    So we can say Gundam's ultimate lesson is...
    War is horrible, but damn, is it good at selling figures!

      Pretty much. Gundam 0080 War in the Pocket even has the series end with the kids talking about how the war is over, but there will be another war with cooler mobile suits!

    Always assumed the Newtype concept was intended, on some level, to be part of the tragedy. Here we have these people on the threshold of a better and more enlightened humanity, with psychic powers that can innately link them to one another and make it so they can understand one another's hearts, pains, joys even at great distances...
    ...and they become just another bullet in humanity's wars. Something downright miraculous becomes something to commodify and weaponize, no different than how the Mobile Suits intended originally for construction become weapons of mass destruction. I would argue that was the core ethos of the Universal Century from arguably halfway through the original series but decidedly from Zeta onwards; when humanity fails to find common cause and instead seeks victory at all costs, no one and nothing is spared from feeding the machine. Hell, with the Artificial Newtypes one could argue it intentionally strips the wonder and grandeur of such powers right out. Make better soldiers, who can use better weapons, period. Grim, but disturbingly accurate and effective in getting across the core themes.

      I was thinking the same thing, there's a certain irony when someone who hates violence and peaches peace is found to be incredibly efficient at killing and ends up being an unstoppable killing machine.

      Actually, it's more along the lines of people who can understand one another better, being the cusp of a new race, being used as war machines. Not just another bullet, but Newtypes are practically being used as the ace in the hole for many factions. It's like with the Sith. The Force can be used to protect oneself, improve one's senses, and make one more in harmony with nature, but the Sith instead opt to turn to the Force's evil half and use that as a tool of war to dominate others. Heck, the way Amuro and Char were debating about it near the end of the original MSG mirrored the beliefs of Yoda and Vader when it comes to the Force. Yoda and Amuro want to use said gifts for knowledge and defense, to reach a point of peace and enlightenment. Char and Vader want those gifts to be used for war and noted that powerful beings like Luke Skywalker and Lalah Sune will become powerful weapons on the battlefield. It's practically the same philosophy under different guises and different names.

    In F-91's defense, it does take place 50 years after the events of the original series. So it is perfectly normal that the bad guys didn't exist before because the organisation hadn't been formed yet.

    F91 as a movie is a mess but it had so much potential with amazing mechanical designs and villains that could have taken things in a different direction from Zeon if they had gotten more development. That opening battle inside of colony was also incredible. Rarely do they get the sense of scale so right in Gundam works.
    Newtypes are fine... except when they aren't. I think you missed the point of them though. They're not simply "better at killing other people," they're psychics that end up getting weaponized usually against their will. The tragedy of the newtype is that they should be able to bring better understanding among human beings by being able to bridge the gap between misunderstandings but they're never given a chance to do it and either end up going insane or dying. Gundam Unicorn brings the concept full circle and offers a pretty satisfying ending to the whole thing (even though there are shows that take place later in the timeline it's the final Federation/Zeon conflict.)
    At their worst newtypes are just super aces and the Jedi of Gundam but at their best they don't undermine the theme at all. In my opinion they strengthen it by being a tool for peace perverted into a weapon.

      Sunrise now Bandai Namco Filmworks seems to be doing a lost years project to animate new films and Ovas that fill the gap between CCA and F91. The guntank shown in F91 got a retroactive link to the post cca era with the Lotto the first MS designed by the newly founded SNRI. Twilight Axis gave us the Bush Concern modified Jengen where the standard features of Crossbone MS were tested. It lacked the beam shield but had a Beam shot lancer rifle and the visor was split testing the later goggle optics.

      If you go by the novelization, Newtypes weren't meant to be superhumans as that is Federation and Zabi propaganda. Rather, Zeon Deikun meant that they were the human race united with one another, and living in space.

