an influence than Tomino et al wanting to use Zeon as an analogy.
Actually, Zeon also drew inspiration from their Master Race/Eugenics Philosophies... With the New Type Philosophy. It drew parallels not only in the way it took a theory intended to be about the betterment of man perverted lionize themselves and their ideals, to justify war, and wholesale slaughter of those that didn't fit those ideals as "inferior" and a threat to the advancement of those superior ideals in the promotion OF those ideals but also the society those ideals create. However in doing so it provided another parallel... in the form of the leaders and demagoguery they promote those perverted ideals and fan the flames of war. Andrew WK - Garma Zabi's Funeral Speech By Gihren Zabi: th-cam.com/video/3em6oj7aKYU/w-d-xo.html On top of that The stylization of the Zeon Uniforms were very much based on the Knights of Wagnerian Operas and the legends of Parcival idolized by Hitler. Not to mention the Zakus & Goufs look like Giant Robot Nazi Storm Troopers.
They also have more in common with Stalinist Russia or Maoist China in that they use the image of revolutionary leader to further their cause. For Russia it was Marx and China it was Sun Yat-san.
Okay, the shell-casing thing is goofy, but it's also a concept I find fascinating, nothing really focuses on the ramifications of these stupid, oversized machine-guns and shell-using weapons. Do you think they recycle those? Do you think there's, like, giant bullet casing graveyards in the Gundam universe?
Large scale asteroid mining was what increased humanity's supply of metal like a billionfold. That is what they built all the colonies, thousands of MS, countless giant spaceships etc with. So what does it matter if shells are bigger
Did you just go through an entire episode not mentioning a Street Fighter joke? 'Cause Iron Mask is voiced by the same guy who did M. Bison in the Street Fighter II movie
Newtypes are better explained in the novel trilogy by Yoshiyuki Tomino. Essentially, Newtypes are, according to Zeon Deikun, the people living in space, who have no need for warfare or government, because they have sense of extended consciousness that allows them to empathize with one another. In other words, it's basically all nine billion people living in space, as one human race, who no longer have the need to have class-conflict, racial or ethnic disputes as they gain an understanding of others. Thus humanity forms a newtype of civilization among the stars. At least that is as far as the true interpretation of Newtypes goes. It's also implied that the Zabis deliberately made out Newtypes to mean the next step in human evolution, and that General Revil believes this version of newtypes, but both parties have different interpretations. The Zabis see it as a means to promote their war for independence and the Federation as a means for achieving control over space.
Regarding poorly-named characters, I'm pretty sure Char Aznable is just a garbling of Charles Aznavour, which almost works in-fiction, if we accept he was cocky enough to name himself after a long-dead celebrity and dare everyone to call him on the obvious pseudonym.
NewTypes were explained very well in the novelization in the first series. It's a great book that made me love the series. It's why I wish Rightstuf Anime dubbed _Victory, Double Zeta,_ and _Turn A Gundam._ I love the UC series so gosh darn much! BTW the best UC Side Story is that of the Midnight Fafnir Corp from the _Zeonic Front_ ps2 game. Fight me.
Localizing anime has really changed in the last 5 years. I remember in the 00's everything was released. Heck, the fact _Gundam Igloo_ and _Evolve_ were released without a dub freaked fans out but now, we're lucky if a show gets a DVD release. I remember how long it took _One Punch Man_ to get a blu-ray release, nearly a year after it was dubbed and streamed on Crunchyroll.
Even if I don't always share the same view with you, you are the only guy on youtube who talks about anime I can take seriously. Take it as a compliment please, because it is :)
Sf Debris has reviewed a few anime. Even one of the good Gundam series, though you'll have to wait to see it because of the server migration sfdebris.com/videos/anime/gundam0080_01.php
Why? Cause you're one of THOSE narrowminded people who think anime either post-2000 sucks or anime that doesn't appeal to westerners sucks, but in truth doesn't like anime anymore?
I will say this, sage does an amazing job analyzing animated media. Just because he chooses to focus on providing entertainment to a niche crowd (see:oldtaku) does in no way detract from his views and opinions on certain philosophical and theoretical themes. As for my personal view on the medium? Yes there are many horrible anime out today, but this is only due to oversaturation. Good anime is out there just like it was back in the day. Surprisingly finding anime that appeals to your particular tastes is easier because of the saturation but at the same time it's harder to find a legitimately good one. In contrast finding good anime back in the day was more about watching whatever you could find and praying it was decent.