      I'm personally not a fan of the mech designs, mainly the crossbone vanguard mobile suits. I don't know why but I just don't like the suits, I think it's cause of how bad they beat up jegans, yes I know it's three decades after the jegans were released but it felt like they genuinely did them dirty, and the heavy guns despite being the more latest mobile suits of the federation getting wrecked just as bad if not worst than the jegans.

      Vladimir Mihnea I know that was the plan but there was time and/or budget constraints so it was shortened into a film and the only follow up it got was a fairly good manga series which I have never read yet cause it’s hard to get manga in my country that isn’t mainstream.

      agreed. I was especially interested in Cosmo Babylonia as the antagonist group and the way they were played as nobler than the federation (initially). A whole series of would let me see a more developed take on their worldview as well as flesh out the flaws which ultimately lead to the films climax. Also F91 is just one of my favorite gundam units.

    In defense of Gundam Sage, if you notice many of the new types are from space colonies. This a major part of the UC series, as a common belief that fuels alot of conflicts in the series is the ideology that humanitys next evolution stage will require more emphasis on space and less on Earth.
    While it gets lost more or less, it should be noted that Zeon and its original founder wanted Humans to abandon Earth and let it heal naturally, becoming a sort of sacred world, while humanity would, at large, move beyond Earth. The New Type idea is used as further proof of this. New Types arent just good pilots, combat is just one of the bigger things they can do. Its also what alot of factions, usually antagonistic or otherwise tend to focus more on.
    Its a part of the anti war message cause of how often we tend to focus more on the weapon aspect of new technologies/discoveries rather than the other, bigger picture ideas(As often happens in history).
    Now I won't argue that the anti war message is kinda lost because of all the mech combat and such, but it should be noted that it doesn't really go out of its way to glorify war. Since once you clear away all the "Cool robot fights" that happen, you have a bunch of people, wither evil or not, caught up in a conflict that is taking a massive toll on all of them.

      VlaDDrakkeN the slight ironic thing is that 2/3 of the most iconic newtypes were born on earth (lalah and Amaro sins char). And Lalah development her new type abilities before ever going to space. Tbh under closer inspection much of the Philosophy of Zum Deikun is largely baseless and not so well developed.

    The jetpack Works as long as you get high enough from the ground. these Colonies have rotation gravity, so get away from the floor and the cetripital force doesn't hold you down. the only thing you don't REALLY need are retro thrusters. As there is no Artificial gravity in Gundam other than thrust and spin, thi scene makes sense

    I really like F91, but it is obviously unfinished. It has really good parts that don't mesh up because the linking parts are just not there.

    • @EpicSteve23
      @EpicSteve23 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ArninoStorm I like f91 too, and it definitely has problems. The Crossbone gundam manga definitely helps a lot, it's story is much more coherent and helps explain the potholes of this movie while telling it's own great story. If you haven't read it I highly recommend it

    • @ArninoStorm
      @ArninoStorm 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I disagree: Crossbone is an entirely different story with some of the same characters (and worse art). The only part relevant to F91 is the two page telling us what happened after the movie.
      As for F91, it doesn't have plot holes, it just has missing scenes. Every plot beat makes perfect sense within the story, and in fact thanks to cut content there'S quite a few clumsy exposition drops.

    • @Tython82
      @Tython82 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's not so much that they sucked it's just that trying to cram what is essentially a full Tv series/season into a movie that is under two hours is going to cause problems with pacing and story since in the case of F91and to an extent Armitage, it was clearly meant to be a TV series so as to explain all the plot points and not a film.

      +God Fire Inferno
      that is a bit harsh, but I do agree Sage is overacting. Some of the most nauseating parts of the dialog seem to be originating by the dub (I don't remember these parts in the subs I was exposed too). The review would feel a bit more balanced if this was acknowledged. And personally I thought the Newtype line was pretty balanced brought into 0079, a bit stretched (to much?) in Zeta and used as a lazy deus ex machina in ZZ (and the new characters in Char's Counterattack) forward.
      All by all I consider this review to be a pretty cheap shot. Obviously this movie was a blatant cashgrap to make the best of (already produced?) footage and cash in on possible toy-sales. The dub isn't doing it any good and the initial intent of this production is inexcusably messed up in its final conception as a movie. That all pretty obvious and shouldn't need a 28 minute rant on it. I would have appreciated some more attention to the better aspects and potential of the ideas.
      Luckily the 0080 War in the Pocket review is a saving grace.

    Regarding the original Gundam and Newtypes, it wasn't just the Federation who had them (Zeon actually had a LOT more at the time) and Char wasn't retconned into being one, it was in the original series. Amuro was the only Newtype in the Federation forces at the time, and he defeated Challia Bull in a fight, accidentally killed Lalah Sune while trying to kill Char, and beat Char at the very end of the series.

  • @Tython82
    @Tython82 7 ปีที่แล้ว +54

    To be fair the concept of Newtypes while somewhat a Deus EX in the original were much better fleshed out in later series being made into another resource of war and thus another source of tragedy, since there powers were able to use a variety of exotic weapons such as any of the bit/funnel type weapons throughout the UC series. Plus Char wasn't so much retconned into a New Type he was just a weaker Newtype when compared to Amuro Ray.

    • @wdcain1
      @wdcain1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The novelization by Tomino does a great job explaining NewTypes and how the fit in the all war series. Good book, I highly recommend it.

    • @otakuevolution2131
      @otakuevolution2131 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Char was clearly shown to be a Newtype just at the end of the original series (did Sage even fucking watch 0079?) and clearly was a Newtype in Zeta Gundam, so it's not much of a retcon, correct.

    • @HolyknightVader999
      @HolyknightVader999 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Char was a Newtype all along. They even gave him a Newtype mobile suit to pilot.

    • @TheRezro
      @TheRezro 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Yes, in 0079 they generally didn't have yet a Newtype machines. Char's MSN-02 Zeong was first MS using Psycommu.

    • @Tython82
      @Tython82 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Actually the first true Newtype machine was the MAN-08 Elmeth piloted by Lalah Sune which she took into battle to stop a fight between Char and Amuro and was then killed by Amuro accidentally and the incident was one of the big reasons why Char and Amuro hate each other. Also the Elmeth was later developed into the Qubeley first seen in Zeta Gundam and finally the Kshatriya from Unicorn Gundam

  • @Maioly
    @Maioly 7 ปีที่แล้ว +50

    17:50 congratulations, you missed the point of newtypes
    the fact that they are better at fighting in space and controlling mobile suits is actually secondary
    newtypes are super empaths, they can feel others emotions, and even pain
    stronger newtypes actually feel it every time they kill someone
    its supposed to be a duality between them having the ultimate empathy, but also being all but turned into weapons for wars.
    in fact, amuro all but gets treated as a tool, a thing to be examined after the first war, the only thing keeping the federation from going all the way was his fame as a hero; not that it stopped them from keeping him in a guilded cage for years.

      The Zaku and some of the later Neo-Zeon suits (notably the Geara Doga and Geara Zulu) are based around the asthethic of German WWII uniforms. Also, there's a scene in the original Gundam TV series where Degwin Zabi asks Dozle if he's ever heard of Hitler, and when Degwin explains who he is Dozle expresses admiration. But even that scene is a minor plot point. And Japan has a long history with thinking the asthethics of Nazi Germany are cool which is far more likely to be an influence than Tomino et al wanting to use Zeon as an analogy.

    • @Kenshiro3rd
      @Kenshiro3rd 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Actually, Zeon also drew inspiration from their Master Race/Eugenics Philosophies... With the New Type Philosophy. It drew parallels not only in the way it took a theory intended to be about the betterment of man perverted lionize themselves and their ideals, to justify war, and wholesale slaughter of those that didn't fit those ideals as "inferior" and a threat to the advancement of those superior ideals in the promotion OF those ideals but also the society those ideals create. However in doing so it provided another parallel... in the form of the leaders and demagoguery they promote those perverted ideals and fan the flames of war.