My problem with Gundam has always been that its themes are both antithetical to what the series is and that they are directly stated by the characters yelling across the battlefield either psychically or over the radio (which is the dumbest thing). A better example of what Gundam tries to do is VOTOMS, which literally begins with the war coming to an end but goes to visually show what the war has done to society for the rest of the series. It doesn't constantly feel like the series is at odds with what it is, like Gundam often does. The world is so shitty, and the main character, Chirico, is mired in PTSD and his journey is not to fix the world's problems but to carve out a little bit of happiness for himself even as it seems like the entire galaxy is against him.
Don't get why you're lashing out against newtypes when you said in your 08th MS video you said that 'space opera and war story do not mix', but to be honest, that's what Gundam is entirely.
I assume it's there as a "It'll happen eventually" thing...or trying to bait a patreon person into requesting it. I forget when his cutoff date is now.
At this point, a blonde(ish) female lead who doesn't realise her father adopted her and she's actually royalty is almost more common to the gundam franchise than the actual gundams.
After years of watching, you finally do Gundam. Bravo. F91 is admittedly such a slapped together story and movie. Only really good thing to come out of were the mecha designs.
Pfft cmon, the shell casing makes a lot of sense in-universe, especially considering Gundam's traditional themes of "war is bad", collateral damage etc. A lot of the civilian deaths in actual war can be pretty goofy, demeaning even, but such is life.
@@OrtadragoonX It also depends on ideology as well. If you've seen the first film of the Hathaway's Flash trilogy, it questions Zeon Deikun's ideology, especially if a migration of humanity into space is even feasible. Especially as there are peoples indigenous to the lands that they have lived off of for centuries.
Only the Federation tends to have Newtypes? Look I know ZZ Gundam is a difficult watch at first but it did happen! Cyber Newtypes were everywhere especially in Neo-Zeon.
F-91 was one of the most memorable Gundam series in my life. I watched this movie over 5 times already in my life. The design, the music, and animation is just freaking epic. Next year is the 20th anniversary of this film. I'm glad Bandai Celebrate by doing a Metal Build of the Gundam F-91 White Chronicle for next year release.
I always had a theory that NewTypes were just brought about by humans being exposed to excess solar radiation since they live in outer space so it's not evolution but mutation. But it's just a headcanon I have about the series.
wdcain1 and if you get the chance to read the story of gundam x , that is what it boils down to in that anime is there mutants and give how few true newtype are in UC gundam, it makes the most sence.
Looking forward to a potential 8th MS Team episode. I know it's got its flaws, but it is my favorite Gundam series--though I still haven't found a copy of 0083. This...I remember walking into this halfway at a convention and being wholly confused. I, uh, understand why now.
I watched War in the Pocket when I was way too young to appreciate it. I'd probably have a wholly different opinion if I watched it now. I don't mind the ending of 8th MS team myself, the series is more optimistic despite showing sociopaths on both sides of the war, but I do understand why you wouldn't. I guess I just enjoyed 8th MS team so much that I forgive the ending.
Char Aznable is just the japanese prononciation of Charle Aznavour the French-Armeninan singer. (Tomino was a fan) so it's normal it's sound weird, it's the japanese pronocation of a frenchised armenian name.
He was resistant, as Bilbo was before him. Bilbo had that ring for at least 50 years and... going by film logic as it has been too long since I read Fellowship, only in the end right before leaving did he have any kind of effect from it. However the key is it wasn't magic in any way. I believe it's because of the Hobbit's love of the simple, perfectly content with a warm fire, some ale, pipe weed and good tilled earth, that the grander things the ring stands for just isn't for them, which means it takes longer for the ring to get its hooks in them. As pointless as his character was in the books, Tom Bombadil had absolutely no interest at all in the ring, and was completely unaffected by it because he was perfectly happy with what he had.
revenile But that sort of proves my point. He WAS resistant to the One Ring because of special circumstances(his being a hobbit), as opposed to anything character-related, or anything similar
Mats Martensson But he offered to take the ring, when they were going up the Morgul Vale to Shelob's lair, because of how much it was paining Frodo. And yes, it is proven how dangerous the Ring is to others; Isulder and Baromir were corrupted by coming into contact, and Frodo offered the Ring to Gandalf, and he turned it down because he knew it would corrupt him, just like it would corrupt all others who would keep it, hobbits are just more resistant to its power, usually...Smeagol doesn't count. So yeah, Hobbits are naturally more resistant to the One Ring. Frodo is able to resist the Ring because he was a hobbit, and Amuro is able to pilot the Gundam because he is a New type.
The point of new types isn’t that they can fight better. But beinng a new type allows them to sense better and communicate better. New Types are humans even more connected than before. That does allow them to fight better but that’s not the purpose or what a new type does.