      Newtypes are better explained in the novel trilogy by Yoshiyuki Tomino. Essentially, Newtypes are, according to Zeon Deikun, the people living in space, who have no need for warfare or government, because they have sense of extended consciousness that allows them to empathize with one another. In other words, it's basically all nine billion people living in space, as one human race, who no longer have the need to have class-conflict, racial or ethnic disputes as they gain an understanding of others. Thus humanity forms a newtype of civilization among the stars. At least that is as far as the true interpretation of Newtypes goes. It's also implied that the Zabis deliberately made out Newtypes to mean the next step in human evolution, and that General Revil believes this version of newtypes, but both parties have different interpretations. The Zabis see it as a means to promote their war for independence and the Federation as a means for achieving control over space.

      I will say this, sage does an amazing job analyzing animated media. Just because he chooses to focus on providing entertainment to a niche crowd (see:oldtaku) does in no way detract from his views and opinions on certain philosophical and theoretical themes. As for my personal view on the medium? Yes there are many horrible anime out today, but this is only due to oversaturation. Good anime is out there just like it was back in the day. Surprisingly finding anime that appeals to your particular tastes is easier because of the saturation but at the same time it's harder to find a legitimately good one. In contrast finding good anime back in the day was more about watching whatever you could find and praying it was decent.

    My problem with Gundam has always been that its themes are both antithetical to what the series is and that they are directly stated by the characters yelling across the battlefield either psychically or over the radio (which is the dumbest thing). A better example of what Gundam tries to do is VOTOMS, which literally begins with the war coming to an end but goes to visually show what the war has done to society for the rest of the series. It doesn't constantly feel like the series is at odds with what it is, like Gundam often does. The world is so shitty, and the main character, Chirico, is mired in PTSD and his journey is not to fix the world's problems but to carve out a little bit of happiness for himself even as it seems like the entire galaxy is against him.

    • @revenile
      @revenile 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      He was resistant, as Bilbo was before him. Bilbo had that ring for at least 50 years and... going by film logic as it has been too long since I read Fellowship, only in the end right before leaving did he have any kind of effect from it. However the key is it wasn't magic in any way. I believe it's because of the Hobbit's love of the simple, perfectly content with a warm fire, some ale, pipe weed and good tilled earth, that the grander things the ring stands for just isn't for them, which means it takes longer for the ring to get its hooks in them. As pointless as his character was in the books, Tom Bombadil had absolutely no interest at all in the ring, and was completely unaffected by it because he was perfectly happy with what he had.

    • @UltraGalaxyify
      @UltraGalaxyify 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      revenile But that sort of proves my point. He WAS resistant to the One Ring because of special circumstances(his being a hobbit), as opposed to anything character-related, or anything similar

    • @UltraGalaxyify
      @UltraGalaxyify 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mats Martensson But he offered to take the ring, when they were going up the Morgul Vale to Shelob's lair, because of how much it was paining Frodo. And yes, it is proven how dangerous the Ring is to others; Isulder and Baromir were corrupted by coming into contact, and Frodo offered the Ring to Gandalf, and he turned it down because he knew it would corrupt him, just like it would corrupt all others who would keep it, hobbits are just more resistant to its power, usually...Smeagol doesn't count. So yeah, Hobbits are naturally more resistant to the One Ring. Frodo is able to resist the Ring because he was a hobbit, and Amuro is able to pilot the Gundam because he is a New type.

  • @historyking9984
    @historyking9984 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The point of new types isn’t that they can fight better. But beinng a new type allows them to sense better and communicate better. New Types are humans even more connected than before. That does allow them to fight better but that’s not the purpose or what a new type does.

  • @GaiusIuliusCaesar1
    @GaiusIuliusCaesar1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +46

    Ok Sage, a few things. First Lala Sune was a newtype in the original Mobile Suite Gundam, and she was with the Principality. She is also the only known true newtype to have some Newtype ability even before entering space.
    One you need to compare what people call or believe to be newtypes in universe, which are people with abilities used almost exclusively in war, and what Zeon Zum Deikun meant when he talked about Newtypes when he was writing and talking about his philosophy of Contolism. Where Newtypes would be persons, who through understanding of others, would bring permanent peace and prosperity to the colonies. Which does fit with the anti-war narrative.
    Also Newtypes(as they know them, not Deikun's hypothetical persons) are not proper psychics but empaths, able to feel the presence and emotions of other individuals, new type or not. Hence they are able to locate their friends and enemies in a battlefield in which radar has been blocked and even visable light bent and obscured by the presence of Minovsky particles. It's only obvious that other Newtypes would have a stronger emotional signal. Even some of the crazier mind melding stuff makes some sense when seen as the interaction of two people with strong empathic ability. Now once you get all the amplified Newtype ability have a effect on the physical world via various types of Psycommu systems(Bio Sensor, Psyco-frame, et cetera) allowing mental interaction with Minovsky particles, yeah that is kinda silly
    Also the non UC variants of New-Types vary in how silly or not silly they are. Coordinators makes sense until you get the silly extra spacial sense stuff, which you don't need to be a Coordinator to develop. Inovators, well there are so many silly holes in Gundam 00, lets not talk about that.

    • @TheRezro
      @TheRezro 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Mecha82
      But to be honest usually there is no connection here outside fact that it is talked over more then it is worthy. Newtypes have clearly established rules and limitations. Yes, they have some advantages but they neither were unique or that overpowered. It usually was limited to Funnels and additional sensor, but in end skilled pilot did win over incompetent Newtype and it wasn't even that rare.
      The myth come from two sources. Either people superficially read about franchise and presume that Newtype is "plot magic" what yes, to some degree it is. But neither of protagonist was incompetent, well.. at least most of them were trained pilots who also were a espers just as bonus. So no, there is no chosen ones here. Or people did see some lesser series what yes, treat Newtype thing as Super Sayan and presume that is always the case. When for most of the core series (UC) it is not the case.

    • @DrMecha
      @DrMecha 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

For starters, not every pilot is a "special," just look at Shiro, Karen, and Sanders from the 8th MS Team. Neither of them are newtypes, just grunt Soldiers. Also, Domon starts out as a hot headed martial artist, who trains and grows. Finally, there's Garrod, Roybea, and Witz from Gundam X. Neither of them are specials either. While the plot for Gundam is pretty formulaic and there are plenty of "specials" & o.p. mobile suits, mobile armors and gundams, not all of them are.

    You can fly with a jetpack inside a colony because the artificial gravity only stucks you to the floor while your feet are touching the floor and you have the same vector as the floor. Once you jump and break free of the cylinder's inertia you are pretty much weightless, even if Gundam is mostly inconsistent about that.
    Centrifugal force =/= gravity.
    Similarly, the ship bay at colonies lacks any "gravity" because it is in the center of the cylinder. You can also float at any part of the center of the cylinder without any jetpack equipment.

    Fun Fact. From what I have found out Gunpla manufacturers wanted them to start making the robots smaller so they would use less plastic. The IN LORE reason for this (which I actually like) is that beam weaponry has gotten so advanced, most mobile suits can't survive more than one shot. So Armor is now useless, so they compensate for that by making the robots smaller and faster so they are harder to hit. This however backfired as manufacturing smaller models caused them to make ENTIRELY new scale molds and made it impossible for them to reuse older molds and parts......ultimately costing them more money......congratulations you played yourself.

    I am actually rewatching Gundam Seed right now just to recharge my nostalgia meter so that I can say how much better yesteryear was and it does not dissapoint and it is all because of the soundtracks. Holy moly, I get goosebumps every time I hear the music.

    18:07 - well... Frodo did have a some innate resistance to /part/ of the ring's effects...
    Gandalf claimed that any mortal who used the ring too frequently would become wraith-like over time, and eventually subsumed into the spirit world. But since Hobbits seem to 'fade reluctantly', this power of the ring had less effect on them.