Ok Sage, a few things. First Lala Sune was a newtype in the original Mobile Suite Gundam, and she was with the Principality. She is also the only known true newtype to have some Newtype ability even before entering space. One you need to compare what people call or believe to be newtypes in universe, which are people with abilities used almost exclusively in war, and what Zeon Zum Deikun meant when he talked about Newtypes when he was writing and talking about his philosophy of Contolism. Where Newtypes would be persons, who through understanding of others, would bring permanent peace and prosperity to the colonies. Which does fit with the anti-war narrative. Also Newtypes(as they know them, not Deikun's hypothetical persons) are not proper psychics but empaths, able to feel the presence and emotions of other individuals, new type or not. Hence they are able to locate their friends and enemies in a battlefield in which radar has been blocked and even visable light bent and obscured by the presence of Minovsky particles. It's only obvious that other Newtypes would have a stronger emotional signal. Even some of the crazier mind melding stuff makes some sense when seen as the interaction of two people with strong empathic ability. Now once you get all the amplified Newtype ability have a effect on the physical world via various types of Psycommu systems(Bio Sensor, Psyco-frame, et cetera) allowing mental interaction with Minovsky particles, yeah that is kinda silly Also the non UC variants of New-Types vary in how silly or not silly they are. Coordinators makes sense until you get the silly extra spacial sense stuff, which you don't need to be a Coordinator to develop. Inovators, well there are so many silly holes in Gundam 00, lets not talk about that.
Thanks. Generally point that Deikun idea was twisted is major point of Gundam. Telepathy was a thing what existed before whole thing, just MS were perfect for finding them as they profit even from minor skill advantages.
CaiusluliusCeasar1 Well said. It's so easy to forget that fact that meaning of Newtype has been twisted in Gundam lore and with it among fandom as well.
@Mecha82 But to be honest usually there is no connection here outside fact that it is talked over more then it is worthy. Newtypes have clearly established rules and limitations. Yes, they have some advantages but they neither were unique or that overpowered. It usually was limited to Funnels and additional sensor, but in end skilled pilot did win over incompetent Newtype and it wasn't even that rare. The myth come from two sources. Either people superficially read about franchise and presume that Newtype is "plot magic" what yes, to some degree it is. But neither of protagonist was incompetent, well.. at least most of them were trained pilots who also were a espers just as bonus. So no, there is no chosen ones here. Or people did see some lesser series what yes, treat Newtype thing as Super Sayan and presume that is always the case. When for most of the core series (UC) it is not the case.
The magic newtype thing came from zeta and zz gundam where they decided the biosensor could power up a suit by absorbing the spirits of all the dead newtypes. Cca had a psycoframe reaction move an asteroid back in to earth orbit with green mental energy.
Damn I lost you after TGWTG and all of a sudden I got triggered while watching an anime: "what the hell happened to anime abandon? ". Glad you're still with us, subbed immediately.
17:25 This is incorrect; Zeon made use of Lalah Sune with her Newtype powers, and there were a lot of examples within Neo Zeon. Also, while the TITANS might have initially been a Federation branch they quickly became their own thing and had many powerful New Types, both natural and cyber.
Bennett: I want some money, please give me money. Me: Sure. 'Picks up an empty mobile suit sized bullet shell and whacks you on the head with it'. Me: E-Begging is a bitch isn't it!
While I enjoy your reviews and agree with you on certain things, I respectfully disagree with your analysis of Gundam. For starters, not every pilot is a "special," just look at Shiro, Karen, and Sanders from the 8th MS Team. Neither of them are newtypes, just grunt Soldiers. Also, Domon starts out as a hot headed martial artist, who trains and grows. Finally, there's Garrod, Roybea, and Witz from Gundam X. Neither of them are specials either. While the plot for Gundam is pretty formulaic and there are plenty of "specials" & o.p. mobile suits, mobile armors and gundams, not all of them are.
You can fly with a jetpack inside a colony because the artificial gravity only stucks you to the floor while your feet are touching the floor and you have the same vector as the floor. Once you jump and break free of the cylinder's inertia you are pretty much weightless, even if Gundam is mostly inconsistent about that. Centrifugal force =/= gravity. Similarly, the ship bay at colonies lacks any "gravity" because it is in the center of the cylinder. You can also float at any part of the center of the cylinder without any jetpack equipment.
BlueMachine It's pretty damn fast. Gundam wiki says station radius is 14km. That calculates out to 117m/s for 1g. Still it would be impossible to maintain a stationary position as depicted.
The vanguard are a military battalion of (private contractors - similar to The Titans) that are left over from the remnants of the Zeon-federation wars. Run my a powerful family of tycoons... they most likely fought on the side of the federation (which would explain why they are still around) and they seek to gobble up what was left over of the aristocracy and the various rebuilt colonies.