    I understand that a shell casing that big would probably kill someone, but why the fuck would you actually show it!? Seriously, I don't think it would be possible not to make it funny as hell!

      What if it gave her hideous disfiguring burns and deformed her head like it should have?

    • @Psyche1903
      @Psyche1903 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      At least make the impact look better than that. Rebuild of Eva had shell casings crush cars, and they looked like they had weight. This... this was just lame.

    • @naterivers6107
      @naterivers6107 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Given how large the shell was, it would be like getting hit on the head by an empty bucket. As for the heat, it wouldn't be in contact long enough to cause seriously burns, maybe not even minor ones.
      Worst you'd probably get would be a giant head ache.

    • @janushyde86
      @janushyde86 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Eh I'll admit you've likely got me there. though I figured between the size of it, force of impact and the heat there did seem to be a way to make death by shell casing look better then the anime portrayed it.

    • @naterivers6107
      @naterivers6107 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Don't get me wrong, a casing does get hot. I've been at gun ranges and seen girls with low cut shirts get a casing in their cleavage and it ain't comfortable. Those little fuckers hold onto heat pretty well considering their size. That said, yeah that's about how it would look if you got hit on the head by a bucket sized casing. The only part they got wrong was the dying part.
      Though part of me wants to think she survived and when she woke up went all Taken and hunted down her babies kidnapper cause she has a certain set of skills that make her a nightmare for people like them.

      I liked War in the Pocket too, but I'd really prefer Char's Counterattack. It's the final point of the rivalry between Amuro and Char, and he could go into more detail about probably the two most important characters in Gundam History. The first protagonist, plus the main antagonist in the First series.

    unicorn( a mother and her child caught in the blast of a mobile suit battle.) am I the only one who noticed this?

Now... granted, Sage is going to point out flaws, but I don't believe that he's going to bash it, and that he'll poke fun at its flaws instead.

    Gundam is by far my favorite anime franchise, I've been waiting for you to get to Gundam. More than usual, I'm excited to see your take on the franchise with this series of videos.
    Personally, I've always liked the sci-fi potential of the New type concept, but then again I'm a big fan of the X-Men so maybe I'm more forgiving of New types since the concept and thematic execution of it is much more similar to that of Marvel mutants than one would think at a first glance. Still, I'd argue the problems with New types in Gundam have less to do with the concept itself not being a good one or having no place in Gundam and more to do with an execution of the concept that shows just how much potential it has while at the same time barely scraping that potential.

    Char Aznable, criminally named!? Aside from the fact that it's not even his actual name but just one of his aliases, the name was actually based on the famed French-Armenian singer Charles Aznavour. That's why it's in Japanese pronounced as "Shā Azunaburu". Translate that back into English and you get what you read/hear as Char Aznable

    I watched this during my UC marathon and I vaguely recall being just confused by the whole thing. Definitely forgettable; it took me until 7:42 to remember that I've seen this movie before. Those snow shots are somehow the one of the only things that seem to be unforgettable. But, I do totally remember how much I laughed at the fact the black guy died first. The best part of that mess of a movie.

      Herman Cillo
      I still love it, but I do realize that it is only because of nostalgia. And sometimes art....depending on who was the main artist for the episode. Of old serial anime had different art styles to make the release time effection. So some episodes look down right aweful, but then they'll be some that are beautiful. I've seen it in Gundam, Sailormoon, rourin kenshin, ronin warriors.
      Surprisingly not all the gundam archs have that problem. I wonder if it depends on who the art director is.
      Oh and I love the music. At least gundam wing's sound track.
      I love Kow otani's work.
      He does shadow of the colossus as well.

    • @hariman7727
      @hariman7727 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes it can depend on which animation studio or team does the in between work on an episode too, so episodes can vary even with the same art director.
      I also agree that the soundtrack was pretty good, and I do still think that the Gundam designs from Gundam Wing were fantastic.