Sage, love ya, but you have to remember, the space colonies ARE zero-g environments unless you are standing near the interior surface since they rotate along their long axis to generate artificial gravity.
Fun Fact. From what I have found out Gunpla manufacturers wanted them to start making the robots smaller so they would use less plastic. The IN LORE reason for this (which I actually like) is that beam weaponry has gotten so advanced, most mobile suits can't survive more than one shot. So Armor is now useless, so they compensate for that by making the robots smaller and faster so they are harder to hit. This however backfired as manufacturing smaller models caused them to make ENTIRELY new scale molds and made it impossible for them to reuse older molds and parts......ultimately costing them more money......congratulations you played yourself.
I haven't watched this one in years. But even though it's been a decade or more, one scene will always be fresh in my mind... man, that shell-casing to the head was something, wasn't it?
I am actually rewatching Gundam Seed right now just to recharge my nostalgia meter so that I can say how much better yesteryear was and it does not dissapoint and it is all because of the soundtracks. Holy moly, I get goosebumps every time I hear the music.
18:07 - well... Frodo did have a some innate resistance to /part/ of the ring's effects... Gandalf claimed that any mortal who used the ring too frequently would become wraith-like over time, and eventually subsumed into the spirit world. But since Hobbits seem to 'fade reluctantly', this power of the ring had less effect on them.
I understand that a shell casing that big would probably kill someone, but why the fuck would you actually show it!? Seriously, I don't think it would be possible not to make it funny as hell!
At least make the impact look better than that. Rebuild of Eva had shell casings crush cars, and they looked like they had weight. This... this was just lame.
Given how large the shell was, it would be like getting hit on the head by an empty bucket. As for the heat, it wouldn't be in contact long enough to cause seriously burns, maybe not even minor ones. Worst you'd probably get would be a giant head ache.
Eh I'll admit you've likely got me there. though I figured between the size of it, force of impact and the heat there did seem to be a way to make death by shell casing look better then the anime portrayed it.
Don't get me wrong, a casing does get hot. I've been at gun ranges and seen girls with low cut shirts get a casing in their cleavage and it ain't comfortable. Those little fuckers hold onto heat pretty well considering their size. That said, yeah that's about how it would look if you got hit on the head by a bucket sized casing. The only part they got wrong was the dying part. Though part of me wants to think she survived and when she woke up went all Taken and hunted down her babies kidnapper cause she has a certain set of skills that make her a nightmare for people like them.
Right at the end, when you said "popular and more enduring chapters" I was like, he must be about to do Gundam Wing...you held it up and the words Endless Waltz came out. That was some timing. I dragged through the Wing series, but watching it with friends. Well we had to do the movie also, man this movie feels like it had a 6hr runtime.
I liked War in the Pocket too, but I'd really prefer Char's Counterattack. It's the final point of the rivalry between Amuro and Char, and he could go into more detail about probably the two most important characters in Gundam History. The first protagonist, plus the main antagonist in the First series.
He said he is doing 1 that did it well, 1 that didn't do it well and 1 that didn't even try. F91 was the one that didn't even try and EW didn't do it well.
Hey, the Crossbone Vanguard manga was fucking amazing. Also, Newtypes aren't magically better at being pilots, the idea is that they are essentially the Mutants from X-Men, the next phase of human evolution that have come about because humans moved into Space.
Hi Dave, fellow Oldtaku here, just wanted to say thanks for all the great vids! Its nice to have a proper retrospective of old anime films, including the good, the bad, and all the stuff inbetween. Btw, The Critic was one of the greatest animated shows ever!
9:04 that scene with a mother holding her child actually happens A LOT in gundam.examples: ZETA(a body of a deceased mom holding her deceased infant child) double 0( a mother has been gunned down holding her infant child) unicorn( a mother and her child caught in the blast of a mobile suit battle.) am I the only one who noticed this?
Code Blaze Fate This hand of mine glows with an awesome power! Its burning grip tells me to defeat you! TAKE THIS! MY LOVE , MY ANGER, AND ALL OF MY SORROW!
Sage said he'd review one bad, one try hard, and one good Gundam series this month. Gundam Wing and F91 aren't good, so War in the Pocket is the good one. Now... granted, Sage is going to point out flaws, but I don't believe that he's going to bash it, and that he'll poke fun at its flaws instead.
Gundam is by far my favorite anime franchise, I've been waiting for you to get to Gundam. More than usual, I'm excited to see your take on the franchise with this series of videos. Personally, I've always liked the sci-fi potential of the New type concept, but then again I'm a big fan of the X-Men so maybe I'm more forgiving of New types since the concept and thematic execution of it is much more similar to that of Marvel mutants than one would think at a first glance. Still, I'd argue the problems with New types in Gundam have less to do with the concept itself not being a good one or having no place in Gundam and more to do with an execution of the concept that shows just how much potential it has while at the same time barely scraping that potential.
Char Aznable, criminally named!? Aside from the fact that it's not even his actual name but just one of his aliases, the name was actually based on the famed French-Armenian singer Charles Aznavour. That's why it's in Japanese pronounced as "Shā Azunaburu". Translate that back into English and you get what you read/hear as Char Aznable
I watched this during my UC marathon and I vaguely recall being just confused by the whole thing. Definitely forgettable; it took me until 7:42 to remember that I've seen this movie before. Those snow shots are somehow the one of the only things that seem to be unforgettable. But, I do totally remember how much I laughed at the fact the black guy died first. The best part of that mess of a movie.
Sorry, but the Principality of Zeon kind of were #spacenazis Also, there were series in the UC timeline that didn't feature newtypes. *08th MS Team,* *0080: War in the Pocket,* and *0083: Stardust Memory* had no newtype pilots at all.
...You sir, deserve applause, for admitting that Endless Waltz IS bad. I can't take Gundam Wing or Endless Waltz seriously anymore, but I used to like them, for the cool boomy mechs. It didn't stand the test of time for me, but don't let that affect your enjoyment of it!
Herman Cillo I still love it, but I do realize that it is only because of nostalgia. And sometimes art....depending on who was the main artist for the episode. Of old serial anime had different art styles to make the release time effection. So some episodes look down right aweful, but then they'll be some that are beautiful. I've seen it in Gundam, Sailormoon, rourin kenshin, ronin warriors. Surprisingly not all the gundam archs have that problem. I wonder if it depends on who the art director is. Oh and I love the music. At least gundam wing's sound track. I love Kow otani's work. He does shadow of the colossus as well.
Sometimes it can depend on which animation studio or team does the in between work on an episode too, so episodes can vary even with the same art director. I also agree that the soundtrack was pretty good, and I do still think that the Gundam designs from Gundam Wing were fantastic.
So we can say Gundam's ultimate lesson is...
War is horrible, but damn, is it good at selling figures!
Right?
Leonardo Rossi Amen!!
Model kits of Planes, Tanks, Warships, and Airsoft guns said hi
Pretty much. Gundam 0080 War in the Pocket even has the series end with the kids talking about how the war is over, but there will be another war with cooler mobile suits!
Precisely!
That why seed is complete crap
HolyknightVader999 I'm guessing Gundam takes a lot of inspiration from Star Wars
It practically was Star Wars with giant robots.

In F-91's defense, it does take place 50 years after the events of the original series.
Gundam Unicorn brings the concept full circle and offers a pretty satisfying ending to the whole thing (even though there are shows that take place later in the timeline it's the final Federation/Zeon conflict.)
At their worst newtypes are just super aces and the Jedi of Gundam but at their best they don't undermine the theme at all.
I think F91 deserves a reboot as a series. I mean I see potential and the movie was a waste of that potential.
The endless sequel manga are even worse, so no. The F91 canon is irredeemable.
Well we're up to UC 100 era now so that might happen after Hathaway's Flash.
Too bad Seabook seiyuu passed away before it can realize into new remake
fun fact seabook is voiced by Steve Staley(or cannon) who voiced shiro amada in the 08th MS Team, Banagher Links in Unicorn, and Mcgillis Fareed in Iron Blooded orphans.
A shame that Crossbone Gundam *still* hasn't been given an anime.
Also, the fight scene animations in this anime are exquisite.
hiroy_raind The Quavarze looks pretty good but yeah the rest are pretty dumb looking.
SMAXZO what about Iron Blooded Orphans?
Let's not forget the GLORIOUS Horse Gundam in Mobile Fighter G...
And the racism of Tequila Gundam...who has a sombrero on its head.
VlaDDrakkeN lets not to forget to bring up blue destiny
"...it should be noted that it doesn't really go out of its way to glorify war. Since once you clear away all the "Cool robot fights" that happen, you have a bunch of people, wither evil or not, caught up in a conflict that is taking a massive toll on all of them."
And nothing proves that better than 0080: War in the Pocket.
I really like F91, but it is obviously unfinished. It has really good parts that don't mesh up because the linking parts are just not there.
+God Fire Inferno
that is a bit harsh, but I do agree Sage is overacting.
Funny thing is I feel the exact same about CCA
The novelization by Tomino does a great job explaining NewTypes and how the fit in the all war series. Good book, I highly recommend it.
Char was clearly shown to be a Newtype just at the end of the original series (did Sage even fucking watch 0079?) and clearly was a Newtype in Zeta Gundam, so it's not much of a retcon, correct.
Char was a Newtype all along. They even gave him a Newtype mobile suit to pilot.
Yes, in 0079 they generally didn't have yet a Newtype machines. Char's MSN-02 Zeong was first MS using Psycommu.
17:50 congratulations, you missed the point of newtypes
the fact that they are better at fighting in space and controlling mobile suits is actually secondary
newtypes are super empaths, they can feel others emotions, and even pain
stronger newtypes actually feel it every time they kill someone
its supposed to be a duality between them having the ultimate empathy, but also being all but turned into weapons for wars.
in fact, amuro all but gets treated as a tool, a thing to be examined after the first war, the only thing keeping the federation from going all the way was his fame as a hero; not that it stopped them from keeping him in a guilded cage for years.
I think that was the point as well.
@Warlok and how come Newtypes became a big part in the Zeta Gundam
Is it me or has Sage lost weight?
Also a guy driving a bread truck into space is my most favourite thing for the coming week.
The only thing weirder than that is giant tuna fish flying in space in Robotech.....yeah, that happend.
I believe he made a post on twitter about losing weight.
he does look it. Tho i miss the beard
John O ́neil it's just you.
Gorma64 I remember that! When Minmay and Rick got stuck in a secluded section of the fortress and have to live off of old supplies and SOMEHOW a giant tuna.
IT A GUNDAM!!!

God, those Gundam names remind me of the Key And Peele skit about the College Football names.
Rogun987 yup. I bet more stranger ones will come.
Rogun987
Exactly.
But don't take our word for it.
Just listen to X-Wing @ Aliciousnous.
Is Hingle Mcringleberry a new type? Stay tuned!
Oh stranger ones come alright..........this is the franchise that has a character unironically called "AENUS" (and yes, that is exactly how it's pronounced)
Who in their right mind names their kid "Biscuit"? Maybe the colonists all got brain damage from lack of oxygen.
Hi sage thanks for continuously creating content

the flash when mentioning zeon is
#notspacenazis
Andrew WK - Garma Zabi's Funeral Speech By Gihren Zabi:

On top of that The stylization of the Zeon Uniforms were very much based on the Knights of Wagnerian Operas and the legends of Parcival idolized by Hitler. Not to mention the Zakus & Goufs look like Giant Robot Nazi Storm Troopers.
They're more like the German Reich, a lot more like the pre-Nazi Germany.
They would have to recycle them. There's probably an entire industry based on cleaning up giant spend shell casings.
+SageOfTheWest
Historically shell casings where (are?) recycled. Although modern combustible shell casings not so much.
Still those things have to be heavy, that's probably why she died lol
Large scale asteroid mining was what increased humanity's supply of metal like a billionfold. That is what they built all the colonies, thousands of MS, countless giant spaceships etc with. So what does it matter if shells are bigger
Did you just go through an entire episode not mentioning a Street Fighter joke? 'Cause Iron Mask is voiced by the same guy who did M. Bison in the Street Fighter II movie
kaihedgie And Q exists.
Cool. Did not know. Thanks.
#NotSpaceNazis, that was a quick gag

I'm not entirely sure you understand newtypes, Sage
i came here to say this.. but after watching 3 or 4 of his other Gundam videos I'm not sure he understands Gundam at all
Newtypes are better explained in the novel trilogy by Yoshiyuki Tomino.
Said to be based on a real phenomenon involving astronauts who see the earth from space.
@@Chipiricuiki0083 I am willing to ask what you mean, if you're gonna call the man out.
Newtype is basically a Empaty
Regarding poorly-named characters, I'm pretty sure Char Aznable is just a garbling of Charles Aznavour, which almost works in-fiction, if we accept he was cocky enough to name himself after a long-dead celebrity and dare everyone to call him on the obvious pseudonym.
How the hell didn't Paptimus Scirocco and Kacricon Cacooler make it in the terrible names list?
Big Heehee Another(not necessarily terrible) funny name if you know Spanish is Quess Paraya which sounds like "What is over there?"
Quattro Vagina
JamaiCAN, thank you very much.
... Which is not even the LEAST bit better.
Beltorchika. [mic drop]
Paptimus actually sounds classy. Quattro Bajeena, however, is just a joke.
Fight me.
Maybe they can not justify the cost of dubbing them over the increased profit margin.
HERE, HERE!
Sf Debris has reviewed a few anime. Even one of the good Gundam series, though you'll have to wait to see it because of the server migration sfdebris.com/videos/anime/gundam0080_01.php
What about Sawyer7Mage?
Wow, the dude got fit. Inspiring.
Found this movie was rushing itself one minute they're there then somewhere else the next scene like teleportation
Don't get why you're lashing out against newtypes when you said in your 08th MS video you said that 'space opera and war story do not mix', but to be honest, that's what Gundam is entirely.
This series may suck, but it gave us the Crossbones Gundam
After Gundam month can you please do a review of Zone Of to Enders 2167 Idolo and Dolores I.
I've been waiting for him to do ZOE forever -_-
Its RIGHT THERE on his shelf, its an odd choice of position for something that isnt a priority for him.
I assume it's there as a "It'll happen eventually" thing...or trying to bait a patreon person into requesting it. I forget when his cutoff date is now.
The “We’re in the Money” sketch killed me
RedMageUltra He's not wrong. Lol
Hell Sunrise even made a Gundam series that was explicitly about the Gunpla.
Hey, it's true. Bandai has pretty much an infinite stream of gumpla cash.
Weel. Time to go watch G-Gundam again.
At this point, a blonde(ish) female lead who doesn't realise her father adopted her and she's actually royalty is almost more common to the gundam franchise than the actual gundams.
Oh God, please Sage, no
Not Endless Waltz, not my childhood favorite
I love it too much Sage, don't do it!
Gundam is not just saying that war is bad, it's also saying government causes war, and therefore gov't is bad.
@@CosmoShidan it’s a bit more complicated than that depending on which show and which faction.
My god, you fix my days with your videos. Smells like concentrated nostalgia. Keep them coming!
*30th
I always had a theory that NewTypes were just brought about by humans being exposed to excess solar radiation since they live in outer space so it's not evolution but mutation. But it's just a headcanon I have about the series.
wdcain1 and if you get the chance to read the story of gundam x , that is what it boils down to in that anime is there mutants and give how few true newtype are in UC gundam, it makes the most sence.
I really need to check out X. It's the one Tomino series I've never watched and I've heard real good things about it.
Looking forward to a potential 8th MS Team episode. I know it's got its flaws, but it is my favorite Gundam series--though I still haven't found a copy of 0083.
This...I remember walking into this halfway at a convention and being wholly confused. I, uh, understand why now.
I love 8th MS team!! it was really a bit different from the other Gundam series.
Alyssa Stehle I personally prefer War in the Pocket but 8th MS Team was good too. Only thing I didn't like about it was the ending.
08th MS team and 0083 are my favorite of the OVAs. WiP makes me sad :(
Hamburger, well done.
Ned Innis 😢
For Toonami you haven't reviewed Ronin Warriors yet...Just saying...
QUAKE WITH FEAR!
Sage, please cover Ronin Warriors.
SNAKE!! FANG!!!! STRIIIKE!!!!!!!!
FLARE UP.... NNNNOOOOOWWWWWW!!!!!
Char Aznable is just the japanese prononciation of Charle Aznavour the French-Armeninan singer. (Tomino was a fan) so it's normal it's sound weird, it's the japanese pronocation of a frenchised armenian name.
Doesn't matter the explanation, it's still pretty friggin' weird.
18:12 The ironic thing is that, it was sort of speculated that Frodo WAS resistant to the One Ring's influence. Just thought I'd throw that out there
He was resistant, as Bilbo was before him.
Now once you get all the amplified Newtype ability have a effect on the physical world via various types of Psycommu systems(Bio Sensor, Psyco-frame, et cetera) allowing mental interaction with Minovsky particles, yeah that is kinda silly
Also the non UC variants of New-Types vary in how silly or not silly they are.
@Mecha82
But to be honest usually there is no connection here outside fact that it is talked over more then it is worthy.
The thing is that to an average viewer, they see that Newtypes are the specials; so Sage's point kinda still stands when it comes to telepathy in war.
Nnnnnneeeeeerrrrrrrrddddddd
You're calling me out in a Sage video of all things?
Ah the Titans. Now Gundam shows tend to copy them.
This guy doesn't understand gundam, and probably he didn't even watch the first anime entirely.
Very wise of you Mr.Sage, to post this during my heavy run in the Gundam series timelines.
No, the rotation speed required to simulate 1G is not that fast. And since you can maneuver you will not crash.
BlueMachine It's pretty damn fast. Gundam wiki says station radius is 14km. That calculates out to 117m/s for 1g. Still it would be impossible to maintain a stationary position as depicted.
But you already have that same speed when you jump from the ground. And the surrounding air has the same speed as well. It wouldn't be that sudden.
Red Dwarf the anime .
How are you gonna point out terrible names in gundam AND not mention Ful Frontal
So recent he hasn't seen it.
Also there is some guy in ZZ named Elbow!
hound89 Because that is a GREAT name, and it's Full Frontal, sir!
hears like a nude pose or something
Heck, almost all the Innovades qualify for that.
Bring Stabity.
They might as well go with a guy named "butt naked."
I am actually rewatching Gundam Seed right now just to recharge my nostalgia meter so that I can say how much better yesteryear was and it does not dissapoint and it is all because of the soundtracks. Holy moly, I get goosebumps every time I hear the music.
F91 really should of been a full series rather than just a movie
Jetfire48 50-50 but i do like anime movie production values
18:07 - well... Frodo did have a some innate resistance to /part/ of the ring's effects...
Gandalf claimed that any mortal who used the ring too frequently would become wraith-like over time, and eventually subsumed into the spirit world. But since Hobbits seem to 'fade reluctantly', this power of the ring had less effect on them.
I understand that a shell casing that big would probably kill someone, but why the fuck would you actually show it!? Seriously, I don't think it would be possible not to make it funny as hell!
What if it gave her hideous disfiguring burns and deformed her head like it should have?
As long as you keep making videos, I’ll be watching them
Yay! A gundam finally!!
Favorites are still War in the Pocket, Stardust Memory, and 08th MS Team.
"The Rona Family"
*Stares in 2020 Hindsight*
LET ME GUESS, you are doing War in the Pocket and EW because they are at christmas
I really liked war in the pocket I hope he does do that XD
I liked War in the Pocket too, but I'd really prefer Char's Counterattack. It's the final point of the rivalry between Amuro and Char, and he could go into more detail about probably the two most important characters in Gundam History. The first protagonist, plus the main antagonist in the First series.
He said he is doing 1 that did it well, 1 that didn't do it well and 1 that didn't even try. F91 was the one that didn't even try and EW didn't do it well.
I fell asleep during Char's Counterattack. Thought it wasn't that great.....He deserved better as a character.
Bennet you seem to have lost a good amount of weight.
@Jerrod Digiorgi You're not real, you're a robot.
Hey, the Crossbone Vanguard manga was fucking amazing.
Also, Newtypes aren't magically better at being pilots, the idea is that they are essentially the Mutants from X-Men, the next phase of human evolution that have come about because humans moved into Space.
Hey, you shaved your mustache and beard poyo!
Hi Dave, fellow Oldtaku here, just wanted to say thanks for all the great vids! Its nice to have a proper retrospective of old anime films, including the good, the bad, and all the stuff inbetween. Btw, The Critic was one of the greatest animated shows ever!
9:04 that scene with a mother holding her child actually happens A LOT in gundam.examples:
ZETA(a body of a deceased mom holding her deceased infant child)
double 0( a mother has been gunned down holding her infant child)
unicorn( a mother and her child caught in the blast of a mobile suit battle.) am I the only one who noticed this?
Call me crazy, but I beginning to see a trend.
If Gundam do not recycle plots and scenes who will?
War is hell

Thank you for providing time code. Still watched.
War in the pocket is my personal favorite
maybe he's doing that last?
08th MS Team is my favorite, with War in the Pocket being a close second.
I love how people will rag on Newtypes, but when 2001 does the same thing it’s considered a masterpiece. It’s just bullshit.
I lost it when he called Cecily an opertunistic bag of shit😂😂😂😂 it's very crude but also very to about Cecily 😂😂😂😂
F#k ..the sages put down of Cecily is legendary..totally deserved..brilliantly put.diss,.😊👍🇬🇧
You thought someone else had stolen your wife, but it was I, Theo!
Endless Waltz?? I've been waiting so long for this!
Sorry, but the Principality of Zeon kind of were #spacenazis
Also, there were series in the UC timeline that didn't feature newtypes. *08th MS Team,* *0080: War in the Pocket,* and *0083: Stardust Memory* had no newtype pilots at all.
Yeah, but the main protagonists in those shows weren't skilled pilots, at least by Oldtype standards.
08th MS Team is the best of Gundam, in my opinion. Very human characters all around, and cool action too.
So is the earth federation.
3:32 YES! You have no idea how long I've waited for you to use that clip! And you did it with the help of- KYOJIIIIIIIII!
Sooooooo seeing how this is Gundam month...I can only hoooooooope that for christmas.......you're gonna do endless waltz
...You sir, deserve applause, for admitting that Endless Waltz IS bad.
I can't take Gundam Wing or Endless Waltz seriously anymore, but I used to like them, for the cool boomy mechs. It didn't stand the test of time for me, but don't let that affect your enjoyment of it!
Herman Cillo
I still love it, but I do realize that it is only because of nostalgia.
Sage, I can't believe you you passed up Quattro Bajeena in your naming gag segment.
Really hope he does 8th MS team
I like drinking some MS Tea.
Yes Please! 08th MS Team is my favorite of the Gundam series, and I think it's actually the absolute best of Gundam!
